Be inspired to book your place by watching two videos released by the RSGB from its 2024 Convention, which provide comprehensive updates on EMC and EMF. The first video is a presentation from members of the RSGB Electromagnetic Compatibility Committee. EMC Chair Dr John Rogers, M0JAV, together with Peter Zollman, G4DSE and Ian White, GM3SEK, summarise reports to the EMC helpdesk and highlight two of the most commonly raised topics. This includes advice on how to find and minimise the impact of the sources of RFI. In the second video, RSGB General Manager Steve Thomas, M1ACB, interviews the trio as they explain how the work they have been doing has helped not only RSGB members but the wider amateur radio community. They also explain how their work has supported the new power levels in the latest licence conditions. Last week was good from a geomagnetic disturbance point of view. Up until Wednesday the 25th, the Kp index had not been higher than 3.67 and had mostly been in the ones and twos. This helped HF propagation to a great extent. Sunspots have been present with the solar flux index sitting at 120 on Wednesday, the 25th. A look at the visible disk at solarham.com shows five sunspot groups facing Earth. None are ground-breaking, but they are at least helping to keep the solar flux index relatively high. Daytime F2 MUFs over a 3,000km path have been reaching 18MHz and even 21MHz at times, with 14MHz being more reliable. Sporadic-E continues to make 28MHz a useful band for short-skip, with much of Europe being workable mid-morning on the 25th, at least using FT8. Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Finland were all easily worked on FT8, but nothing was heard on the usual 10m CW and SSB frequencies. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will be in the 140 to 150 range. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for the 1st to the 3rd of July, when the Kp index could reach 4. And conditions may become unsettled again on the 6th and 7th, again with a predicted Kp index of 4. But in the meantime, make the most of the Sporadic-E on the 10m band, as it won't last forever! And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The more traditional summer weather, with patchy rain and showers, is likely to continue for a bit longer. The more persistent rain is likely in the north, closer to low pressure near Iceland, whereas the rain may be more intermittent in southern areas, closer to high pressure over France. This probably rules out any significant Tropo in northern Britain over the coming week but does allow for the occasional enhancement in the southern half of the country. Most areas will have some rain scatter opportunities for the GHz band operators, although perhaps fewer in the south than in the north. The solar conditions have quietened down a little in terms of aurora recently but as we said last week, don't forget to look north in the twilight sky for signs of the pale noctilucent cloud. This is a high-summer phenomenon. See if you can detect any wave patterns, like ripples on a sandy beach, in the cloud. The month of June tends to be quite good for meteor input, and the last of the set, the June Bootids, peaked on Friday the 27th. So, there should be some good chances for hearing the odd ping or two or even seeing one in the evening sky after dusk. The primary mode of interest is still Sporadic-E, which is in full swing and doubtless being topped up by the Bootids meteors, which produce the main ingredient of Sporadic-E propagation – long-lived ions as they ablate, or burn up, upon entering the atmosphere. In terms of the usual search for the placement of Sporadic-E events geographically, the main jet stream interest is likely to be across the northern part of Europe for the coming week. This suggests trying paths to Scandinavia and the Baltic states, whereas for triggers due to upper air ridge patterns, use the more southern routes. The Moon has passed perigee for this month, so path losses are rising. Moon declination is still high, not going negative until Tuesday, the 1st of July. 144MHz sky noise is low, increasing to moderate by next weekend. And that's all from the propagation team this week.
This week, Natalie Louie Guisuraga shares the story of her Wedding Pavilion ceremony and Italy Isola reception. By holding their reception outdoors in EPCOT, Natalie and Noah were able to incorporate fireworks into their wedding without paying for a separate dessert party. In today's episode you'll hear how they added extra time at the start of their reception so they could have daylight for photos and then used a Frozen ride mix-in to kill time until amplified entertainment and their character appearance—featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy—were allowed to begin. Allegra Goodman tells the surprising origin story of Isola—from a children's book discovery to immersive museum research—all written in complete secrecy. In today's Book Gang episode, celebrated author Allegra Goodman joins me to discuss her stunning survival novel Isola, the incredible true story that inspired it, and the highly unusual creative process behind her most critically acclaimed book yet.Allegra kept Isola a secret—entirely—from her agent, her family, and even close friends while she wrote it. She reveals why this story demanded privacy and how keeping it under wraps gave her a rare creative clarity. She also shares what it meant to research this historical setting in museums and archives and how a serendipitous find in a children's book 22 years ago sparked the idea that would grow into Isola. In this inspiring conversation, Allegra and I discuss:Why she kept Isola a secret from everyone—even her agent and family—throughout the writing process. We explore what drove this decision, how it freed her creatively, and what it felt like to reveal the project once it was complete. The immersive research behind the novel, including museum visits and the spark of inspiration that came from a children's book during a late-night feeding session. Allegra traces the story's origin back 22 years, when she stumbled on a brief mention of a marooned noblewoman that she couldn't shake. What it's really like to be selected for both Reese's Book Club and Read With Jenna.
Sal Licata and NBA guest Frank Isola discussed the New York Knicks' controversial decision to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau, with Isola contending it was an emotional move by owner James Dolan, disregarding Thibodeau's recent success in leading the team to the conference finals. They debated the player-coach dynamic, the role of Jalen Brunson's father as an assistant, and potential coaching replacements like Jeff Van Gundy and Jason Kidd, while Isola cautioned against hiring inexperienced candidates given the Knicks' elevated expectations. Isola also defended the players' post-loss partying, emphasizing the end of a long season and the difference in media scrutiny compared to past eras.
Allegra Goodman, author of ISOLA joins us on the front porch. Allegra is the author of seven novels. ISOLA was a Reese's Book Club selection. Her novel SAM was a Read With Jenna Book Club selection. KAATERSKILL FALLS was a National Book Award finalist. THE CHALK ARTIST was winner of the Massachusetts Book Award. Her other books include INTUITION, THE COOKBOOK COLLECTOR, and PARADISE PARK. Allegra tells us about the 20-year gestation period for writing ISOLA, the "inspired by a fragmentary true story" novel about Marguerite, an orphaned noble in Renaissance France. We were fascinated to hear about Allegra's exploration of the danger of being a girl and how she wove that into Marguerite's story. We also talked about the realistic portrayal of Marguerite's faith journey. Allegra tells us she enjoys writing about belief and doubt and that was a key part of Marguerite's story. If you've ever wondered about the creative and research process of writing a novel, you'll enjoy this episode. We also have some hearty laughs!

ISOLA, a brand-new novel by Allegra Goodman, takes us to Renaissance France and into the life of Marguerite, a child heir to a fortune. Unfortunately for Marguerite, her deceased parents' choice for her guardian means her life does not unfold as one of prosperity and gentility. Instead, her guardian fritters away her wealth on his desire to settle New France (i.e., Canada). Marguerite is caught up in his ambitious plans and when she objects, she is left to die on a deserted Canadian island with her nanny and a man who loves her. Aside from the beautiful writing, the most amazing thing about this story, perhaps, is it was inspired by a true story. ISOLA was a Reese's Book Club Pick, a national best-seller, and was also recommended by a friend of Nancy's. It's a good one!

In this final installment of my talk with Allegra Goodman, author of the newly released novel, “Isola,” a historical novel about a young French woman purposefully marooned on an island off the coast of Quebec inspired by true 16th century events, we find out what's currently brewing for Allegra and what she knows at this moment about where her personal through line is leading her next, as well as what kinds of things she's been reading, watching, and listening to lately. We talked about: - The nonfiction book she currently stayed up too late reading - An amazing story about how her mother stood up for herself in the 1970s–and how that example inspires Allegra to this day - A sneak peek at her next book, which is currently in the copy editing phase - Her dreams for her work in the next ten years (super inspiring!) - The historical novel she carried around with her so she could read whenever she had a few quiet minutes - The very specific snack that keeps her going - The Maggie Rogers song that she feels captures the essence of Isola Connect with Allegra on Instagram @allegragoodmanwriter. Welcome to part two of my interview with Allegra Goodman, author of the recent Reese's Book Club selection, “Isola” as well as “Sam,” “The Chalk Artist,” “Intuition,” “The Cookbook Collector,” “Paradise Park,” and “Katterskill Falls.” Today, I'm talking with Allegra about what I call inner stuff, the thoughts, ideas, and beliefs that influence your work, even if you're not fully conscious of it. - How she thinks of being a writer like being a performer “in the theater of a reader's imagination” - Why starting a new project is the hardest part–and how she gets herself through it - How she trusts her inner critic to offer constructive criticism - The one part of the writing process that really makes her nervous - How she got past being pigeon-holed as a writer of a certain genre and built a career on writing many different types of stories - Making the shift from being intimidated by studying the great works of literature to being inspired by them - Why now is the best time of her career - How living to be older than her mother was when she died influences Allegra's work and her life - How it's OK to have multiple different voices as a writer Connect with Allegra on Instagram @allegragoodmanwriter. This week I'm thrilled to be talking with Allegra Goodman, author of numerous novels including her newest, “Isola,” which was a Reese's book club selection, and her first, “Katterskill Falls,” which was a National Book Award finalist. Allegra also wrote two story collections, “The Family Markowitz” and “Total Immersion,” as well as a novel for younger readers, “The Other Side of the Island.” Allegra's fiction has appeared in “The New Yorker” and has been anthologized in “O. Henry Awards” and “Best American Short Stories.” She was raised in Honolulu and now lives with her family in Cambridge, Mass. We covered: - Getting published for the first time as a freshman in college by an encouraging editor who “discovered” her - How it's a love of writing, and not a drive to be published, that will sustain you over the long-term - Learning to build patience and endurance when going from writing short stories to writing novels - Her case for setting very low daily writing goals - Why she doesn't ascribe to the “shitty first draft” school of thought - Her daily and weekly writing routines - How having grown children makes those routines possible - Why she only works on shorter pieces one day per week - The specific times when she'll listen to a podcast—and when she'll choose to keep her ears podcast-free - The nightly ritual that helps her get started on work the next day - How non-digital activities feed her creative process - The benefits and mechanics of writing two books at the same time Connect with Allegra on Instagram @allegragoodmanwriter. Novelist Allegra Goodman found the name of a marooned French noblewoman in a history book decades ago when she was vacationing with her family off the coast of Canada. The woman’s name was mentioned in passing and Allegra got curious about her life. Years later, Allegra is out now with the brilliant new novel “Isola” based on the real life of a 16th-century noblewoman Marguerite de la Rocque — and it’s February’s pick for Reese’s Book Club. She joins us to talk about her first foray into historical fiction and the moment when she first heard Marguerite’s voice in her head.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I talked to Alegra Goodman about her novel Isola (The Dial Press, 2025) After Marguerite is orphaned as a young girl, her guardian leaves her alone in her family's enormous home, where servants see to her needs until he hires a mother and daughter to tutor her in the ways of wealthy 16th century lords and ladies. The guardian sells her home and spends her fortune, betting on an expedition to New France (now known as Canada). The guardian insists that she accompany him, only with her old maid. Afraid and lonely, Marguerite befriends her guardian's secretary and falls in love with him, but the guardian learns of it and abandons her, her maid, and his secretary on a deserted island. Marguerite is forced to learn survival skills in this tale based on a true story. Allegra Goodman's novels include Isola (2025), Sam (a Read With Jenna Book Club selection), The Chalk Artist (winner of the Massachusetts Book Award), Intuition, The Cookbook Collector, Paradise Park, and Kaaterskill Falls (a National Book Award finalist). Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and elsewhere and has been anthologized in The O. Henry Awards and Best American Short Stories. She has written two collections of stories, The Family Markowitz and Total Immersion and a novel for younger readers, The Other Side of the Island. Her essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The American Scholar. Raised in Honolulu, Goodman studied English and philosophy at Harvard and received a PhD in English literature from Stanford. She is the recipient of a Whiting Writer's Award, the Salon Award for Fiction, and a fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced study. She lives with her family in Cambridge, Mass. It's our first Book Club episode of the year! As tradition dictates, we're starting 2025 with a nonfiction book, Stolen Focus by Johann Hari. We discuss our overall thoughts on the book, its major themes, how it connects to current events, and our evolving relationships to social media, reading, multitasking, focus, and more! We also ponder if we would go on a 3-month trip without using internet-connected devices. Related to this topic! A listener suggested using the screen time app Opal.
