Love it or hate it, everyone's talking about Blood of Hercules. Jasmine Mas's catapulting from shifter romance to new adult romantasy shocked booktok and normal people alike. And intrepid bottom-feeding trend chasers Jay and Andrew are no exception. Having faced books that left more to be desired and others that are ontologically evil, they were ready for anything—anything BUT what was about to be thrown at them. Brooding boys, sassy snakes, enemies to lovers back to enemies, unambiguously unwanted advances, and a really “memorable” protagonist. Step into the SBU club room and join Jay and Andrew in a much-too-long discussion covering everything from trailer park thermodynamics to the use of parentheses in prose to the dynamics of fantasy vs reality to unqualified and over-simplified explorations of feminism to who is and who is not welcome in my shed. Not gonna lie, this one's a little intense.

Understanding Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation with Corey Jackson

In this enlightening conversation, I sat down with Corey Jackson, a prominent figure in mindfulness research and emotional regulation, to explore the intricate world of mindfulness and metacognitive approaches to emotion. We traversed through the realms of Buddhist psychology, the impact of mindfulness on anxiety and depression, and the importance of attentional control. What You'll Learn: Mindfulness and Metacognitive Therapy: Corey discussed the differences between traditional cognitive-behavioural models and metacognitive models. He detailed how the latter focuses on metacognitive beliefs and how adjusting these beliefs can affect anxiety and depression more effectively. This model, often overlooked, offers a promising avenue for those dealing with mental health challenges. Attention and Its Role: Corey and I delved into the critical aspect of attention in shaping our reality. Drawing parallels with William James's theories and contemporary neuroscience, we examined how controlled attention can lead to better emotional regulation. Corey emphasised the importance of knowing not just what you pay attention to, but how you attend to it, and how this awareness can transform your emotional and psychological well-being. Traditional vs. Modern Mindfulness Practices: A significant portion of our conversation focused on comparing traditional Buddhist mindfulness practices with the modern, often simplified versions popularised in the West. Corey highlighted the rich history and depth of traditional practices, which often encompass a broader system of mental cultivation beyond just breath awareness. The Importance of Judgments: We explored the role of judgments in our mental and emotional lives. Corey challenged the popular Western notion of nonjudgmental awareness, explaining how traditional practices encouraged good judgment to guide behaviour aligned with personal goals and virtues. The Role of Emotions: Corey shared insights from his work with emotional balance, particularly how emotions serve as signposts indicating important events. We discussed strategies from both Eastern and Western philosophies to manage emotions, transform emotional states, and cultivate a balanced emotional life. Key Takeaways: Mindfulness as a Multifaceted Tool Attention and Emotional Control Judgment is Crucial Traditional Practices Hold Rich Insights Emotions are Indicative, Not the Enemy Resources: Visit Corey Jackson's website for more about his work and offerings. Explore Amishi Jha's research on mindfulness and attention for further insights into the neuroscience behind these practices Support and Share: If you found this conversation insightful, consider exploring Corey's online courses to further your understanding and practice of mindfulness and emotional balance. Cultivating emotional balance is a skill that benefits everyone, and Corey’s expert guidance offers a valuable path toward achieving it. 00:59 PhD Journey and Challenges 02:45 Exploring Mindfulness Mechanisms 04:30 Metacognitive Model and Therapy 08:15 Traditional vs. Modern Mindfulness 10:13 Brooding vs. Reflective Rumination 12:45 Contemplative Practices and Wisdom 17:26 Secularisation of Mindfulness 29:08 Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Observing Thoughts 29:59 Comparing Buddhist and Tibetan Views on Thought Observation 31:23 Attention and Attentional Control in Various Fields 33:20 The Role of Attention in Tibetan Buddhism 35:07 Managing Anger and Emotional Reactions 37:28 The Stoic Approach to Anger 39:14 Paul Ekman's Insights on Emotions 44:17 Controlled vs. Captured Attention 50:41 Brain Activity Patterns in Meditators 53:15 Corey Jackson's Work and Online Programs 55:13 Concluding Thoughts and Future ProjectsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Allow this music to wash over you. Float and embrace its tones. Gently relax into its textured patterns and resonance. Let the tears flow. Let love surround you. It's a place to feel set free and held. I love how emotive and pensive it is. Brooding and cascading. Like we can be. This harp journey came to me after five challenging weeks in Scotland. The difficulties and solitude I experienced were coupled with experiences of magical sunsets and seashore walks. So much beauty and so much sadness all rolled into one. Wow. This piece is in the Romanian Scale - D Dorian, which is the fourth mode of A Harmonic Minor. ★ Support this podcast ★

Are #TradWives Dangerous or Just Ridiculous With Kathryn Jezer Morton

Let's settle this debate once and for all...is #TradWife content actually dangerous, or just stupid? Today I talk toThe Cut's Brooding columnist Kathryn Jezer Morton about her column on this very subject. Spoiler alert: I think it is dangerous and here is why. #TradWife content on social media strips the idea of motherhood of all of its unseen, really hard labor, and makes it look like it is just beautiful and clean and easy and sourdough kneading all the time. We rarely, if ever, see the men or the other caregivers who are helping #TradWives because it doesn't look as alpha to have help. When we don't see caregiving we can't normalize it in society and it chips away at our efforts to fight for affordable childcare.#TradWife content also often glorifies and prettifies rural living. A lot of these homesteading skills that are glorified on #TradWife accounts are actually rooted in people who were in poverty, who were doing these things not because they thought it would look nice on social media, but out of necessity.AND FINALLY, #TradWife content is breathing new life into the mommy wars by pitting women against one another. So much to dive into in this episode.Read Kathryn's CUT columns here.Subscribe to our substack OVER THE INFLUENCE here.

The last of three episodes in our cluster on Louise Glück: one of her oldest and dearest friends, the marvelous poet Ellen Bryant Voigt joins the podcast to talk about Louise's poem "Brooding Likeness." Ellen's books of poetry have recently been assembled into a staggering single volume, Collected Poems (Norton, 2023). She is also the author of two books of prose: The Flexible Lyric (Georgia, 1999) and The Art of Syntax (Graywolf, 2009).A couple notes on things that come up in the episode:Ellen discusses Louise's autobiographical note for the Nobel Prize. You can find that autobiographical piece here.We listen, during the episode, to a recording of Louise reading "Brooding Likeness." The recording contains an alternate phrase in its penultimate line, and during the episode Ellen and I surmise that it was an earlier version of the poem than the one that appeared in The Triumph of Achilles. I've since been able to confirm that. The poem first appeared (with the penultimate line as she reads it here) in The New Yorker on April 12, 1981. The reading we listen to happened on October 22, 1981. The book version, with the version of the line we both prefer, wouldn't be published until 1985.I hope these three episodes on Glück will add something to the beautiful array of memories that have appeared in writing since her passing. I think the guests speak to each other, even as I talk to them one on one, and they do so through their mutual devotion to the poetry of their friend. Please share, rate, and review the podcast if you like what you hear. From the colonial through the antebellum era, enslaved women in the US used lethal force as the ultimate form of resistance. By amplifying their voices and experiences, Brooding over Bloody Revenge: Enslaved Women's Lethal Resistance (Cambridge UP, 2023) strongly challenges assumptions that enslaved women only participated in covert, non-violent forms of resistance, when in fact they consistently seized justice for themselves and organized toward revolt. Nikki M. Taylor expertly reveals how women killed for deeply personal instances of injustice committed by their owners. The stories presented, which span centuries and legal contexts, demonstrate that these acts of lethal force were carefully pre-meditated. Enslaved women planned how and when their enslavers would die, what weapons and accomplices were necessary, and how to evade capture in the aftermath. Original and compelling, Brooding Over Bloody Revenge presents a window into the lives and philosophies of enslaved women who had their own ideas about justice and how to achieve it.
