Part I: The Travel Advisor as Curator00:00:27Erina Pindar, COO of SmartFlyer, argues that the travel advisor's core product is less about access but more so curation and personalization: the construction of high-emotional-impact moments that exist outside the algorithm and cannot be replicated through self-booking.In Part I of this episode, Erina walks through how SmartFlyer conceptualizes experiences designed to generate genuine surprise for HNW clients, why safari travel has seen a measurable resurgence in demand post-pandemic, and what the rise of multi-generational, long-stay itineraries signals about how the most valuable travel clients are beginning to define the category for themselves. This episode was made possible in partnership with SmartFlyer.SmartFlyer works with hotel owners and management companies looking to access a HNW traveler base that sits outside standard distribution channels. She joined the group in 2007 when Courbit acquired the original property in Courchevel, bringing a background in M&A law that shaped her approach to transforming heritage buildings into destination assets.Airelles follows a full ownership model across almost all of its portfolio: Airelles Courchevel, Airelles Val d'Isère, Château de la Messardière and Pan Deï Palais both in Saint-Tropez, La Bastide de Gordes in Provence, and Palladio Venice on the island of Giudecca. The one exception is Le Grand Contrôle, the only hotel inside the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, which Airelles operates under a concession with the French government. It is arguably the most precise expression of what the brand stands for: identifying sites of irreplaceable historic significance and restoring them into experiences that could not exist anywhere else. Across all of it, Airelles has grown without third-party management contracts, maintaining direct operational control and brand integrity at every property. In this episode, Nadine sits down with Anne-Laure Ollagnon to explore what it really takes to build and run an ultra-luxury hotel group rooted in historic properties, emotional storytelling, and a culture of generosity that institutional capital structures are rarely designed to sustain.Interview Highlights:The difference between family office capital and institutional capital in ultra-luxury, and how that impacts the guest experienceHow Airelles won the Palace of Versailles tender against more than fifteen competing hotel groupsThe six-year acquisition and authorization process for Airelles Palladio Venice, and what patience as a development discipline actually costsAirelles' philosophy behind owning and operating distinct hotelsWhat Anne-Laure looks for when evaluating a new asset, and why emotion is the first filter before any underwriting beginsHow a high-end hotel under 50 keys justifies its ADR and operates profitably without relying on volumeAnne-Laure's view on where ultra-luxury is headingLearn more about Airelles hereFollow Airelles on Instagram hereFollow the latest opening in Venice on Instagram: the Airelles PalladioFollow The Stanza on Instagram

In this episode of the Alpine Property Podcast, Steve Thomas explores Courchevel, one of the most iconic ski destinations in the world, set within the vast Les Trois Vallées. As the resort celebrates its 80th anniversary during the 2025 to 2026 season, this episode takes a deeper look at its origins, evolution and why it remains one of the most desirable alpine destinations for visitors and property buyers alike.A Vision Ahead of Its TimeOriginally conceived in 1942 by Laurent Chappis and Maurice Michaud, Courchevel was designed as a purpose built ski resort that would exist in harmony with its surroundings. The vision prioritised low rise architecture, minimal environmental impact and seamless integration between lifts, slopes and accommodation. The now standard concept of ski in ski out living was pioneered here, setting a blueprint that many resorts still follow today.Four Villages, Four ExperiencesCourchevel is made up of four distinct villages, each offering its own atmosphere, lifestyle and property profile:Le Praz (1300): a traditional Savoyard village with cobbled streets, chalets and a strong sense of community. It offers a quieter pace and excellent value while still providing fast lift access to the wider ski areaCourchevel Village (1550): a balanced and family friendly setting with easy slope access and excellent amenities, including Aquamotion, a modern complex with pools, spa and leisure facilitiesMoriond (1650): lively and well connected, popular with international buyers and known for its vibrant atmosphere, accessibility and strong rental demand1850: the jewel in the crown, offering luxury at the highest level with five star hotels, fine dining, designer boutiques and some of the most exclusive ski properties in the AlpsWorld Class SkiingCourchevel delivers exceptional skiing, both locally and across the Trois Vallées:Around 150km of pistes within Courchevel alone85 percent of slopes above 1800m, ensuring reliable snow conditionsA full spectrum of terrain from beginner areas to advanced off piste routesDirect access to the wider Trois Vallées network, offering over 600km of skiingModern lift infrastructure ensures efficient movement across the resort, allowing skiers to maximise their time on the mountain.Beyond the SlopesCourchevel is far more than just a ski destination, offering a rich lifestyle experience year round:Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dog sledding and ice skatingSummer transforms the resort into a hub for hiking, mountain biking, golf and outdoor adventureLuxury shopping in 1850 features brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and PradaA world class dining scene, including Michelin starred restaurants like Le 1947 at Cheval Blanc, alongside traditional Savoyard cuisine across all villagesAccessibilityDespite its alpine setting, Courchevel is highly accessible:Around 2 hours from Geneva and LyonTrain access via Moûtiers, followed by a short transferPrivate arrivals via its renowned altiport, one of the most unique in the worldProperty OpportunitiesCourchevel offers a diverse range of property options, catering to different budgets and objectives:Le Praz: excellent value and authentic alpine living1550 and 1650: strong balance between lifestyle use and rental potential1850: ultra prime real estate with global demand and premium pricingWhether you are seeking a second home, a rental investment or a long term base in the Alps, Courchevel provides flexibility, prestige and long term appeal.Subscribe to our newsletter www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.uk/newsletter-signup/ to learn more! 66. From dream to doorstep: Buying a chalet in St Sorlin

Alpine Property Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2026 26:34

In this episode of the Alpine Property Podcast, Lesley is joined by Adam Day, a client who recently purchased a beautifully renovated chalet in Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, part of the Les Sybelles ski domain in the French Alps.Adam shares the full story behind his journey from long standing family ski holidays to owning a chalet of his own in the mountains. What began as a search for a simple apartment across multiple European countries ultimately led him and his family to a hidden gem in the Maurienne Valley. This is a real, honest account of what it feels like to move from dream to reality. From Family Holidays to Alpine OwnershipHaving spent years skiing in resorts such as Les Gets, Chamonix and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Adam and his wife Nikki reached a new stage of life. With their children now grown and no longer tied to school holidays, the timing finally felt right to invest in a property of their own.Initially searching across France, Italy and Austria, they refined their criteria to focus on:A genuine dual season resortAccessible skiing without extreme terrainStrong summer hiking and outdoor activitiesGood value within budgetA relaxed, authentic alpine atmosphereThat brief ultimately led them to Saint Sorlin.Discovering a Hidden GemLike many buyers, Adam had never heard of Les Sybelles before beginning his search. After spending time skiing in the area and getting to know the village, it became clear that this was not a high profile “see and be seen” resort, but something arguably better: a traditional French village with character, charm and year round appeal. For Adam and his family, that balance of authenticity and practicality was exactly what they were looking for.Apartment Search to Chalet VisionInterestingly, Adam originally set out to buy an apartment. However, during a viewing trip he was introduced to a derelict chalet with potential. What followed was a leap of faith backed by confidence in the developer, the build quality of previous projects and the guidance of the Alpine Property Investments team. The result is a fully renovated chalet designed around family use, comfort and long term enjoyment.Adam talks candidly about:The importance of trusting the right developerThe French legal process and how it compares to the UKDigital signing and how the buying process has evolvedSetting up utilities, taxes and ongoing managementHis experience highlights how smooth the process can be with the right professional support.First Arrivals and First ImpressionsThe first night in the chalet delivered exactly what they had hoped for.A comfortable, beautifully designed home.Dinner out at a local restaurant.A sense of arrival.Since purchase, the property has already been used extensively in both summer and winter, with hiking trips, family stays and ski holidays forming part of their new rhythm.Saint Sorlin offers:Easy access to skiingWalkable village amenitiesFamily friendly infrastructureRelaxed après ski optionsSpace to breatheAnd for this season in particular, exceptional snowfall. Why Saint Sorlin WorksAdam makes an important point. No resort is all things to all people.Saint Sorlin is not ultra glitzy. It is not Courchevel. It is not about high end designer boutiques or Michelin starred dining. It is about:ValueAuthenticityAccessibilityFamily atmosphereDual season livingAnd for many buyers, that combination is exactly what makes it so compelling.Property of the Podcast Brand new 3 – 4 bedroom apartments for sale:https://www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.uk/properties/005057/ Chalet at €1,040,000:https://www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.uk/properties/004977/Subscribe to our newsletter www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.uk/newsletter-signup/ to learn more! In the final instalment of this three part mini series, Steve and Lesley Thomas conclude their in depth discussion on how to choose the right Alpine resort based on lifestyle, budget, investment goals, and long term return.Drawing on over 20 years of experience advising buyers across the French Alps, this episode moves beyond lifestyle preferences and into the practical realities of value for money, capital growth, rental income, and where to invest for the strongest returns.Recorded during one of the busiest ski seasons since Covid, Steve shares current market insight including increased buyer motivation, rising enquiry levels, stronger sales activity, and a noticeable shift in investor behaviour. This episode brings together everything discussed in Parts One and Two, helping listeners align resort choice not just with how they want to live, but with how they want their property to perform.Topics Covered in This EpisodeCurrent market conditions across the French Alps and what is driving buyer demandThe best resorts for spring skiing and late season snow suretyKey altitude, slope orientation, and infrastructure factors for reliable snow conditionsResorts that combine skiing with rock climbing, paragliding, and other outdoor pursuitsWhere to buy if remote working flexibility is importantAlpine resorts with casinos and true thermal spa facilitiesThe top destinations for luxury lifestyles and prime property marketsWhere to buy if headline resorts such as Val d'Isere, Courchevel, Meribel, and Megeve are out of reachSatellite villages and emerging regions offering lower costs per square metreThe Maurienne Valley and Les Sybelles as value driven alternatives with dual season appealFactors influencing long term capital growth including infrastructure investment and limited supplyExtended winter season versus dual season rental strategiesThe realities of rental yield, agency fees, occupancy levels, and value driven demandSteve also explains how buyer behaviour is evolving, with more clients seeking lifestyle acquisitions funded by restructuring existing portfolios, alongside overseas investors diversifying capital into the French Alps. The episode provides practical examples of current price points across both prime and value focused resorts, highlighting how strategy, timing, and location selection can significantly influence both enjoyment and financial return.Investment and Rental ConsiderationsFor listeners focused on return on investment, the discussion explores:Resorts with diminishing development land and limited new build supplyLocations benefiting from confirmed or proposed infrastructure improvementsThe impact of altitude and season length on rental weeksWhy value driven ski domains such as Les Sybelles can outperform expectations on occupancyThe importance of property positioning, views, ski access, and agency fees when calculating net yieldSteve also addresses a common misconception that dual season resorts automatically generate stronger returns, explaining how longer winter seasons in high altitude resorts can balance the equation.Thinking About Buying in the AlpsThis three part series has been designed to help buyers think strategically about resort selection, not simply emotionally. If you are considering purchasing a property in the French or Swiss Alps and would like to explore which resort best suits your lifestyle and investment objectives, visit:www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.ukYou will find a wide selection of properties for sale along with contact details to arrange a consultation or viewing during your next visit to the mountains.Subscribe to our newsletter www.alpinepropertyinvestments.co.uk/newsletter-signup/ to learn more! Learn French by Watching TV with Lingopie: https://learn.lingopie.com/dailyfrenchpodVoici ce qu'il faut retenir de l'incendie qui a frappé l'hôtel de luxe des Grandes Alpes à Courchevel. Here is what to remember about the fire that struck the luxury hotel Les Grandes Alpes in Courchevel.Alors, pour vous donner le contexte, un énorme incendie s'est déclaré mardi soir dans cet hôtel cinq étoiles en plein cœur de la célèbre station de ski.So, to give you some context, a massive fire broke out Tuesday evening in this five-star hotel in the heart of the famous ski resort.Ça a bien sûr déclenché une évacuation massive et une intervention super complexe pour les pompiers. This of course triggered a massive evacuation and a very complex intervention for the firefighters.Premièrement, parlons de la situation humaine et là franchement, c'est la bonne nouvelle de l'histoire.First, let's talk about the human situation and frankly, that is the good news of the story.Le feu a pris au niveau de la toiture. The fire started at the roof level.Très, très vite, les 83 personnes, que ce soit les clients ou le personnel, ont été évacuées.Very, very quickly, the 83 people, whether they were guests or staff, were evacuated.Le plus important, c'est que pour l'instant, il n'y a aucune victime. Ouf !The most important thing is that for now, there are no victims. Phew!Et tout le monde a pu être relogé. And everyone was able to be rehoused.Deuxièmement, l'intervention des secours. Secondly, the emergency services' intervention.Et là, c'est vraiment un casse-tête.And there, it is truly a headache.Imaginez : une soixantaine de pompiers sont mobilisés et ils font face à deux gros problèmes.Imagine: about sixty firefighters are mobilized and they are facing two major problems.D'un côté, la forme du toit est super complexe. On one hand, the shape of the roof is super complex.De l'autre, il y a une épaisse couche de neige dessus ce qui les empêche de faire des ouvertures pour évacuer la fumée.On the other, there is a thick layer of snow on top which prevents them from making openings to vent the smoke.Et finalement, le risque que ça se propage. And finally, the risk that it spreads.Parce que oui, pour l'instant, le feu est confiné au toit mais il y a un risque.Because yes, for now, the fire is confined to the roof, but there is a risk.Le lieutenant-colonel des pompiers de Savoie l'a confirmé : le risque que l'incendie s'étende aux bâtiments juste à côté et bien, il est bien réel.The lieutenant-colonel of the Savoie firefighters confirmed it: the risk of the fire spreading to the buildings right next door is, well, very real.Donc vous l'aurez compris, la situation reste très, très tendue. So as you will have understood, the situation remains very, very tense.En bref, c'est une véritable course contre la montre qui est engagée pour maîtriser cet incendie dangereux dans un lieu emblématique où la priorité absolue a été de mettre tout le monde en sécurité.In short, it is a true race against time that has been undertaken to control this dangerous fire in an iconic location where the absolute priority was to get everyone to safety. “ Beaumier is a story that began truly 10 years ago if we go back to the beginning of the portfolio. But this story of implementing soulful luxury properties and beautiful environments, really rooted in the local culture—it's less than five years old. We're a very young brand, I would say.”We're in great company with Anna Fedou, Brand & Marketing Director of Beaumier Hotels, a curated collection of ten soulful luxury properties woven across Europe's most enchanting landscapes—from Provence and the Riviera to the Alpine peaks and Ibiza. Beaumier is built on a philosophy of "the art of living differently"—a belief that true hospitality begins not with grand gestures, but with listening—to the landscape, to the people who call it home, to the history woven into its walls. Rather than imposing a predetermined style, each property emerges as an act of discovery, honoring its surroundings while breathing new life into them with the spirit of a curious explorer and the care of a devoted steward. In this winter episode, Anna shares how her own multicultural upbringing—shaped by movement between cultures and meaningful family moments—informs Beaumier's approach to creating spaces where guests feel genuinely at home, offering us timely lessons in slowing down, belonging, and the kind of intentional living we all crave as the holidays approach.Top Takeaways[1:50] How Anna's childhood spent traveling between France, Portugal, Spain, and London—punctuated by magical family holidays discovering the world together—became the compass that would eventually guide her career in creating meaningful, connected experiences for others.[6:40] What began as a small collection of Alpine ski hotels transformed into a spirit of adventure named Beaumier—seeking out hidden architectural treasures and breathing new life into them with intention and reverence.[19:40] At Beaumier, guests reconnect with nature and themselves through thoughtfully curated spaces where design, storytelling, and “happy accidents” become conversation starters that spark joy regardless of cultural background. [24:15] Winter Properties: L'Alpaga in Megève, Les 3 Vallées in Courchevel, Le Val Thorens and Le Fitz Roy in Val Thorens—all provide distinctive perspectives and experiences of the French Alps—while the Grand Hotel Belvedere in Wengen is a historic hideaway in the Swiss Alps.[26:00] Summer Properties: Capelongue, Le Moulin and Le Galinier  show different sides of Provence—while Les Roches Rouges sits peacefully overlooking the Côte d'Azur, and Petunia dispels the myth of Ibiza.[30:55] What ties together ten distinct properties across Europe isn't a playbook—it's a commitment to locally sourced cuisine, genuine human connection, and a deeply personal approach to wellbeing that honors what each guest truly needs to feel whole.[35:50] A first glimpse into Wengen's revival through Grand Hotel Belvedere—a revitalized property breathing new life into a sleeping beauty destination that's been beautifully unchanged for decades, inspiring the entire community to awaken alongside it.Visit For YourselfBeaumier Website | @beaumierhotels Bon Voyage by Beaumier

A couple of years ago in Val D'Isere, one group told me that they are all friends because their parents had met doing seasons with BL and they still all ski together now. You and the contributors captured that sense of community so well." There are now 268 episodes of The Ski Podcast to catch up with. The end is near, and the overall win is, barring a Pogi disaster, essentially wrapped up. That doesn't mean that the closing stages of this year's Tour de France have been boring, however, with Milan trucking towards Paris in green and Visma doing their best over the last two mountain stages to force a comeback for the ages. This episode sees Levy and Peter Cossins dig that idiotic fan trying to poach the stage 17 finish on his bike before a security guard knocked him into next week, and why Lenny Martinez (deservedly) lost the polka dot jersey after not one but three of the stickiest bottles. They also get into Ben O'Connor's emotional win on top of Courchevel, and Thymen Arensman's big-brain moves that allowed him to barely beat Vingegaard and Pogacar to the line for his second solo masterpiece of the Tour. Today… we're going skiing! And we're doing it in style in France, Switzerland, Italy, and other European destinations. I wanted to pull together this episode not only because skiing in Europe is an amazing cultural experience, but also because it's looking pretty darn good from a value perspective right now. The Euro and Dollar are currently on par and lift tickets and lessons are massively cheaper in Europe than in the US.  Our guests today are the brother and sister team, Rick Reichsfeld and Richelle Blanken. The duo grew up skiing competitively, both raced in college, and then Richelle even raced in the Olympics. When Richelle left the national team - brother and sister teamed up to find a way to make a living from helping others experience the joy of skiing and the duo are our partners in planning amazing ski trips around the world for Bell & Bly Travel clients.   We discuss everything from Michelin starred mountain food, to unique lifts across Europe, to the most luxurious resorts, spas, and even non-skiing winter activities.  Sit back with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of champagne, and enjoy this episode of Luxury Travel Insider.   Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com   Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn
