Giro success with Carapaz who almost won it and in the Tour de France Tom Pidcock won on Alpe d'huez and Geraint Thomas finished on the podium. But the squad will miss Dylan van Baarle and Richard Carapaz in the 2023 season.
The Cycling Podcast continues its review of the 2022 season by electing our “Comeback of the Year”. Egan Bernal and Milan Vader made miraculous recoveries from injuries that looked career-threatening, Jai Hindley successfully banished the memory of a wretched 2021…but it's Geraint Thomas who takes the laurels thanks mainly to his third place in the Tour de France. Before an extended interview with Thomas, Daniel is joined by Brian Nygaard to review the week's main news stories. We get the latest on B&B Hotels and Mark Cavendish, catch up on track and cyclocross news and also reflect on developments following the tragic death of Davide Rebellin.
“You've got to listen to these young people,” says Rod Ellingworth.“A lot of experienced people have been through life but they're not perhaps listening to these young people enough. You've got to listen to their ambitions and, when they say things, there's a lot in there. And if you ask the right questions, open questions, getting into the guts of it really, really getting under their skin about how they want to go from A to B, I think you can learn a lot from people. “Try to follow people's ambitions and dreams. And as long as you've got the programme and the space, you can keep working with people, because the talent will come through.”Ellingworth is a former cyclist who now oversees talent identification at the Ineos Grenadiers and, in this latest edition of the Science in Sport Industry Insight series, he sits down in conversation with his former colleague James Morton, the Director of Performance Solutions at SiS.Both men spent five year working together under Ineos' previous guise, Team Sky, and here they delve into advice for talent spotters as well as:Why it is important to ‘throw grenades' at young riders when it comes to developing their resilience [14:00];Geraint Thomas' champion mindset [16:00];The importance of creating programmes that excite youngsters [18:30];Misconceptions around fuelling and weight loss [26:30]James Morton LinkedIn | TwitterJohn Portch: Twitter | LinkedInListen above and subscribe today on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.
I've ridden bikes since I was 4 which means I've owned a lot of bikes. I started cycling a bit more seriously when I was 18 and I can honestly say that until I was in my early 50's I rode the bike that I purchased from the shop. I never changed crank lengths, handlebar width, or even the saddle. Apparently, that makes me a macro adjuster, just like Geraint Thomas, although that and the fact that we both ride bikes regularly is where the similarity stops. Cycle training typically occupies 45-50% of a triathlete's weekly programme. The longer your chosen race distance, the more time you need in the saddle so bike fit is a crucial element. Today I'm joined by Phil Burt, a physiotherapist by training. After a long career supporting the world's best at three Olympic Games and seven Tour de Frances, Burt is now concentrating on using his expertise to help cyclists at all levels to improve their health, comfort, and performance. I learned a lot from this call, as I hope you do, including why I should probably have a bike fit after 58 years. I also learned about: 3 pillars of bike fit Why you should have a bike fit before you buy your new bike How a bike fitter can make a difference in performance Why the saddle is the most important part of a TT bike Why shorter crank lengths on your TT bike might lead to a better run Are you a macro adjuster, or a micro adjuster? 3 simple fixes you can make immediately for a better bike fit Strength training for triathletes To find out more about Phil and the services he offers, please visit him at: Website PhilBurtInnovation Facebook - Philburtinnov Twitter @PhilBurtInnov Instagram PhilBurtInnov YouTube Phil Burt Innovation Linked In PhilBurtInnov In this video, Phil explains his new approach to bike fit, performance, and comfort Phil also recommended these books: Start with Why by Simon Sinek Breath by James's Nestor To download your FREE case study on how to excel at your first Ironman, please CLICK HERE Join our SWAT/High Performance Human tribe now, with a happiness guarantee!
Tadej Pogacar (SLO/UAE Emirates) 3 h 25:51. 2. Jonas Vingegaard (DEN) a 0. 3. Brandon McNulty (USA) 32. 4. Geraint Thomas (GBR) 2:07. 5. Alexey Lutsenko (KAZ) 2:34. 6. Romain Bardet (FRA) 2:38. 7. David Gaudu (FRA) 3:27. 8. Aleksander Vlasov (RUS) 3:32. 9. Louis Meintjies (RSA) 3:32. 10. Nairo Quintana (COL) 3:32.

Spencer Martin of Beyond the Peloton & Andrew Vontz of the Choose the Hard Way Podcast take a step back after two impressive stage wins to ask the big questions about this race's GC picture: Does Andrew believe Geraint Thomas has a chance of winning this race more than his Ineos team and did Burning Man peak in the early 2010s? They then give some spicy hot takes regarding Tom Pidcock's and Wout van Aert's standing in their proverbial battles with parallel superstars Remco Evenepoel and Mathieu van der Poel.
Bradley Wiggins and Matt Stephens return to discuss Stage 12 of the Tour de France on the latest episode of the Bradley Wiggins Show. There's praise for Tom Pidcock whose “almost superhuman” performance left Matt on the verge of tears after he became the youngest ever winner on Alpe d'Huez. The 22-year-old became the second British winner – after Geraint Thomas - on the iconic col and Wiggins has tipped the Yorkshireman as a winner of the Tour de France in the future. The 2012 winner thinks that the Tour de France suits him best of all the Grand Tours. There is also praise for the new environment on show at his team Ineos under the guidance of Steve Cummings and Rod Ellingworth. Arguably, though, the story of the day was Chris Froome's return to form with a third-placed finish. Wiggins says it is testament to his resilience and perseverance to return to world-class form following three years of rehabilitation. The Bradley Wiggins Show is edited by Chris Watts.Produced by Pete Burton. Chris Froome is back. Froome finished 3rd in Tour de France stage 12 that finished on Alpe d'Huez. Froome beat multiple high level climbers from the breakaway and proved he still is competitive. Tom Pidcock became the youngest rider ever to win on Alpe d'Huez. Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Enric Mas, Sepp Kuss and Geraint Thomas finished together. They climbed Alpe d'Huez in 39 minutes and 12 seconds, which is the fastest time since 2006.
Spencer Martin of Beyond the Peloton & Andrew Vontz of the Choose the Hard Way Podcast try to understand the action-packed first mountain stage at the Tour de France that has turned the race on its head before drifting off the beaten path to discuss if Pogacar has COVID, what is going on with the climate protests and does Geraint Thomas have a chance to turn back the clock and win this race? "Rice for breakfast is absolutely standard," says James Forsyth, Performance Chef for elite cycling team the INEOS Grenadiers. That's just one of the many, slightly odd, things he has to think about as part of his role. His job is to prepare meals for all members of the cycling team, as they compete at major events such as the Tour de France. So much thought goes into what the athletes eat and it varies depending on what role the individual cyclist has within the team. One thing is for certain, a lot of food needs to be consumed to make sure the riders are fit and ready to compete at the very top level. "It's about the volume of what they eat at each mealtime," James tells Elisa Roche in this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series. "Each meal would probably equate to around six or seven meals." The INEOS Grenadiers, formerly known as Team Sky, are one of the most successful cycling teams of recent years. Geraint Thomas, who won the Tour de France in 2018, currently rides for them, and former team members include Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome. An INEOS Grenadiers rider has won the Tour de France in seven of the last ten years. James says he wasn't sure he had the right qualifications to become one of team's chefs and his career started in a very different setting. He started off as a chef in a country restaurant, before moving on to work in Michelin-starred restaurants in London. Listen to the full episode to find out how he managed to make the move to one of the world's leading sports teams, what it's like working on the road for so much of the year, and why you "sometimes get an evil eye across the table" when dealing with riders with different roles within the team. James also has some top tips for landing yourself a job just like his. James Forsyth, Team Chef, INEOS Grenadiers James Forsyth has been cooking for 15 years. Starting his working career as a butchers assistant and washing dishes at the local pub. He took up a commis position at a catering events company, working side by side with the head chef, here he learnt the fundamentals of cooking. Moving on to a 1AA rosette restaurant with a small kitchen brigade, the mentoring continued from a highly experienced head chef for two years. Needing a greater challenge, he moved to London for 4 years to work at the 2* Michelin The Square and 1* Michelin Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. It was at Dinner where he won the William Heptinstall award after being nominated by his peers. This took him to Sydney to gain experience working in the 3 Hats fusion kitchen of Rockpool. After some time away from the stove exploring east Asia and Oceania he took up a role cooking for professional cyclists at Team Sky, now INEOS Grenadiers. Being in the role of senior chef for 7 years, it has come with much team success. From being a part of six grand tour wins including Chris Froomes' three consecutive grand tour victories to multiple stage and one-day race victories.
It's a rest day at the Tour de France and Brad is joined by Matt and Bernie ahead of Stage 10 on Monday. The gang review the first full week of the Tour, and the first topic of discussion is race leader Tadej Pogacar - who, despite being a two-time winner, Brad believes doesn't fully use the strength and power that having the yellow jersey confers.Brad says the young Slovenian "doesn't realise his status in the sport" and reflects on his own experiences when leading the greatest race in the world in 2012, and the power attached to the famous jersey in terms of dictating the terms of the race.Brad also says Pogacar arguably lacks the road captains to make the difference, recalling the time that Michael Rogers took a decision on his behalf in 2012 to ensure Team Sky abandoned a chase of a breakaway in order to focus on GC, a decision which did not amuse Mark Cavendish...Geraint Thomas is still nicely placed in GC and Bernie says the projected hot temperatures over the next week could favour G, having kept his powder dry thus far. Brad says he's never seen his former team-mate so relaxed. There's discussions on Tom Pidcock, Primoz Roglic and predictions on what is still to come. And the three discuss the moments watching the Tour as a child which made them want to be a professional cyclist. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It was heartbreak for Lennard Kämna on stage 7 as Tadej Pogacar claimed stage honours. Dan catches up with Ben O'Connor and Geraint Thomas before the start and tries unsuccessfully again to hunt down Wout for the kanga award. We also update the Giro Donne with Amanda Spratt out of the race with a Covid positive result.
Brad and Matt are joined by the one and only Bernie Eisel our Stage 4 pod from the Tour de France as the gang reflect on a quite stunning performance from Wout van Aert, who blew the peloton away in yellow for his first stage win at the Tour. There's plenty of discussion about his greatness - but should he be looking to transition into a GC rider, with ambitions of maybe one day even winning a Tour de France?Brad's own experience in doing so reveals some of the sacrifices a rider like Van Aert would need to make to achieve this dream.Plus there's a look ahead to Wednesday's cobbled stage and why it could be a day for Geraint Thomas...The Bradley Wiggins Show is Edited by Chris Watts.Produced by Pete Burton.
