S24E38 - Een tijdrit liegt nooit. De waardeverhoudingen op dit moment in de Tour de France zijn duidelijk. Wereldkampioen tijdrijden Remco Evenepoel pakte zijn felbegeerde ritzege, maar hield Tadej Pogačar maar nipt achter zich. De achterstand van Primož Roglič en Jonas Vingegaard was wel significant, maar gek genoeg kan vrijwel iedereen daar mee leven. Alles daarover in een nieuwe WielerFlits Update! In de sterren stond geschreven dat Evenepoel in deze tijdrit er met de zege vandoor ging. Maar ga er als 24-jarige debutant maar aan staan. De Belg deed het toch en maakt al heel de Tour een rustige indruk, alsof hij al vijf keer de Ronde van Frankrijk achter zich heeft. Hij begint stiekem te hopen dat hij het eindpodium kan halen, maar beseft dat er nog een lange weg te gaan is. Ook bij Visma | Lease a Bike zijn ze opgelucht. Ook dit tijdsverlies was ingecalculeerd en eerlijk gezegd viel het ze zelfs mee. En bij UAE Emirates waren er eveneens blije gezichten. Ze verloren maar een beetje tijd op specialist Evenepoel, maar bouwden de voorsprong ten opzichte van de rest op. Zaterdag wacht er een listige etappe. Met zo'n 2400 hoogtemeters en een aantal ploegen dat wat te bewijzen heeft, belooft het oorlog te zijn. Youri denkt vooral dat het in de eerste twee wedstrijduren flink tekeer gaat en adviseert de liefhebbers om er vroeg voor te gaan zitten. Met sterke renners als Matej Mohorič, Alberto Bettiol, Paul Lapeira, Magnus Cort, Maxim Van Gils én wereldkampioen Mathieu van der Poel kan er best eens een heel sterke kopgroep ontstaan die het tot het einde red. Kolesarska Dirka po Italiji se je začela po željah Tadeja Pogačarja, ki je dobil drugo etapo in se s tem podobno kot Primož Roglič in Matej Mohorič zapisal med nesmrtne kolesarje, saj je dobil vsaj eno etapo na vseh treh grand tourih, za piko na i pa je oblekel še majico vodilnega. Matej Mohorič was not the strongest climber or the fastest sprinter at Milan-San Remo. But he was strong enough to bridge the the front group over the decision final Poggio climb. And then, as his race will forever be remember, he dropped his dropper post and the best cyclists in the world on the technical descent and then held off his chasers on the flat 2.2km run-in to the finish. He was already one of the best sprinters ever before this year, but now with a performance that some are comparing to Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters it's hard for anyone to say he's not the greatest sprinter of all time. And his Deceuninck–Quick-Step team deserves ample praise for their savvy, guiding him to an impressive four stages. Now the big question is whether Cavendish will return to the Tour next year. Then there's the man who denied Cavendish a record breaking 35th stage win on the Champs Élysées—after winning on Mont Ventoux and the time trial just the day before. Could Wout van Aert have a go at contending for the GC? In a Jumbo-Visma team that has two GC contenders already in Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard, plus another promising GC talent in Sepp Kuss, is there room for him to pursue that?And speaking of GC contenders, now that Tadej Pogačar has won his second Tour, how far can he go in his career? And we look ahead to the Vuelta a España to the anticipated matchup of Pogačar, Roglič and Egan Bernal. Then there were the parts of the Tour we would rather leave behind. There was the police raid on the Bahrain-Victorious team, followed by Matej Mohorič's stage win with a zipped lips victory salute. Matej Mohorič wheeled away from the break to take a second victory on Stage 19 of the Tour de France on a day when Yellow Jersey Tadej Pogačar showed the pack who's the boss.“It was good to see him taking control of the race from the leader's point of view, because everyone looks up to him now, he's clearly the best rider, and I think that's a good sign of the next few years, of what's to come,” says Brad. “I think we've got a patron back in the peloton.“Marking his dominance, at the front of the peloton, in the Yellow Jersey, on world TV, I thought that's exactly what he should be doing. There's no unity in the peloton.”Brad also gives co-host Graham Willgoss a crash course in crash tactics from his 2012 playbook, and questions whether there is unrest in the Team Ineos camp.Break, or bunch sprint? That was the question on a stage where the big question was whether Mark Cavendish would surpass Eddy Merckx's record of 34 stage victories.“It doesn't work out every day,” says Brad. “The team has done quite a big job to get him to this point and the racing's frantic. It's not always as easy as just making it become a sprint when you've got the whole race against you, which I think he has, reading between the lines. It's very difficult. Guillaume Boivin is toughing it out now in the final stages of the Tour de France. He's faced crashes, heat, mountain climbs and a lack of vegetables. Listen to find out exactly what's going on with his diet.Boivin also discusses the Olympics. Near the beginning of July, he was named as the third rider, after Michael Woods and Hugo Houle, who will be at the road race in Tokyo. While still in the midst of his first Tour, Boivin looks ahead to his next big objective. In a way, the two events are similar: Boivin's role is to help Woods cross the finish line first.Boivin has been with the team Israel Start-Up Nation in its various forms since 2016. Before that he did a season with U.S. team Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies. There were also two years on the Cannondale WorldTour team with riders such as Peter Sagan, Matej Mohorič and Elia Viviani. Going way back, Boivin was on the influential Canadian pro continental squad SpiderTech. In 2010, he famously tied for third-place with Taylor Phinney at the under-23 world championship road race.While Boivin loves to mix it up in a bunch sprint, throughout the past few years, he's developed into a skilled support rider with a range of abilities. Take the current Tour de France, for example. Boivin's first job has been to help a climber like Michael Woods with his goals of stage wins and the KOM jersey. Yet, Boivin can also help out a fast man like André Greipel.The Tour de France is stressful for riders. But was Boivin dealing with an added stress at the start of the Tour? "It was some feat," says Brad. "He never looked like flinching."The big team not represented off in the break?
