(Mark 5:1-20) As we continue our journey through Mark's Gospel looking at the Works, Words and Ways of Jesus we encounter a situation where Jesus is not afraid to reach out to him in love. Today, Gordon unpacks what it looks like to conquer fear.
This podcast offers a reflection of the encounter Jesus had with the Gadarene Demoniac as recorded in Luke chapter 8. Jesus asked him and us, "What is your name?" "The soul wants to tell us the truth about ourselves." - Parker Palmer

Part 4 If you were tasked with answering the question, “…how do I know if I have a demon”? How would you respond? In the case of the Gadarene Demoniac, you wouldn't even need to be a Christian to spot something was seriously wrong with the man. “Normal” people don't live naked among the tombs, screaming and cutting themselves with stones. “Normal” people don't speak in the second person plural! Admittedly, this is an extreme case, but I want to submit, those in the Bible possessed with demons are known to be, not only by themselves but by those coming into contact with them. Why do I take the time to point out the patently obvious? Those within the deliverance movement would have us understand that the vast majority of believers in Jesus have demons in them, but the problem is, they know it not! If this is the case, the question that follows is, how is one to identify whether or not they have a demon from which they need deliverance? It is this question that is the focus of this fourth teaching part. Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/4_Identifying_the_Demons.pdf

However, there are other people that are more than difficult, they are what I refer to as the extreme cases. Today I spoke about the Gadarene Demoniac. We do not know his real name, it was never made known to us. We only know from the word that he was like a ravenous, violent, wild beast of a man. He was naked and lived in a graveyard, no doubt, completely filthy and vile. No doubt a terrifying man. He was always roaming around those graves and mountains, crying and cutting himself with stones. Which magnifies his torment. We read that men tried to control him with chains and fetters, but he broke them off of himself. This is a very clear understanding that the power of Satan was in him, controlled and occupied him. We get such a horrid, devastating picture of the worst of the depravity of man in this account. We know this man had a home, friends and a family. But they too got to the sad point where they gave up on him. No doubt he was loved. Perhaps you know someone like this man. A person whom you love but is so far gone that you are exhausted and your heart is crushed. That your thousands of prayers, and millions of tears have not made any difference. This story is more than just a story. It was purposely recorded for you and me, and for all time to show that Jesus has conquered Satan and his cruel kingdom forever. To show you that what He did for this tormented, to-far-gone man, He will do for your loved one too. He hears you. You see a day came where Jesus went to that tormented, miserable, lost man. I believe our Father in heaven saw the millions of tears shed by those closest to him, and was moved by them. So He sent His Son to heal that man, restore him and give him a peaceful, beautiful life. And not only that, but Jesus brought healing to the hearts of his family and friends, and became a great evangelist. I believe He sees your tears too, just like those who loved that man. And Jesus will go to that one person whom you feel is past help too. He told us to pray, and why would God tell us to pray and not answer? He made it clear that He would, and He will do it. Your loved one, is under the bondage and control of those same demonic spirits, and that same Lord will destroy their hold too. Have faith in God, in His Son. It is His will and pleasure to destroy the works of the devil to those who cry to Him. He means to do it. His name is Faithful. He will have the last word as the lover of their souls. "We are foolish to expect to serve God without opposition: the more zealous we are, the more sure are we to be assailed... Glory be to God, we know the end of the war. The great dragon shall be cast out and for ever destroyed, while Jesus and they who are with him shall receive the crown. Let us sharpen our swords to-night, and pray the Holy Spirit to nerve our arms for the conflict. Never battle so important, never crown so glorious. Every man to his post, ye warriors of the cross, and may the Lord tread Satan under your feet shortly!" ~Charles Spurgeon --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joanie-stahl/support

Mark 5:1-20 The Gadarene Demoniac
We must encounter *everything* in our lives spiritually, or else we may miss a life-changing moment. We discuss two moments in the life of the people of the Gadarenes and the Monk-Martyr James (+Nov 1,1520). Their reaction to them was completely different. The people of the Gadarenes had no idea that they turned down an opportunity to have the light live within them. After a chance conversation, which he thought about spiritually, James became a vessel of light.

The moment Jesus approached a man possessed by a legion of demons, they recognized Him as the "Son of the Most High God" (Mark 5:7). Continuing his exposition of the gospel of Mark, today R.C. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marvelled. (Mark 5:1–20)

The story of the Gadarene Demoniac in Luke 8 provokes three questions which are important for us to ask today.
In this message, Phil is speaking from Mark 5 ; the story of the Gadarene Demoniac. A powerful encounter with Jesus transforms this man's life completely as he is delivered from a legion of demons & totally set free. With such a powerful testimony, Jesus sends him back to his region to share the story of all God has done for him. Drawing on personal testimony, Phil talks about his own experiences of seeing the power of God set people free, & the fruit that followed the breakthrough.

1. A Terrible Dominion--2. A Sovereign Liberation--3. An Important Lesson
Do you need to clear a room? Try suggesting a discussion on Satan and demons… people will clear out in a hurry. Is such discomfort justified? Do demons exist? Is Satan a real being? Jesus had frequent encounters with evil spirits, but none more dramatic and intense than with a man in a remote area who called himself “Legion.” ...

Sometimes our lives are in such chaos and darkness it is hard to believe God is in control and is loving us and caring for us. Join Michael as he dramatically recounts the story of the Gadarene Demoniac told in Mark 5:1-20, unlikely though it would seem, to demonstrate God’s providence in our lives.
The Church brings us the story of the Gadarene Demoniac because it wants us to see ourselves in this man—our own fundamental insanity as fallen human beings.
The Gadarene Demoniac was possessed by a "Legion" of demons. His spirit was so fractured and divided that he was not only his own worst enemy, but he was a threat to all around him.

The Gadarene Demoniac had been reduced to an animal existence by his misuse of his freedom. Jesus comes and heals him and he is finally in his right mind. Are you in your right mind?

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: I lo am with you alway, even unto the end of the world, Amen,” -- Matthew 28:18:20. The longest, most remarkable deliverance occurs in Gerassa, shortly after Jesus stilled the storm. The man is described as being insane, unable to control himself bent on self-torment. Legion, the Gadarene Demoniac is shown in three scriptures; Mark 5:2-20; Matthew 8: 28-34; Luke 8-26-39.
