"Still refuse to sell my spirit to eat..." - Phonte A lot of midtempo business this month, as we combine the remembrance of Biggie Smalls and Phife Dawg with some era-appropriate classics, a few obscurities, and then blend in some brand new material that shows how the true artistry of the culture continues to flourish! I just finished adding all the links into the show notes and then my veteran computer hung...so have tried to replace them all! Besides those, here's my Instagram post on the closing of the Hip Hop Chip Shop, which I mentioned on the episode...it'll be much missed. Mastodon : @airadam@mastodon.me.uk Twitch : @airadam13

This audio tour from Kansas City, Missouri's Vine Street Brewing was originally shared with our Patreon audience last year. We decided to share here on the main feed for two reasons. One, our recent experience with Autonomous Society Brewpub's Saturday Night Spin honoring Phife Dawg was a blast. We brewed a small batch just for the event that the crowd really enjoyed. Also, we wanted to interest you in supporting what we do at Patreon. Enjoy the audio tour, Sounds Around Hip Hops Hooray.  Special thanks to Jeff and Greg for their support, Vine Street Brewing, Funkytown Brewing, Friction Brewing, Red Crow Brewing, and all who attended and shared on the podcast.

Here we go, yo! It's been a while since this podcast has covered either a hip-hop album or a jazz album — so this week, we're doing both at once! A Tribe Called Quest formed in the late ‘80s in the New York City neighborhood of St. Albans, Queens, which was home to some of the giants of jazz, blues, and funk, and was a hotbed of musical activity in the years when hip-hop was simmering into existence. On Tribe's 1991 album The Low End Theory, members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed pay tribute to this rich musical legacy with an album that charted a new path for hip-hop by exploring its roots in bebop, hard bop, post-bop, all the other bops, and more. This album isn't just a classic – it's one of the sacred texts of the hip-hop genre, and it helped Rich get into jazz after years of failed attempts. So if you're a jazz aficionado who's on the fence about hip-hop, or vice versa, we invite you to crank up the bass and check the (discord and) rhime with us. Just watch out for the dungeon dragon!Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabio, Phil MaddoxComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/149-a-tribe-called-quest-the-low-end-theory-1991Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

When we say bonified classic albums, this week's album is what we mean. We're talking about the sophomore release from A Tribe Called Quest, titled The Low End Theory. Following their successful debut in 1990, A Tribe stormed back on the scene in 1991 with an LP for the ages, with most production handled by member Q-Tip. The beats were darker, jazzier, and heavier on the bass. Not only were the beats leveled up, the lyrics were as well from rappers Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Phife's presence was notably stronger on this project as opposed to their debut, showing not only his emergence in the group but as an mc in general. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=LQQJ4 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=8mgvT4ULfGo&_r=1

People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm". The crew reviews A Tribe Called Quest's classic third album Midnight Marauders as it turns 30. Off the heels of their groundbreaking sophomore debut, 1991's The Low End Theory, the group rebounded to put through what many to believe to be their most cohesive work yet. After famously making the low end of bass their calling card and backdrop of the jazz sampled beats, the momentum continued with group member Q-Tip working with legendary engineer Bob Power to leave the resonant noise from their samples, creating a grittier and harder sound.Over 14 tracks, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg expertly spit and trade clever, biting and, at times, fun and hilarious bars. The album spawned two classic singles which stand out as the groups best: "Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation", both which received heavy radio play and still are wildly popular today. 30 years later, this album is marked as a crown jewel of a trilogy of Tribe's first three albums and has been noted a keen sonic influence to the groups successors--in spirit and practiceVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders" Turns 30 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/a-tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-album-anniversaryThe Daily Beat: 30 Years Ago, A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight " Changed Hip-Hophttps://www.thedailybeast.com/a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-turns-30The Grio: Symphonic Sampling: A Tribe Called Quest's 'Midnight Marauders" and Wu-Tang Clan's 'Enter the Wu-Tang"https://thegrio.com/2023/11/09/symphonic-sampling-a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-and-wu-tang-clans-enter-the-wu-tang/HipHopDX: A Tribe Called Quest Celebrates 30 Years of 'Midnight Marauders" with New Merchhttps://hiphopdx.com/news/tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-30th-anniversary-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

To Jelani Cobb, reading, writing, and education are inherently acts of empowerment, and sometimes even ones of defiance. A staff writer at The New Yorker since 2015 and recently appointed the dean of Columbia Journalism School, where he has been on the faculty since 2016, Cobb has written on subjects ranging from the power of Dave Chappelle's comedy, to the vital lessons of Martin Luther King Jr., to Donald Trump as a rapper. Cobb is also the author of the books The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress (2010) and To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic (2007). Given the precarious moment we're in when it comes to truth and the future of not just journalism, but democracy itself, he is unquestionably one of the most essential writers, historians, and thinkers of our time. On this week's episode of Time Sensitive, Cobb talks about timing and flow in hip-hop, why being a “first Black” leader in any high-profile profession is like “doing a high-wire act without a net,” and his belief that the future of journalism will include greater transparency around how a story gets made.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes: [03:39] DJ Kool Herc[03:49] “Hip-Hop at Fifty: An Elegy”[03:56] To the Break of Dawn[08:05] August Wilson[09:13] Skip James[27:10] Run-D.M.C.[27:16] LL Cool J[27:24] Q-Tip[27:25] Phife Dawg[27:27] Salt-N-Pepa[27:41] Kool G Rap[27:45] Pharoahe Monch[37:17] Queens Public Library[39:27] Adell Patton[41:18] Elizabeth Clark-Lewis[43:06] David Carr[43:23] Ta-Nehisi Coates[49:58] The Devil and Dave Chappelle: And Other Essays[53:21] “Trayvon Martin and the Parameters of Hope”[59:14] “Postscript: Rodney King, 1965-2012”[59:46] “Alvin Bragg, Donald Trump, and the Pursuit of Low-Level Crimes”[01:02:21] Between the World and Me[01:03:51] Columbia Journalism School

Welp, I first want to thank everyone who has stuck with me since I began this series back in 08', I really appreciate you all listening in, sharing the mixes, and keeping me going on this Good Music Movement that started after I was tired of playing mainstream. This mix was a doozy, but here we are! (Live drums are hard to mix to) Next up for the rest of the year will be my new series based on joints I used to play in the club back in the day before it got rowdy after 11:30 pm. It's a Happy Hour series of R&B cuts you're familiar with, B-Sides, and of course Remixes, you couldn't get anywhere else but visiting the club right after work on a Thursday (Ladies' Night), Friday, and Saturday night too. Soulful and Afro-House music will also be uploaded since Chocolate Soul is gearing up for another run in D.C. Maryland (Hyattsville as well), for the House on the Waterfront Weekender in Mid-August 11th-13th. Hope to see you there!I hope you enjoy what you hear, and if you would like to book Chocolate Soul to perform, just hit me up at djsmoove1967@gmail.com or text at 614 949 4632 and we'll make it happen. Here are the artists/producers who made this mix possible: Had to start off with Moonchild since they are coming in April!; Kadeem Tyrell; Olu; Debra Bond (Tall Black Guy remix); Zo! & Tall Black Guy ft Darien Brockington, Muhsinah, & Phonte; Common & Tom Misch; Maverick Soul; Phife Dawg ft. The cause, the symptoms and how can you turn it around.  The team chops it up with a HR heavyweight who once fired 100 people in 8 hours. He breaks down the mistakes we make in job interviews and what you should be asking for to put your best foot forward.  Plus – tips for negotiating a salary that can help you tactfully and confidently ask for what you want, including a company car. He also breaks down what companies get right (and wrong) about diversifying their work force.  An impromptu Rod's Relationship Fair is on deck – and the issues revolve around a pastor who met a woman at work and it looks like she is not interested in being his first lady.  How much would your city have to pay you to move to a rural area? The city of Tokyo has started the bidding at $8,000.   The newest member of the Roy's Job Fair two-timer club, DJ Rasta Root, producer and former manager of the late Phife Dawg and A Tribe Called Quest, breaks down the making of Phife's posthumous album Forever. Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic. This is our Tame One Tribute. This is certainly an in depth interview that delves deep into the themes, features and production about the new EP "HEIR" but also touches on some other meaningful and impactful contributions of these artists.
