Minute One Hundred Thirty Six: From Joss Whedon's Name on Iron Man's Chest to The Opening Riffs of Soundgarden's Live to RiseEric Deutsch from Time to Rewind, Escape From New York Minute, and Flash Gordon Minute joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-sixth minute of The Avengers...We end the special credits with the director's name, which gives us a chance to dig into Joss Whedon's career a bit and our thoughts on him, and we only call him Tig Notaro a few times! After that, we transition to Sanctuary and find The Other monologuing to the back of a throne. Why are they here? Is this Thanos' thinking spot? We spend a bit of time breaking down The Other's line, and then we get into the appearance of Thanos, aka Man No. 1. That means we get to break down Damion Poitier a bit as well as he portrayed him here. It's a great conversation really breaking this mid-credits scene down, what it meant at the time, Death's role possibly in the franchise after this, and where it took us. Minute One Hundred Twelve: From This All Seeming Horrible to An Important Lesson in ‘Duck and Cover'Eric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twelfth minute of The Avengers...We finally get to find out Bruce's secret! But first, we get to enjoy Mark Ruffalo at his rumpliest with his perfect reaction to everything going on. We talk about Natasha's comments, Bruce's apology, how that plays based on what happened, and the fact that Thor didn't get an apology when he really took more hits than Natasha. It leads us to a moment of confusion as we try to sort out why Tony always seemed to expect Bruce to arrive. Was it aspirational? Was he tracking him? Is it just the scientist rom-com meet-cute connection they have? Hard to tell. Regardless, he decides to bring the party, aka. the sweet sea cow of a leviathan that Hulk decides to destroy. It's terrible. It's beautiful. And miraculously, our heroes get nary a scratch. Minute One Hundred Eleven: From Tony Forgetting Step Two to Bruce's Arrival on an Old MotorbikeEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-eleventh minute of The Avengers...Tony got the leviathan's attention and it pursues him, but when we cut to Clint and Natasha, we don't see him overhead. Weird, but not really bothersome. This minute focuses on the fight that our non-supers – Clint and Natasha – have with the Chitauri army in front of Grand Central Terminal. They're tough and they each have some great moves! Sure, they're less than super but they still hold their own!It does make us wonder why Cap shows up then. Did he think they needed help? Or does the fact that immediately after he arrives we get Thor and Bruce showing up too, that perhaps everyone thought he was calling for a team meeting? Perhaps. It does lead to a great moment of comedy in the eye of this Chitauri hurricane when Bruce arrives on that old motorcycle. So great. Minute Fifty Five: From Keeping the Love Alive to 120 Million KelvinEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode! In the fifty-fifth minute of The Avengers...Tony and Coulson arrive on the helicarrier bridge talking about the cellist, which leads us into a lengthy chat about “Agents of SHIELD” and the challenges of connecting TV properties at the time to the movies. We also talk about the writer's penchant for seemingly throwaway conversations like this at the starts or ends of scenes that sometimes end up carrying import down the road.Tony dives into problem-solving here, and we get a sense that he's one of the smart scientists in the room. He's also cheeky and arrogant, which leads to a debate about RDJ's acting skills when he's playing pirate at the captain's post (or is it the directing? The writing?). Regardless of that particular line, we all love the Galaga bit and talk a bit about the game as well as the actor playing Galaga Guy, even though we don't get to meet him yet.Why isn't Fury here? Why does Coulson leave? Why is Maria Hill so irritated? Is it Tony? Or is this a hang-on from the deleted scenes featuring her angry with Fury for involving the Avengers at all? It's interesting to see how the scene plays without those deleted scenes. Plus, we get Tony and Bruce and Natasha and Steve and Thor – 5/6 of our team – in one place! And how great is it seeing our nerdy scientists starting to get really nerdy scientific with each other? Minute Fifty: From Another Headbutt to A Concussive StrikeEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode! In the fiftieth minute of The Avengers...More fighting between our heroes. How much did we want to see this when we were kids on the playground? How often did we argue about who would beat who? This is that chance. Did we need it? Maybe not. But it plays well for the most part, right? We talk about some moments that work really well in this battle. We also talk about why Thor is so serious here, much different than later when he gets to fight Hulk. Andy even creates a wacky metaphor for the entire situation. And then we get to talk about the grown-up showing up as Captain America arrives, clocking them both with the pointy edge of his shield. But why did he decide to climb up to the top end of a broken tree? And how far did he have to run to get here? We debate a bit about the moment when Steve challenges Thor to put his hammer down, wondering if Thor only attacks Cap because Tony throws out a smarmy comment. And then we get the other great argument on playgrounds – which weapon's stronger. We get to see Thor's hammer pounding Cap's shield and lo and behold, it's a draw! Sure, it destroys an acre of forest, but it's worth it to see this, right? We dig into this and more.
