Become a Supporter of The Real Science of Sport, and for the price of a coffee, or a gel, you get a bonus Applied episode every week, ad-free shows, and the best cycling and running community going over on Discourse.Show notesThis week we recap Tadej Pogačar's record-breaking Tour de France, and then get into the meat of it: why anti-doping leans so heavily on investigation and targeted testing, with insights from our interview with Brett Clothier, head of athletics' Athletics Integrity Unit.(02:24) Tadej Pogačar wins a fifth Tour de France in what Ross reckons is the most dominant display he has seen in any sport, and we dig into the numbers behind it, including an estimated 7 W/kg on Alpe d'Huez that obliterates Pantani's old mark, why the yellow jersey was effectively settled by stage six, and why the racing everywhere else still made it a decent watch.(13:55) The weight-loss double standard. Remco Evenepoel reportedly dropped around nine pounds for the Tour with barely a murmur, while Pauline Ferrand-Prévot's weight loss dominated the coverage last year. We ask why the reaction differs by sex, and where the line sits between periodised, medically supervised leanness and a genuine eating-disorder risk.(19:42) That Montmartre finale, with Van der Poel and Pogačar breaking clear on the last climb, van der Poel's heroic's to hold off the chasing pack, and Jasper Philipsen's remarkable judgement to "win" by not winning against his team-mate. Plus, we ponder whether the GC should really be neutralised so early on the final day? We say let them race.(32:37) The headline this week: why testing alone rarely catches the big fish, and why investigation and targeted testing do. Prompted by the furore over 2am and 5am testing at the Tour, we hear from Brett Clothier of the Athletics Integrity Unit, and explain the biological passport, the micro-dosing of EPO, fast-clearance methods, gene-doping fears, and why a genuinely "transparent" statement about a target test is close to impossible without prejudicing everyone involved.(46:26) A look ahead to the women's Tour de France, the contenders including Vollering, Blasi, Niewiadoma, Ferrand-Prévot and Reusser. With storylines galore, it features the return of a time trial, and French TV figures showing the women's race is closer to the men's than you might expect.(51:48) Are the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow still worth watching without the stars? Gareth is won over by the weightlifting, and we ask whether you really need the very best in the world to enjoy sport.(58:49) The Ultimate Championship, athletics' new 10 million dollar, three-night, TV-first format, complete with a black infield, real-time win probabilities, Mondo Duplantis on stadium DJ duty, and no country quotas. We react, and Ross pitches what he would add to the broadcast(64:16) Josh Kerr reveals how the pacing lights were slowed over the final 100 metres of his mile record to create the illusion he was beating them. Clever theatre, or are we being deceived?(67:00) And finally, Discourse member Ana sets off on a 15,000km "big lap" of Australia on her gravel bike. We wish her luck, and start plotting the data she should share with our listener community!LinksThis is the ITA statement during the Tour - it's really all they can say and expecting more is a day dream! The article on gene doping - speculative and sounds like sci-fi, but might it be happeningThe paper on micro-dosing and detection challengesPlugge on how the tests brought doping back to cyclingPreview of the TDF for WomenDetails on the World Athletics Ultimate Championships Hosted on Acast. The Art and Science of Perfect Pacing (Members' Exclusive Show, Now Unlocked for All)

The Real Science of Sport Podcast

Quick heads up before we start: this is not a brand new episode. If you are one of our Members you will have heard it in full about six weeks ago, when we released it as a Members' only Applied show. But we thought it was too interesting and relevant to stay behind the paywall, so we have cut it down into this shorter version and opened it up to everyone, partly because we want sports science to reach as many people as possible, and partly because it is a taste of exactly what supporters get every week, ad free, alongside our Discourse community! So join now and get it early, ad-free and with post-pod chats! The show was sparked by Gareth's admission that he paces his Zwift time trials by "trying not to die", which, as Ross points out, is already a sign the pacing has gone wrong. Pacing is not about reacting to fatigue once it arrives, but about managing effort now based on its future consequences. Using the analogy of a budget, we look at the two things it defends against, depletion of fuel like carbohydrate and creatine phosphate, and accumulation of heat, hydrogen ions, and other metabolites, and why good pacing is a skill that has to be learned. From there we get applied. Why has elite pacing become flatter over the generations, why can you never bank time in a long event when the 400 and 800 metres break that rule, and how should you actually pace a hilly time trial? Drawing on Remco Evenepoel's world title ride, we anchor everything to FTP, unpack the concept of W', your anaerobic battery, and show why the extra effort you should spend climbing or into a headwind is far smaller than instinct suggests.Whether you are chasing a marathon PB, a Zwift time trial, or simply trying not to blow up halfway, there are practical lessons here to get you to the finish faster. And if you enjoy it, this is only half of the full discussion. The complete version, plus a new Applied show every week, is waiting for you in the supporters club.LinksRoss' PhD was on the anticipatory regulation of performance. That is, pacing. This is the main summary article that came out of that PhD and related workThe physiological regulation of pacing strategy for performance. Another review article from Ross' PhD workThe Hazard Score, and how RPE interacts with distance remaining to regulate pace, as discussed on the podcastThe paper that analyses world records and shows the surprising finding that performances have been unlocked with faster starts and smaller endspurtsEntropy and positive pacing in the 800m. Nice accurate conclusion, the rest, we aren't so sure we understand! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Richard Carapaz produced a stunning ride to win the Tour de France's ultimate queen stage on Alpe d'Huez, completing a brilliant final week by taking his second victory of the race and sealing the polka-dot jersey. But the Ecuadorian's triumph came after a dramatic finale, with Sepp Kuss looking destined for a famous stage win before crashing twice on the descent into the finish and seeing his hopes disappear. We break down a brutal day in the Alps, from the huge 5,600 metres of climbing to the battle for the breakaway, as Kuss, Carapaz, Jai Hindley and others fought for the stage victory on the final climbs. After Kuss' heartbreak, Carapaz seized the opportunity and powered clear to claim a memorable win on one of the Tour's most iconic climbs. Mads Pedersen once again showed his trademark panache, fighting his way into the breakaway and securing the points needed to all but seal the green jersey. The Dane's willingness to attack even on the toughest mountain stages underlined one of the most impressive points-classification rides in recent Tour history. Behind, Tadej Pogačar swapped his usual attacking role for that of super-domestique, setting the pace on the Galibier and the final climbs to protect UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Isaac Del Toro's third place on GC. The yellow jersey sacrificed his own ambitions of another stage win to help his teammate, creating one of the most fascinating moments of the race. We also discuss Paul Seixas' superb ride to defend fourth place overall, the French teenager continuing to announce himself as one of cycling's brightest future stars, while Remco Evenepoel launched a late move in search of victory and strengthened his grip on second place. Stage 19 of the 2026 Tour de France delivered one of the greatest spectacles in modern cycling. A 127.9km mountain stage from Gap to Alpe d'Huez, with 3,500 metres of climbing, always promised fireworks, but what unfolded on the Tour's most iconic climb exceeded every expectation. Richard Carapaz, Lenny Martinez and Sepp Kuss looked set to fight for the stage after an elite breakaway survived deep into the final ascent. But behind them, Tadej Pogačar had other ideas. Launching a devastating attack from the GC group, he rode alone up Alpe d'Huez, hunting down the breakaway one rider at a time before attacking again inside the final kilometre to claim one of the most memorable victories of his career. He didn't just win on cycling's most famous climb, he set the fastest ever ascent of Alpe d'Huez. It was a performance that felt almost impossible to comprehend. Was this the greatest ride of Pogačar's career? Is it one of the finest individual performances the Tour de France has ever witnessed? We break down every moment of an unforgettable afternoon in the Alps. We also discuss Carapaz's remarkable back-to-back mountain raids, Lenny Martinez's outstanding ride into second place, Remco Evenepoel strengthening his grip on second overall, and how the battles for the podium and polka-dot jersey have been transformed heading into the final weekend. Stage 18 of the 2026 Tour de France was another huge day in the Alps, taking the riders 185.2km from Voiron to Orcières-Merlette with 3,900 metres of climbing. On paper, it looked like another day for the GC contenders—but instead, the breakaway finally had its moment. A world-class group fought all day for the stage, with Richard Carapaz, Matteo Jorgenson, Mauro Schmid, Valentin Paret-Peintre and Tobias Halland Johannessen all sensing a rare opportunity. When the attacks finally came on the final climb, it was Carapaz who made the decisive move, riding clear on the slopes to claim EF Education-EasyPost's first stage victory of the Tour after weeks of relentless attacking. Behind, the general classification battle never truly ignited, despite Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe setting a hard tempo on the final climb. Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas all crossed the line together, meaning the fight for yellow—and the battle for the remaining podium places—remains delicately poised heading into the Tour's decisive mountain stages. However, there were signs that UAE Team Emirates-XRG may not be quite as invincible as they have looked. Brendan McNulty abandoned the race through illness, Adam Yates was dropped long before the finale, and for the first time in the high mountains, Pogačar looked noticeably lighter on support. Is that simply the cost of three demanding weeks, or is there finally an opportunity for his rivals to exploit? Elsewhere, Mads Pedersen strengthened his grip on the green jersey by comfortably taking maximum points at the intermediate sprint, putting himself back in control of the points classification after Jasper Philipsen's victory the previous day. Send us Fan MailOne brutal truth defines the Tour de France time trial: you can do everything right and still lose time. We pick apart Stage 16's individual time trial where Remco Evenepoel rips the course at blistering speed, grabs the stage win, and claws back 28 seconds on Tadej Pogacar. It's a big moment for Remco's confidence and a clear reminder that against the clock, he's one of the most dangerous riders in the world. But the yellow jersey story stays complicated. Pogacar limits the damage and carries a commanding GC lead of 4 minutes and 32 seconds into the next day, which forces a real question: is the Tour still open, or does it take chaos to crack that margin? We talk through what that gap means tactically, how two straight wins can shift a team's mindset, and why momentum matters even when the standings barely move. Then the episode takes a darker turn with a reported road rage incident involving Brandon McNulty on the way to the start, plus the emotional gut punch of Florian Lipowitz crashing near the finish and abandoning the race. We keep it grounded in what's known while also speaking plainly about cyclist safety and how moments like these can rattle a squad. We wrap by nerding out on time trial gear and marginal gains and then look ahead to Stage 17: mostly flat, likely controlled by sprinter teams, but still full of breakaway intrigue. Stage 16 of the 2026 Tour de France brought the race's only individual time trial: 26.1km from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains, featuring a punchy parcours with 500 metres of climbing that suited the all-rounders far more than the pure specialists. Remco Evenepoel reminded everyone why he is one of the greatest time triallists of his generation, storming to victory on Belgium's National Day to claim his 26th career TT win. Tadej Pogačar limited his losses superbly to finish second, while Mattias Skjelmose produced an excellent ride for third. Paul Seixas continued his remarkable Tour with fourth, narrowly ahead of Isaac Del Toro as the battle for the white jersey edged even closer. The overall classification remains largely unchanged. Pogačar still holds a commanding lead, while Evenepoel strengthened his grip on second place, with Jonas Vingegaard now out of the race after the crash on Stage 15. Behind them, however, the fight for the final podium position between Del Toro and Seixas is becoming one of the defining battles of this Tour. The biggest moment of the day came when Florian Lipowitz crashed heavily midway through his ride, forcing him to abandon the race. His exit reshapes the top 10, promotes a host of riders up the standings, and opens the door for Yannis Voisard to move into the overall top 10. We also discuss why this wasn't a course designed for pure time trial specialists. Filippo Ganna and Josh Tarling delivered the performances many expected, but on a climbing-heavy route, they were never likely to challenge for victory against riders like Evenepoel and Pogačar. And we caught up with Pete Kennaugh at the XDS-Astana team hotel on the rest day to hear his thoughts on how the race has unfolded so far, and we tackle the burning question: Was Jonas Vingegaard's crash a result of the doping test that woke him up in the middle of the night? Ned Boulting and David Millar break down Stage 16 of the Tour de France 2026.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP What a week of racing at the Tour de France! It's safe to say that with Jonas Vingegaard's unfortunate abandonment, the race for the podium has been blown wide open! I gave EF Education EasyPost DS, Tom Southam, a call to go over everything we've seen in the second week of the Tour and preview what's coming up.  Kicking off with a recap of everything that's gone down both in and around the race last week, and it started with a dominant victory from Pogačar in Le Lioran. Some amazing instincts from Søren Wærenskjold saw him win the bunch sprint on stage 11 to continue Uno-X Mobility's success, before Tim Merlier reminded everyone that he's the fastest sprinter in the race with his third stage win of the Tour the next day.  Stage 13 saw Mauro Schmid power his way into the mega break and grab a stage win for Jayco, so who better to chat to than his team mate, and regular “guest” on the Pod, Durbo. It was great to hear from Luke as he enjoys a well-earned rest day, and he gave us a great scoop on the team's tactics and how their game plan played out pretty much perfectly.  The two mountain stages on the weekend weren't the only drama - a 2 am dope test for Jonas and Pogi had the media buzzing, so I had to ask Southam what he knows and what he's heard from the ground. Is it a bit of a flex from WADA, or is there something going on?!  With Jonas' abandonment, and a mountain TT coming up, can Remco Evenepoel bag another stage win and close the gap to Pogi? Will Del Toro finish on the final podium? What about the green jersey battle between Pedersen and Philipsen? There's still so much to come, and I can't bloody wait to see how it plays out. Guys, it's a rest day, so pull another shot of espresso, sit back, and join me and Southam - dialling in live from EF's rest day Chateau - for some Tour de France chat.  Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! We walk through a mountain day that feels unreal on speed alone, then gets even more intense with a major shake-up in the overall standings. Remco Evenepoel lands a huge stage victory on a brutal summit finish, and suddenly the race feels less predictable than it did 24 hours earlier. We also wrestle with the hardest part of pro cycling to watch: Jonas Vingegaard goes down, suffers a fractured clavicle, and has to abandon. From there we unpack the tactical questions that stick in your brain as a fan. Why was his team driving the pace for kilometers? What was the plan supposed to be, and how does a single mistake on a corner change what “second place” even means going forward? Then we pivot to two controversies that spark real debate among cycling fans. First: overnight anti-doping controls, including wake-ups at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. We support clean racing, but we ask whether the timing is fair before the hardest stages in the sport. Second: Tom Pidcock's penalty for illegal assistance, what the UCI rule actually says, and how a 20-second time hit and other sanctions can ripple through a rider's goals. We close by looking ahead to the rest day and the stage 16 individual time trial, then shift gears to RAGBRAI updates where heat, crowded roads, and emergency vehicles make one thing crystal clear: communication saves people. Jonas Vingegaard is OUT of the Tour de France | Stage 15 Breakdown

Stage 15 of the 2026 Tour de France was another huge day in the mountains, taking the riders 183.9km from Champagnole to Plateau de Solaison with 3,950 metres of climbing. A blockbuster route produced another elite breakaway featuring Ben Healy, Tom Pidcock, Quinn Simmons, Richard Carapaz and, unusually, Adam Yates, who was sent up the road as a satellite rider for Isaac Del Toro. But none of that would become the biggest story of the day. Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the Tour de France, bringing an abrupt end to one of cycling's greatest rivalries. His withdrawal transforms the fight for the podium, but it also raises fascinating questions about Tadej Pogačar. With his biggest rival no longer in the race, did Pogačar choonot to launch the kind of devastating attack many were expecting? Is that the greatest mark of respect he can give? And could this have been the final Tour de France of one of the defining riders of his generation? Despite the strength of the breakaway, UAE once again brought the race back together. With Del Toro and Pogačar driving the chase, the yellow jersey even sacrificed his own chances to try and deliver a stage victory for his teammate. In the end, it wasn't enough. Remco Evenepoel outsprinted Del Toro and Pogačar to take the stage, leaving us asking another question: have we ever seen the rider in yellow work so selflessly to try and win a stage for a teammate? Elsewhere, Jasper Philipsen reignited the battle for the green jersey by taking maximum points at the intermediate sprint, meaning the battle for green could go all the way. Bed Boulting and David Millar break down Stage 15 of the Tour de France.

Stage 14 of the 2026 Tour de France was the kind of day that felt decided before the racing had even begun. A brutal mountain stage from Mulhouse to Le Markstein Fellering, covering 155.3km with 3,800 metres of climbing, was always going to be a major test for the GC contenders. Before the stage, Tadej Pogačar was asked how UAE Team Emirates would approach the day. His answer was simple: "the guys know what to do." It was a quote that carried a sense of inevitability, a reminder that everyone knew what was coming, and there's nothing they can do about it. Chapeau to Tobias Halland Johannessen and Richard Carapaz for making it as far as they could up the final climb, the Col du Haag, but they got swept up by the GC big hitters in the end. But when the decisive moments arrived, Pogačar once again showed why he is the dominant force of this Tour. When he made his move, nobody could follow, and he rode to his 25th Tour de France stage victory and his fourth win of the 2026 race. Behind him, the battle for the podium is becoming one of the most exciting stories of the Tour. Jonas Vingegaard, Paul Seixas, Remco Evenepoel, Florian Lipowitz, Juan Ayuso and Isaac Del Toro are separated by small margins, and second place is looking far less secure than it did earlier in the race. We also ask what is happening at Netcompany-INEOS. Stage 10 of the 2026 Tour de France marked the race's return from the first rest day with a 166.6km mountain stage from Aurillac to Le Lioran on Bastille Day. Featuring nearly 3,800 metres of climbing through the Massif Central, it was always expected to test the general classification contenders and once again, Tadej Pogačar delivered exactly what everyone had been anticipating. When Pogačar attacked on the Col de Pertus, what unfolded was a narrative that we've all seen before, many times. Nobody could follow, and Pogačar swallowed up Richard Carapaz, who lead the race, with no problem at all.
