What a CreepThe Super Bowl's Big Wardrobe MalfunctionSeason 28, Episode 4It was the wardrobe malfunction seen around the world. We're going to talk about the infamous 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show. The entire country lost their collective mind because they got a glimpse of Janet Jackson's boob for less than a second during what they like to pretend is a family-friendly cultural event. In reality, we're watching a brutal sport in which men are getting concussions for our entertainment, sandwiched in between commercials for booze and boner pills. Was it a planned stunt? Was it an accident? Does it really matter? Some people just used it as an opportunity to shit on Janet Jackson 24/7, and others used it as an opportunity to get on their soapbox to disingenuously ask, “Won't someone think of the children.” Sources for this episodeDeadspinLos Angeles Times“The New York Times Presents: Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson”NPRRolling StoneRolling StoneWikipediaNon-Creepy American Football Charities:USA Football.com: USA Football believes in the passion, intensity, joy, confidence, and sense of community football brings to those who play, coach, and love it. Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as the manager of the United States Men's National Team. After the disastrous Copa America run, the USMNT fired Berhalter and needed to find a suitable replacement. Pochettino is the best choice despite his lack of experience managing a national team. His experience in Europe speaks for itself, so the decision to go with Pochettino is the right one. Find Into The Net F.C. ANYWHERE YOU GET YOUR PODCAST! Jamie Riley is the Chief Operating Officer at USA Football. In keeping with our focus on professional sports organizations in our community, Jamie came by the studio to tell us about all the amazing things happening with football at the Olympic level and at the grassroots - not the kind you watch on Sunday - in light of their notably increased participation across the country. Jamie also described her experiences as a female executive in arguably one of the most male-dominated of sports. Particularly in light of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics and the USA Swimming trials happening this summer in Indianapolis, Jamie shed some light and exciting news on the evolution of flag football for all amongst the Olympic Games.
"I'm not going to waste anymore exhausation trying to convince you of something, that I already know" - Camryn Spina, USA Football & D1 Cheerleader. Camryn Spina works for USA Football in the High Performance and National Team Operations. Flag Football has recently been announced as an Olympic sport. This has made for an exciting & intense time for Cam as the entire organization works towards the LA 2028 Olympic Games where it will be introduced. Cam took a leap of faith by pursuing an internship with the powerhouse organization - after already successfully working full-time in Sport Operations & Marketing roles for a couple years - but this leap paid off as she is now the eager to spread her message about 'trusting the process.' Last year Cam received a lot of attention after a TikTok blew up in which she detailed an insane job-relocation-gone-wrong personal story that got picked up by Business Insider, UNILAD, The Independent, and more. She handled all the attention with ease of course, having been a D1 Athlete Cheerleader at Rutgers her entire collegiate career. It is a story that is old as long as athletic training has been a profession. An injury playing a sport leads to interest in athletic training and morphs into a storied career. That was what happened to Dave Weikel his junior year in high school when a dislocated shoulder while playing football lead to a chance meeting with a PT/ATC that peaked his interest in athletic training. When searching for schools with athletic training education programs he found a fit at Ball State and worked his way into a wild ride with the 1989-1990 Sweet Sixteen Men's basketball team as a student athletic trainer. Women's track, Football, and Men's Volleyball were all clinical sport assignments that Dave worked student AT while at Ball State. He worked as a student AT intern with the Indianapolis Colts for two years, the second as the 6 month intern. With a dream of working in the NFL but not the availability of open positions in the mid 1990's he decided to take an outreach position first in Muncie, IN and then in Niles, MI. He found that working with secondary school athletes was as enjoyable as working with professional athletes. After a short stent with Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, IN, Dave moved on to St Vincent's Sports Performance. This provided him with the opportunity to begin working with USA Football as the Head Athletic Trainer. A role that he currently holds today. He has traveled all over the world for different USA Football events and represented the profession of athletic training on a world stage in this role. In 2020 he became the Manager of Sports Medicine for Franciscan Health, Indianapolis, IN. He oversees the athletic trainers for 22 schools and 1 university in the Indianapolis area. Dave was the host athletic trainer at the Lucas Oil Stadium Venue for the 2021 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. He was a panelist 2023 NATA youth sports safety summit and is a in-demand speaker for youth football safety. Currently he is a medical observer for Ball State University Football games. Dave was inducted to the Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor in 2022. He resides in Westfield, IN with his wife Jennifer and their two children.

Flag football being named to the 2028 Olympic program earlier this year completed an impressive rise for the sport. Having the sport in the Los Angeles Games is a massive win for the NFL in broadening its global reach. On the IOC's part, having the NFL promoting the Olympics does the same in expanding its reach and marketing to fans of a sport who may have never bothered with the Games in the past. And having gender equality in flag football is a big reason why the IOC was open to the idea of the sport being on the program; more than half a dozen states have sanctioned girls' flag football as a varsity sport. We talked with USA Football Chief Executive Officer and President Scott Hallenbeck about the sport's inclusion into the Olympics, its rise among girls and female participants, and much more about the sport's global reach.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As a child growing up in Gibsonville, N.C., Torry Holt occasionally pulled tobacco for $5 an hour. Holt would later grow up to make millions in the NFL after starring at N.C. State, where the wide receiver was named the ACC's Player of the Year in 1998. Our interview subject this week for “Sports Legends of the Carolinas,” Holt once scored five touchdowns in a single game for the Wolfpack against Florida State. Following an All-American senior season at N.C. State, he was drafted No. 6 overall by the St. Louis Rams in 1999. Holt quickly won a Super Bowl with the Rams as a rookie and became an essential part of an offense quarterbacked by Kurt Warner and known as “The Greatest Show on Turf.” He made the Pro Bowl seven times and had six consecutive seasons of 1,300 or more receiving yards. Now 47, Holt has moved back to the Raleigh area. There, he and his brother Terrence, also a former NFL player, run Holt Brothers Inc., and are involved in a variety of business and philanthropic ventures, including a successful construction company and a charitable foundation that supports children who have a parent with cancer. This conversation was conducted while Holt was visiting Charlotte, serving in his role as an NFL global flag football ambassador for a USA Football event. The interview is edited for clarity and brevity. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Loumay Alesali, Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Today's podcast features USA Football senior manager of education and training, Andy Ryland. Andy has been with USA Football since 2010, has consulted with programs at every level of competition, and is widely recognized as a foremost expert on developing the fundamentals necessary for a successful shoulder tackle, as well as the developmental, and skill building process for athletes. He previously appeared on episode 170 speaking on a “humans first”, “athletes second”, “specialists third” approach to athlete development. In the process of developing athletes, it is easy to compartmentalize training components, ultimately to a fault in the overall process. If we are working in a sport or skill building capacity with athletes, we should have a basic understanding of their physical capacities and capabilities, as well as how training adaptation and specificity work. If we are working on strength and more base level movement components with athletes, we should have a handle on their needed skills and tactics on the field. Ultimately, the more situations we can coach in, the more ages, and sports we work with, the better our overall intuition gets on the process of teaching skills, and guiding athletes to their highest potential. Andy Ryland has a deep understanding the developmental process that players need to succeed in their sport. On today's episode, Andy digs into key points on the art of athletic skill building. A primary part of this is how he runs the “whole-part-whole” system, which can be adapted to more global, or strength based skills. In sports like rugby and American football there is the contact paradox. Players are bigger and collision forces continue to increase. However the amount contact allowed in training continues to decrease. So how do we prepare for something we cannot train much? Coach Andy Ryland has a few ideas. On this week's podcast he discusses the skills involved in contact, and how to best physically prepare for them off the field. For more information on this topic, read the complete show notes at: https://www.hmmrmedia.com/2022/04/hmmr-podcast-episode-270-prepare-for-contact-with-andy-ryland/ » Support the show: join HMMR PLUS to get full access to our coaching resources. This month's site theme is preparing for contact, so keep an eye out for more on the topic in the coming weeks. You can find more information about training for field sports and contact sports here. To learn more from Ryland, you can follow him on Instagram (@adrcoachdevelopment) and Twitter (@ADRCoachDev). You can learn more about USA Football's courses and certifications on a variety of topics, including contact, on their website. One of Ryland's tackling presentations is also up on YouTube. We referenced the 2014 video posted by the Seattle Seahawks about their approach to tackling which was heavily influence by rugby and sparked a revolution in how coaches think about tackling. #048. Coach Wayne Voorhees and I have a unique relationship. Wayne was the Head Football Coach at Legacy HS in 2016, and was looking to travel to California to play a football game. The organization he was connected to found me looking for a game the very same week, and we set up the contest. We had a great game, right down to the wire. Upon returning home after the trip, Coach Voorhees and the team were involved in a fatal bus crash that left the driver dead, and the staff very badly injured. After hearing about the crash, I was asked by a close friend if I wanted to go out to Boulder, Colorado and visit the coaching staff and their families. We did, and it's a trip I will never forget. Coach Voorhees and his coaches survived the crashed and are recovering to this day. Coach Voorhees has since moved on in his career to another high school. In this episode, he describes that fateful day.Coach Voorhees has had many experiences during his football coaching career, and is an "expert" in opening schools. Listen to how a coach might get some much needed tips if he were to ever open a high school from a guy who has done it multiple times.Coach Voorhees on TwitterRiverdale Football in Instagram!Teacher/Head Football CoachRiverdale Ridge High SchoolFeb 2018 - Present4 years 2 monthsBrighton, ColoradoRegional Master TrainerUSA FootballMar 2013 - Present "Heads Up Football"Help youth leagues implement the Heads Up Football program endorsed by USA Football.MemberDenver Broncos Youth Task Force2003 - PresentGreater Denver AreaTeacher/Head Football CoachLegacy HSJul 2000 - Jun 2018Head Coach for the Broncos 7 on 7 TeamNFL National 7 on 7 Tournament2005 - 2012

Gilbert is a long-time advisor to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Coach Education Department and primary coach education consultant for USA Football. Specific to hockey, he has served as an advisor to leading hockey organizations and coaching staffs around the world, including USA Hockey, Hockey Canada, IIHF, NHL/NHLPA, WHL, and USHL. Most recently, Gilbert served as the mental performance coach for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medal-winning Canadian women's softball team. Wade has literally written the book on Coaching Better Every Season - here are some of the key takeaways from the episode: There is no excuses for coaches not to be learning (don't let your insecurities, pride, or ego get in the way) Awaken to the people side of coaching (people first, sport second) The essence of coaching is navigating the moments Best practices versus best principles (personalize the principles to your situation) Each season is a journey and your job is to build a sturdy ship - there will be storms, but with a sturdy ship you will be okay The bottom line is that as a coach you might not be able to fully control winning, but you can control the experience your team has. Safe to say, Wade is an advocate in the fight against the ‘old school' coaching mentality and you too can join us by sharing with your fellow coaches!
