Mark and Payton bid adieu to several legends as Carvajal and Alaba play their last game for Real Madrid in a solid, yet meaningless, win over Athletic Club (13:28), and Lewandowski scores on an otherwise awful evening for the championship-hungover Barcelona (26:16). Plus, a teaser of our Season Awards as mark hands out his Flop of the Year, and Payton gives top grade to a surprising veteran.
Host Pete Deeley welcomes instructor Vini Fonseca to The Jiu Jitsu Mindset to discuss how Gracie Jiu-Jitsu shaped Vini's confidence, boundaries, and identity through a gentle, game-based childhood introduction around the Gracie family, including Rickson, Royler, and Helio. Vini explains he began teaching about 10 years ago after studying engineering and running a surf business, then committed fully to preserving Rickson's interpretation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu—fundamentals, "invisible" aspects, and life transformation. They explore teaching as deep personal attention and scanning students' needs, using self-defense to build humility, compassion, and confidence for kids, neurodivergent students, seniors, and even fighters. Vini shares a story of helping an autistic student change socially, reflects on competition as optional, and recounts memorable rolls with Chris Burns, Scott Burr, and Michael Casey. 00:00 Welcome and Sponsor Plug 00:57 Meet Vini Fonseca 01:55 How Jiu Jitsu Shaped Me 05:57 From Engineer to Instructor 07:22 A Gentle Introduction 10:44 Learning Through Observation 16:15 Teaching as Life Mission 19:31 Self Defense for Everyone 22:06 Connection and Care 25:08 Preserving True Jiu Jitsu 26:52 Serving Students With Care 27:42 Self Defense For Seniors 28:20 Roleplay Boundaries Training 29:53 Complete Academy Mission 31:48 Competition For Learners 33:21 Why He Doesn't Compete 36:12 Rolling Stories And Lessons 40:25 First Student Transformation 43:52 Maturity And Teaching Wisdom 47:16 Closing And Future Plans

“Playing for Real Madrid, it's the biggest stage in sports, the pressure is a privilege."- Aurélien Tchouaméni The Pivot goes international! Getting ready for World Cup action, we tapped in with a man who's had success and defeat at the highest level of the sport while juggling all that life brings with it and he sits with us to give an inside-glimpse of what it's like to be apart of the most famous sports franchise in the world! On this episode of The Pivot Podcast, Real Madrid star, Aurélien Tchouaméni opens up like never before about life at the top of world football. The Real Madrid midfielder reflects on what it means to wear one of the heaviest shirts in sports, the constant pressure to perform, and how he's adapting to sky-high expectations both on and off the pitch. Tchouaméni explains the rollercoaster of highs and lows that come with global success and how he navigates the pressures, never allowing himself to feel the brunt of the boos or carried away with the cheers. He shares experiences of how he manages to stay focused on the pitch despite the noise outside team walls. In a deeply personal and emotional moment, Tchouaméni opens up about the racism experienced, specifically the incident with his teammate Vinícius Júnior and how it affected all of them, but says it was Vini's leadership and voice that guided them through the difficult time, kept them playing when many wanted to walk off...and in a moment of truth, Aurelien reveals those inner discussions his teammates had about that what ifs and the honest reality of racism that exists. The star midfielder also speaks candidly about representing the France national team, the pride that comes with it, and the heartbreak of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final—including the emotional weight of missing his penalty kick in one of football's biggest moments. He shares how hard the loss was, being overwhelmed with disappointment but found a way to move forward taking those lessons into every phase of his life, impacting him as a man and the way he approaches the game forever. Tchouaméni dives into current contract talks and what his future could look like in Madrid, while also sharing a more personal side—touching on his relationship, viral moments, maintaining balance, and staying grounded amid global fame. He breaks down the financials of the sport and how it differs from American football, and that most young players start earning thousands to play at ten years old. His excitement for the NFL and studying the history and current players has turned him into an avid fan of American Football, recently spending time with Running Back Bijan Robinson who visited them in Spain as well as exchanged messages with Tom Brady. Looking ahead, Tchouaméni discusses redemption, growth, and his mindset as he prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and what it means to be representing his country. This episode is a raw, insightful conversation about resilience, identity, and what it truly takes to compete at the highest level. A pulsating weekend with goals galore! Join Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) and Román De Arquer (@Aeroslavee) to recap Matchday 29 in LaLiga. We begin in the capital for the Madrid derby. The visitors were looking to do the double over their rivals and took the lead, but Fede Valverde and Vini Jr turned things around to keep the title race alive. Elsewhere, Barcelona were made to work extremely hard to maintain their 100% home record against Rayo, with Joan García again showing why Luis de le Fuente could no longer ignore his stellar form.Villarreal cemented their place in the top four with a comfortable win over Real Sociedad, while Athletic returned to winning ways in their first match since Ernesto Valverde announced he will leave at the end of the season. Betis are five without a win in LaLiga, and the coveted potential fifth Champions League spot is very much up for grabs. In Part Two we delve into the relegation scrap, which is returning to be a dogfight as the weeks go by. Alavés could have folded and capitulated when Celta went 3-0 up on Sunday afternoon, but instead they fought back and produced a magnificent comeback, something not seen in LaLiga since 2005. Four goals and three priceless points.Earlier in the weekend, there were two enormous six-pointers at the bottom. Firstly, Elche ended their accursed winless run with a come-from-behind win over Mallorca, helped by Vedat Muriqi missing the target from the penalty spot in stoppage time. Then, Levante put four past a spirited Oviedo to give themselves more than half a chance of survival. The real losers of the weekend were Sevilla, who were defeated at home again, and look set to sack Matiás Almeyda this week. It can hardly be a surprise for a side who have only won twice since mid-December, but the revolving door to the gaffer's office is not the biggest problem in the intense heat of Seville. We are back in midweek with the international break bonus podcast. We are kicking off another Foreign Film February, or "FFF", which has become a colloquialism at Haus der New World Pictures Podcast. Is that not the case in your home? If it isn't, it's time to start. To kick off the 2026 #FFF, we are talking about 1987's SUBWAY TO THE STARS, a Brazilian drama that, if you looked at the poster, is nowhere close to what you would expect. SUBWAY TO THE STARS explores a talented saxophonist (Vini) who's girlfriend (Nicinha) disappears after they have sex in an automobile junk yard. It should be pointed out, they didn't have sex in one of the cars in the junk yard. They do the nasty on the dirty ground full of oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. Given that, it should come as no surprise that Vini goes on a vision quest to find his missing girlfriend. Unfortunately, because he's a young, attractive musician, he does a pretty shit job of looking for her. Instead, he finds a menagerie of people to do the searching for him. Does he find her? If he does, does she stay with him? We don't cover this part in the episode, but that's part of our charmIn addition to talking about SUBWAY TO THE STARS, we revisit our pre-production of Steamin' (the remake of 1985's Steaming) and whether it could be considered for Cannes. We wonder whether Ska is ready to make a musical comeback. Erica champions the need for more horns (saxophones in particular) in movies and music. Marc makes a claim that there is too much saxophone in George Michael's Careless Whispers. Ryan talks about a great time at a Thom Yorke concert. We also talk about SUBWAY TO THE STARS.
