This month we're sharing a conversation on the implications of climate change in an aging society. HR (Rick) Moody, a scholar of philosophy and career-long leader in positive aging, pulled together a group of people on Zoom, asking neurologist, educator and creative Peter Whitehouse to join Full Ecology's Mary M Clare in leading a discussion focused on Elders and Climate Change.Dr. Moody is deeply committed to climate repair and has recently released a new book entitled, CLIMATE CHANGE IN AN AGING SOCIETY, published by Routledge Press. He also edits the weekly newsletter by the same name.Peter Whitehouse is a leader in Alzheimer's research, having established that the diagnosis cannot represent a stand-alone disease, but rather a complex combination of challenges that vary from person to person. He is also deeply involved in education. He and his wife have, for 25 years, been champions of three charter elementary schools in Cleveland, Ohio focused on bringing young learners and seniors together to enhance the learning of both. Central to the curricula of these schools is attention to the environment and climate challenges. Rick then invited Mary M Clare, the host of HOW IT LOOKS FROM HERE, to join as a second primary speaker. Rick was interested in Mary's work with Gary Ferguson on Full Ecology, together with her current work with what she calls “Inner Elderhood.” .Rick, Peter and Mary join with others who attended the Zoom session to discuss the salience and nuance of Elderhood in times of climate change. You'll hear new links between Elder years and the environment, as well as an enlivened exchange on the intersection of Climate degradation and ageism. You can learn more about Elderhood and Climate Change by checking out Rick Moody's newly released book, CLIMATE CHANGE IN AN AGING SOCIETY. If you're interested in receiving the weekly newsletter by the same name by going to this newsletter link. Learn more about Peter Whitehouse by tapping into a few interviews with him recorded on you tube videos. These, of course, are also in the show notes. And, keep listening to HILFH for more from Mary - you can also stay current by subscribing to the Full Ecology newsletter through the link on the Full Ecology website - www.fullecology.com.The bottom line here - there's always more to learn toward doing our parts as good stewards of the planet, no matter our age.RESOURCESDavid mentioned the veteran's organization that advocates for environmental justice and policies that protect communities, Common Defense.Tara mentioned the book about indigenous people of the Amazon entitled:
Join Joanna "Jojo" Sweatt, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and National Organizing Director of Common Defense, as she unveils the exciting partnership between Common Defense and Task Force Butler to combat extremism and defend democracy.
This week, Congress voted on whether or not to fast track a bill that would hand the Treasury Department the ability to strip any nonprofit of its 501 (c)(3) status by declaring it a "terrorist" supporting organization. This was set to fly trough easily UNTIL Trump got elected and enough Democrats and even one Republican said it was unwise to hand him that power. Don't breathe too easily, though - this bill can return next year, and wonderful nonprofits like Common Defense and Task Force Butler, who just joined forces to stop fascism's rise in America, could find themselves decimated by it. Next, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided she needed to get to the bottom of why there were so many split-ticket voters - in her case, voters who chose Trump for President and her for Congress. The results of AOC's Instagram survey are both dismaying and insightful, and inspired ME to ask around to see what insights I could find as well - we report on that. Finally, we briefly tell you about how scientists are closer to finding the key to how life began, by replicating simplified mitochondria in lab conditions. All this and more on TMI for Friday, November 15, 2024 – listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!

Independence Day is a great opportunity to reflect on a principle our nation was founded on: liberty. Polling shows that Americans greatly value their liberty but don't think the government is doing a good job protecting it. Meanwhile, younger generations aren't supportive of certain protections. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies.

Monday is Memorial Day. It's the one day set aside each year to remember US military members killed in the line of duty. Certainly worthy of the recognition. But we have a growing number of dead citizens who are victims of gun violence. It's time to recognize that growing group of bodies, which we are powerless to stop. Actually, we're not powerless. Unfortunately the people who were elected to represent us in Congress are the ones who've ceded their power, mostly to big money interests. It's time to take it all back. Today, the latest on the devastating news out of Uvalde, Texas. The director of the Texas Division of Public Service answered questions from the press in a 40-minute long press conference, trying to clean up the mess from the last police presser. He answered questions, but his answers are wholly unacceptable. The officer in charge made the call not to attempt to enter the classroom where the shooter was still terrorizing the remaining children he hadn't yet murdered. Today, in advance of Memorial Day, I'll speak with Naveed Shah, political director of Common Defense, a progressive veterans group who you should know about. On Monday, I'll do a special Memorial Day music show on our audio streams only. Listen at nicolesandler.com/listen-live, on Progressive Voice (progressivevoices.com) or my standalone player at nicolesandlerstream.com.

Morgan Zegers is joined by co-host Connor Clegg to discuss Hamilton's "The Powers Necessary to the Common Defense Further Considered." Federalist Paper No. 24 directly argues against the anti-federalists, who feared the federal government would have too much power, inevitably turning against their own people. In particular, the anti-federalist's main concern was the federalist's desire for a large standing army. While the federalists felt this would be necessary to ensure defense from foreign invaders, the anti-federalists feared oppressive centralized power. This podcast is a collection of speeches from the January 6, 2022 Vigil for Democracy in Tucson, Arizona. The event was a solemn commemoration of the January 6, 2021 insurrectionist attack on the US Capitol. Several current and former Arizona Legislators and two Arizona Congressman were highly involved in the Stop the Steal movement to disrupt the certification of the 2020 elections. Arizona is Ground Zero for voter suppression. Many of the elected officials who were involved in Stop the Steal and in the failed audit of the Maricopa County ballots are still in office. Watch out for more voter suppression bills in the coming session of the Arizona Legislature. On January 6, 2022, President Joe Biden said our democracy is still in peril. He's right. Pundits were left scratching their heads last fall when Foreign Policy reported that Bernie is the top recipient of donations from the military. But to supporters, it was no surprise: Bernie has a long record of fighting for the rights of US troops to health care, housing, and education - as well as keeping them out of endless, counterproductive wars in the first place. In this week's episode, Briahna sits down with Kyle Bibby, co-founder of the Black Veterans Project and an organizer with progressive vets group Common Defense, to talk about how time spent in military service can bring someone to the left. Kennedy as well as two more letters that were sent on behalf of the President from the Department of State and also theDepartment of Defense in Washington of which all were related to my earlier findings and analytic reports for uncovering the Soviet military deployment of Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles and also Medium-Range Ballistic Missiles armed with Thermonuclearand Nuclear Warheads capable of reaching most large cities in the continental United States from launch sites at Pinar del Rio Province located in northeastern Cuba without any advance warning for then killing 170 million Americans with additional ICBMs that would later be launched from Siberia in eastern Russia. Dear Mr. President: The current Venezuelan Missile Crisis at the Russian Air Force base on La Orchila Island is now far more serious than the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 or the Nicaraguan Missile Crisis of 1983 when Grenada was invaded by U.S. Armed Forces because it is already operational. Unlike the need to construct reinforced-concrete missile launch sites at Pinar del Rio Province in northwestern Cuba, which required more than a year, or the very long runways that were under construction on Grenada in the Caribbean Sea and at Punta Huete in Central America that were never finished during the Cold War, the very long airfields on La Orchila Island and also at Punta Huete have been completed and are now operational for accommodating the very large Antonov An-124 Ruslan air transports that can carry fully-integrated mobile missile launchers and Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles armed with Thermonuclear Warheads, which can be landed, unloaded and launched within a matter of minutes from Venezuela and Nicaragua at any targets within the continental United Stateswithout advance warning or an effective Missile Defense System in operation. However, if we as a nation should not become able to survive, in spite of all of your very outstanding accomplishments, you may be recorded in history as America’s weakest leader in a nation that will no longer exist. But you have a choice if only you are willing to be receptive to my advice instead of receiving it from your other sources. In the Preamble of our nation’s Constitution, the words “Provide for the Common Defense” are included. So whenever a foreign entity should threaten our nation and its people, we have the God-given right to intervene. However, if we were to intervene for economic or political reasons then such an intervention would be against the Constitution. Since 2009, on La Orchila Island, now a Russian Air Force base, located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean Sea under the jurisdiction of Venezuela, Russia began extending and widening the runway to nearly two miles in length for accommodating the Antonov An-124 Ruslan and other giant air transports planned for production in China and Russia. These giant transports can carry mobile launch systems and several Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles armed with Thermonuclear Warheads that can be launched within minutes of landing and being unloaded at La Orchila Island, Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea or Punta Huete, Nicaragua in Central America for accurately striking any region of the continental United States in a short period of time without any warning. During the time when you may have thought your Administration was enjoying a “honeymoon” relationship with the regime of Russian President Vladimir V. Perhaps the most diabolical move made by him has been the building of the very long airfields on La Orchila Island located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean Sea that is now a Russian Air Force base capable of landing the giant Antonov An-124 Ruslan air transport, which can carry integrated mobile launchers and manyIntermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles armed with Thermonuclear Warheads capable of accurately striking any region of the continentalUnited States from Punta Huete, Nicaragua in Central America. However, due to the limited flight range of the An-124, a re-fueling stopover on La Orchila Island is required to reach Punta Huete, which is why Grenada had been invaded by U.S. armed forces in 1963 for the very long runway then under construction. Now, La Orchila Island has replaced Grenada not only as a re-fueling stopover, but it also provides a strategic location for launching missiles directly at America in a very short period of time after landing and unloading mobile launchers. My guest today is Norman Ball. Norm graduated from Washington and Lee University and worked on the presidential campaign of independent John Anderson in 1980. After a career in the consulting business, he has returned to writing and politics. He has published two essay collections, The Frantic Force and How Can We Make Your Power More Comfortable, and writes for a number of political websites. He lives in the Washington DC area. Norman Ball refers to the Triffin Paradox and to a document entitled Providing for the Common Defense (pdf)), the assessment and recommendations of the National Defense Strategy Commission appointed by Congress. An article in Foreign Affairs outlines the idea of US tactical aggressive use of nuclear weapons as a viable strategy. That article is behind a paywall but is discussed from the Russian perspective in a blog post from the Russian Nuclear Forces Project. Other recent articles on US nuclear posturing include Martin Berger’s “Washington is Getting Dangerously Jumpy”, and the new study by the National Defense Strategy Commission that concludes the US needs to spend more money on the military despite a $716 billion American defense budget this year, which is four times the size of China’s and more than 10 times that of Russia. The Chris Hedges interview with Ralph Nader can be found here. A brief explanation of Michael Glennon’s idea of the Trumanite Network can be found on Wikipedia. The article that led me to Norman is entitled The Life of the Party Has Left. You can find more articles by Norm on http://thesaker.is and other websites. For more information on the Triffin Paradox and its relation to US foreign policy, see Norman Ball's essay on the Triffin Paradox on his website. While Ball’s views are outside the progressive framework, they are quite intriguing and give those of us engaged in anti-imperialist and anti-war work something useful to chew on.

One intention the framers had when creating the U.S. Constitution was to “provide for the common defense.” But who shoulders that duty has not always been so clear.

Progressives have long used “general welfare” as an “anything and everything” clause to justify all kinds of unconstitutional overreach, from federal meddling in education to national healthcare. The right generally scoffs at this bastardization of the Constitution – and rightly so. But more and more, I’m hearing conservatives and Republicans use the term “provide for the common defense” in the exact same way. They essentially turned these words into a right-wing version of the general welfare clause. In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I explain why neither phrase justifies expansive federal power.

We the People ordained and established the Constitution in order to provide "for the common defense." In doing so, the debate was sparked over what was needed for that defense, and whether or not there any actual threats to the United States. How would the power of taxation, given to the proposed new government, be an great asset to provide for such a common defense? And ultimately, who decides what are the national security interests of the nation?
