How often do you experience two competing desires at once? Maybe you want to eat the cake, but you also want to reach your physique goals. Do you make either one of those desires wrong for existing?   This internal tug-of-war between immediate pleasure and long-term progress is something I see consistently in my coaching practice. Having competing desires around food and body goals doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you – it makes you human.    In this episode, I break down how to hold space for competing desires without shame or self-judgment. I share practical mindset tools for making intentional food choices, including how to slow down, create awareness, and choose from a place of empowerment rather than restriction. We'll also explore why resentment develops and how to shift from feeling deprived to feeling in control of your decisions.   Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://carriehollandmd.com/153

Send Jay comments via textWhat if your most profound life lessons could come from an unexpected journey? In this inspiring episode, I explore how my recent walk along the Camino de Santiago in Spain became a powerful metaphor for navigating the empty nest years—filled with surprises, deep connections, and personal growth.Walking the Portuguese route with strangers from around the world pushed me beyond my comfort zone, revealing that the richest experiences often come from embracing detours rather than rushing to the finish line. When faced with a challenging climb, a simple question from a friend—"What's the rush?"—became a guiding wisdom for embracing the present moment. The true magic of the Camino was found in the connections formed along the way. Brief conversations with fellow pilgrims sparked feelings of transformation, and our nightly ritual of sharing a "crumb" (challenge) and "cookie" (joy) strengthened resilience and gratitude—key components proven to boost mental well-being during major transitions.Through rain and sunshine, I discovered that each traveler brought unique "superpowers," from authenticity to embracing new experiences, inspiring me to pursue my dreams while savoring life's small moments. This journey taught me that necessary endings—like children leaving home or finishing a long walk—create space for new beginnings. What's your Camino? In this episode, you'll learn… Why lack of intention isn't laziness—it's a defense mechanism rooted in fear. How fear of both failure and success cause self-sabotage during rounds. Why intention is the bridge between present-moment focus and flow state. The mental cost of vague effort and how it keeps you stuck. How beliefs like “I'm not good enough” or “I don't deserve success” drive inconsistent play. The power of micro-intentions for golfers who struggle with focus or ADHD. Playing without clear intention protects the ego from failure but also blocks growth and consistency. Fear of success often drives self-sabotage just as much as fear of failure, especially after a strong front nine or great round. Avoiding structure or skipping a pre-shot routine is a defense mechanism to avoid confronting uncomfortable truths. Intentionality requires presence, self-trust, and emotional discipline—it's a choice to lead yourself instead of react. Clear intention creates the mental and emotional conditions needed for flow state and peak performance. Common resistance to slowing down stems from false beliefs like “more effort equals better results” or “if I'm not doing, I'm falling behind.” Key Quotes: “Lack of intention isn't a behavior problem—it's a belief problem.” “Intentionality is the conscious act of directing your attention, energy, and effort—on purpose, with purpose.” “Vague effort is your ego's favorite hiding place.” “Trying to play ‘free' without structure or routine is just another form of avoidance.” “Without intention, you reinforce who you used to be.” “Your subconscious is always intentional—even when you're not.” “Intentionality is an act of self-trust. There's a quiet, yet powerful illusion many of us live with every single day—and it's keeping us stuck. It's the illusion of separation—the belief that we're disconnected from our true selves, from others, and from the success and fulfillment we crave. This belief is at the root of so much suffering, but most people don't even realize it's running the show.In this episode, I dive deep into how the illusion of separation creates cycles of fear, doubt, and self-sabotage. If you've ever felt like something's missing, like you're disconnected from your power, or if you've been running on empty for far too long, this is for you. You'll learn: — Why the illusion of separation keeps you from true alignment and connection — How constantly striving for external validation only deepens the disconnection — Where this illusion may have come from—and how it might've been planted in your childhood — How to break free from this limiting belief and reconnect with your true selfThis conversation is a wake-up call for anyone ready to end the cycles of suffering and step into a life of alignment, freedom, and true power.–Connect with Deanna:Instagram: @deannaherrinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deanna-herrin/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedeannaherrinWebsite: http://www.deannaherrin.net

Scott Tavlin is a motivational speaker, mindset coach, radio host, and emcee with a powerful message and a story rooted in real loss. His energy is contagious, his presence commanding — but behind the microphone is a son who lost his mother far too soon. Scott's mother battled significant health challenges for years, including a critical ICU hospitalization in 2018 that nearly took her life. Miraculously, she recovered — and the version of her that emerged became one of Scott's greatest inspirations. When she eventually passed, it wasn't without warning — but it still left a hole that changed everything. In this episode, Scott opens up about the complexity of watching a parent fight for their life, the guilt and confusion that came with not knowing how bad things were early on, and the intense desire to honor her by living fully. He shares how he turned to running, coaching, and speaking as emotional outlets — and how the lessons his mom lived by have become the fuel behind his dreams. From marathon training to morning radio, Scott walks us through the way grief shaped every step of his path. This conversation is about identity, legacy, and the power of intentional living. It's about the memory of a mother who poured everything into her family — and a son determined to carry her light forward. In this candid conversation, relationship coach Dr. Marie Murphy shares her insightful and judgment-free perspective on the growing phenomenon of gray divorce—the trend of couples separating after the age of 50. With her PhD in sociology of sexuality, Dr. Murphy challenges conventional views on infidelity and relationship transitions. She emphasizes the importance of being honest with ourselves about what we truly want: “Do you want to reconnect, or do you just think you should want to reconnect?” This distinction lies at the heart of our discussion and leads to deeper explorations of relationship dynamics during midlife.Highlights:Understanding gray divorce: 40% of divorces now occur after age 50, often linked to infidelity. The role of intentional curiosity in revitalizing relationships and fostering deeper connections. The dilemma of feeling responsible for others' emotions and how it conflicts with cultural ideas of individualism.Empowering thoughts that help you navigate your relationship choices without guilt or shame.Key Takeaways:Approaching infidelity with a non-judgmental mindset allows for clearer decision-making.The sociology of sexuality focuses on understanding actual behaviors in relationships rather than adhering to societal norms.Making relationship choices often involves balancing competing desires rather than straightforward right or wrong decisions.Marie Murphy's BioDr. Marie Murphy is a non-judgmental infidelity coach, and the host of the podcast Your Secret is Safe with Me. Treat each one with the same intention. Offense wins in golf. Shifting to “protect” a score leads to tentative swings and poor decisions. Commitment is clarity. A vague shot plan leads to vague swings. Clear images = clear results. Most bad shots stem from mental interference, not swing flaws — especially under pressure. Return to presence by letting go. Your body is always here. It's your mind that time travels. “Love the way it leaves.” Focus on your process, not the outcome. Unconditional confidence means trusting your skills even when results aren't there yet. Key Quotes: “You're not holding the lead. You're just holding onto an idea that doesn't exist yet.” “Golfers say, ‘If I can just par in…' — that's when the mind shifts into protection mode and everything tightens.” “A vague image produces a vague swing. Clarity of image is clarity of action.” “If you're not present on 15, your body's already in the bar on 19.” “You never calm up. You calm down. So stop trying to be up-tight and start getting down-settled.” “Focus on loving the way it leaves. That's all you can control.” “When you're out of your own way, your true skill level shows up.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Rory McIlroy's Performance at the Masters 09:07: The Defensive Mindset in Golf 14:01: Maintaining an Offensive Mindset 19:00: Being Present in the Moment 23:09: Caveman Lessons: The Roots of Fear and Awareness 26:04: The PAR Approach: Preparation, Action, and Response 30:20: Focusing on Process Over Outcome 32:33: Understanding Unconditional Confidence 35:15: Cultivating Unconditional Confidence 38:41: Practicing Mindfulness Off the Course 42:30: Common Misconceptions About Mindfulness 44:32: The Billboard Message: Take Golf Seriously, Not Yourself 45:37: Patience and Humor in the Journey to Improvement

Welcome back to Pushing the Limits for another insightful episode. Today, we dive into Kaatsu Training with Sandy Nelson, exploring how this blood flow restriction technique boosts bone density, muscle growth, and brain health for older adults and athletes. Key Points: Research suggests Kaatsu Training helps older adults with osteopenia by improving bone density. It seems likely that Kaatsu Training increases IGF-1 and BDNF, supporting muscle and brain health. The evidence leans toward Kaatsu Training offering neuroprotection, likely via BDNF. Kaatsu Training appears to enhance athlete performance, aiding recovery and strength. What is Kaatsu Training? Kaatsu Training, also known as Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training, is a method where special bands partially restrict blood flow to the limbs during exercise. This creates a hypoxic environment in the muscles, promoting growth and strength with lighter loads. It was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato and is used for both rehabilitation and performance enhancement. Benefits for Older Adults and Osteopenia For older adults, Kaatsu Training can help combat osteopenia, a condition with low bone density. Studies suggest it can maintain or increase bone density, reducing fracture risk and supporting mobility, especially for those with joint issues like osteoarthritis. Its low-impact nature makes it suitable, allowing strength gains without excessive joint stress. Impact on IGF-1, BDNF, and Neuroprotection Research indicates Kaatsu Training increases Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), vital for muscle and bone health, and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), important for brain health. This likely contributes to neuroprotection, potentially reducing neurodegenerative disease risk by supporting cognitive function. Benefits for Athletes For athletes, Kaatsu Training can enhance performance by improving muscle strength and hypertrophy with lighter weights. It can also aid recovery by promoting growth hormones, reducing muscle damage, and allowing more frequent, intense training, benefiting Olympians and professional athletes. Use code "Nelson" at Kaatsu.com for 10% off to start incorporating this training Sandy Nelson Bio  "Never before have I seen a modality that gives such a robust hormonal response and promotes the biochemical factors we need  to stay strong and sharp as we age."
