On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys discuss Marvel's Secret Invasion on Disney+ Should we have known it was going to be a bad show with the AI generated intro? Were the first two episodes the best in the show? Is Marvel making flops on purpose? Did we like this more than Moon Knight? Who is a skrull in this series? Did Samuel L Jackson and his wife have good chemistry? Should Jake not be Cody's friend over his enjoyment of Captain Marvel? What is the point of all these side characters in the MCU? Did they do Maria Hill dirty in this show? Did this even need to be a show? Was this better than the comic book event? Was Emilia Clarke's powers stupid? Did Gravik look cool? Who was Don Skreedle? Was this show so bad that it has us questioning people's acting capabilities? Is the MCU so interconnected that it's detrimental? Was this as jokey as more recent marvel projects? Was Olivia Coleman a good character? Was Abraham Lincoln a Skrull? Is capitalism ruining the MCU? Was this show so bad that we want to get rid of Disney+? Was the only thing they took from the comic the worst part of the comic? Do you miss anything if you skip this? Was Bob Marley a Skrull? Who are we in the show? Did Anthony use all his senses to come to his final Joe Pesci score? Is this the lowest Joe Pesci rating we've ever given? Minute One Hundred Forty Three: From The Final Climactic Beats in Alan Silvestri's Amazing Theme to The Studio Logos... With a Little Stop at Shawarma Palace in BetweenMike Gravagno from The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-third and final minute of The Avengers...The credits finally come to an end, but not before we get to talk about the MPAA film numbers. We also ponder when Dolby Atmos started up, and sure enough it was 2012. Not in time for this film unfortunately. What we're really here for, though, is shawarma. Shawarma Palace. This glorious post-credit sequence shifted the tone of post-credit sequences and allowed later filmmakers to be goofy with them from time to time. We're fans. Minute One Hundred Forty Two: From The Rest of the Visual Effects Thank You List to The Start of the Logos. The TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network's own Justin Jaeger joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-second minute of The Avengers...We continue our journey through the credits. We get all 214 people who worked on the stereoscopic conversion for this film, which leads to a fun conversation about going to 3D movies. We talk a bit about the main title and the iconic Avengers logo. There's also 20 people credited as helping with the celebration montage, which is cool. We talk about Alan Silvestri, about the four songs in the film, including one we completely missed when Tony and Pepper are first in Stark Tower. We talk a bit about the non-endorsement by NASA at the end, and we each pick one person to talk about. JJ picks Depth Lead Katherine Rodtsbrooks (now Katherine Renee Jones) who was involved in the 3D conversion. Pete picks Craig Kyle, a comic book artist and executive producer given special thanks. Minute One Hundred Forty One: From The 34 Lighting TDs•Shader Writers at Weta Digital to The First Six of the Visual Effects ThanksThe TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network's own Steve Sarmento joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-first minute of The Avengers...We're knee deep in credits for the visual effects teams who worked on this movie. We look at how many people are credited with each team here, and then we jump into our names that we each picked. Steve picked the brothers Greg and Colin Strause, who run [hy*drau”lx], which spurs on a chat about the world of VFX right now, particularly with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on. From there, Andy talks about Joel Gerlach who worked as a VFX artist at Luma Pictures on this film, but has since gone on to create his own VFX company. Pete closes things out with a chat about Michael Corcoran, but we're still not sure where he's actually credited in this film. Regardless, he worked on creature effects, so we assume that means the Chitauri? Or maybe he was responsible for the exploding leviathan eyeball! Minute One Hundred Thirty Six: From Joss Whedon's Name on Iron Man's Chest to The Opening Riffs of Soundgarden's Live to RiseEric Deutsch from Time to Rewind, Escape From New York Minute, and Flash Gordon Minute joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-sixth minute of The Avengers...We end the special credits with the director's name, which gives us a chance to dig into Joss Whedon's career a bit and our thoughts on him, and we only call him Tig Notaro a few times! After that, we transition to Sanctuary and find The Other monologuing to the back of a throne. Why are they here? Is this Thanos' thinking spot? We spend a bit of time breaking down The Other's line, and then we get into the appearance of Thanos, aka Man No. 1. That means we get to break down Damion Poitier a bit as well as he portrayed him here. It's a great conversation really breaking this mid-credits scene down, what it meant at the time, Death's role possibly in the franchise after this, and where it took us. Minute One Hundred Thirty Five: From An Anti-Armor Missile in Iron Man's Gauntlet to a Hole in Iron Man's ChestJoining us today, it's filmmaker and TruStory FM regular Tommy Metz III, director of ‘30 Nights of Sex to Save Your Marriage'.In the one-hundred-thirth-fifth minute of The Avengers...We're finishing the special credits (thanks to Andrew Darowski's kids for the nickname!) with Tommy. We chat through the various images we see and again try to figure out if there's any rhyme or reason as to who gets which image, other than the six principals. It doesn't make much sense. Would it have made more sense to go a different route so they would've had more options for characters like Hulk? From there, we talk through each of the people listed and discuss some of their awards wins and nominations, along with some of our favorites of the films they've done. And lots of laughs. Minute One Hundred Thirty Four: From A Big A to Iron Man's PalmAndrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from the Protagonist Podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-fourth minute of The Avengers...We finish pulling out of the broken windows at Stark Tower, finding just the A left in the STARK signage out here. We also get a small WHOOSH right when we pass the A, as if to tell us that it's something we need to notice. We talk about ideas like this, who decides them, and how they end up in here. We finish our chat about Tony and Pepper and whatever it is they're doing with their hologram of the building blueprint. Did you notice the quinjet in it? It's pretty cool. As promised, today is our conversation looking at the alternate ending with Maria Hill closing out her questioning by the World Security Council. It's a bit awkward and way too long. While it gives us the rest of the bit of Hill that we've been enjoying develop since those opening moments and would've been great to give that extra bit of character development to Cobie Smulders, it really does feel unnecessary in the end. But maybe that's because it's so long and has such clunky dialogue. And we're done! It's time for credits. Andrew says his kids call this section the ‘special credits,' so we'll adopt that from them. We briefly discuss some of the team here that's new to the MCU, but largely we talk about the art that comes with these special credits. Why is Cap so dominant throughout, to the point where we're getting the buckle on the back of his shield and his torn and damaged shoulder of his costume featured? Black Widow's only featured once? Some of the items are cool to look at, but it's a strange set of choices they used as the featured elements from our heroes. Not to mention Iron Man takes forever to show up and Hulk doesn't even appear by the time this minute ends. What gives? It's all interesting and worth thinking about. Minute One Hundred Thirty Three: From Hill's Questions for Fury to Repair Work on Tony's Penthouse.Andrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from the Protagonist Podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-third minute of The Avengers...Fury finishes his power walk, but what's with all the scuff marks in the hallway there? Were they moving a piano through here? Or does this have to do with his bazooka love? It's a bit of an awkward cut to Fury's conversation with Maria Hill from here. Perhaps this is because there's an alternate ending involving the closure with Maria Hill and her questioning by the World Security Council. We'll save that for tomorrow's conversation, but we do discuss the rough edit. We also talk about Fury's power positions here on the bridge, including his standing on the circular window at the front. We question his thinking because of the structural damage to this ship, but maybe it just makes Fury even more badass? We also get to discuss the SHIELD logo built into the floor and the attempt for the camera to show it to us, even if it is hard to see. From there, we head to Stark Tower where we find Tony and Pepper looking at Stark-techified blueprints of the new Avengers Tower as well as quinjets. It's fun to see them playing with all of this, but the editing's all over the place. And where are all the people that should be working on the mess in here? Why do they have those Stark-techified ladders in here? And why do they need ladders anyway? Minute One Hundred Thirty Two: From The Tesseract Being Dealt With to Fury's Dramatic WalkTwitchTV's MarvelousTay joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-second minute of The Avengers...While Fury talks with the World Security Council, we follow our heroes in Central Park as they ship Loki off to Asgard. Where did this handy Tesseract travel tube come from? Did Erik whip that up in his spare time? It's certainly convenient, and clearly knows how to get Thor and Loki back to Asgard. What's with the muzzle Loki's wearing? We ponder the need for something like this as he's not a villain who says spells or attacks with his mouth. We assume it's just because it makes him look caught that much more.We watch our heroes go their separate ways (though completely ignoring Erik – so much so we don't even discuss his departure, or lack thereof, in the episode). Tony and Bruce are scientist best buddies now! And Tony has a sweet ride. Too bad it's not Acura real... yet.We end our conversation discussing Fury and the WSC. Minute One Hundred Thirty One: From The Final News Montage to The Tesseract Where It Belongs.Bubbawheat from the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-first minute of The Avengers...This minute is full of lots of clips from all the various screens we're watching, and we try talking about the all in one capacity or another. We've got news feeds plus what looks like various YouTube types of videos people have posted, all relating to the celebration of – or skepticism with – the Avengers and their role in the Battle of New York. We talk the IMDb credits for our various speaking actors, and lo and behold one of them is none other than Stan Lee! That's right – this minute features his cameo. It's not one of our favorites, but it's still fun. From there, we shift to Nick Fury and his tense discussion he's having with the members of the World Security Council. We talk more about this shady organization and wonder why it will largely be dropped from future films. We also get to talk about our heroes rendezvousing at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, wondering why they met here to ship Loki off instead of just staying in Stark Tower where they already were. Regardless, this minute gives us plenty to talk about. Minute One Hundred Thirty: From Realizing There's One More Thing to Shawna Lynde's Brief AppearanceTwitchTV's MarvelousTay joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirtieth minute of The Avengers...Break time! But not quite. Tony really wants to get to Shawarma Palace, but he'll have to wait because they have to deal with Loki first. But how does Clint get there? And do Natasha and Erik find a ladder or something to climb down? Is that how she got the scepter in the first place? We find Loki barely moving, but alive. He clearly looks defeated, perhaps so much so that he doesn't hear the six heroes sneak up on him because when he turns around, they're practically in his face. We love the fantastic pose here showing our heroes assembling and in the scope of things, it doesn't matter much that Loki doesn't hear them coming because it looks so damn cool.We jump to the helicarrier where we're looking at several monitors, watching the various news feeds that Fury's looking at. Minute One Hundred Twenty Nine: From Tossing Tony's Mask to Not Finished YetMatthew Costello, author of several works on politics and superheroes including Secret Identity Crisis: Comic books and the Unmasking of Cold War America, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-ninth minute of The Avengers...Thor rips the face of Tony's mask off. The image of the face plate laying in the rubble was something we saw in the alternate opening for the film. We talk a bit about what that would've meant to have seen it then. Hulk roars and Tony snaps awake then has a line about hoping no one kissed him. This shifts us into some talk about fan fic and other ways this scene may be interpreted, regardless of any intentions from the writers or director. That wistful look on Steve's face... There's plenty to discuss about camera technique in a post-climax scene, including the possible trope of the slow pull-back on our team. We also talk about the wrap-up of the battle and wonder why this ended up being put together without Clint or Natasha (despite the obvious reasons that they're still at the tops of high-rises). And we wonder how Tony ever managed to spot the Shawarma Palace in the middle of his fighting. Minute One Hundred Twenty Eight: From The Fall of Tony to Concern About Their Fallen FriendRobin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Sword Boys joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-eighth minute of The Avengers...Tony continues his unconscious falling from space back toward the one-sided hole, but will he make it? That's the big question on everyone's minds below. Unfortunately, with a nuclear explosion heading their way from the other side of the hole, Steve has to make the tough call to close the hole, potentially leaving Tony behind. It's the tough call a military leader has to know when to make, and he makes it, knowing it's potentially for the good of Earth. After all, if he doesn't shut it, that nuclear blast will push through the hole.It does lead to questions about how much radiation would actually make it through the hole, not to mention why it takes so long to get to the hole. We also wonder about the edge of the hole. Is it tangible? Or is it more like a laser that'd cut you in half if you hit it? And why, on Earth's side, isn't it depicted as something people actually have to fly through in order to get from the hole? But the heroes do shut the hole and Tony makes it through. He's unconscious, and luckily, Hulk decides he's going to save Tony and he does so. Then he casually tosses him to the side. It's touching and funny. Minute One Hundred Twenty Seven: From Tony's Final Push to Tony Falling in SpaceIn the one-hundred-twenty-seventh minute of The Avengers...Tony somehow manages to not hit Stark Tower, which now looks like AI Tower. It's a bit ridiculous, but it's a movie so it's fine. Hulk watches in a dramatic shot, as does Nat. Where's Clint? Still stuck in that apartment? Cap and Thor watch from the streets below. Tony flies the nuke through the one-sided space hole and everyone cheers, but the battle's not over yet. Shouldn't Fury be, you know, directing or something?Meanwhile, we join Tony on the other side of the one-sided hole, but couldn't he have just tossed the nuke through and not gone through himself? If his intention was to hit the Chitauri mothership – which he does – wouldn't it have been better to see him aiming it once through? As it stands, it just looks like he keeps flying straight, until his suit powers down.Wouldn't his suit have been bette designed by this point after learning about near space flight in the first Iron Man movie? And even if it powered down, shouldn't he just keep moving along with the missile because of the vacuum of space? At least the shoulder units pop off to help propel him backward but was that enough?Regardless, Tony has a spiritual moment here as he seems to be dying. It's a powerful moment and we're fans of the moment, even if some of the logistics don't make sense. Minute One Hundred Twenty Six: From Tony's Missile Chase to Tony's Missile Heave HoLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-sixth minute of The Avengers...The chase is on! Tony spots the nuke and does a great U-turn under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge between Staten Island and Long Island. What does this say about where the F-35 was though? Wasn't the helicarrier off the east coast of Long Island? And why don't we ever get to see the Statue of Liberty in this film? Even in the background of one of these shots? Ah well.Speaking of Tony's U-turn, the water explosion when he blasts his thrusters at it... quite a kick! So again, what happened to those people under him when he first got his Mark VII on? Ouch.Tony's plan is to catch the nuke and push it up through the space hole. But shouldn't the team on the helicarrier still be doing things? Like scrambling jets? Calling New York's leaders to evacuate the city? You know, things like that? While it might make sense, we do agree that there's a story element of having everyone watch that gives us a sense that everything's been done and all they – just like us – can do is watch. It's fine. And that leads to Tony's final push. Minute One Hundred Twenty Five: From Pushing the Button to Tony's Info About the Nuke Coming InIn the one-hundred-twenth-fifth minute of The Avengers...The nuke is off and away! We've got a two minute and thirty second clock that starts ticking right here. Will it play out in real time as it does in movie time? We'll find out two-and-a-half minutes from now! We come into the fight in slow motion on Thor and Cap as they each retrieve their tools, then ramp up as they battle the Chitauri. It's an odd moment but does work okay. And they play it well sharing their pain and their ribs. Literally.Erik and Natasha work on destroying the Tesseract energy with the sceptre but how did she get it from Tony's patio? Is there a ladder we don't see? We still have issues with Erik's secret back door to destroy the Tesseract, but it is what it is. Minute One Hundred Twenty Four: From Director Nick Fury in Motion to the F-35 Lightning II in MotionLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-fourth minute of The Avengers...Hill's comments on the F-35 Lightning II that's been put into action by the World Security Council sends Fury scrambling to stop it in the only way he knows how. A bazooka. Uh, is this Fury's weapon of choice? Is there bazooka storage in the elevator? We decide that Fury's such a fan of bazookas and blowing things up with them on the helicarrier that there's likely bazooka storage all over the place. But Fury does take out one of his own aircraft. Presumably, he wouldn't have cared if it blew up entirely or fell off the side of the helicarrier, killing the pilot, because the nuke wasn't launched. So then why does he hesitate when he pulls his sidearm to take aim at the second F-35? Shouldn't he just unload his clip? It's a bit of a trope that doesn't play well here for his character. The fact that the World Security Council did decide to launch two F-35s to take on NYC does pique our curiosity. Why is this the route they choose? We do get to sort out a bit as to who's got earbuds for communication here. We also talk a bit about Tony's HUD and how it's being portrayed through the film and the shift we'll start noticing here as we move forward toward the end. It's an interesting shift to allow us to get more personal with Tony. Minute One Hundred Twenty Three: From Close-Range Arrow Fighting to A Bird in MotionRobin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Sword Boys joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-third minute of The Avengers...What happens when Hawkeye runs out of arrows? We get to explore that in this minute in great detail. First off, how does he even get them out of his quiver? It doesn't look like arrowheads could make it out of its top. We try to figure out the system he has for selecting arrowheads. Is it a combination system with the buttons on his bow? Or more like an up-down-select set of buttons? And how many extra arrowheads does he keep in his quiver? Another question that comes up relates to pulling arrows out of victims to reuse the shaft. Is there a button on the trigger than leaves the head behind, which is why there's no arrowhead on the one he struck down this Chitauri with? And does he have some sort of sanitation system to clean the viscera off the shaft before reusing it? So many questions...That takes us to his exciting escape from the Chitauri chariots heading his way to blow up the top of the building. It's his handy grappling hook arrowhead, and that creates all its own questions. How does that little head hold so much weight? What's with the cable? And how does it attach to his bow? Regardless, it does save Clint's life, even if he's in a lot of pain afterward. Of course, Kate Bishop's watching from the across the street, lest we forget.Meanwhile, Hulk's taking out Chitauri on a building top and then is surrounded by nearly two dozen more that blast him. Why doesn't he jump out? We discuss in detail, before heading to the helicarrier where we see a jet called into action from Jenny Agutter's member of the WSC and Maria Hill taking note. Minute One Hundred Twenty Two: From Erik's Secret Safety to Quickdraw Archery on the RooftopLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-second minute of The Avengers...There's a space where the film might have made more sense if Erik was blinded by his passion for science and willingly did all this work to make this machine, only to realize at this point that he was wrong. That's not the story we get, and so the fact that Erik somehow knew to build a safety into his machine feels very heavy-handed to us. But the story needs to be moving along quickly as we're entering the climactic finale and just need to make things quickly understood. That takes us to Thor using his incredible leg muscles to stabilize himself on this chariot as he takes out several Chitauri before completely getting knocked off by a leviathan crashing through what turns out to be the Baxter Building, at least based on the real world address. Why was this poor friendly sea cow of the skies flying through a building? Well, turns out Iron Man was shooting it with lasers and chasing it. No wonder it's running and likely scared!Tony decides to do his little Jonah move which speaks to the fact that he really didn't know or understand the actual story. That aside, we get to see his Thigh Side-Winders in action! The explosion does throw him to product placement corner before we return to Barton on the roof. Minute One Hundred Twenty One: From Nat's Tuck-and-Roll Landing to Erik's Big Reveal... AlmostLachlan Thiele from the Quiet on Set Podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-first minute of The Avengers...Nat nails her landing on the tippity-top of Stark Tower, and luckily they have walls so she doesn't roll right off. What's perfect about her landing is the fantastic match cut we get from her flipping her hair (certainly required in every film by this point) to Loki doing the exact same thing. Those gorgeous locks. The filmmakers clearly knew what they were doing with this moment. But what is Loki looking at? It's not Nat because she's behind and above him. It's not Clint because he's 400 feet below him. It's not Hulk because he hasn't arrived yet. We stew on it and think perhaps he didn't realize she leapt from her chariot so might be scanning the skies for her? That does take us to the arrival of Hulk, which gives us plenty to discuss. The humor. The “puny god” line. Loki's speechifying. The film style where if it's not in frame, it doesn't exist. Asgardian pain tolerance. The awkward shifting of antagonist with the end of our villain in a comedy beat. It's a great moment but certainly brings up many angles of discussion. We end our conversation back on the roof with Nat as she talks to Erik about his machine. It's a shame it's a bit of an exposition dump, but we are at that point in the film where they're trying to hurry us through to the end. Still, Erik does give us a line here which certainly feels like it's setting him up as a tremendous villain in future films. It's a shame he was never used in that capacity. Minute One Hundred Twenty: From Fury Recognizing the Council's Decision to Black Widow's Leap of FaithFather David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minutes community, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twentieth minute of The Avengers...Ah, the World Security Council. We have fun delving into the complexities of a shadow organization like this, and how it relates to SHIELD. And Fury's positional relationship to them – are they all equal in their roles or is Fury subordinate? And if he's subordinate, should we care more that he's not listening to them? The answer is no because 1) Fury's on the side of our heroes and we have a relationship with them, and 2) it's Samuel L. Jackson. But why the decision to use a nuke instead of something a bit smaller? It hasn't even been an hour since the attack started. Wouldn't they try some other methods first? This leads us to talk about the type of film we're watching – it's a superhero film. We need superhero-sized threats. Just as we've discussed previously how it wouldn't be the same if the might of the US military was here fighting along side the Avengers, it wouldn't be the same if they were fighting simple missiles. It needed to be a nuke.Still, we're not thrilled with more of those implications brought on by the choice. From there, we find Black Widow being pursued by Loki and Clint offering to help. Aside from some elevation complaints, it's a wonderful sequence and leads to a great gag as Loki catches Hawkeye's arrow before it blows up in his face.We end our conversation talking about Nat's crazy leap, the dodgy effects, and Father David's final Christ and the Cape segment this season. Minute One Hundred Nineteen: From Cap Lost in a Looking Glass to Cap Lost in His ThoughtsFather David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minutes community, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-nineteenth minute of The Avengers...We're back with Cap in that little side mirror. What were they trying to say here? Or was it just something to do because it looks cool and perhaps feels a bit more like an image you'd find on the pages of a comic book? We land on the latter. Regarding Hawkeye's message to Cap, however, we have no idea how he knows there's an issue in the bank. He's 400 feet in the air, after all, on the top of a building. That takes us to our deleted scene where we get more backstory with Beth the waitress as she flees the Pershing Street Cafe, makes it through the streets, sees Officer Saunders get killed by a Chitauri blast, then gets taken herself. She ends up in the 42nd Street Bank as a hostage with dozens of other civilians, where we find her in the theatrical cut. There's some odd and uncomfortable Holocaust imagery and themes here that come across more in the deleted scenes, but even without that, it raises too many questions for us. Why are the Chitauri rounding people up and killing them in this way? Why not just gun them down in the street? And why does their bomb only seem to work on two planes? All that said, we have a great fight between Captain America and the Chitauri, not to mention a fantastically cool escape that Cap does, as the Chitauri are disintegrated by their own bomb. That leads us back outside where Cap's dazed and looks at all the damage, and Beth the waitress just might actually recognize him. His mask did get ripped off, after all. Anyway, it's a confusing scene but does have some fun action. Plus, we get another Christ and the Cape from Father David!
