Send us a textToday's episode is my conversation about the 1929 film Hallelujah. I'm joined by Jonathan Hammond, film director who has multiple shorts on the festival circuit this fall. We talk about many of the problems of the film even though it does include an all African American cast, some interesting images of what life was like at the time in the South, whether or not the film qualifies as a "musical" as we would define it today, and what representation looks like in film both in the past and today. You can watch Hallelujah on YouTube and be sure to give Jonathan a follow on Instagram @jonohamm.Other films mentioned in this episode include:The Crowd directed by King VidorWeary River directed by Frank LloydBrokeback Mountain directed by Ang LeeThe Birth of a Nation directed by D. We've celebrated the promise of AI: the speed, the scale, the potential. But with every new advance comes a growing unease. In this episode, we explore the cognitive dissonance consumers and healthcare leaders are feeling as AI tools outpace ethics, regulation, and even our own understanding. Deepfakes, patient privacy concerns, and the emotional toll of synthetic content are all adding to the discomfort and raising urgent questions. We also dive into bold brand reactions to Taylor Swift's engagement and a heartfelt farewell to co-host Desirée Duncan.Subscribe to The No Normal Rewind, our newsletter featuring a mashup of the boldest ideas, sharpest takes, and most rewind-worthy moments from our podcast — right here.

Global Asias: Tactics & Theories is the inaugural volume in an exciting new series that explores critical concerns animating Global Asias scholarship. It challenges the silos of academic knowledge formation that currently make legible and organize the study of Asia and its multiple diasporas. Transits, Indigeneity, Epistemology, Language, and A/Geography: These keywords highlight potential overlaps and points of disagreement between area studies, ethnic studies, and diaspora studies. Through an inventive approach and structure, the book exemplifies how the collaborative ethos of Global Asias praxis can catalyze new methods of scholarship and pedagogy—and create innovative models of academic knowledge-production. The editors offer a substantive overview of the emergent multidisciplinary field of Global Asias followed by a set of collaboratively authored research forums and pedagogical materials by a varied group of scholars working across ranks, disciplines, fields, geographies, and languages. Global Asias: Tactics & Theories will be an indispensable guide for anyone interested in learning more about this emerging field. It is crafted to provide resources for a wide range of readers: researchers, teachers, students, and administrators. The diversity and originality of the materials and approaches reflect a broad understanding of scholarly work that resists mastery by building structures of intellectual experimentation that embrace disagreement and differences. Readers will discover provocative conversations that redefine what it means to work in, at, for, and around Global Asias—not as a settled object of knowledge but a dynamic praxis of engagement. The volume is edited by Tina Chen and Charlotte Eubanks, with contributions by Omer Aijazi, Jenny Chio, Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi, Neelima Jeychandran, Youngoh Jung, Junyoung Verónica Kim, Fiona Lee, Jerry Won Lee, Andrew Way Leong, Diego Javier Luis, Naveen Minai, Alexander Murphy, Carla Nappi, Kyle Shernuk, Erin Suzuki, Desirée Valadares, Jini Kim Watson, and Shaolu Yu. Song: I Am Blessed Music by: Desirée Dawson Notes: Ok, so there's a bit of mess in this episode -- the reprise happens twice, because I couldn't get my Loopy app to turn off when I wanted it to -- but we just get to sing it again, so it turns into a good thing! Desirée's song really helps me remember how blessed I am, with my mess, my stress -- the way it all opens my heart, like a treasure chest. Great body percussion part for all you rhythm-hungry folk, plus oohs for the Supremes fans. I take some time picking it apart so you can find some of the intricacies... Songwriter Info: As a recording artist, songwriter, producer, facilitator, and yoga teacher, Desirée is driven by a passion for collective liberation. She is a two time SXSW music video winner and was nominated for a Juno Award for best adult contemporary album of the year in 2022. She has had multiple viral moments on TikTok and Instagram with her most popular video being for her song I Am Blessed. With her powerful voice as her main instrument, Desirée often accompanies it with her baritone ukulele, body percussion and other musicians. She has a passion for harmonizing and singing with others. She blends folk, soul, pop, Americana, and old-time country influences into her creations, though she often labels her music as 'singer-songwriter' for simplicity. Sharing Info: The song is free to share in oral tradition groups, but please contact Desirée for recording and/or performing permission. Desirée says, "Donations are encouraged and welcome but I do not want money to be a barrier for people to share and learn the song."
