El día después del primer día de descanso suele ser un día difícil por que algunos ciclistas no se adaptan bien al cambio brusco de ritmo. Vimos una etapa con muchísimo ritmo y muchos ataques, y varios corredores lo pasaron muy muy mal en la primera mitad de la carrera de hoy, aunque luego se tranquilizó la situación y la gran mayoría fue capaz de reincorporarse en el peloton.  Un grupo de 14 unidades logró mantenerse por delante y disputarse la victoria parcial y ese honor lo tuvo hoy el ciclista del equipo Bahrain Pello Bilbao, quien dedicó esta victoria a su compañero Gino Mäder, tristemente fallecido hace unas semanas en la Vuelta a Suiza. Vingegaard pudo conservar su maillot amarillo sin demasiados problemas.

Il faisait 43 degrés au sol à l'arrivée, au terme d'une bagarre de tous les instants et un coup de chaud sous le casque de pas mal de coureurs. C'est parti dans tous les sens, et à l'arrivée, la victoire de Pello Bilbao, qui a rendu hommage à son coéquipier Gino Mäder, mort sur les routes du Tour de Suisse. "La première heure de course a été complètement folle", rappelle Nicolas Georgereau, journaliste de RTL. Vingegaard et Pogacar se sont ainsi retrouvés dans un groupe de 30 échappés, qui a fait mal à certains cadors très tôt. "On montait dès le départ, et les routes n'étaient pas très larges, donc il y a eu un moment de flottement qui a duré deux heures", raconte le journaliste de RTL Vincent Serrano. Het was dinsdag warm in Issoire. Héél warm. De thermostaten in en rond de perszaal gaven op een gegeven moment 43 graden Celsius aan. Er werd een verhitte strijd verwacht om de vlucht van de dag te halen, waarbij er met argusogen naar Mathieu van der Poel en Wout van Aert werd gekeken. Waar de Nederlander niet fit was, had de Belg de benen niet. Uiteindelijk ging de zege naar Pello Bilbao en dat bezorgde iedereen kippenvel. Dat en meer in een nieuwe WielerFlits Update! De zege van Bahrain Victorious-renner Bilbao maakte het nodige los bij het wielerpubliek. “Dat komt door het overlijden van Gino Mäder, die een maand geleden verongelukte in de Ronde van Zwitserland”, legt Youri uit. “In overleg met zijn familie reikte de Tourorganisatie het rugnummer 61 niet uit; Mäder had normaal gesproken de Tour gereden. De Zwitser reed altijd voor een goed doel. Voor iedere renner die hij per rit achter zich liet, doneerde hij een euro aan dat doel. Na zijn overlijden besloot uitgerekend Bilbao om dat doel voor te zetten. Dat bezorgt mij kippenvel.” De etappe van dinsdag was misschien wel de meest vervelende na een rustdag: op en af, terwijl de zon verzengend heet was. Meerdere renners moesten het hoofd buigen, waaronder Fabio Jakobsen. “Hij zat na afloop in zak en as”, zag Youri vanop de eerste rij. “Hij twijfelde aan alles: of hij wel genoeg getraind had en of hij wel goed genoeg was. Uiteindelijk was hij blij dat Caleb Ewan het ook heel zwaar had. Hopelijk komen ze erdoor, want ze horen op dit niveau thuis.” Meteen woensdag al, want dan verwachten de renners een nieuwe massasprint in Moulins.Daarin zijn alle ogen gericht op Jasper Philipsen. “Alle massasprints die er waren, heeft hij gewonnen”, merkt Maxim op. “Tenzij je Limoges meerekent, dan heeft hij één keer verloren. Maar er zijn toch nog zo veel meer kapers op de kust: Caleb Ewan, Phil Bauhaus, Sam Welsford, Jakobsen en ook Dylan Groenewegen”. Jordi Meeus legt vervolgens uit hoe Philipsen te verslaan is, die het mogelijk zonder Van der Poel moet doen. “Maar eigenlijk was hij in de winter niet de beoogde lead out. Dat was eerst Jonas Rickaert en daarna Ramon Sinkeldam. Zij zijn hier ook.” En verder… Wout van Aert en Arthur van Dongen reageren op het hardnekkige gerucht dat de Belgische kopman van Jumbo-Visma woensdag huiswaarts keert. Daarnaast is er in een reportage ook ruim de aandacht voor de Nederlandse WK-selectie, die eerder op dinsdag bekendgemaakt werd. Youri beeldbelde met bondscoach Koos Moerenhout en vroeg hem naar de redenen om bijvoorbeeld Mike Teunissen en Danny van Poppel níet te selecteren, maar Olav Kooij juist wel. The world of professional cycling was rocked and devastated this week by the death of 26-year-old Bahrain Victorious rider Gino Mäder after a crash in his home race, the Tour de Suisse. Dat hij nu zomaar in één keer uit je leven wordt gerukt, is bizar. Ik kan niet beseffen dat hij er niet meer is, dat het gewoon klaar is.” Dylan van Baarle was er ook twee keer bij om met Mäder en Poels te trainen en leerde de Zwitser een paar maanden voor zijn dood beter kennen. La carrera helvética se recordará para siempre por el triste accidente y fallecimiento del ciclista suiza Gino Mäder, quien desafortunadamente se estrelló en la bajada final de la quinta etapa y dejó la vida en el camino hacia La Punt.  El pelotón entero estaba en shock y las dos etapas siguientes se hicieron neutralizadas en homenaje a su compañero fallecido.  La carrera se decidió finalmente en la última etapa, una contra reloj de 25km, ganado por el joven español Juan Ayuso, por delante de Remco Evenpoel y el vencedor final, el danés Mattias Skjelmose.

Een speciale aflevering van De Kopgroep staat voor je klaar! Afgelopen Vaderdag, zondag 18 juni, fietsten ruim 25 wielrenliefhebbers samen met Joost Vullings, Roxanne Knetemann en Martijn Hendriks Het Kopje van Bloemendaal op. Mart Smeets volgde de renners in de volgauto. Na afloop namen we deze extra editie van De Kopgroep op, met publiek! De leden van De Kopgroep blikken terug op het rondje van 40 kilometer dat ze net hebben afgelegd. Ook hebben we het in deze speciale aflevering over het tragische nieuws uit de Ronde van Zwitserland. Deze ronde gaat nu al de boeken in als gitzwarte editie door de dood van Gino Mäder. Er moet volgens de leden echt wat veranderen omtrent de veiligheid tijdens het koersen, maar de kans is volgens de leden echter klein dat er een verandering gaat plaats vinden. Los vencedores parciales Taco van der Hoorn, Joe Dombrowski, Caleb Ewan y Gino Mäder vivieron un gran momento en su carrera deportiva, mientras Mikel Landa, Pavel Sivakov y de nuevo Dombrowski vieron el otro lado de la medalla.
