«Alla fine degli anni 80 dopo lo scandalo del metanolo che ha innescato la prima rivoluzione della qualità del vino italiano, l'Italia produceva circa 70 milioni di ettolitri e il consumo pro capite era superiore a 100 litri l'anno. Oggi produciamo in media 44 milioni di ettolitri, il consumo pro capite è sceso a 33-34 litri ma, intanto, il fatturato del vino italiano è passato dai 2 miliardi di allora agli oltre 16 di oggi. Ridurre produzione e consumi non è necessariamente un male. C'è ancora spazio per valorizzare il prodotto». Il presidente dell'Unione italiana vini Lamberto Frescobaldi, va dritto al punto: il vino italiano deve tagliare la produzione. I consumi mondiali sono strutturalmente in calo. Altri paesi prima di noi come Francia e Spagna (che già producevano meno dell'Italia) sono intervenuti in modo massiccio anche con campagne di estirpazione dei vigneti. Ma, soprattutto, sono due i dati che consigliano una riflessione produttiva: da un lato, le giacenze di vino invenduto hanno superato i 53,4 milioni di ettolitri (compresi i mosti), è come avere una vendemmia di riserva in cantina. E dall'altro, i prezzi dei vini a denominazione d'origine (non quindi quelli del vino sfuso e indifferenziato), a maggio 2026 rispetto a maggio 2025 hanno perso in media il 10%. Bisogna correre ai ripari. «A questo quadro va aggiunto prosegue Frescobaldi che rispetto a 40 anni fa quando a produrre vino erano Italia, Francia e poco altro, adesso c'è la California e l'Oregon negli Usa, la Nuova Zelanda, il Sudafrica, persino la Cina realizza vini gradevoli. Si è allargato, e di molto, il perimetro della competizione e dell'offerta. Ci dobbiamo adeguare. Non possiamo voltarci dall'altra parte».Il presidente Uiv, almeno per il momento, non invoca la rottamazione dei vigneti come avvenuto in Francia ma non nasconde le azioni che possono essere intraprese. «Il punto di partenza continua sono le nuove autorizzazioni all'impianto. Ogni anno si possono piantare nuovi vigneti per un 1% della superficie nazionale. Sono circa 6mila ettari l'anno. Queste autorizzazioni vanno bloccate. Anche temporaneamente ma vanno sospese. Inutile piantare nuove viti se i vini fanno fatica a essere venduti. E poi bisogna incidere sulle rese».
