SPRINGER, NM: THE GREAT AMERICA OF 1882-1897 Springer, a town of about a thousand residents in far northern New Mexico, some sixty miles south of the Colorado state line, seems like a small and quiet place where not much happens. Yet, it has a certain charm that continues to attract tourists and retirees. Much of this has to do with a downtown of stately and elegant buildings, in particular the prominent two-story brick courthouse, which speak to a time when the town was more prominent, and had a central role in some of the most momentous events of the nineteenth century southwest. Springer was the seat of Colfax County in 1882-1897, in the midst of one of the most bitter and violent conflicts of the era. The Colfax County War pitted Hispano and Anglo settlers against the Maxwell Grant and Railroad Company. The area was included in an enormous land grant dating back to Mexican times, which was acquired by the first of a series of groups of foreign investors in 1870. Conflict arose when the new owners attempted to evict the settlers, who were suddenly seen as squatters, even though they themselves understood that they had the right to be there. The Utes and Jicarilla Apaches whose tenure predated everybody else, were not part of the discussion. The conflict attracted the attention of the Santa Fe Ring, a powerful clique of attorneys and real-estate investors who controlled the Territory, who sided with the Company, bringing the full force of the Government, including the Army, to bear on the settlers. The County Seat was moved to Springer 1882 from a previous location because the railroad and the Company moved its headquarters and the leadership there was seen as more favorable to the Ring. Factional violence continued to plague the County. One of the most spectacular confrontations occurred in March, 1885, when Sheriff's deputies loyal to the Company faced a large party of armed settlers led by future U.S. Congressman George Curry on the courthouse lawn in Springer, leaving two settlers dead. While the conflict seems the stuff of cinema, a movie of the feud would be disappointing. Though figures like legendary gunfighter Clay Allison fell in with the settlers, there was no man on a white horse riding in to lead the humble sodbusters to victory over the villainous corporation. In fact, the Company ultimately won, their ownership of the land confirmed by an 1887 Supreme Court case. Many of the settlers, out-gunned and with no legal recourse, moved on. By 1897, the railroad had moved its operations to Raton, some forty miles away, and nearby coal mines there had attracted investment and settlers. Furthermore, the local leadership was largely favorable to the Company. Now out-voted, Springer lost the county seat after a bitter political fight. Some historians say that Springer went into “decline” after losing the seat, but in a southwest littered with ghost towns this does not seem fair. Springer remained a small but vital community. Arguably, the fact that it no longer attracts the attention that it did during its heyday, when it was the focus for major historical events, might be the reason why it retains a picturesque downtown that recalls a colorful past. -Tom Prezelski, Resident Historian

Smith came to Hattiesburg as a young attorney in 1908. In this interview, conducted on June 18, 1971, Smith shares his memories growing up in North Georgia. As the son of a Methodist minister, Smith was taught to avoid certain groups and activities. He recalls how his mother found him at a party one night on the Chattahoochee River. Even though Smith’s family did not have a lot of money, he was determined to attend law school. He recounts how a chance reunion with a childhood friend provided the means to pay his tuition. While attending law school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Smith became friends with Hattiesburg native, George Curry. Smith moved to Hattiesburg with his classmate to establish a law firm in 1908. He shares his initial impressions of the town and the story of how he met his future wife, Lorraine McInnis. Jim Roth has coached the Southern Columbia High School football team in Catawissa, Pennsylvania for the past 36 years. In that time, Roth has led the Tigers to a state record 10 state championships. He's currently second place on the all-time wins list in Pennsylvania behind the late, great George Curry. What's Roth up to during the pandemic? How did he fall in love with football? How has he built and established a winning culture for nearly four decades after taking over a program that was in the basement when he arrived? Is the 2019 team the best he's ever coached? We tackle that and much more.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Mercifully, 2016 cocludes. Gus T. Renegade anticipated this would be an atrocious 12 months on the plantation. The passing of Dr. Afeni Shakur, Gwen Ifill, Natalie Cole, Muhammad Ali, Prince, George Curry, Phife Dawg, Dr. Delbert Blair, Maurice White, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and numerous others made for a year of crushing loss. However, White Supremacists don't pause for sorrow or Christmas. In fact, a White EMT worker, Steve Sampson, used the holiday season to concoct a lie about black hoodlums looting his presents. He was eventually arrested for making a false report. And when Whites weren't lying, they put in overtime to get black people in the theaters. Denzel Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer confiscated the silver screen with August Wilson's Fences and Hidden Figures - based on black female geniuses who worked for NASA and helped Whites invade space. Both features explicitly address Racism. But, the constructive value of both movies is questionable. Fences delivers a hefty heap of black disfunction, while Hidden Figures glorifies helping Whitefolks - with some of the very cast from the 2011 hit,The Help. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p
The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Niyana Rasayon. A behavioral neuroscientist, neuropsychologist, professor, author and father, Dr. Rasayon is also a North Carolina A&T alumnus and one of our listeners' favorite guests. We've previously examined his published work, including The Awakening: OMG The President Is Black and Reality Check: A Manuel for the Hue-Man Octahedron & The Mystery of Melain. Dr. Rasayon was gracious enough to step away from the yuletide festivities to review the gruesome year of 2016. Countless black people who devoted their existence to healing black people and confronting White Supremacy did not see this year's conclusion. Prince, Muhammad Ali, George Curry, Natalie Cole, Phife Dawg, Gwen Ifill, Maurice White, Dr. Delbert Blair, Dr. Afeni Shakur, Dr. Sebi, and Dr. Frances Cress Welsing all transitioned this year. President Barack Obama is still alive, but he will not occupy the Oval Office in 2017. We'll ask Dr. Rasayon how President-elect Trump impacts how we understand Pres. Obama's tenure as Commander In Chief. We'll also review the federal conviction of Dylann Storm Roof. The White Terrorist slaughtered nine black worshipers - including State Senator Rev. Clementa Pinckney, after having methodically planned the attack for months. Now, many White and non-white people are begging for this Racist's White life to be spared. Curry, former editor of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and Emerge magazine, died August 20th at the age of 69. Alice Jervay Thatch recounted his relentless commitment to counter-racism. "George Curry was a part of NNPAâ??s effort to gain pardons for the Wilmington Ten. On the day NNPA announced at the National Press Club our intent to secure those pardons, George interviewed Wilmington Ten leader Dr. Ben Chavis onstage. It brought tears to our eyes, including Benâ??s. Later, Ben had to admit that this was the most emotional interview he had experienced and the first time he had cried in public!"
