Guests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Imperial Decay of the American Order. The discussion shifts to the deterioration of American institutions, which Germanicus claims are now indistinguishable from the 3rd-century Roman imperial system. He describes a "long unraveling" of the constitutional order where Congress has become "nothing" and the Supreme Court is forced to uphold basic tenets it wasn't designed to enforce. This "emperor system" is characterized by an executive branch that is increasingly detached from reality regarding global economic stability and military resources. Furthermore, he asserts that the political establishment is too corrupt to produce genuine leaders, resulting in "pygmies" who are incapable of challenging the prevailing delusions. He warns that the U.S. is at a historical "inflection point" similar to when the Roman Empire began to collapse after centuries of dominance, noting that current leaders risk a global "economic fault" or famine by pursuing unsustainable escalations in Eurasia. (2)SULLAGuests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Ritual of Combat and Modern Delusions. Germanicusargues that for the Romans, war and ceremony were inextricably linked, using triumphs and gladiatorial spectacles to forge a shared identity between the people and the military. These rituals were "incarnations of the spirit of Rome" triumphing over "barbaric" enemies, providing a form of "ecstatic participatory" fulfillment. He notes a parallel in modern America, which uses "ecstatic vicarity" through high-tech war footage and video games to maintain a similar bond. However, he warns that the U.S. dangerously underestimates adversaries like Iran by viewing them as "barbarians" rather than a sophisticated, 2,500-year-old culture. He laments the loss of the "sobriety" that guided Cold War leadership—where the stakes of nuclear confrontation were understood—noting that current American policy reflects a "gods of war" complex born from the easy successes of the early 1990s. Gaius adds that this technological display creates a "fog of war" where the enemy's own capabilities and "vote" in the conflict are often ignored. (1)

This week's episode has a little bit of everything—local politics, a suspicious number of Star Trek–named kittens, some genuinely cool green tech, and a short story that hits you with an existential haymaker. Real Life  Devon's in a "life is… fine" zone, which is either stability or the calm before chaos—we'll let you decide. That leads into a surprisingly interesting question: does a mayor's party affiliation actually matter at the local level? Texas elections are happening right now, and it sparks a broader conversation about how much politics really trickles down into day-to-day governance. Also on the home front: kids' birthday parties, which are somehow both joyful and mildly exhausting. Ben has fully entered his foster-dad era—but for kittens. A whole crew of them: Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer, and their mom Majel. He claims he didn't name them, which statistically feels unlikely. Either way, it's a Starfleet-grade lineup. Meanwhile, Devon's household remains firmly anti-new-pet, so don't expect a crossover episode there. We also touch on For All Mankind, and then pivot into the upcoming Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender film—specifically the leaks, early reactions, and what happens when studios lose control of the narrative before release. There's some real-world legal tension brewing there. Steven… well, Steven exists this week. (You'll hear it.)   Future or Now  Devon brings in a heavy one: reports that the independent board overseeing the National Science Foundation has been abruptly dismissed, raising serious concerns about political interference in scientific research and long-term innovation. You can read more here:  https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/28/trump-fires-national-science-foundation-board  https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-fired-national-science-foundation-board-b2965242.html  This isn't just bureaucratic reshuffling—it could have real downstream effects on funding, research priorities, and scientific independence. Ben tries to balance things out with something genuinely cool: Mosscrete. https://gorespyre.com/  It's a bioreceptive concrete designed to grow moss directly on buildings using nothing but rain and humidity. No irrigation, no maintenance-heavy systems—just passive, living architecture. It's one of those ideas that feels obvious in hindsight but actually takes some clever engineering to pull off. This whole topic also dredges up a deep memory: Bill Nye's moss-and-milk experiment. If you know, you know. If you don't, you probably just learned something slightly unsettling about childhood science videos. Steven is present in this segment as well. Technically.   Book Club Next Week: Saint Zero of the Hollows and the Eagle Knight by V.M. Ayala https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/saint-zero-of-the-hollows-and-the-eagle-knight/  "The only sound Zero heard in their helmet was their own hyperventilating and the gentle pings from their pegasus." That line alone is doing a lot of work. We're excited for this one. This Week: Learning To Be Me by Greg Egan http://thetafiction.com/story/learning-to-be-me/  "I was six years old when my parents told me that there was a small, dark jewel inside my skull, learning to be me." This story landed hard for all of us. It follows a life from childhood to adulthood in a way that feels deceptively simple—until it isn't. The structure does a ton of heavy lifting, and the twist is the kind that makes you immediately want to reread it. We get into some big ideas here, especially panpsychism—the notion that consciousness might be a fundamental property of the universe rather than something that just "emerges." It's one of those discussions that starts philosophical and ends slightly unsettling. If you like episodes that bounce between grounded real life, big-picture science, and brain-bending fiction, this one's for you.

UK markets faced a sharp deterioration in sentiment in the final week of the tax year, as escalating tensions around the Iran conflict weighed heavily on business confidence. The Institute of Directors (“IoD”) index fell to a record low, reinforced by survey evidence from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (“ICAEW”), highlighting a rapid deterioration in corporate outlook. Inflation risks intensified, driven by surging energy prices, with analysts expecting the energy price cap to rise by 18% in July. Food inflation is also projected to accelerate to 9% by year-end from 3.3%, adding further pressure on households. Markets responded by pricing in renewed rate hikes, although Bank of England (“BoE”) Governor Andrew Bailey pushed back, cautioning that markets may be overreacting and signalling that policymakers remain focused on supporting growth through an energy-driven shock.Stocks featured:3i Group, Babcock International Group and Berkeley Group HoldingsTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. https://teachhoops.com/ The rise of national and regional youth basketball rankings for players as young as fourth or fifth grade is one of the most polarizing developments in the sport. On the "helpful" side, rankings can provide exposure and validation for elite talents who might otherwise be overlooked, especially those in rural areas. They can also serve as a "benchmark" for players, sparking a competitive fire to work harder. However, at the youth level, these lists are often "Projection-Based Guesswork." A player who is "ranked" at age 11 is often simply the child who hit their growth spurt early or has matured physically faster than their peers. By the time they reach high school, the "late bloomers" often catch up, rendering those early rankings irrelevant. The primary danger of early rankings is the creation of a "Fixed Mindset" and the "Arrival Fallacy." When a 12-year-old is told they are "Top 50 in the Nation," they often stop seeking the "hard coaching" that builds long-term success. They begin to play for the "highlight reel" rather than the "win," leading to the "Deterioration of Fundamentals." Instead of learning how to move without the ball or set a proper screen, they focus on isolation plays that will look good on social media. Conversely, players who aren't ranked often feel "defeated" before they've even reached puberty, leading to premature burnout and a loss of "Trust Equity" in the developmental process. As a coach or parent, you must master the "Art of the Filter." Use rankings as a "conversation starter," not a "conclusion." If a player is ranked, challenge them to prove they are the hardest worker in the gym, not just the most talented. If they aren't ranked, use it as fuel for their "underdog" mentality. Utilize TeachHoops member calls to "audit" your program's culture: are you celebrating "national status," or are you celebrating the "Zero-Talent" metrics like floor dives and box-outs? By prioritizing "Rep Density" and Skill Acquisition over "digital clout," you ensure that your athletes are building a foundation that will actually hold up when the college scouts start watching for real in 11th grade. Ep 315 Is the "Summer Grind" Building Better Players or Just More Fatigue?

Coaching Youth Hoops

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2026 14:01

https://teachhoops.com/ Summer basketball has transformed from an "off-season" of individual skill development into a high-octane, multi-game marathon. For many youth players, the summer circuit offers unparalleled exposure and competition. Playing against different styles and elite talent from across the country can accelerate a player's "Game Sense" and confidence. It forces athletes out of their comfort zones and provides a realistic benchmark of where they stand in the national or regional landscape. However, the "Helpful" side of the summer grind is only realized if the player is actually playing—not just traveling. A summer spent on a bench in a high-profile "shoe circuit" is often less beneficial than a summer spent in a local gym getting 500 game-speed shots up every morning. The "Harmful" impact of the modern summer circuit often manifests as "Burnout and Overuse." When the Game-to-Practice ratio reaches a tipping point—sometimes playing 6 games in a 48-hour window—fundamental execution suffers. We see the "Deterioration of Fundamentals" as players trade disciplined defensive stances and triple-threat positioning for "survival mode" mechanics. Physically, the lack of a true "Rest and Recovery" phase in the summer can lead to "Micro-Trauma" in young joints, setting the stage for more serious injuries during the winter season. As a coach, you must help your players and parents understand the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio ($ACWR$) to ensure they aren't redlining their bodies before they even reach high school. Ultimately, the goal of summer basketball should be "Targeted Growth." Use this time to address the "leaks" identified during the school season. If a player struggled with their "weak-hand" finishing in February, their summer focus should be 70% skill-specific training and 30% competitive play. Utilize TeachHoops member calls to audit your players' summer schedules: are they chasing "Rankings," or are they chasing "Development"? By prioritizing "Rep Density" and individual skill acquisition over a trophy in a July tournament, you ensure that your athletes return in the fall as more versatile, resilient, and high-IQ basketball players who are ready to lead a championship culture. Summer basketball, youth player development, AAU basketball, basketball coaching, basketball exposure, coaching philosophy, player burnout, overuse injuries, basketball fundamentals, high school basketball, youth sports, basketball IQ, coach development, athletic leadership, basketball training, skill acquisition, game-to-practice ratio, basketball success, mental toughness, coach unplugged, teach hoops, basketball mentorship, summer circuit, basketball recruiting. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 4th of December, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” Then we go to the New Testament, to 1 Corinthians 10:12: “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”Today I read a beautiful article in another devotional and the title was “Deterioration”. I looked up the Oxford Dictionary. It means, “becoming gradually worse or going downhill.” Now Solomon had an incredibly wonderful start in his life. Remember? Remember, the Lord woke him up and he was dreaming and He said, “What do you want? I will give you anything.” And he said, “I want wisdom to govern my people.” Solomon was the son of King David. The Lord said to him, ”Because you have asked correctly, I am going to give you everything else.” He was the wisest man who ever lived, he was an architect (remember, he built the temple), he was extremely popular, a very, very handsome man, very clever. He also wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes, we believe. He talks about “Vanity, vanity, this life is like chasing the wind.” I hope you are not there today, my friend. I really mean that with all of my heart.I really hope you don't think, “I have got it all together, I don't need anybody, I can do this myself, I have made my own plan." Folks, there is only one way down when you get to the top, and that is straight down. I want to tell you about a man named Howard Hughes. Maybe some of the younger people don't remember him. Howard Hughes was a filmmaker, an aviator, and an incredible pilot and aircraft designer. They described him as a millionaire genius who lost his mind. Isn't that so sad? He lost his mind. What happened? He became a recluse, living all by himself, and then slowly but surely wasted away to nothing. I want to say to you today, be careful how you stand lest you fall.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

In 1 Chronicles 16 we have the ark finally arriving at Zion after the disastrous first attempt. It was placed in the tent David had pitched for it. And after the spirit of the Melchizedek king priest, David as a great sign of fellowship offers to all the people bread (meat) and wine (in the form of clusters of raisins). Burnt offerings and thanksgiving offerings accompany these actions and all the people receive portions of these offerings. Verses 8 to 35 record David's Psalm of thanksgiving, which was sung by the 24 orders of priests (previously organised by Samuel and David). The people enthusiastically respond in verse 36, "AMEN". The praise for Yahweh's 'chesed' - "loving kindness" continues. Psalm 132 was composed to commemorate the bringing of the ark to Zion - read it and marvel as it speaks of the righteousness andTop of the Documentsalvation, that will be ushered in when the glorious Kingdom of the Son of God comes. The Psalm needs to be read in conjunction with 1 Chronicles 17. In Ezekiel 28 we have a parabolic taunt against Tyre. In the days of Solomon, they shared in the brotherly covenant and cooperated in all things. Deterioration came between the kingdoms, as evil kings came to reign. The language is picturesque, but when read carefully, totally understandable. Verse 2 addresses the prince of Tyre - a man. Commercial and maritime wisdom abounded in this city state. They were not supernatural for the account says that they were slain by the sword. From verses 12-19 the Tyrians were in Eden - a geographic region described in Genesis 2. Then the chapter tells us of judgments on Sidon, Tyre's sister city. When Yahweh brought these judgments Israel would be regathered and restored. In Galatians we have one of the earliest books of the New Testament to be written- perhaps as early as AD42 depending upon the theory which adopted. The book must have been written after the Jerusalem' Conference, which was about the date mentioned previously. Galatians is the second of three treatises on the Atonement i.e. how sinners can be made right with God - the others being Romans and Hebrews. All three books are based on Habakkuk 2:4, "The just shall live by faith". The emphasis in Romans is the JUST...; in Galatians it is ... LIVE by faith; and in Hebrews.. live by FAITH. The problem of Judaism is addressed in this book. The Judaizers, Paul's constant foes, taught salvation was by works of the Law, and not by faith. They preached that Christ and belief in him were insufficient to save - that the keeping of the Law was also necessary in order to be saved. In Galatians 1 Paul establishes his credentials and says how he was called to the gospel. Paul also indicates that a curse would rest on anyone preaching a variant of the only true gospel. The Apostle explains that the gospel message was given him in Arabia by direct revelation i.e. personally taught it by Jesus Christ - none of the other Apostles were in any way connected with his instruction. Chapter 2 teaches us of the firm stance that Paul took on not circumcising Titus. The chapter also spoke of Peter's equivocation and hypocrisy, when confronted by false brethren called Judaizers. Read verses 15-21 aloud. Pause and ponder. Let each of us determine to live our life in Christ Jesus as the great Apostle did.

In this episode of the Ephesiology Podcast, the hosts discuss the recent tragedy involving Charlie Kirk and the broader implications of gun violence in America. They explore the intersection of faith, politics, and violence, reflecting on the Christian response to such tragedies. The conversation emphasizes the need for love, justice, and a departure from divisive ideologies, calling for a return to the core teachings of Jesus. The hosts lament the state of the church and the challenges of loving one’s enemies, ultimately encouraging listeners to seek healing and wholeness through Christ. Keywords Ephesiology, Charlie Kirk, gun violence, Christian response, justice, love, political narratives, church, discipleship, healing Takeaways Charlie Kirk’s death raises important questions about violence and faith. Gun violence is a significant issue in America, with tragic consequences. Christians are called to respond to violence with love and compassion. Political narratives often complicate discussions about faith and violence. The church must address the root causes of violence in society. Justice is rooted in love and should seek to heal and restore. Lament and mourning are essential responses to tragedy. The zero-sum game of ideology is detrimental to society. Christians are called to a radical love that transcends political divides. True discipleship involves engaging with difficult issues in a loving manner. Sound Bites “Nobody deserves this, right?” “We have to lament, have to mourn.” “We are called to a sacrificial love.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction to the Ephesiology Podcast03:40 The Impact of Charlie Kirk’s Death06:40 Reflections on Violence and Christian Response10:31 The Role of the Church in Addressing Violence13:56 The Deterioration of Society and Political Narratives18:22 The Zero-Sum Game of Ideological Conflict21:25 A Call to a Higher Mission26:22 Justice and Discipleship in a Divided World29:39 Lamenting and Mourning in the Face of Tragedy33:33 The Cycle of Gun Violence and Its Impact35:48 The Call to Love Our Enemies37:05 The Theological Implications of Hate38:11 Justice as an Expression of Love39:57 The Role of Christians in Pursuing Wholeness41:26 Cultural Influences on Violence and Desensitization43:06 The Challenge of Sacrificial Love45:40 Radicalization and the Temptation to Violence47:22 Finding Peace in Troubling Times48:50 Addressing the Wounded Church50:43 The Hope Found in Jesus Connect With Us Follow Ephesiology: Website | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube Follow Andrew Johnson @thediscfan.bsky.social Follow Matt Till https://matttill.com If this episode encouraged you, please leave a review and share it with others exploring missional living in post-Christian contexts. In this episode, Dr. John Gartner, a clinical psychologist and former professor, discusses the mental and cognitive decline of former President Donald Trump. Dr. Gartner emphasizes that Trump's deteriorating condition, which includes signs of dementia, malignant narcissism, and potential bipolar spectrum disorder, was evident even before his presidency and has worsened over time. The conversation highlights Trump's frequent, erratic social media usage, his memory lapses, and his increasingly incoherent speech as symptoms that support this diagnosis. Dr. Gartner also expresses concern over the normalization of Trump's abnormal behavior by the media and political allies. The episode explores the potential dangers of Trump's unpredictability, especially regarding impulsive decisions that could have grave consequences. The episode concludes with a discussion about the importance of mental health evaluations for presidential candidates and the systemic failures that prevent the invocation of the 25th Amendment.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Your favorite shrinks, John Gartner and Harry Segal, look at Trump's meandering tour of the Cabinet Room while sounding the alarm on his encroachment on democracy. And as an added bonus, Harry actually sings! Be sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts: Our site Subscribe on iTunes Subscribe on Spotify Subscribe on Amazon Music Subscribe on iHeartRadio In this urgent new episode, clinical psychologists Dr. John Gartner and Dr. Harry Siegel unpack an unsettling paradox: as Donald Trump's political power surges, his grip on reality appears to slip. We're calling this one “The Deterioration of Dominance,” because it lays bare how eroded norms and unchecked authority have collided with signs of cognitive decline—an alarming combination for any democracy. First, our hosts sketch Trump's psychological profile, zeroing in on malignant narcissism: his profound empathy deficit, his penchant for punishing perceived enemies, and the criminality that shadows so many of his maneuvers. Drawing on interviews, public statements, and the latest behavioral research, Gartner and Siegel show how these traits drive everything from impulsive tweetstorms to chaotic decision-making. A centerpiece of today's discussion is foreign policy. The pair dissect Trump's erratic handling of US arms shipments to Ukraine—including the explosive revelation that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paused deliveries without consulting the president. Rather than a sober strategic decision, Trump's response—through contradictory statements and off-the-record leaks—becomes a lesson in image management gone awry. We also map the unsettling echoes of authoritarian playbooks inside America. From heavily militarized ICE raids to executive overreach on birthright citizenship, Gartner and Siegel trace how the normalization of fear and secrecy undermines civil liberties and chills judicial independence. This isn't mere theory; it's a blueprint of how incremental abuses can hollow out institutions. Throughout the episode, parallels between Trump's grandiose self-view and Vladimir Putin's real-world power plays drive home the stakes. Can minor policy disruptions ever serve global stability, or are they simply cover for an emboldened strongman fantasy? Our hosts debate the risks—and the slim paths to push back. Above all, “The Deterioration of Dominance” is a call to vigilance. Understanding Trump's psychological drivers isn't just psychoanalysis—it's a roadmap for resisting the drift toward authoritarianism. If you believe democratic processes matter, this is a must-hear. Tune in with Dr. Gartner and Dr. Siegel each week for fearless, expert analysis of the psychology fueling our politics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
