The painful history of chattel slavery in the United States hasn't left behind much of a paper trail – and what we have is vague and inhumane. The incompleteness itself of this documentation speaks volumes. Which is why Benjamin Hall's family heirloom — a "manumission" or freedom paper – is such a big deal. Today, we're talking about the legacy of Frank Demas, also known as Thomas Willis and the freedom paper that tells a larger history of chattel slavery in the U.S. GUESTS: Rachel Clark, education specialist at the Archives of Michigan Benjamin Hall, descendant of Frank Demas, also known as Thomas Willis. ___ Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Madison's Federalist Paper No. 40, "The Powers of the Convention to Form a Mixed Government Examined and Sustained," examines the authority of the Constitutional Convention and the expectations surrounding the United States Constitution. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain how the Constitution was just a piece of paper that didn't mean anything until the states decided to ratify it. People were opposed to governmental revision due to their preexisting expectations and rules. Connor compares the Articles of Confederation to a broken foundation: one cannot build on it. The broken foundation needs to be gutted and rebuilt in order to support the structure. The Constitution equips the government with tools and principles to successfully sustain a prosperous country. People need to step up and have ‘manly confidence' when it comes to supporting the Constitution. Madison's Federalist Paper No. 39, "The Conformity of the Plan to Republican Principles," defines a true republic, explains why the proposed Constitution is a republic, and discusses how the United States is both a national and a federal government. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain how a republic is a government of the people, where the citizens of the country hold the power. Throughout history, the term ‘republic' has been skewed into either a type of oligarchy, where nobles and elites rule the country, or into a direct democracy, which is not an ideal form of government. History repeats itself, even in America. Connor calls for the need to establish national identity amongst Americans. Morgan and Connor discuss how the states are sovereign. Madison's Federalist Paper No. 38, "The Same Subject Continued, and the Incoherence of the Objections to the New Plan Exposed," argues that despite the objections to the Constitution, it is still a much needed and huge improvement to the Articles of Confederation. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain how America's form of government is unique. Throughout history, the different forms of government were generally a single person's idea that an entire country adopted. The founders wanted America to be the people's government; thus, multiple minds came together to create a new, more perfect form of government. Under the Articles of Confederation, America was dying - like a patient afflicted with a sickness; therefore, the Constitution was an essential treatment and solution. Madison's Federalist Paper No. 37, "Concerning the Difficulties of the Convention in Devising a Proper Form of Government," examines the importance of setting aside differences to agree on a common form of government. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain how utopia is unachievable because men are not perfect. The Founding Fathers weren't perfect; therefore, the Constitution isn't perfect. It is, however, calling for a “more perfect Union” and for continual growth and strides towards that which is good. The purpose of the Constitution is to achieve balance and stability in a type of government that had never before been attempted. One should not merely scan through the Constitution, but rather, truly take the time to examine it thoroughly. Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 36, "The Same Subject Continued: Concerning the General Power of Taxation," examines the importance of having a representative government in regards to taxation. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain that someone on the federal level would not be able to make decisions regarding taxation for Americans all over the country due to differing concerns throughout individual communities; therefore, a representative government voices the concerns and local issues that unique communities have. Elected representatives should advocate on behalf of their community, especially in regards to taxation. Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 35, "The Same Subject Continued: Concerning the General Power of Taxation," examines equality and fairness at both the State and Federal level with regards to representation of the population in legislature and how that plays into taxation.Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain how imperative it is that the Federal Government has the ability to tax in addition to the State in order to create a more equal and fair playing field across the Union. They also break down basic economics: when taxes are increased on an industry, business leaders/producers will have to increase their prices, putting the burden of the tax back onto the consumer's shoulders. Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 34, "The Same Subject Continued: Concerning the General Power of Taxation," examines the concurrent authority vested in states and the federal government in regards to taxation. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain that the pinnacle of greatness is the separation of powers between the State and the Federal Government. Like the Roman Republic, the United States was to have individual state powers, some concurrent; however, they were never to infringe on each other. Both the State and the Federal Government could coexist despite legislating differently, and the Federal Government was not designed to encroach on state affairs.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationIsTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 33, "The Same Subject Continued: Concerning the General Power of Taxation," examines the Supremacy Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause.Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg explain that the Necessary and Proper Clause was never intended to create powers, but rather to execute the existing powers provided to the government in the constitution. The Supremacy Clause states that the laws of a society must be the supreme regulator of each state's conduct; otherwise; the country will not be united on a federal level.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationIsTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers

She is the CEO of Young Americans against socialism, owner of Zegers freedom flags, and of the Morgan Zegers Show, Freedom Papers and Freedom Records. This week we get into the culture war being waged against todays youth and talk the solutions to some of the battles in that culture war.
Continuing the conversation with Federalist Paper No. 32, Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg discuss state taxation power. Hamilton begins the paper by acknowledging the necessity for states to have the authority to tax citizens without federal infringement, except in the case of imports and exports. "The Same Subject Continued: Concerning the General Power of Taxation" is one of the most cited of the Federalist Papers by the Supreme Court because it was integral in determining the dividing line between state and federal power. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg continue their conversation about taxation with Federalist Paper No. 31. In this paper, Hamilton approaches the subject more argumentatively, proving three reasons why taxes must be collected on a national level.Hamilton contends that funds are required for the government to fulfill its responsibilities to the people. Additionally, since future national threats cannot be predicted, the federal government's power to defend the country cannot be limited. Lastly, the ongoing responsibilities of the government require ongoing revenue. Therefore, taxation would be the most logical and practical means to accomplish this.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationIsTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
Charlie sits down with country music phenom, Coffey Anderson, a proud American who sings about the country he loves, its warriors, its people, and why it's still worth fighting for. Complete with a few songs LIVE and in studio, Coffey explains where the inspiration for his music comes from and why he will make no apology for defending the Stars and Stripes, regardless of the warnings from woke Nashville record labels demanding he conform. Coffey and Charlie also do a live taste test of Charlie's hot sauce, "Kirk's" (and Coffey, a Texas native, has some pretty strong opinions about hot sauce). Next up, Charlie welcomes TPUSA Contributor Morgan Zegers, and host of "Freedom Papers from TPUSA" and The Morgan Zegers Show, to to discuss one of Charlie's favorite books, Christopher Caldwell's "Age of Entitlement" for a deep dive into the radical and "transformative" nature of the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s. Morgan reflects on what she learned reading this consequential treatise and why it's critical for understanding the conservative movement over the last 30 or 40 years. Did the well-intentioned reforms of the 1960s undermine the brilliance of the Constitution, or did it complete it? Morgan and Charlie reflect on the one book all of you need to read. Connor Clegg returns with Morgan Zegers to analyze Federalist Paper No. 30. Chris Palombi, former Capitol police officer, joins Morgan Zegers this week to discuss the deterioration of the United States' education system. Chris shares his thoughts on the school curriculum as a current teacher and hockey coach in Maryland.Morgan and Chris examine the founding fathers' intended role of government and how the politicians and elites have abandoned those principles. Co-host Connor Clegg returns this week with Morgan Zegers to continue the conversation about restraining the government's authority. A timely topic of discussion, Connor and Morgan relate the new Governance Disinformation Board to Anti-Federalist concerns of federal tyranny. Morgan Zegers is joined by Turning Point Ambassador, Micah Bock, to discuss how the legislature vested a significant amount of its powers to the executive branch. Our founders never envisioned additional executive arms of the government within three-letter bureaucratic agencies with potential to utilize force similar to that of the military.Hamilton believed that the people's confidence and obedience to the government would largely depend on the goodness or badness of the administration. In Federalist Paper No. 26, “The Idea of Restraining the Legislative Authority in Regards to the Common Defense Considered,” Hamilton advocates for the government to have unrestricted power to organize and maintain a standing army. Disagreeing with some of Hamilton's thoughts in this paper, Morgan Zegers asks the question – where do we draw the line between giving up freedom and liberty in exchange for security through the government? And is the risk of having a standing army greater than the risk of not having one? This week, Morgan Zegers continues the conversation about common defense with Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 25. The Anti-federalists feared the unlimited power a federal government would have with a standing army and instead felt that each state should provide for its own defense. In this same subject continued, Hamilton resumes making a case for the Federalist view, expressing concern for the inner conflict that could occur if each state had an army, and the disproportionate burden on more geographically vulnerable states.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationIsTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
Morgan Zegers is joined by co-host Connor Clegg to discuss Hamilton's "The Powers Necessary to the Common Defense Further Considered." Federalist Paper No. 24 directly argues against the anti-federalists, who feared the federal government would have too much power, inevitably turning against their own people. In particular, the anti-federalist's main concern was the federalist's desire for a large standing army. While the federalists felt this would be necessary to ensure defense from foreign invaders, the anti-federalists feared oppressive centralized power. Connor Clegg joins Morgan Zegers to evaluate Federalist Paper No. 23, written by Hamilton. Titled “The Necessity of a Government as Energetic as the One Proposed to Preservation of the Union,” Hamilton expresses the need for the federal government to have unrestricted power to provide for the common defense. The founders believed that the three branches of government, with their checks and balances in place, would allow it to effectively protect the nation while simultaneously restricting its ability to repress the people. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg discuss Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 22, continuing the conversation about the weaknesses of the founding fathers' original form of government and the pressing need for reform. Hamilton argues that the country at the time was too unstable and inconsistent to have prosperous commerce both internally and internationally. Each state set its own expectations, and people were motivated by self-interest instead of national interest, leaving America vulnerable to foreign corruption. On today's episode, Connor Clegg joins Morgan Zegers to wrap up the conversation about the inadequacies of The Articles of Confederation. After providing several former and current examples of failed or insufficient confederacies, Federalist Paper No. 21 dives into the weaknesses of the founding fathers' original form of government.Hamilton stresses that for a country to reach the best solution, the leaders must have a deep understanding of the common man's problems. Morgan and Connor discuss how the founders accomplished this by evaluating the past and present issues they faced. Morgan Zegers discusses Federalist Paper No. 20, “The Same Subject Continued: The Insufficiency of the Present Confederation to Preserve the Union.” In the last of this series of papers, Hamilton and Madison continue to compare the failures of previous confederacies by examining The United Netherlands. At the time, The United Netherlands was made up of small independent regions of aristocracies that came together to form a sovereign state. Every province and city had to unanimously vote to enact any change, creating a slow and inefficient confederacy. This inefficiency rewarded corruption that led to its eventual collapse. Morgan Zegers and Connor Clegg dissect Federalist Paper No. 19, written by Hamilton and Madison. Continuing to address the failures of the Articles of the Confederacy, this paper focuses on the current examples of confederacies, notably the Germanic body up to 1787.Hamilton and Madison argued that although the Germanic body hadn't fallen, it was rather mediocre and lacked enough structure to allow prosperity. The founders' goal was to create a unified nation that was mindful of negative tendencies within human nature while still allowing for the potential of human excellence to prosper.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationIsTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
In Federalist Paper No. 18, Madison and Hamilton came together to dissect the collapse of ancient Greece to find the vulnerabilities within a republic structure and then address how to avoid those in the future. Morgan Zegers and co-host Connor Clegg continue the conversation about the failures of the Articles of Confederation to protect and support a strong republic in the long term. Specifically, this week's show discusses how Athens' limited size hindered its ability to unify power throughout the country. As a result, Greece's larger, more powerful leagues could tyrannize the smaller, weaker leagues within their already fragile union. This authoritarian power was left unchecked by societal order, creating inner fractures that Rome viewed as an opportunity to seize power and conquer Greece.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationisTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
Morgan Zegers and co-host Connor Clegg are back to talk about Hamilton's Federalist Paper No. 17, an optimistic and arguably naive perspective from the Federalists.“The Same Subject Continued: The Insufficiency of the Present Confederation to Preserve the Union,” argues that the federal government would never be interested in encroaching on the rights of the states or expanding federal power beyond their limited jurisdiction of commerce, finance, negotiation, and war. Morgan and Connor disagree with Hamilton and express that the federal government has an immense incentive to overstep and infringe on the rights of local jurisdictions.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!#TaxationisTheft #FreedomPapers #iHeartAmerica #BigGovSucks #FederalistPapers
This week, Morgan Zegers is continuing the conversation about the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation in Federalist Paper No. 16.The Articles of Confederation joined the states and defined their roles, whereas the Constitution united the people and their government. Morgan explains that it would almost be inevitable for delinquent states to rise up and join together to catalyze another civil war without the Constitution.Join Morgan Zegers weekly on Freedom Papers for a conversation that focuses on the necessity of America's most important manuscripts and the debates surrounding them!
