Lance, JB, and George are joined by Johan Bruyneel to wrap up their 2023 Tour de France coverage by breaking down Jordi Meeus' incredible, and completely unexpected, photo-finish win with a perfect bike throw over Jasper Philipsen and Dylan Groenewegen on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The crew also discuss Tadej Pogačar's repeated attacks in an attempt to win the stage from a breakaway, as well as Jonas Vingegaard cruising in to seal his massive 7+ minute victory over Pogačar and how his Jumbo team executed their pre-Tour plan perfectly for 21 straight stages. They go through what UAE and Pogačar can learn from his Tour, and how Thibaut Pinot and Peter Sagan weren't given any gifts on their final pass of the Champs, before touching on the news that Jumbo will be taking Vingegaard to the Vuelta a España in late August in an attempt to complete a historic grand tour sweep. The stage win witnessed yet another thrilling head-to-head battle among the G.C. leaders, leading to a reshuffling of the top 10 standings. Along the roadside, passionate French tour fans gathered in large numbers, bidding farewell to Tibot Pinot on his final climbing stage in the Tour de France.
Lance, JB, and George break down a fantastic stage win from Tadej Pogačar, who outsprinted Jonas Vingegaard atop the Col du Platzerwasel to cap off an extremely difficult stage 20 that took the riders over multiple categorized climbs of the Vosges mountains. The crew discuss Vingegaard's decision to sprint, Thibaut Pinot's aggressive racing in an attempt to contest the stage win on the last Tour de France mountain stage of his career, and a series of bad crashes along the way involving Sepp Kuss, David Gaudu and Carlos Rodríguez. The Peloton faced another challenging day as an early breakaway proved elusive, causing teams left behind to give chase. In the end, three formidable riders remained, leading to a nail-biting photo finish decided by a toss of the bike.
Lance, JB, and George break down how Matej Mohorič pulled out an extremely narrow victory over Kasper Asgreen with a picture-perfect bike throw following a wild nineteenth stage at the Tour de France. The crew discuss how the win, which came after Mohirič, Ben O'Connor, and Kasper Asgreen ripped off the front of a larger, 30+ rider group, came after 3.5 hours of all-out racing that looked more like a one-day classic than a stage of a grand tour, and continues Bahrain-Victorious' emotional run of success at this race in honor of Gino Mäder. They also touch on how Asgreen's rides have changed Soudal-QuickStep's Tour from disaster to success in just the span of two days. Before signing off, they go through tomorrow's short, but explosive stage, and speculate if it will give Tadej Pogačar a chance to leave this Tour on a positive note via a stage win and if the successive tough climbs will produce a GC shuffling. The tour never fails to deliver surprises, and today was no exception. A courageous 4-man breakaway managed to fend off the peloton until the final moments. JB and Johan also took the opportunity to express their deep admiration for the tour leader, Jonas Vingegaard, particularly in light of his outstanding performance in the last two stages.
Lance, JB, and George break down QuickStep's Kasper Asgreen's incredible win against long odds from the early breakaway, and how the small group stayed away from the peloton to steal a stage from the sprinters on a day when their gap was rarely over a minute inside the final 100 kilometers of racing. They also go through if the sprinter's teams messed up, and how QuickStep has saved their Tour win this win before revisiting Jonas Vingegaard's amazing performance in the time trial and once again discuss if something is up with Tadej Pogačar. Yesterday's extraordinary display of dominance by Jonas Vingegaard has been followed by another awe-inspiring performance today. Once again, we witnessed the impressive climbing skills of the talented young Austrian rider, Felix Gall.
Lance, JB, and George break down Felix Gall's fantastic performance to win the Queen Stage of the 2023 Tour de France with an incredibly fast climb of the brutal Col de la Loze and daredevil descent into Courchevel on stage 17, before discussing Jonas Vingegaard cracking Tadej Pogačar, who lost over five minutes to Vingegaard after bonking early on the climb, to extend his overall lead to 7'35 and all-but ending the fight for the overall win. The crew also discuss how Pogačar's second-straight Tour defeat, and third-straight Tour where he has lost time to Vingegaard in the third week of the race, highlight how his UAE team has sorely missed their former director Allan Peiper, and if there is anyone left who can challenge Jasper Philipsen on the remaining sprint stages. The time trial we witnessed will undoubtedly remain a topic of discussion for a while. Many anticipated a close battle between General Classification leaders Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. Lance, JB, and George break down Jonas Vingegaard's commanding performance to win the crucial stage 16 time trial and significantly extend his overall lead over Tadej Pogačar. The crew discuss how the defending champion rode the perfect race, wonder if Jumbo knew all along that Vingegaard had such a dominant ride waiting against the clock, and debate what Jumbo's strategy will be for the rest of the Tour, before touching on Guilo Ciccone's clever strategy to hold onto the Polka Dot jersey, and the Adam Yates vs Carlos Rodríguez third-place battle. Heading into the Tour's final rest day, Lance, JB, and George are again joined by Spencer Martin, co-host of OŪTCOMES, WEDŪ's cycling betting podcast, and author of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter, to break down the Tour's fifteenth stage, which saw the veteran Wout Poels get an impressive win from the breakaway to give his Bahrain-Victorious team their second stage win of the race, before getting into the still lock-stepped GC battle between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard further down the mountain. The crew also discuss Wout van Aert's strange tactics in the breakaway, how Jumbo's mid-race pileup could affect the third-week GC dynamics, the fight for the podium, and who between Pogačar or Vingegaard has the upper hand going into Tuesday's decisive time trial. Lance, JB, and George are once again joined by Spencer Martin, co-host of OŪTCOMES, WEDŪ's cycling betting podcast, and author of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter, to break down the Tour's fourteenth stage and how Ineos grabbed two stage wins in as many days after Carlos Rodríguez successfully capitalized on Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard's brief stalemate on the brutal Col de Joux Plane climb before unleashing an impressive race-winning attack at the top of the descent and showcasing his technical skills en route to the stage win in Morzine. The crew discuss what Rodríguez's win means for his rumored ongoing contract negotiations with Movistar, the wisdom of Jumbo-Visma setting an incredibly hard line-to-line pace only to gain a single second in the GC standings, as well as how Pogačar attacking Vingegaard, only to be reeled in by an impressive steady-state effort from the defending champion, will affect the physiological side of the ongoing battle for the overall win. To finish the show, Michael Brandt from HVMN comes on to talk about the benefits of their Ketone-IQ product. Today witnessed a monumental battle for the General Classification, not just between the top two contenders, but also leading to a significant reshuffle within the top 10. A remarkable shift in team dynamics unraveled, transitioning from UAE yesterday to Jumbo Visma today. Johan shares his insightful analysis of which leader currently exhibits greater strength and prowess.
Today we saw a mostly unexpected breakaway win from season veteran, Michal Kwiatkowski. Johan also points out that team UAE did a lot of work for little to no gain, while Jumbo-Visma is likely conserving energy for bigger expectations in the Alps.
Lance, JB, and George are joined by Spencer Martin, co-host of OŪTCOMES, WEDŪ's cycling betting podcast, and author of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter, to break down Michał Kwiatkowski's incredible effort to win the stage ahead of the GC group, and what the Tour's thirteenth stage, which took place on Bastille Day and finished up the tough climb of le Grand Colombier, showed us about how the GC picture will shake out in the looming alpine stages. They also discuss how Kwiatkowski has been allowed to re-find his winning ways due to the fall of the Ineos GC empire, and speculate how the teams of UAE and Jumbo will tactically approach tomorrow's brutal mountain stage, which takes the peloton up and over the infamous Col de Joux Plane and down a tricky descent to finish in the alpine town of Morzine.
