When we picture the American Revolution, we picture battles. But for the men and women who actually lived and fought in it, the Revolution was also a job with mess rotations, night watches, short rations, and children underfoot. Historians Eugene Procknow, Gabriel Neville, and Thomas Sobol pull back the curtain on everyday military life during the War for Independence. They discuss how the armies were structured, what soldiers actually ate, what camp followers endured, and how soldiers found humanity amid grinding hardship. You'll hear about a Black Continental soldier who had eaten nothing but bread for eleven days, and was still writing letters home that went unanswered. A Georgia soldier who agreed to fight for the British just to escape a prison ship, then deserted and marched across two states to rejoin Nathanael Greene's army. And you'll discover why John Adams believed the most dangerous moment of the Revolution wasn't a battle at all.Show Notes: https://www.benfranklinsworld.com/403 EPISODE OUTLINE00:00:00 Introduction00:05:44 Structure of the British and Continental Armies00:10:33 Militia, German Soldiers, and Indian Allies00:20:43 Everyday Life in the American War for Independence00:25:80 Camp Followers00:33:10 Downtime in the Army00:36:59 Soldiers' Letters00:46:00 Food Procurement & Supply Chains00:50:27 Supplementing Rations00:55:34 War Mementoes & Plunder00:58:36 Medical Care in the Army01:08:07 The Revolution in ContextRECOMMENDED NEXT EPISODES
Father Tom Wilson joins Patrick to discuss Human Dignity (10:45) Identity of human Dignity Why does the Church even care about AI? (18:31) Nick - In a couple months, it would be nice to go back to this to see how the public has digested it. Militia of the Immaculate...look at encyclicals. We have a duty to uphold and live a life worthy and protect the venerable. We're called to be missionary disciples. Hold the identity of all. Tom -Remember back in 3rd grade...had to use the bathroom. Janitor was in there and asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Said I didn't want to be a janitor and he told me there's dignity in every job you do. (25:23) Break 1 Is AI all bad? (32:12) Erica - Separate time talent and treasure from the idea that we're not needing to do anything to be valuable to God. Trying to be fruitful with the gifts he's given us. How does human interaction get lost in technology? (38:21) Break 2 Margo - For the people who are not intellectually able. I work with some of them. They get caught up with a lot of scams...tend to be gullible. As things advance with AI, grows worse. Their level of comprehension is more challenging. (42:33) Mary Alice - There's an epidemic of loneliness. I've asked them to stop texting me. I understand there's so many who are craving to get together, but guys play with hand held devices and have little social skills. (47:52) How does upholding human dignity help society to flourish? You can send a text, include contact info to get a response. The challenges to recruiting enough men for service in the Royal Navy and the Army and Militia were formidable. It is revealed that the War of 1812 was really one war too many for Britain. The necessity to supply seamen for the new North American Lake service meant that the Royal Navy did not have enough men to staff the newly produced ships. The Mediterranean command and the North American commands were both screaming or more ships. The Army had its challenges as well. Losses exceeded new recruits from standard methods every year, but 1807. Special efforts were required. The Militia had its own challenges, needing to put down the Luddite Riots 1811-1813.

5. The Fighting 69th and the Struggle for Acceptance Irish immigrants joined the "Fighting 69th" militia for military training and to show gratitude toward the country that provided them security. During the Civil War, Captain James Cavanagh displayed extraordinary bravery at the Battle of Antietam, vowing to hold his position until the "last one of us" was killed. Despite heroic service at Fredericksburg, the Irish still faced pervasive religious and racial prejudice. Some, like dance teacher Judson Sauce, changed their names to hide their Irish heritage. After the war, veterans often returned to humble manual trades, though some eventually secured stable civil service positions as recognition of their service. 52899 BALHOOLY
Continuing our discourse, Germanicus notes a profound shift: the citizen-militia that once defended the republic has been replaced by a professional force, decoupling the public from the costs of war. Modern "ceremonial war" relies on missiles or foreign proxies like Ukraine to do the dying, yet fails to reach strategic conclusions. The coming midterm elections represent a "body blow" that could see the opposition seize control of the House, while the potential rise of "Democratic Socialists" — compared to the Bolshevik revolution — threatens identity politics and wealth confiscation that would lead to a "time of troubles." We conclude that both parties are essentially eating from the same soup bowl while the empire erodes. (2)1572 AFTER THE FALL OF CONSTANTIOPLE.

It's a war between Israel, the US and Iran...but how did Lebanon get dragged into it? Its militia group, Hezbollah, is a loyal proxy of the Iranian regime, placing tens of millions of Lebanese citizens at risk in the name of loyalty to its top financier and ally. More than 1000 people have been killed, and more than a million have been displaced. Earlier this week Israel's Defence Minister said his country plans on annexing a large portion of southern Lebanon for security purposes, a move Canada denounced. Host Maria Kestane speaks to Aurel Braun, a political science and international relations professor at the University of Toronto to discuss the Lebanese government's complex relationship with Hezbollah, how Canada and other NATO countries could help the government dismantle the militia, and what comes next for its civilians. Msgr. Jason Gray joins Patrick to discuss Lessons from Bishop Fulton Sheen Msgr. Gray’s background (4:40) who was Bishop Fulton Sheen and what is his legacy? (9:34) Nick - Part of Militia of Immaculata. Headquarters was in Peoria until it moved. Tomb of Bp Sheen is there and adoration chapel. He had a saying...those who leave do it for what they think it is. He taught me how to love and learn the faith and serve the Lord. It's so intertwined. Stall in beatification. We know when that happens...it's good because Satan wants to mess things up. What were some challenges of the beatification of Fulton Sheen? (16:27) Ken - I was raised in a Catholic/Protestant home. Father was protestant and would listen to Bp Fulton Sheen with mom. He was impressed by Sheen and would laugh at some comments. When I started listening to RR, I can hear my father's laughter. (21:02) Break 1 How do you get canonized? (25:35) Art - When I was a boy in the 60's, my parents used to watch his program. I remember it was always brighter (we only had black and white). Always wondered why that was. I realized it was the holy spirit. Found that fascinating. Very blessed man. Regina - Received a minor miracle for surgery. Had bad cataracts. Didn't have health insurance at the time. I remember watching his program. Talked about angels. At the hospital, the surgeon was kind enough to get me an angel grant to pay for the surgery. (35:03) Break 2 (37:50) Dorothy - I missed him in the 50's. anecdote to share...his style. I worked in Catholic Charities. I didn't know the society of the propagation of the faith was a competitor of ours. Went to a performance and he was there. He had such a fun style. He asked me what I do...told him I was a secretary with CC...flung the cape over his shoulder almost in dismay. Had such a twinkle and fun personality. (40:41) Janine - My father was protestant, mom was catholic. Mom loved to watch him. Dad would watch with her. Made one wall black flocked wallpaper. We lived in uptown Chicago. To this day, I believe it had such an influence on dad because he did finally receive communion. I think it was Bp Sheen. Mary - I think Americans need to make a pilgrimage to some places. This week on "50 Weeks That Shaped America," we're headed to the winter of 1777-1778 and the strategic retreat by the Continental Army to Valley Forge, PA. Over the course of that winter, George Washington worked to turn the army from a group of ragtag militias into a unified force -- all with the help of a mysterious Prussian general. Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how Valley Forge was effectively a pop-up city, and how it reflected what would come in an independent United States.Join our America250 newsletter community! The question of whether people on the left should arm themselves becomes urgent when examining how law enforcement responds to heavily armed white protesters versus unarmed citizens of color. The Cliven Bundy standoff in 2014 reveals a disturbing pattern where 400 armed militia members pointed rifles at federal agents and local police negotiated their surrender of impounded cattle rather than enforce a court order. These armed protesters faced zero consequences while police called bloodshed over cattle unacceptable.Fast forward to the 2020 Michigan Capitol protest where armed white demonstrators in full tactical gear stormed the statehouse, blocked the senate floor, and stood in the gallery with AR-15s overlooking legislators. Law enforcement remained calm and professional, never deploying deadly force despite the obvious threat. The armed protest double standard becomes crystal clear when compared to the killings of George Floyd, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, and Renee Good. The Second Amendment discussion rarely acknowledges this racial component. When armed Black Panthers protested in California, Governor Ronald Reagan and the NRA immediately passed the Mulford Act banning open carry. Ruby Ridge and Waco involved white extremists, yet those incidents remain the rare exceptions where law enforcement confronted armed citizens. The militia movements and sovereign citizen ideology behind Bundy's resistance demonstrate how gun rights and political stance intersect with race in determining police response.Examining law enforcement professionalism through these cases raises uncomfortable questions about resistance, gun ownership on the left, and whether armed organization provides protection from hostile federal agencies. The pattern suggests heavily armed white protesters receive deescalation while unarmed people of color face deadly force. This armed resistance analysis challenges assumptions about Second Amendment rights and reveals the role race plays in determining who can safely exercise gun rights during political protest. The violent coup attempt of January 6th which sent Oath Keepers to jail was justice. Until Trump pardoned all of those people who were convicted and in jail, including Oath Keeper Stewart Rhodes. Now with recent events we are resharing our previous interview with someone who was involved. “America right now needs some exit ramps,” Jason Van Tatenhove said as we discussed his former role as national media director for the Oath Keepers, a group known for its far-right anti-government militia. While Jason would ultimately decide to leave the group in 2016 due to increasing racism and Holocaust denial within their membership, the Oath Keepers would go on to participate in the United States Capitol January 6th attack, led by followers of Donald Trump. Jason eventually testified before a U.S. House Select Committee about his position in media propaganda for the organization. He described their attempts at paramilitary tactics, plans for insurrection, and his relationship with Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, convicted of seditious conspiracy and evidence tampering. Jason publicly speaks about his concerns for continued paramilitary training groups and recruitment tactics in future election cycles. His book, The Perils of Extremism: How I Left the Oath Keepers and Why We Should Be Concerned about a Future Civil War, discusses the unsettled state surrounding extremism in America today and provides an insider view into the tactics used to recruit, train, and further radicalize persons with former military backgrounds, first-responders, and individuals who may otherwise feel disenfranchised by United States Democracy at this time. DIVERSE VOICES AND THE MILITIA MYTH Colleague Joseph Ellis. Ellis profiles key figures of 1774-1775, including the conservative John Dickinson, who sought to avoid war, and the revolutionary John Adams. He discusses the "delusion" created by Bunker Hill that amateurs could defeat professionals, a myth that persisted despite military realities. Ellis highlights Thomas Paine's Common Sense, which shifted the argument to natural rights and demonized the monarchy, arguing an island could not rule a continent and making independence seem inevitable. Each contestant tries to prove their gun knowledge dominance. It's a wild ride of bids, bluffs, and banter—who will come out on top? Tune in to find out! WLS is Lifestyle Pew Report Refresh! Pew Report Relaunch Resolutions Agency Brief "James Madison calculated that 500,000 armed rednecks could crush a federal army of 30,000. It's 2025, and the ATF is still trying to fudge those numbers. Spoiler alert: They can't." THE SETUP: The Panic of 1788 The Constitution is on the ropes. New York and Virginia are threatening to vote "No." The Fear: Anti-Federalists (Patrick Henry, George Mason) scream that a new "Standing Army" will crush the states and enslave the people. The Stakes: If Madison can't convince them the people are safe, the United States ends before it starts. THE ARGUMENT: Madison's Math of Tyranny Madison drops Federalist No. 46 on January 29, 1788. The Calculation: He estimates a federal army can max out at 25,000–30,000 men. The Counter-Force: He pits them against 500,000 "citizens with arms in their hands." The Reality: He argues a federal coup would be suicide. Not because the government is nice, but because the people will shoot them. The Distinction: He explicitly separates the "Federal Government" from "The People." We are the check; we are not the asset. THE "DEAL": Ratification via Firepower The Constitution passes only because of these assurances. Original Intent: This proves the Second Amendment (ratified 1791) was designed to preserve that 16-to-1 power ratio. European Comparison: Madison mocks acts of European kingdoms who "are afraid to trust the people with arms." He frames universal ownership as the definition of American liberty. THE BETRAYAL: Regulatory Creep & The Big Lie The Lie: "The Militia is the National Guard." The Dick Act of 1903 and modern commies try to tell you the Guard replaced the people. The Fact: Madison's math requires the people to be armed. If the "militia" is federally funded and deployed (National Guard), it's part of the standing army Madison warned us about. The Creep: NFA (1934), GCA (1968), and ATF braces/frame rules are all attempts to break Madison's ratio by disarming the 500,000. THE COMEBACK: How We Use This Today Bruen & History: Courts now look to "Text, History, and Tradition." Fed 46 is the gold standard of history. Weapons of War: Gun grabbers say you don't need "weapons of war." Federalist 46 says you must have them, or you cannot serve as the check on the standing army. The Bottom Line: Your AR-15 isn't a loophole. It's the lithmus test for whether Madison's promise is still alive. Going Ballistic Conspiracies and Gun Control Nonsense The fusion conspiracy Restoration of Rights? DOJ Plays Hide and Seek with the Truth Analysis: The DOJ denied a FOIA request seeking the specific criteria used for rights restoration (relief from disabilities), claiming they are not obligated to create or define such records for the public. This refusal persists despite recent pardons raising questions about the process. When: FOIA denial reported late Dec 2025. Executive Overreach: Minnesota Governor Ignores the People on Gun Rights Analysis: After failing to pass "assault weapon" bans through a divided legislature, Governor Tim Walz signed two executive orders to create a safety council and track gun violence costs. Critics argue this bypasses the legislative process and the will of the people. When: Executive orders signed Dec 2025. Hawaii's Wishful Thinking Meets Reality: A Supreme Court Showdown on the Second Amendment Analysis: Hawaii defends its "sensitive places" law in Wolford v. Lopez, citing the "Aloha Spirit" and historical laws to justify bans on carry on private property. The case is set for a Supreme Court showdown, challenging the state's restrictive interpretation of the Second Amendment. When: SCOTUS hearing scheduled for January 20, 2026. Court Strikes Down New Mexico Gun Waiting Period Analysis: The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals denied a rehearing request, upholding a ruling that New Mexico's 7-day waiting period is unconstitutional. The court found that such delays burden Second Amendment rights without sufficient historical support. When: Ruling finalized Dec 2025. California's Latest Gun Grab: Background Checks on Gun Barrels, Really? Analysis: A new California law mandates that all gun barrel sales must be processed through licensed dealers with background checks and fees. The legislation also targets "digital firearm manufacturing code" and opens the door for civil suits against unlawful manufacture. When: Law takes effect Jan 1, 2026. DC's AR-15 Control Chaos: The Feds Strike Back Analysis: The Trump DOJ has filed a lawsuit against Washington, D.C., arguing that its ban on AR-15s and registration requirements are unconstitutional under Heller and Bruen. The suit asserts these bans target "common use" firearms based on cosmetic features. When: Lawsuit filed Dec 2025. GOP Lawmakers Blast DOJ For Betraying Gun Owners on NFA Analysis: GOP lawmakers, led by Daines and Clyde, sent a letter to AG Bondi demanding the DOJ stop defending National Firearms Act (NFA) registration mandates. They argue that the removal of the underlying tax (via the "One Big Beautiful Bill") renders the registration requirement void and contrary to congressional intent. When: Letter sent Dec 2025. When 'Red Flags' Signal Trouble: Colorado's Case Against Gun Control Analysis: A tragic case study of a suicide in Colorado highlights the failure of "Red Flag" laws. Critics argue that these laws focus on gun confiscation rather than providing necessary mental health treatment, leaving individuals in crisis without the help they truly need. When: Analysis published Dec 29, 2025. When Gaza militia leader Yasser Abu Shabab was killed last week, few Palestinians mourned his death. After Israel's genocidal war in Gaza began in 2023, Abu Shabab and his Israel-backed Popular Forces group attempted to present themselves as an alternative to Hamas, but Palestinians instead viewed him as a traitor. What did his rise reveal about Israel’s strategy for Gaza? The Druze National Guard and Internal Strife in Southern Syria: Colleagues Ahmad Sharawi and Bill Roggio report that instability is growing in Syria's Druze-majority Suwayda province, where a newly formed "National Guard" militia has begun arresting and killing political opponents; the militia is spiritually guided by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, who has consolidated power by sidelining other Druze leaders who were open to reconciliation with the Assad regime, with Turkey expressing support for the anti-Assad Druze factions against both the Syrian government and Kurdish forces, while recent violence suggests a hardening of anti-regime sentiment. 1914 SYRIA
Few lines in the Constitution have provoked as much passion—or confusion—as this one: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” What did the Founding Fathers mean by “well regulated”? What did they mean by “Militia”? And, do any of those definitions hold in 21st-century America? Guns are one of the most divisive symbols in the country. At the same time, the idea of surrendering weapons and trusting the state feels dangerous, and to many, guns are not symbols of violence, but symbols of freedom. Still, the question remains: freedom at what cost? With mass shootings now a fixture of American life, with countless families being wrecked by gun violence—what exactly are we protecting? This debate is about what the Second Amendment really means, what its limits should be, what the root causes of our gun violence are. And how, if at all, we can address them. We think about this subject a lot: Would America be safer without the Second Amendment? To debate this topic we brought together Dana Loesch and Alan Dershowitz recently in Chicago—a city that has had more than its fair share of gun violence. Alan argued yes, that America would be safer without the Second Amendment. Alan is a lawyer, a law professor for 50 years at Harvard, and the author of too many books to mention. He has litigated and won hundreds of cases in multiple countries, including his pro bono defense of dissidents such as Natan Sharansky, Václav Havel, and Julian Assange. And he is a fierce advocate for tighter gun control in the United States. Dana Loesch argued no, that America would not be safer without the Second Amendment. Dana is one of the country's top nationally syndicated talk radio hosts with The Dana Show, a television commentator, preeminent Second Amendment advocate, and author of several books, including the best-selling Hands Off My Gun: Defeating the Plot to Disarm America. She is also a former spokesperson for the National Rifle Association. It's a critical debate you won't want to miss. The Free Press is honored to have partnered with the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression to present this debate. Head to thefire.org to learn more about this indispensable organization. The Constitution, the Militia, and Federal Overreach Guest: Rob Natelson Rob Natelson clarifies that the militia, or National Guard, is fundamentally a state force under gubernatorial command, though Congress can authorize the President to call it forth to execute federal laws, suppress insurrections, or repel invasions. Recent court cases concerning President Trump's use of the Guard to protect federal buildings hinged on whether its use was truly "necessary" under constitutional law. Natelson warns that the modern trend of federalizing the militia, including the Pentagon's order to form quick response units, directly contradicts the Constitution's original limits on federal authority. 1937 FDR MARYLAND

PREVIEW: Constitutional Debate on the Militia: Limiting Federal Power in Virginia Ratification Guest: Rob Natelson Constitutional scholar Rob Natelson discusses the militia debate during the Virginia ratification convention involving James Madison and Edmund Randolph. The core issue was limiting federal government power over the state militia and National Guard while securing gubernatorial authority. Natelson explains that the Founders assured voters that federal government power was restricted to prescribing discipline and training rules, but the actual training must be conducted by the states, reflecting the constitutional design to preserve state sovereignty over militia forces. 1789
