Weird that we had to watch this mega-hit movie because when you think about it, Loki's plan for world domination made about as much sense as our own A.I.'s. He might as well have forced The Avengers to watch and review random movies. Hey, that might have served him better than the fleshy Chitauri whose main weakness seemed to be punches and pointy things! But you gotta admit, from Shield to shawarma, they don't make em like this anymore. Support us on Patreon for early access and more!
We're back to finish the second part of our Ultimate story and boy is it a doozy. The Ultimates confront threats such as the Chitauri, an alien race posing a significant danger to Earth. However, their unity is constantly tested due to personal conflicts and power struggles among team members. Issues such as Captain America's distrust of Nick Fury's leadership, Thor's arrogance, and Hank Pym's insecurities and abusive behavior towards his wife, Janet van Dyne (The Wasp), come to the forefront. The series explores themes of power, responsibility, and the consequences of wielding immense abilities. It also delves into the darker aspects of superheroism, showcasing the flaws and vulnerabilities of its characters. Minute One Hundred Forty One: From The 34 Lighting TDs•Shader Writers at Weta Digital to The First Six of the Visual Effects ThanksThe TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network's own Steve Sarmento joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-first minute of The Avengers...We're knee deep in credits for the visual effects teams who worked on this movie. We look at how many people are credited with each team here, and then we jump into our names that we each picked. Steve picked the brothers Greg and Colin Strause, who run [hy*drau”lx], which spurs on a chat about the world of VFX right now, particularly with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on. From there, Andy talks about Joel Gerlach who worked as a VFX artist at Luma Pictures on this film, but has since gone on to create his own VFX company. Pete closes things out with a chat about Michael Corcoran, but we're still not sure where he's actually credited in this film. Regardless, he worked on creature effects, so we assume that means the Chitauri? Or maybe he was responsible for the exploding leviathan eyeball! And where would we be if we didn't bring up Soundgarden one last time? Minute One Hundred Twenty Seven: From Tony's Final Push to Tony Falling in SpaceIn the one-hundred-twenty-seventh minute of The Avengers...Tony somehow manages to not hit Stark Tower, which now looks like AI Tower. It's a bit ridiculous, but it's a movie so it's fine. Hulk watches in a dramatic shot, as does Nat. Where's Clint? Still stuck in that apartment? Cap and Thor watch from the streets below. Tony flies the nuke through the one-sided space hole and everyone cheers, but the battle's not over yet. Shouldn't Fury be, you know, directing or something?Meanwhile, we join Tony on the other side of the one-sided hole, but couldn't he have just tossed the nuke through and not gone through himself? If his intention was to hit the Chitauri mothership – which he does – wouldn't it have been better to see him aiming it once through? As it stands, it just looks like he keeps flying straight, until his suit powers down.Wouldn't his suit have been bette designed by this point after learning about near space flight in the first Iron Man movie? And even if it powered down, shouldn't he just keep moving along with the missile because of the vacuum of space? At least the shoulder units pop off to help propel him backward but was that enough?Regardless, Tony has a spiritual moment here as he seems to be dying. It's a powerful moment and we're fans of the moment, even if some of the logistics don't make sense. Minute One Hundred Twenty Five: From Pushing the Button to Tony's Info About the Nuke Coming InIn the one-hundred-twenth-fifth minute of The Avengers...The nuke is off and away! We've got a two minute and thirty second clock that starts ticking right here. Will it play out in real time as it does in movie time? We'll find out two-and-a-half minutes from now! We come into the fight in slow motion on Thor and Cap as they each retrieve their tools, then ramp up as they battle the Chitauri. It's an odd moment but does work okay. And they play it well sharing their pain and their ribs. Literally.Erik and Natasha work on destroying the Tesseract energy with the sceptre but how did she get it from Tony's patio? Is there a ladder we don't see? We still have issues with Erik's secret back door to destroy the Tesseract, but it is what it is. It puts the next steps of the plan into action though as Tony changes Cap's plans to shut the portal because he realizes there's more to do. Minute One Hundred Twenty Three: From Close-Range Arrow Fighting to A Bird in MotionRobin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Sword Boys joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-third minute of The Avengers...What happens when Hawkeye runs out of arrows? We get to explore that in this minute in great detail. First off, how does he even get them out of his quiver? It doesn't look like arrowheads could make it out of its top. We try to figure out the system he has for selecting arrowheads. Is it a combination system with the buttons on his bow? Or more like an up-down-select set of buttons? And how many extra arrowheads does he keep in his quiver? Another question that comes up relates to pulling arrows out of victims to reuse the shaft. Is there a button on the trigger than leaves the head behind, which is why there's no arrowhead on the one he struck down this Chitauri with? And does he have some sort of sanitation system to clean the viscera off the shaft before reusing it? So many questions...That takes us to his exciting escape from the Chitauri chariots heading his way to blow up the top of the building. It's his handy grappling hook arrowhead, and that creates all its own questions. How does that little head hold so much weight? What's with the cable? And how does it attach to his bow? Regardless, it does save Clint's life, even if he's in a lot of pain afterward. Of course, Kate Bishop's watching from the across the street, lest we forget.Meanwhile, Hulk's taking out Chitauri on a building top and then is surrounded by nearly two dozen more that blast him. Why doesn't he jump out? We discuss in detail, before heading to the helicarrier where we see a jet called into action from Jenny Agutter's member of the WSC and Maria Hill taking note. Very busy minute. Minute One Hundred Twenty Two: From Erik's Secret Safety to Quickdraw Archery on the RooftopLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-second minute of The Avengers...There's a space where the film might have made more sense if Erik was blinded by his passion for science and willingly did all this work to make this machine, only to realize at this point that he was wrong. That's not the story we get, and so the fact that Erik somehow knew to build a safety into his machine feels very heavy-handed to us. But the story needs to be moving along quickly as we're entering the climactic finale and just need to make things quickly understood. That takes us to Thor using his incredible leg muscles to stabilize himself on this chariot as he takes out several Chitauri before completely getting knocked off by a leviathan crashing through what turns out to be the Baxter Building, at least based on the real world address. Why was this poor friendly sea cow of the skies flying through a building? Well, turns out Iron Man was shooting it with lasers and chasing it. No wonder it's running and likely scared!Tony decides to do his little Jonah move which speaks to the fact that he really didn't know or understand the actual story. That aside, we get to see his Thigh Side-Winders in action! The explosion does throw him to product placement corner before we return to Barton on the roof. Minute One Hundred Nineteen: From Cap Lost in a Looking Glass to Cap Lost in His ThoughtsFather David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minutes community, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-nineteenth minute of The Avengers...We're back with Cap in that little side mirror. What were they trying to say here? Or was it just something to do because it looks cool and perhaps feels a bit more like an image you'd find on the pages of a comic book? We land on the latter. Regarding Hawkeye's message to Cap, however, we have no idea how he knows there's an issue in the bank. He's 400 feet in the air, after all, on the top of a building. That takes us to our deleted scene where we get more backstory with Beth the waitress as she flees the Pershing Street Cafe, makes it through the streets, sees Officer Saunders get killed by a Chitauri blast, then gets taken herself. She ends up in the 42nd Street Bank as a hostage with dozens of other civilians, where we find her in the theatrical cut. There's some odd and uncomfortable Holocaust imagery and themes here that come across more in the deleted scenes, but even without that, it raises too many questions for us. Why are the Chitauri rounding people up and killing them in this way? Why not just gun them down in the street? And why does their bomb only seem to work on two planes? All that said, we have a great fight between Captain America and the Chitauri, not to mention a fantastically cool escape that Cap does, as the Chitauri are disintegrated by their own bomb. That leads us back outside where Cap's dazed and looks at all the damage, and Beth the waitress just might actually recognize him. His mask did get ripped off, after all. Anyway, it's a confusing scene but does have some fun action. Plus, we get another Christ and the Cape from Father David! Minute One Hundred Eighteen: From A Game of Follow-the-Arrow to Our Second Odd Mirror Shot of the FilmIn the one-hundred-eighteenth minute of The Avengers...It's the second half of our fantastic single shot traveling from hero to hero, and we're here for it. In this minute, we follow Hawkeye's arrow to the Chitauri it hits to the leviathan it crashes into to Hulk and Thor on the back of the beast. It's quite a ride! Unfortunately, this does lead to more devastating treatment of our dear sea cows of the skies – the leviathan. Hulk and Thor team up to take this poor beast down, and sadly, it crashes into Grand Central Terminal where it not only dies but its eyeball explodes. Who thought that was a good idea to depict? This film already had its fill of eyeball trauma with the ocular extraction instrument, but now this? It's just awful. It does lead to a great punch as Hulk pounds Thor. Before this, they seemed a bit antagonistic but this might just be the start of their love/hate relationship as they both learn they're comfortable beating on each other. Erik, on the other hand, is by himself and comes to on the roof of Stark Tower. We try to deduce why he doesn't go through the same pop art Warhol color trip that Clint went through and think we landed on something that works. We end the minute with a bit of Cap taking out a Chitauri and another funky mirror shot that may not be as cool as the filmmakers thought it was. Minute One Hundred Seventeen: From Nat Being Sure to Clint Pointing an Arrow... Right at UsJames Anderson and Colin Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-seventeenth minute of The Avengers...Steve gives Nat a boost and it's quite the maneuver. It leads us to bring up the wonderful Heidi Moneymaker yet again as she does amazing work as Scarlett Johansson's stunt double. Is this her? Is it Scarlett? No idea, but we celebrate Heidi all the same. She goes on to take down the Chitauri on the chariot, and she ends up piloting it via blades sunk into the back of the Chitauri pilot. Ouch! It's intense. This leads us to yet another fantastic shot in the film. It's a oner that starts with Natasha on the chariot, brings Tony in to help her and then Cap, takes us up to Clint battling from the rooftops, and goes on from there. That's all we get in this minute, though. Regardless, it's fantastic. Minute One Hundred Sixteen: From Tony Complaining About the Lack of Invitation From Thor to Nat Asking for a BoostMike Gravagno from The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-sixteenth minute of The Avengers...Tony's upset that Thor didn't invite him to play, but why isn't Tony more concerned about, you know, helping non-supers, like Natasha and Clint, or perhaps actual New York citizens? Well, we all really know that he's in it for the great stories he'll be able to tell later, right? We also get to deal with the leviathan, which for some reason now decides it's going to fly through a building. But is it? We ponder the existence of these creatures, wondering if they're really gentle giants like whale sharks forced to do the bidding of the Chitauri, perhaps even controlled by someone on board their mother ship. Perhaps all it's wanting is for someone to help it. Unfortunately, Hulk doesn't care. (He also doesn't care about anyone working in this building or who will have to repair it.) He leaps onto the leviathan and then... somehow pulls it off course. We try to figure out how this happens. Can Hulk change mass? We end the conversation talking about Natasha taking on the Chitauri on her own and being exhausted from it, yet still pushing forward. We love that about her. We're not as much fans of her Black Widow's Bite, wishing she were given more opportunities to do interesting things with it. Still, she does get to end the minute with the decision to get boosted up by Steve – pretty badass. Minute One Hundred Fourteen: From Thor Taking Flight to A Lightning-Induced Explosion at the PortalIn the one-hundred-fourteenth minute of The Avengers...Thor's off and away! Natasha's looking tough! That's right, Steve's been busy giving orders and everyone's following as he's now proven himself to be team leader. Even Hulk listens to him! We do ponder the journey the character of Hulk takes through this franchise and acknowledge that this was a necessary bit of character development for him as they couldn't just have a giant, green, uncontrollable monster rampaging every time he hulked out. But we do miss scary Hulk.Hulk's smashing does give us a chance to talk about the buildings in the area and exactly how many Chitauri he takes out (hint: it's not many). We also get to marvel at his ability to take out Chitauri chariots midair. As for Thor? It seems he took a lap or something because yet again, he doesn't seem to be coming from where he just left on his journey to the top of the Chrysler building. But it does put him in a place to do some cool lightning work. Too bad some of the shots look fake. And it's actually the closeups that bother us, not the wider shots. Minute One Hundred Thirteen: From Bringing Down the Leviathan to Cap's Plan for ThorJames Anderson and Colin Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirteenth minute of The Avengers...It's a big one! We've got the death of the leviathan but really, we're here for the hero moment with the camera revolving around all six of our heroes, now finally THE AVENGERS. It's a great moment. Before we get there, we do talk a bit more about the demise of the leviathan and debate if its death should include more goo and grossness all over the streets. We also draw some comarisons to the graboids in Tremors that go nowhere because James has never seen it. There's talk about the nature of viscera on the lens, not to mention potentially steamy leviathan breath fogging the lens as it crashes off the viaduct. There's a documentary feel to it all for sure that the director loves, but it might be riding the line. The death of their mother (we've already proven that the leviathan is the Chitauri mama) fills all the Chitauri with rage to the point where one seemingly rips its own face off. Oh wait, that's a mask. So does that help them breathe in space then? Too many questions...The hero shot is the response to the screaming Chitauri. Hulk screams. Clint nocks. Thor wields. Natasha... loads. Steve readies. Iron Man... stands. They all get into their pose and it works well. Plus, it plays into the nature of the comic book origins with something that really feels like it could've been a splash page. From this, we get more leviathans which triggers Tony to essentially put Steve in charge finally, and the team goes to work. It's a minute full of fantastic moments. Minute One Hundred Eleven: From Tony Forgetting Step Two to Bruce's Arrival on an Old MotorbikeEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-eleventh minute of The Avengers...Tony got the leviathan's attention and it pursues him, but when we cut to Clint and Natasha, we don't see him overhead. Weird, but not really bothersome. This minute focuses on the fight that our non-supers – Clint and Natasha – have with the Chitauri army in front of Grand Central Terminal. They're tough and they each have some great moves! Sure, they're less than super but they still hold their own!It does make us wonder why Cap shows up then. Did he think they needed help? Or does the fact that immediately after he arrives we get Thor and Bruce showing up too, that perhaps everyone thought he was calling for a team meeting? Perhaps. It does lead to a great moment of comedy in the eye of this Chitauri hurricane when Bruce arrives on that old motorcycle. So great. Minute One Hundred Ten: From The NYPD Taking Aim to The End of the Sabrett Hot Dog CartIn the one-hundred-tenth minute of The Avengers...NYPD REPRESENT! That's right, we get to talk about the NYPD taking on the Chitauri, even after finding out the National Guard isn't coming. It does give us a chance to talk about the nature of these military organizations and why, perhaps, it makes sense to not feature them in these superhero films. After all, if all the USA's military might was also here, wouldn't it seem to diminish the power of our heroes a bit? And make this feel like Independence Day? We get to talk about two more actors entering the MCU – Robert Clohessy and Enver Gjokaj. Turns out Gjokaj will actually be returning to the MCU but in the past as someone in Agent Carter. And we get to talk about their reaction to what's ostensibly some guy in a Halloween costume hopping onto the top of a car and giving them orders. That leads us to Tony and the leviathan he blasts with chaff, leading to massive destruction to not only 3 Park Ave, but also the Sabrett Hot Dog cart. It's a sad day for NYC. Minute One Hundred Nine: From Fish in a Barrel to More Fish in a BarrelRyanne Bennett from Black Girl Nerds joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-ninth minute of The Avengers...Is Chris Evans putting on his best Batman voice with his line here? It sure seems that way. This minute gives us a chance to celebrate the power of the non-supers as we really get to see Natasha and Clint doing their best to stop as many Chitauri as they can. We get a bit confused about bus placement, but eventually we figure it out. It doesn't really answer our questions as to why Clint starts by taking people out the bus window before prying the door open. Judging by the fire blast on the bus door, we think there may have been some deleted material in here that was excised. Clint also gets to use his arrows, and we get to talk about the fancy quiver he has paired with his bow and the many arrow heads – specifically the burst shot here. Nat shoots a Chitauri in the face, and behind it we see how limber these Chitauri are. All through this, we also get great video game running and jumping beats from Steve. He sure seems super after this minute. Minute One Hundred Eight: From A Resigned Loki to Fireball! Fireball! Fireball!Ryanne Bennett from Black Girl Nerds joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-eighth minute of The Avengers...Loki proves himself yet again to be ever malicious toward his brother as he stabs Thor and – after Thor's surprising body slam power move – rolls himself off the tower. But... did he know a chariot was coming? It seems far too lucky for that to happen. That brings us back to street level with Clint and Natasha. Steve comes running up. Where was he? Turns out he had a whole deleted scene where he ran off to save a family under attack from a very persistent Chitauri. Now Cap's back, but is it his super vision that sees Loki flying by? Or his super sniffer? Maybe we're just missing Loki's maniacal laugh. He sure does prove that he likes blowing stuff up! Minute One Hundred Seven: From The Arrival of the Leviathan to Thor Confronting LokiRyanne Bennett from Black Girl Nerds joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-seventh minute of The Avengers...The leviathan arrives! But... what is it? Is it actually related to the Chitauri? When they're popping out the sides, is that Chitauri babies being born? It seems that way because of the cords they shoot out with that then seem to retract back in. It's very strange. These things look cool, but how are they floating? We laugh a bit about the Chitauri that bursts into the office and starts shooting at what seem to be accountants. Just seems like a weird power move. Iron Man chases the leviathan up 5th Ave and we get some fantastic shots of him doing so. Plus, why is he asking about Hulk? Does he know something we don't know? Meanwhile, Thor tries pleading with Loki and from Loki's face, it seems like it might be working. Minute One Hundred Five: From The Brother Tussle to Hawkeye and Black Widow spotting them.Film Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-fifth minute of The Avengers...This minute does a great job of cross-cutting between the heroes as they each work to stop Loki and the Chitauri invasion. We start with Loki and Thor, then drop down to the streets to see the people of New York dealing with the attack, then up to Iron Man as he flies past, distracting the Chitauri. He's contacted by Natasha, and then they coordinate to take down some Chitauri. From there, we follow the quinjet back to the top of Stark Tower where we once again see Thor and Loki. It all works really well. We also get to talk about Thor and his brother always fighting and why this works, not to mention agree with Tony in his questioning Natasha as to why they took so long to get here. Minute One Hundred Four: From The Blue Beam to Thor Confronting His BrotherFilm Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-fourth minute of The Avengers...Tony fights on, but only in a wide shot. This minute focuses on the people of New York as the Chitauri fly down (rather quickly) and begin raining down on them with blasts from their chariots and forearm guns. It's quite a mess. But this is also where we get to really meet our waitress Beth! That's right, we land in Pershing Square Cafe where we see her and some customers fleeing the shots, eventually taking shelter in the Cafe. That means we get to do the IMDb game for Ashley Johnson, and Pete realizes he's seen her a bunch on Critical Role. We have a great locked-off shot from within a car as it flips over, but we also have a lot of shots that feel like sets, full of artifice. Or perhaps just full of Cleveland-ites as that's where it was filmed. We have a small deleted scene between Loki and The Other that doesn't work at all, and that brings us to the point where Thor makes it to New York to confront his brother. But how did he know where to go? Minute One Hundred Three: From Tony Incinerating a Few Pedestrians to Tony Incinerating a Few ChitauriFilm Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-third minute of The Avengers...More Mark VII talk! We love the way Tony's new suit attaches itself to him. But the pedestrians... wouldn't they be incinerated? Or at least have their eyes filled with dust particles? That's a fairly brutal spraying they get from Tony. At the very least, they'd be blown over. There's chat about the POV shot we get through the mask then the HUD as it closes over Tony's face, not to mention chat about the way the shot construction in these moments never quite lines up as well as it should. Is Andy the only person who thinks of Robert Paulson when Tony brings up Phil? Perhaps...This minute is the start of the blue beam! It's quite a trope, and certainly does its job here. It also means we finally get to talk a LOT about the Chitauri as they start their journey through the hole into the skies over Manhattan. Is it disorienting for them to come out and essentially be flying straight down? Seems like it may be confusing. Tony's got some cool mini-missiles in his shoulder, and there are lots of amazing shots in this minute. Too bad the enemy is so... bland. Minute One Hundred Two: From Everything on Loki to The Mark VII Attaching to TonyFilm Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-second minute of The Avengers...Tony's finishing his response to Loki, and this is where he gets close to calling out the name of the film again in this scene. It plays, but it might be too clever by half. The real issue comes immediately afterward when Loki decides to try his mind control scepter tap on Tony's chest, only to hit the arc reactor. While this is a funny gag, and certainly in the director's style, it does lead to a question we have about what they're trying to do with Loki by this point in the film. As the antagonist, it certainly seems like they're diminishing him so they can build up the Chitauri army. Is that fair to him? Perhaps that's why the end of this film feels a bit like it's got an antagonist problem. Still, it is a funny line. From there, we get to talk about Stark tech and how it perpetually seems to be ready at the very last possible second. First, why isn't Tony more injured by the two times Loki tosses him? And how does Loki feel after that Mark VII blow to the face? This begins our conversation about the Mark VII, the way it emerges, and the start of it attaching itself to Tony. It's pretty cool. Minute One Hundred One: From Loki's Periodic Reminder About the Chitauri to Tony Acknowledging Loki's Army Might Come.TwitchTV's MarvelousTay joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-first minute of The Avengers...It's been just enough time that we needed to have the Chitauri mentioned again. Tony doesn't seem to care because as he says, “We have a Hulk.” It's a fun line, but he doesn't say “the Hulk” or just “Hulk”... is he implying he knows more about where these gamma experiments are going to go? Or it is just how it's written? It's more of the fun confrontational conversation between these two. It's a battle of the egos, truly. But this is where we really get to see what Tony's trying to do. Aside from pour himself some whiskey and drink it, he also manages to get his bracelets on without Loki noticing. Sure, there's an illogical reply from Tony at one point, but just chalk it up to his grandstanding. It all plays really well. We continue Cosmic May with a look at the newest member of the Nova Corps, Sam Alexander! How does Sam stack up against other heroes, and his own expectations? Intro Last call for PuchiCon Hiatus coming up in June Background (7:05) Sam Alexander created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness in Marvel Point One #1 (Nov 2011) Character named after Jeph's son Sam who died of cancer when he was 17 Sam Alexander lives in a small Arizona town with his little sister, mother, and father Jesse, who works as a janitor at Sam's school, and is always drunkenly telling stories about how he was a member of the Nova Corps One night Jesse disappears, and then Sam is visited by Gamora & Rocket Raccoon, who give him Jesse's helmet and tell him he's the only Nova Corps member left in the galaxy - after the initial surprise, he encounters and heavily damages a Chitauri invasion fleet heading towards Earth, and upon his return gets trained by Gamora & Rocket Joins the Avengers briefly during AvX, and then allies with Speedball & Justice for a new iteration of the New Warriors Utatu eventually revealed that Jesse was alive, sending Sam into a state of elation Discovers Jesse serving as a Chitauri slave, and brings him home - only to later discover that it was a clone made by the Chitauri to get close to Sam, kill him, and get the helmet - the truth sends Sam into a depressive state Joins the Champions after Civil War II, as he Kamala and Miles are dissatisfied with the Avengers and their actions He encounters a returned Richard Rider, who mentors him for a spell After the Champions capture a major villain, Sam's helmet is confiscated because the kids went rogue in their efforts - this once again spirals him into depression, although he later gets it back Issues - Theme is looking for love in all the wrong places (9:40) Always looking for a father figure Ruby - stopped “hero-worshiping” his dad - that moment when kids realize their parents are only human and just as flawed as they are (17:38) Usually feels he's the odd man out on any team, whether the Avengers, Champions, or Nova Corps (25:56) Break (33:50) Plugs for Not If I Reboot You First, Geek Peak, and Howard Mackie Treatment (35:28) In-universe - Have Sam work on things without the helmet Out of universe - (38:07) Skit (42:25) DOC: Hello Sam, I'm Dr. Issues. SAM: Hey. DOC: Thanks for taking the time to meet with me, I know you're very busy. SAM: Yeah, well not like I had much say in the matter. DOC: I understand this isn't easy for you. SAM: I don't know why Kamala is being such a hardass about all this. She said I couldn't have the helmet back until I talked to you. DOC: Let's not focus so much on how we got here, and start talking about what we can accomplish while we're here. SAM: *mutters*Yeah, I could go get the Ultimate Nullifier from the moon dude and end this- DOC: What was that? SAM: Ugh, nevermind. I'm just sick and tired of always losing this helmet, having it taken away from me, or whatever. It's like… no one gets it. DOC: Then explain it to me. SAM: What difference would it make? DOC: Seems to me it would make all the difference in the world. The helmet sounds pretty special to you. Would it help you feel better to have me understand it? SAM: I dunno, maybe? DOC: There's your answer, then. SAM: Can you help me get it back? DOC: You said Kamala won't give it back until you talk to me, right? So, talk to me. SAM: Fine. So, this helmet… it was my dad's. He wasn't always the best dad growing up, and he told me all these stories about how he was in the Nova Corps and he fought all these amazing battles in space and saved people all the time. I never believed him. And then one day he disappeared without a trace, but he left the helmet to me. Well, he left it to a talking raccoon and a green assassin lady, but he told them to give it to me. And it gives me all kinds of awesome powers. I can fly, I can fire energy blasts, I'm super strong. That helmet made me the only Nova Corpsman left. Well, at least until Rich came back. And it made me an Avenger, a Champion. It's helped me save the planet, the universe, other worlds. Yeah, it's brought me some trouble, but it also helped me protect my family more times than I can count. And it's helping me search for my dad, because he's alive somewhere out there, and I'm gonna find him one day, no matter what it takes. So this helmet… it's a huge part of me, it's who I am. And every time I don't have it, I feel like… like I'm losing a part of myself. Like I always have to keep fighting to keep my identity. DOC: I see. SAM: And I wish I could make other people see how much it means to me. DOC: Have you told them that? SAM: Yeah, lots of times. DOC: What kind of reaction do you get? SAM: People roll their eyes, or they laugh and say stuff like “you need to be a hero without the helmet” or crap like that. And it's like, obviously I can't fly through space without the helmet, so yeah it makes a difference. I'm not, like, Thor or somebody. Doesn't make me less of a hero. DOC: I understand. SAM: Do you really…REALLY? *sarcasm* you've traveled to other worlds and saved people? DOC: No…I've listened to hundreds, maybe thousands of people place part or all of their identity into one facet of their life and whenever it's not there, they try to compensate by recreating that part of themselves in other areas where it just won't fit. SAM: Oh. OK. That… kinda sounds a little accurate… DOC: Then when you try to loop in the ones that you think would understand, they're dismissive because they already have their own defense mechanisms and don't necessarily want to open up that can of worms talking to you about it. SAM: Uh…yeah…I guess that's right DOC: And at least there's someone that can show you how to do things right…if you're lucky, but then they probably don't want to stick around for all of the things going on in your head, and THEY bounce, so you feel like you're back to square one again! SAM: I mean, sometimes that's true, like with Rich. Who am I compared to that guy? But he knows what he's doing, not that I don't but, come on, man! And there's one thing you probably can't relate to still, because nobody really does. DOC: That being… SAM: *pause, deep breath* Can I ask you for an opinion? DOC: My degree and my session timer say yes. SAM: Ok…ok…a lot of times, I mention my dad, and that's when people shut me out. I don't know why. I think it's because they think I'm being a moron or too soft. Is that it? DOC: *pause* I doubt it. SAM: Why'd you hesitate? DOC: Because I don't know. I don't know all of the people you interact with. But I will tell you this. In general, people don't think about you nearly as much as you think they do, unless you are directly bringing things up about yourself. Then the switch goes on and they have to use their mental bandwidth in a way that they didn't expect. I have to pause, and it's my job. Imagine what that's like for a layperson…even a superpowered layperson. SAM: Huh. That's deep. DOC: It can go deeper. I don't think that's your real question. SAM: I don't understand. DOC: You didn't get this far to say all of this stuff to me just for the helmet. Your dad question is right street, wrong block. SAM: So I'm in the neighborhood? DOC: I…guess…thank you for explaining the metaphor. Anyway, my point is, I think you're having some conviction issues about the search for your father. SAM: It's not that I don't believe he's out there. It's just… I had thought the search was over. I brought him home. And he turned out to be a clone. That… that broke me. Because it was like losing him a second time. So now I'm back at square one. DOC: Now that, I won't pretend to understand. That type of grief doesn't vanish. Just so you know, there's no right answer. If you want to actively search, maybe take a set amount of time when you can, it makes sense. If you want to put it on the back burner, and focus on other things while you heal, that works too. Either way, we can work out a plan. SAM: Does that plan involve me getting my helmet back? DOC: *sigh* Well since you have to function at a high level I guess I have some pull to say you should have the helmet. But I'm not going to fight anyone who takes it away from you. Work out your own relationships, ok? SAM: Sooooo…I DO get the helmet back? DOC: Yes. Fine. But my point is if Kamala says no - SAM: *ignoring the last part* I get my hellllllmet, I get my helllllllmet…SWEET!
