Two Chinese logging companies are now the largest timber harvesters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with concessions sized at more than 3 million hectares. The firms, Wan Peng and Booming Green, are engaged in industrial-scale logging to export raw timber mostly back to China. But researchers at the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) also discovered that both companies are engaged in a wide range of illegal activities, everything from illegal timber smuggling to bribery. Luke Allen, a campaign and advocacy officer at EIA, joins Géraud and Cobus to discuss the new report that details the various forestry crimes committed by the two Chinese companies and how the Chinese and DRC governments should respond. Hello Epic listeners! This week, we'd like to introduce you to another action-packed audio drama on the Realm network that we think you'll enjoy -- The Leviathan Chronicles! The Leviathan Chronicles | Season 1, Episode 1: Evil Undertow A highly advanced Chinese submarine, the Hei Ten Shi, is on a mysterious mission to deliver an otherworldly cargo to the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the Earth's ocean. The Chinese vessel suffers damage while maneuvering through the tight oceanic canyons. Because the vessel is now sinking rapidly, it enters a race against time to reach its destination, deliver its cargo and rise to the surface. But before it can release the cargo that is weighing it down, the Chinese vessel is intercepted by an American submarine, the USS Dakota, on a routine patrol to Pearl Harbor. The Chinese submarine dives to over 21,000 feet to avoid engagement. But before the Chinese can escape, the cargo "activates" sending out strange pulses of radiation that cause both the American and Chinese submarines to have massive system failures. As the Hei Ten Shi separates the main components of its ship, the Dakota fears an attack and launches its torpedoes destroying a large part of the Hei Ten Shi. One year later, a CIA operative named Whitt Roberts is called to meet with Jason Sterling. Sterling is part of the Blackdoor Group, a highly clandestine arm of the CIA that acts in complete autonomy from the rest of the US Government and its laws. Whitt has been called upon to investigate the disappearance of the Dakota, but Jason Sterling seems to know more than he is letting on. Whitt explains that a powerful signal was sent out from the Marianas Trench. But what is even more unusual is that the signal appears to have been answered from a source in outer space. Jason tells Whitt that he wants him to abandon his search for the Dakota and focus on a new target...in New York City. Can you imagine a life where productivity and joy are seamlessly intertwined, reflecting God's grand design for human fulfillment? Join us as Scott Allen, Dwight Vogt, and Luke Allen uncover the deep connection between fruitfulness and joy in this enriching episode of Ideas Have Consequences. Through a fascinating exploration of the Latin word "fructus," which means both fruit and enjoyment, we reveal how living a productive life aligns with God's desire for our happiness. We draw from personal stories and scriptural references, showing how our mission as Christians includes transforming nations to reflect the beauty and truth of God's kingdom.Reflect on the biblical imagery of a tree planted by water as we discuss scriptures like Jeremiah 17:8 and Psalm 92. Our dialogue contrasts the biblical view of children as blessings with modern cultural narratives that often see them as burdens. We affirm that despite the challenges, the joys of family and procreation are deeply rooted in divine truths. Moreover, we explore the interconnectedness of love, joy, and fruitfulness, particularly through the lens of the fruits of the Spirit, and share touching personal anecdotes that demonstrate the profound joy brought by love.We also delve into how meaningful work, faith, and family are key components of a fulfilling life, referencing Arthur Brooks' research on happiness. From the sacred-secular divide exemplified by Eric Liddell to the transformative power of joyful Christian communities, our conversation emphasizes that God's purpose for us transcends spiritual endeavors alone. Discover how joy-filled lives can be a powerful witness to the world and learn how embodying this joy can inspire societal change. Tune in to rediscover what it means to disciple nations and create Christ-honoring cultures that embody the character of the living God.

Episode 422, "The Harkening." I harken back to Rob telling me "everyone gets afraid, dummy." (It's Not Just You, Murray!) I have to watch out for "Drum fever." I harken back to when I said I thought The Marvels was gonna bomb, and it did. I harken back to the motion picture Lethal Weapon 2, and discover they go to my Subway in it! I harken back to this past Saturday, which was effectively Luke Allen's Day Off (minus anyone looking even remotely like Simone being around me) Unfortunately it left me with one of the worst hangovers Ive ever had. I offer my thoughts and insights to the new David Fincher flick, "The Killer."

It's time to catch up with a good friend of The Biscuit's, Luke Allen.Since he was an enthusiastic film maker in his teens, Luke has been regularly guesting on The Biscuit and we always take a deep dive into great topics when he is on the show. Today's episode is of no exception.Luke talks to us about his decision to leave college and concentrate on his work on-set and in the writers rooms as the experience he has received there is ten to the dozen. We find out about Luke's new production company "Ask Seek Knock" The name of this paying homage to this Christian faith, it is derived from the passage Matthew 7:7 'Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you'Of course we started talking about religion and how it all plays into comedy writing. Luke has some goals that he has set himself that, if done correctly, could pay off really well for him. But there is one conundrum to solve first, how does one write GOOD Christian humour?Yes we go into conversations that may seem like troubled waters in this one, but Luke is my friend and I am comfortable having these conversations with him, it's healthy. Plus, it wouldn't be a Luke Allen guest appearance if it wasn't edgy!

Welcome to part 2 of this 2-part series exploring what it means to be human in light of God's design for us. If you have not listened to part one, we would encourage you to start there. This week, we explore the two most prominent worldviews in the West that are vying for the redefinition of what it means to be human, as featured in The Atlantic's article “The People Cheering for Humanity's End” by Adam Kirsch. Anthropocene Anti-Humanism, commonly known as extreme environmentalism and Transhumanism, dangerously distort and diminish the true value of human life. Humans are not a blight on this planet or a biological machine that needs to be mechanically improved; instead, we are made in the image of God with souls and intrinsic value. For those of you who are new, Ideas Have Consequences is a podcast of the Disciple Nations Alliance. Our host is Scott Allen, who's joined by his coworkers Dwight Vogt and Shawn Carson, and our producer is Luke Allen.Website: Disciple Nations AllianceEpisode Landing Page
The crucial moment in so many stories about leaving the Orthodox community is the decision itself, which is frequently portrayed as a painful and heroic act, one that requires tremendous willpower. But leaving rarely works this way; instead, it is a messy and gradual process, one that can leave scars on both the leaver and their community. This episode examines the act of leaving, and whether it is always the leaver who decides that it's time to go. Episode Credits: Written by Naomi Seidman and Produced by M. Louis Gordon. The secular world has a narrative about what it means to leave Orthodox Judaism. The Orthodox world has a narrative, too, one that treats those who leave as pitiful people who were dealt a bad hand in life. This story is so deeply ingrained that even those who leave take it with them, whether they want to or not. What does it mean to shed that self-perception? One of the deep ironies of leaving Orthodox Judaism is that people ask you to tell the story of your exit over and over again. Some people who left even make their living telling that story. Why do people who have no connection to Orthodox Judaism find these stories so interesting, and why does telling the story feel false even when it's completely true? Episode Credits: Written by Naomi Seidman and Produced by M. Louis Gordon. Recorded by Francois Heroux and Lucien Lozon at MCS Studios Toronto. Mixed by Cory Choy at Silver Sound NYC, with theme music by Luke Allen. Our Senior Producer is David Zvi Kalman. Heretic in the House is a podcast from the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America.
