Dr. Michael Klein is best known for his landmark Randomized Control Trial of episiotomy that demonstrated that routine episiotomy caused the very problems it was supposed to prevent. This work is credited with leading to a dramatic drop in episiotomy and a parallel drop in severe rectal trauma across Canada and beyond. Semi retired, he continues to teach both clinical and research skills, and mentors family practice physicians for their research projects. He is also the author of “Dissident Doctor”, a riveting book chronicling his life and work. Nikki, Lexi, and Dr. Klein chat about the eye opening experiences and knowledge Dr. Klein has gained through his years of dedication, work and research in birth. He shares the importance of self-advocacy, gives us a history lesson in obstetric violence and pleads with us to make change for future generations of birthing women. What We're Chatting About: What makes you so passionate about maternity care for women? Can you tell us why episiotomies should be avoided? How did episiotomies become routine practice? How important do you feel midwives & doulas are in maternity and birth care? How can women be better equipped to advocate for themselves to not have an episiotomy? What other ill-practices do you feel are out there? Why do episiotomy rates continue to be so high in many places around the world despite the evidence against them? It's been said it takes on average 17 years for evidence-based care to make it into practice settings. Can you speak to this? Has that been your experience? How can we each do our part to change this culture and demand better practices? I'm in the middle of reading your memoir “Dissident Doctor” - My Life Catching Babies and Challenging the Medical Status Quo. You really are a beacon of light in the medical community! Mommy wine culture is booming. You don't have to go far to find memes about the “quarantini” and “mommy's juice box” being a box of Rosé. Today we are asking the question why? Drinking can be a coping mechanism for stressed out moms - but what moms really need isn't wine. What we need is support. And that is unfortunately difficult to ask for. We are interviewing Michelle Kapler. She is a Certified Life Coach, specializing in overdrinking and alcohol freedom. She works with high achieving women, who want to explore their relationship with alcohol, without judgement and without labels. As a highly successful entrepreneur, multiple times over and a mother, Michelle understands what it's like to have a big, full, wonderful life on the outside… but to truly feel like you need that nightly glass (or bottle) of wine to make it through life. To feel like sometimes you are drinking against your own will. To feel like you have lost control. Michelle has now been living an alcohol free life for over two years. To achieve this, she used tools based in cognitive psychology, thought work and coaching, to completely lose her desire for alcohol and create a beautiful amazing life, without identifying as an alcoholic or using a 12 step program. She now helps her clients do the same. Nikki, Lexi, and Michelle talk about how much is “too much,” alternative coping mechanisms, and how to overcome many addictions in your life. What We're Chatting About: Tell us your story of how you came to specialize in helping people cope with drinking? What are the stats on drinking frequency and amount? What is too much? What is the difference between an alcoholic and someone who drinks too much? What are some signs you may want to get some help? What do you wish more people knew about drinking? What are your thoughts on Mommy Wine Culture? How has becoming a non drinker affected your life? At the helm of this ship are two women - Nikita Stanley and Aleks Jassem - a pair of former party-girls who got unintentionally pregnant within weeks of each other and went from acquaintances to best friends in a (fetal) heartbeat. In 2014, the two unlikely moms combined their talents and mutual distaste for the typical mommy rhetoric and created The Rebel Mama(.com). Adored by cool moms the world over, the smart and edgy online publication creates a safe and judgement-free space that's known for its celebration of both individuality and authenticity. Between the two of them, Aleks and Nikita are mamas to three kids, a dog, and a cat. They reside in Toronto, Canada and survive (almost) exclusively on peanut butter sandwiches, Napolitano pizza, and coffee. Dr. Michelle Nadler is a Medical Oncologist with Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. She's also an Assistant Professor, Clinician in Quality & Innovation at the University of Toronto. In her clinical role, she treats women with breast cancer. From a research perspective, she focuses on cancer-survivorship issues and the role of exercise/rehabilitation in oncology as well as breast cancer screening from women age 40-49. For both of these topics, her focus is on knowledge translation (or dissemination & implementation) - ie how can we ensure that we put the best evidence into routine clinical practice. Carolyn Best BSc MD FRCSC Following the completion of my undergraduate medical degree at the University of Toronto, I completed my residency training at McMaster University in 2009. I went on to do a two year Fellowship in Urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai Hospital. I then returned to McMaster University and joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2012, with a clinical practice focused on pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. At the same time I developed a keen interest in surgical education. In January 2016, I moved my clinical practice to the community of Halton and began work as a Urogynecologist at the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. My practice is dedicated entirely to Urogynecology with an interest in, and a focus on, minimally invasive surgical techniques. Surgical teaching has also remained a priority in my daily practice. A note from Hannah: Like many of you, I am no stranger to hard times. I was once a gymnast for the University of Nebraska. That is until I dislocated both of my elbows at the same time. This is only after recovering from breaking both ankles at the same time. I lost my sport, my identity, and my self-worth. I spiraled into depression, anxiety, and extreme sudden weight gain. It is no surprise that eating disorders, obsessive thoughts, and low self-worth found its way into my life. I was then sexually abused, which shattered me. I was completely broken. Shortly after I had a car accident that should have killed me. I am no stranger to pain or hardships. I've encountered some pretty hard shit that's brought me to my knees. But I am thankful for those moments that I couldn't understand at the time because it's paved the way for the life I have now, the outlook I have now and the empathy I have for other peoples struggles. It allowed me to dive into my career helping woman find their worth. My page, and my life is dedicated to helping women break through toxic diet and fitness culture. To help mothers navigate confident and safe pregnancies and easier postpartum journeys. More than anything I'm also just a regular mom navigating life and doing the best I can. Message from Hannah: Hey Beautiful People, I sincerely apologize for not including all genders in my statements during this podcast. I was extremely anxious during it. However my words were insensitive as my language choice wasnt inclusive. Listening back on it, it was the first thing I wish I could have spoken differently. I hope you know my heart and message is genuine. When I sat down with Nikki Bergen, the famous pilates and pelvic floor guru from The Belle Method, I wanted the conversation to get away from core exercises and breathing techniques. Even though Nikki is the absolute expert on these topics, but it's not what I wanted to pick her brain about. If you watch Nikki online, the undercurrent of her content is one of self-trust, self-care, and not giving a you-know-what about what others think of your choices. How you be a mom, be a partner, or be a woman in the world shouldn't be about pleasing everyone around you. We talk about haters, being judged, our own stories, and many more tangents that made this hour something special. Nikki has her own brand new podcast called “We Go There” which is a women's health and wellness podcast you'll love. You can find the links to her podcast in her bio. Follow Nikki on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thebellemethod/ Even if you're not postpartum or planning for pregnancy, her content will connect with any woman on a self-discovery journey to be her strongest self. You'll learn some breathing techniques along the way too.

When I brought Nikki onto my show, I thought we were going to talk mostly about exercise, pelvic blood flow, and optimizing fertility through movement, but she's very open about her past struggles with fertility. So, we ended up talking about some really interesting and important topics regarding her personal journey with IVF. Nikki happens to be one of Canada's most sought-after health and fitness experts. With a background as a Pilates instructor and former professional dancer, she serves as an inspirational trainer and creative educator with a passion for encouraging women to lead happier, healthy lives. I also cherish her as part of my amazing group of local female entrepreneurs kicking ass in my neck of the woods! She's dedicated her life to creating fitness programs with creative choreography from science. Each is specifically designed to enable women to ditch the guilt and bring balance into their bodies. The methods combine physical therapy with Pilates-style functional movement, which helps women improve incontinence, prolapse, and diastasis recti. In today's episode, we discuss Nikki's experience with IVF due to male factor infertility. We dive into her unhappiness with her clinic and switching doctors, advocating for herself, and being a Type A personality embracing surrender. Also, she shares some great tips regarding exercise and body movement during fertility struggles. This is a great interview with an expert trainer who displays her passion for helping women feel confident and strong throughout their pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Show Notes: [02:41] - Michelle welcomes Nikki to the show and asks her to tell us a little about herself. This week’s guest is Nikki Bergen, Pilates teacher and creator of The Belle Method and the Bump Method. We talk about societal pressures for moms and women, and how she went from being a dancer to being a international sought after fitness expert focused on safe, effective core workouts during pregnancy and postpartum. She begins her Pilates work with teaching women how to deeply activate their core and breathe properly. Nikki explains what “hug the baby breath” is. She describes how the tension in our pelvic floor and the hiking of our shoulders have us breathing too high in our rib cage and not expanding the diaphragm. She shares the “chain effect” of breathing into the diaphragm and pelvic floor and describes how someone begins when they’ve never done Pilates or core breathing before. “If you’re not breathing, you’re not doing Pilates” is what Nikki stands by. “We can all benefit from learning to breathe correctly because our bodies will function better.” I ask her what to look for if you are at home and aren’t sure if you’re doing it right and she says “stand in front of a mirror, when you inhale, do you shrug your shoulders?” Tune in to find out why that matters whether you do or don’t. Nikki describes the differences you can expect in prenatal yoga versus prenatal Pilates and how to choose. “Labor is the most intense marathon you will likely ever go through.” She says she focuses on it with pregnant women as she helps women in the later stages of pregnancy prepping them for birth. We discuss the fear stigma around birthing and how this changes the physiology of our pelvic floor. She shares great insight as to what to do to stop perpetuating the fear of birth that is common in society. The “pain-fear-tension cycle” that can happen during labour is important to know about. Nikki Bergen is the amazing lady behind The Belle Method, which is described as pelvic health meets Pilates. And more recently, The Bump method which is transforming exercise in pregnancy and in post partum. Nikki is a Pilates Instructor and professional Dancer based in Toronto who is a new mumma that has her own story of fertility struggles. She opens up about that in this episode as well as practical and interesting advice for the mums-to-be and the recovering mumma. Her message, which I love, is the slower you go the fast you change, hitting back at this unreasonable concept of “bouncing back quickly after child birth.” Even with a teething toddler in the background and technology issues – we got there in the end and I am so glad we did. I loved this chat and I hope you do too!You can find out more about Nikki here: thebellemethod.comAnd follow her on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/TheBelleMethodAnd on Instagram here: www.instagram.com/thebellemethod
In this awesome episode, three strong women share their experiences as new moms, unique moments, love, complications, challenges and the encounter with the lack of proper information and understanding about the singularity of every woman in these magical, and at the same time, intense times in the life of a woman. Ayla Khosroshahi shares her story about the traumatic birth of her first baby that lasted 4 days, followed by a not much easier breastfeeding. Currently, she is pregnant of her second baby and preparing herself for a new experience, along with the support of professionals, family and friends. Dr. Alli Cain talks about how an induction three weeks before term was the best possible option to deliver her baby, but even after her baby was born another complication unfolded, breastfeeding was painful and not sufficient to satiate her baby’s hunger. After many weeks of battling, Alli realized she could not breastfeed her baby. Nikki Bergen tells the story of how she had a hard time conceiving, but finally had the natural birth she was dreaming about. Challenges started for Nikki when breastfeeding time came and it was nothing like what she expected. Also, Nikki, who already had a heart condition, had to undergo heart surgery 4 months postpartum, which brought a new complication in her breastfeeding journey.
