In this episode, I review the pathological and clinical dimensions of migraine, the most common disabling neurological disorder. I tried to capture migraine's diverse disabling recurrent symptoms, from its risk factors, triggers and prodrome to the aura, the headache, and multiple heightened sensitivities. To illustrate the lived experience of migraine, its classical manifestations, and its curious variants, I refer to such vivid patient memoirs as those of Monica Nelson titled Mere Sense, and Abby Reed titled The Color of Pain. I also cited Oliver Sacks classical book titled 'Migraine'.I also flavour the podcast with historical migraine patient anecdotes, such as those of Ann Conway, the enlightenment writer who was treated by the great physicians William Harvey and Thomas Willis, of Annie, who was treated with an astounding number of therapies by the famous Queen Square neurologist William Gowers, and of Alexander Pope who treated his migraines in a most unconventional way.In this regard, I relied on Migraine: A History, Katherine Foxhall's magnificent historical account of the medieval ideas and treatments of the disorder, and Soul Made Flesh, Carl Zimmer's exhilarating biography of Thomas Willis. The podcast also explores and the evolution of migraine's acute and preventative treatments, and how a better understanding of its pathology is leading to treatments such as those that influence the CGRP pathway.

The painful history of chattel slavery in the United States hasn't left behind much of a paper trail – and what we have is vague and inhumane. The incompleteness itself of this documentation speaks volumes. Which is why Benjamin Hall's family heirloom — a "manumission" or freedom paper – is such a big deal. Today, we're talking about the legacy of Frank Demas, also known as Thomas Willis and the freedom paper that tells a larger history of chattel slavery in the U.S. GUESTS: Rachel Clark, education specialist at the Archives of Michigan Benjamin Hall, descendant of Frank Demas, also known as Thomas Willis. ___ Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Since 2008, Mike has led Living Water International through years of unprecedented growth by helping church communities around the world become more effective agents of gospel-driven change. The scientists affiliated with the early Royal Society of London have long been regarded as forerunners of modern empiricism, rejecting the symbolic and moral goals of Renaissance natural history in favor of plainly representing the world as it really was. In Aesthetic Science, Alexander Wragge-Morley challenges this interpretation by arguing that key figures such as John Ray, Robert Boyle, Nehemiah Grew, Robert Hooke, and Thomas Willis saw the study of nature as an aesthetic project. To show how early modern naturalists conceived of the interplay between sensory experience and the production of knowledge, Aesthetic Science: Representing Nature in the Royal Society of London, 1650-1720 (U Chicago Press, 2020) explores natural-historical and anatomical works of the Royal Society through the lens of the aesthetic. By underscoring the importance of subjective experience to the communication of knowledge about nature, Wragge-Morley offers a groundbreaking reconsideration of scientific representation in the early modern period and brings to light the hitherto overlooked role of aesthetic experience in the history of the empirical sciences. Alexander Wragge-Morley is a lecturer in the history of science and medicine at the University of Lancaster. His research seeks to understand how people in the past obtained knowledge through sensory experience. In doing so, he brings together histories of science, medicine, the body, the neurosciences, art, literature, and religion.
