Storytelling Strategies that Foster Connection with Sarah Elkins SHOW SUMMARY: What if your stories don't define you… but the way you tell them will? This week on Look for the Good, airing Monday, May 11, 2026, I'm diving into one of my favorite topics—stories—with storytelling and public speaking coach Sarah Elkins—whose powerful TEDx talk is helping people rethink how we share and listen to personal stories in order to find more common ground and build connection to each other one story at a time. And trust me, this conversation goes way deeper than you think.  Because here's the truth: It's not just what happened to you… it's how you've been telling it—on repeat—that's shaping your life right now. Sarah has an incredible ability to understand people quickly and deeply—often picking up on patterns others miss. Using a blend of intuition and a powerful personal discovery tool, she helps uncover strengths and insights with striking accuracy. Don't Travel...Pivot: The Life Skill That Changes Everything In basketball, you learn one move early: the pivot.  In life… it might be the move that changes everything. Do you ever feel like you're juggling it all? Career. Creativity. Family. Identity. Trying to make it all work—without dropping the ball? This week on Look for the Good, Carrie sits down with Ayla Brown—and her story is a masterclass in the art of the pivot. Ayla had already earned a full Division 1 basketball scholarship to Boston College before ever stepping foot on American Idol. Singing was something she loved—but never something she expected to turn into a career. And then… everything shifted. After appearing on Season 5 of American Idol, she found herself at a crossroads—two powerful paths, one unexpected opportunity. So what did she do? She pivoted. From the court… to the stage… to launching her own record label… to becoming a news host of The Flyover Podcast… to raising two young boys—Ayla has built a life by learning how to use every skill she has. Including one powerful truth she shares in this episode: “You've got to learn the skills to pay the bills.” Here's what you'll take away from this powerful conversation: How to pivot without losing yourself Why your creativity might be your most valuable asset How to use all your skills—not just one—to build your life The difference between chasing fame… and choosing freedom And don't miss the deeply touching story at the end—when Ayla shares how her dad became her biggest fan, even learning to play guitar just to feel closer to her. Because life isn't about choosing one path. It's about learning when—and how—to pivot. In this episode, Andy Robinson, owner and lead consultant at LFG Mindset Consulting, joins Kristi Skutvik to share the story behind his mindset coaching practice. Andy grew up in a military town in New Jersey and knew from the age of 15 that he wanted to be a Marine. After joining the Marine Corps and deploying twice to Iraq, his second deployment in 2006 ended when his truck was hit by a roadside bomb. Three Marines in the vehicle died that day. Andy survived but broke his neck, ribs, and legs and spent seven months in the hospital. At 23, everything he associated with his identity was gone. Rather than building his future around his limitations, Andy chose to focus on what he wanted his life to look like. He surrounded himself with other veterans who had chosen differently, learned to drive, went to college, started a family, and eventually landed a job in capital markets with no finance background, cold calling Fortune 500 CFOs and treasurers at companies like Amazon, Ford, and Coca-Cola. When he realized his fulfillment was no longer in finance, he discovered mindset coaching and recognized he had been living its principles for years without knowing the language. Now he helps people step into the next version of themselves by reprogramming their self-image, rewriting the stories they tell themselves, and building a vision for the life they actually want. Learn more about Skutvik Consulting Follow PeopleForward Network on LinkedIn Learn more about PeopleForward Network Key Takeaways: Everything in your life is a reflection of the self-image you once held, change the image and the results follow Your subconscious only operates in the present tense, so the language you use about your goals and circumstances directly shapes what you experience The people you surround yourself with influence the choices you make, seek out those who are living the kind of life you want Start reprogramming your mindset with a blank notebook: write about the life you want as if it is already happening, based purely on desire rather than current circumstances Busy is a choice, not a badge of honor, there are people just as successful who are not busy, because they have trained themselves to think differently about time and priorities

In this episode, I sit down with Tim O'Connor—golf coach, author of Getting Unstuck, and one of the most refreshing voices in golf psychology—to unpack why so many golfers stay trapped in the same frustrating cycles year after year. Tim explains why being "stuck" has less to do with mechanics and more to do with unconscious patterns, repetitive thinking, fear-based control, and a disconnect from the physical experience of playing golf. We also explore surrender, awareness, gratitude, adaptability, and why the golfers who improve fastest are often the ones who stop trying so hard. In this episode, you'll learn: What being "stuck" actually feels like for golfers Why fixing your swing mid-round keeps you trapped How awareness is the first step to lasting change Why golfers overthink because they're disconnected from feel How to stop bringing swing thoughts to the course Why surrender creates more control than forcing outcomes How gratitude can instantly improve your relationship with golf If you've ever chased swing tips mid-round, sabotaged a great start, overthought every shot, or felt like your scores no longer reflect your ability, this conversation will hit home. You wake up tomorrow… and everything you've been chasing is already yours. Your handicap reads 0.0. Your business hits that long-awaited revenue milestone. No grind. No pressure. No failures. No growth. At first, it feels incredible. But then something shifts. Because deep down, you know you didn't earn it. You didn't become the person capable of sustaining it. And that's where the emptiness creeps in. In this episode, I break down why the process is the point—and why your obsession with shortcuts is quietly keeping you stuck. Whether it's golf, business, or life, the real goal isn't the outcome… It's who you become in the pursuit. In this episode, you'll learn: Why shortcuts feel so good—but sabotage long-term performance The psychological and emotional reasons you're wired to seek quick fixes How instant gratification creates the illusion of progress Why random action leads to random results The hidden cost of avoiding discomfort, failure, and uncertainty How lack of self-trust fuels constant searching for "the answer" How to redefine winning to focus on process over outcomes Practical ways to train your nervous system to tolerate discomfort If you're guilty of overly relying on shortcuts, this episode is the wake-up call you need to hear. You don't actually want the outcome—you want to become the person who earns it. Random action creates random results; intentional structure creates progress. Growth requires discomfort, and avoiding it guarantees stagnation. When you fall in love with the process, results arrive faster—and stick. Key Quotes: "Shortcuts aren't a strategy—they're a form of avoidance dressed up as progress." "We think we want the outcome, but what we're actually craving is becoming the person who achieves it." "Random action produces random results. Unintentional action produces unintentional results." "When you skip the process, you rob yourself of what makes results meaningful and sustainable." In this episode, I sit down with renowned neuroscientist and performance psychologist, Dr. Gary Sailes to unpack what truly separates elite, world-class performers from everyone else. This conversation goes far beyond surface-level "mental game tips." We dive into identity, trust, discipline, and the misunderstood role of control—especially for high-achieving, type-A individuals like you. Dr. Sailes shares decades of experience working with elite athletes across multiple sports and reveals why the best in the world don't just want success… they need it. We explore how structure creates freedom, how letting go creates control, and why your thoughts quite literally shape your performance. In this episode, you'll learn: The critical difference between being "obsessed" and having a true need to succeed Why elite performers trust their training instead of trying to control every outcome How letting go of conscious control actually leads to peak performance The hidden power of structure and why it eliminates emotional decision-making How your identity and beliefs can quietly cap your performance The difference between performance psychology and applied neuroscience A practical journaling exercise to rewire negative self-talk If you've ever felt like you're doing all the right things but still not performing at your highest level—on the golf course, in business, or in life—this episode will challenge the way you think about improvement and unlock a new level of awareness. #152: Why Consistency is Holding You Back From Transformational Results (and what to do about it)

You're not stuck because you lack discipline. You're stuck because you've mistaken consistency for progress. In this episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I challenge one of the most commonly accepted beliefs in personal development, golf, and business—that consistency is the key to success. Yes, consistency matters.  But it's not what creates transformation. Transformation comes from intensity. I break down why so many high achievers stay stuck despite doing "all the right things," how being consistently mediocre quietly kills progress, and what it actually takes to create rapid, meaningful breakthroughs in your golf game, business, and life. You'll learn how to strategically apply short bursts of intensity, raise your performance floor, and then use consistency to maintain your gains—without burning out or neglecting other areas of your life. In this episode, you'll learn: Why consistency alone is not enough for transformational change The difference between raising your ceiling vs. raising your floor How intensity creates rapid breakthroughs in performance Why most people are "consistently mediocre" without realizing it How to apply 30–90 day sprints to improve your golf game or business The role of discomfort, stress, and expansion in skill development How to balance intensity in one area without neglecting others Why ruthless elimination is required for real progress The importance of rest and recovery in sustaining high performance If you feel like you're putting in the work but not getting the results… this episode will challenge you in exactly the way you need. Have you ever felt anxious, frustrated, or on edge… without a clear reason why? Like something is off—but you can't quite explain it? In this episode, I'm introducing you to a concept that fundamentally changed how I understand human behavior, performance, and self-sabotage—your emotional home. This is the baseline emotional state your nervous system has been conditioned to return to… regardless of how much success you create on the outside. And here's the hard truth: if your emotional home is rooted in anxiety, pressure, scarcity, or frustration, you will unconsciously recreate those emotions—on the golf course, in your business, and in your life—no matter how disciplined or driven you are. I break down how this pattern forms, how it quietly drives behaviors like overthinking, tightening up under pressure, hesitation, and playing small…  …and, most importantly, how to begin identifying and dismantling it so you can build a new internal baseline aligned with confidence, calm, and peak performance. In this episode, you'll learn: What your "emotional home" is and why it dictates your behavior more than your goals Why you keep experiencing the same emotions on repeat—regardless of circumstances How your subconscious prioritizes familiarity and safety over growth and success How your childhood environment shaped your current emotional baseline Why success can feel uncomfortable—or even unsafe—at a deeper level Why most high performers remain stuck (even when they "know what to do") A simple, powerful exercise to identify the core emotions that make up your emotional home so you can begin to dismantle the home keeping you stuck Apply for 1-1 High-Performance Hypnotherapy and Mindset Coaching: Click here to apply to work with me. From waking up “sleeping giants” across five continents to building a new kind of school for the AI era, Kevin Voisin is the coach leaders call when their “mindset problem” is really a radical honesty problem. As Coach of Coaches and co‑creator of Apogee Strong micro‑schools, he shows entrepreneurs how to stop lying to themselves, break out of self‑sabotage, and operate as the force of nature they already are. You'll hear why most “personal development” advice is fake, how to recognize when you're at rock bottom and rock top, and why saying “I don't know why this keeps happening” is almost always a lie. Kevin unpacks why perfection is a horizon you can never reach (but still need), how to live powerfully imperfect, and how to use AI as the “tractor of the mind” instead of a threat to your livelihood. Kevin also shares how he thinks about parenting and education in a world where knowledge alone is no longer power only what you produce with it. If you're an entrepreneur, parent, or emerging leader who secretly feels like an impostor despite your wins, this episode will help you reclaim choice, embrace discomfort, and build a life and business that match who you really are. Quotes: “You're not a lost floatie in the ocean you're a force of nature.” – Kevin Voisin “Excellence is achievable. Perfection is a lie.” – Kevin Voisin “Most people don't have a self‑sabotage problem; they have a honesty problem with themselves.” – Kevin Voisin Resources: APOGEE Kevin Voisin on LinkedIn
