De Ronde van Vlaanderen 2025 zit erop. Een wereldse editie, met wereldkampioenen Lotte Kopecky en Tadej Pogačar als glorieuze winnaars. Maar er is nog zo veel meer gebeurd. Een zieke Mathieu van der Poel, Lidl-Trek dat leverde en werd beloond met een tweede plaats van Mads Pedersen én het ijzersterke optreden van Visma | Lease a Bike en Wout van Aert. Met nog tactische twijfels bij de vrouwen, die eigenlijk logisch te verklaren zijn. In de WielerFlits Podcast blikken we uitgebreid terug op Vlaanderens Mooiste!Mathieu van der Poel was de absolute topfavoriet bij de mannen, samen met Pogačar. Maar de Nederlander was ziek in aanloop naar De Ronde en zei achteraf dat hem dat misschien wel parten speelde. Al was de uitslag volgens hem dan niet anders geweest. Maar het waren vooral Lidl-Trek en met name Visma | Lease a Bike die lof oogsten. Met hun sterke collectieven wisten ze voor het eerst dit voorjaar weerwerk te bieden tegen de twee beste renners van het moment. De grootste verrassing was misschien wel de revival van Wout van Aert, die een podiumplek had verdiend. Bij de vrouwen was de koers lang gesloten. Dat had mede te maken met het uitvallen van topfavoriete Elisa Longo Borghini, die bij een harde val betrokken was. Net als Lorena Wiebes trouwens, die net als de door materiaalpech achteropgeraakte Marianne Vos nooit meer in het stuk voorkwam. In de finale bleven vier vrouwen over, waaronder Kopecky. Er werd niet meer aangevallen en dat werd door veel wielerfans maar niet begrepen. Toch leggen Kopecky en Pauline Ferrand-Prévot uit wat daarvan de reden was. En dan was er nog Puck Pieterse, die weer kwistig met haar krachten smeet.Kortom: alle redenen om te luisteren naar een fijne nabeschouwing op de Ronde van Vlaanderen 2025 voor mannen en vrouwen!

Hoe kan je zo'n goede koers rijden en toch verliezen? Uitstekende vraag maar dat is nou net de schoonheid van wielrennen. Soms wint de sterkste, soms de sluwste en soms de derde hond in het kegelspel. Dwars door Vlaanderen was een heerlijke koers en voor het eerst dit seizoen zagen we Visma als team een voorjaarsklassieker domineren. Er leek weinig aan de hand. Met drie kleppers richting de finish. Alleen die ene verstekeling moest nog overboord. En laat dat nou net de moeilijkste opgave van de dag zijn geweest. Neilson Powless lost zijn belofte in en wint op miraculeuze wijze van de drie killerbees. Bij Visma is het tranen drogen. Net als bij ons trouwens want Nathan had het liefst een potje zitten janken...

We talk all about it and, I'll tell you what, I honestly think that's the best edition I've ever seen.  Durbo's Pelo Chat takes a look at the ‘Superteams' of the sport - the guys with cash to burn like UAE or Visma who can pick up the best riders; money no object. But are the superteams good or bad for the sport, and is riding for one of them actually all it's cracked up to be? In this month's Talking Tactics, Southam fills us in on the upcoming UCI meeting to discuss whether additional wild cards should be issued for the biggest races. Now that some of the biggest riders, the likes of Pidcock, Hirschi, and Alaphilippe, have stepped down to ProTeam level, race organisers are stuck between a rock and a hard place if they want to keep the classic second division teams happy whilst also getting the fan favourites at their races. Plus, the UCI undermining all the hard work the lower ranked World Tour teams over the last few years to avoid relegation - it's absolute chaos.  Of course, we wrap things up with the Communi-quiz. De omstandigheden waren bar en boos afgelopen week. Zowel in Italië als in Frankrijk. Het woord regenrenner viel vaker dan het peloton lief was. In het peloton zelf werd dan ook weer vaker gevallen dan hen lief was. Grote namen sneuvelden, grote mannen stonden op. In Italië bleek Ayuso de sterkste, waarbij gezegd moet worden dat het parcours weinig onderscheidend was. Jorgensen overleefde de sneeuw van het skistation waar ze zaterdag finishten en wist zondag de chaos te beperken. Visma en UAE lijken in ieder geval klaar voor de grote rondes maar zijn ze dat ook voor de klassiekers? We gaan het zaterdag zien!!

En attendant les deux monstres du Tour de France, ceux qui se partagent depuis 5 saisons les bouquets sur la grande boucle ont entamé la semaine dernière leur duel à distance. L'un sur le Tour de l'UAE qu'il a évidemment remporté ce dimanche sans grande adversité, l'autre sur le Tour d'Algarve qu'il a mis plus de temps à dompter mais où il a fini par s'imposer lui aussi à l'issue du contre la montre. Team Visma–Lease a Bike entered 2024 as the undisputed kings of the male peloton. Their riders had won every Grand Tour in 2023, their star rider Jonas Vingegaard looked was aiming to win his third straight Tour de France, amongst their 72 race victories. Instead, the gods of cycling had different plans. The team suffered misfortune with star riders Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard amongst the team's riders who suffered serious, season altering crashes. That was before factoring in a resurgent Team UAE Emirates led by Tadej Pogacar - who enjoyed one of the greatest seasons ever in pro cycling. En ineens waren ze daar. De een zijn dood, is de ander zijn brood. Alle valpartijen en ellende in de voorjaarsploeg van Visma leidde tot de ontbolstering van deze tweeling, Mick en Tim van Dijke. Ze mochten starten en zelfs voor hun eigen kans gaan in hun absolute lievelingskoersen. De Ronde en Roubaix. En dat deden ze niet onverdienstelijk.
