George McEncroe is a tech entrepreneur, writer, standup comedian, educator, and force of nature. The single mother of four hates orthodoxies, has a roll up your sleeves ‘can do’ mantra, and has spent her life giving everything a crack to dial up the carpe diem in her every day so she doesn’t die wondering. In this episode, we hear about some of the formative experiences that have shaped the adult George is today, including the trauma of losing her beloved sister to suicide, weathering a marriage breakup, mental health challenges, and her commitment to continuous self-reflection and self-improvement so she can build a safe harbour for herself, and those in her fold. George reflects on the realisation that she is more capable than she ever thought, and also that being overly trusting of others hasn’t always served her well as an entrepreneur. She also shares the ways she has found to calm her mind, by journaling her fears and resentments, meditating, minimising alcohol, and uncoupling herself from her work. There’s a lot in this conversation, including quite a few F-bombs (sorry about that!). But the truth is it’s a story from the heart - raw, real, and strong. We started by asking George some rapid fire questions, beginning with who she is in the world of biscuits. Welcome to the summer series of Lady Startup! The show where female entrepreneurs share the ups and downs of building an empire. In this special bonus series, we're sharing awesome interviews Mia Freedman did with female entrepreneurs on her podcast, No Filter. To hear more of her chats head to... https://www.mamamia.com.au/podcasts/no-filter/ This week's guest is George McEncroe, founder of the female ride-sharing app, Sheba. In 2016 George was working several jobs and saving for a house deposit after she’d divorced from her husband. To get a little extra cash she registered to be an Uber driver but kept pulling out at the last minute because she was worried about the risks of driving at night. So instead of moving on with her life and doing nothing about it, she decided to make her own all-female ride-sharing app - all female drivers, all female passengers and a service where people would be comfortable transporting their kids. So how do you go about building your own app? Or competing with a behemoth like Uber? Mia Freedman talks to the woman who did all those things, George McEncroe. Left to right: Sally Warhaft, George McEncroe and Kate McClymont — Photo: Emily Harms How do headline-grabbing stories about powerful figures in the media affect the broader Australian culture? The #MeToo movement began in the US – with the Harvey Weinstein revelations in October 2017 – and it quickly spread around the globe. In this discussion, we'll look at how #MeToo is playing out here in Australia with two guests who approach the subject from very different angles. Investigative reporter Kate McClymont broke the Don Burke sexual harassment allegation story late last year. George McEncroe is the founder of Shebah, an all-female rideshare service (in the style of Uber), which launched last year too. With Sally Warhaft, our guests discuss how #MeToo is changing public conversation and affecting private lives. Can #MeToo benefit all women or are the gains of the movement restricted to certain sections of society? What are women riding with Shebah saying about harassment and everyday safety in Australian cities? And what more can be done to effect lasting change?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last year, George McEncroe had an epiphany. The single mum of four teenagers applied, twice, to be an Uber driver, but something didn't feel right about it. At the same time, her eldest daughter and her friends were walking home from parties because they didn't feel safe in either taxis or ride-share cars. "I wish there was a female-only ridesharing service," she thought. So she decided to make one. As you do. And after a few all- night planning sessions, untold amounts of hard work, throwing in her life savings and convincing family and friends to invest in her ambitious lady startup idea - Shebah was born. Over the past twelve months, the former teacher, radio host and comedian has built a business that benefits women in more ways than getting them from A to B. Because smart women with drive can achieve anything. Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman. With thanks to special guest George McEncroe. Download the Shebah app here. George McEncroe, teacher, comedienne and broadcaster has launched a new ride share service, Shebah: Female drivers, female passengers. The company is ‘growing beautifully’, listen to find out how George’s past careers had an influence on her success. Not many CEO’s have been described as Geraldine Doogue meets Rosanne Barr. Shebah founder George McEncroe is unafraid to make a joke, about herself or the world she sees around her, and her keen observation skills as a stand-up comedienne and a fear of not having a go, could be the key to success for this fledgling company, which offers a safe space for female riders and drivers in this new car share service.

Talking Poofy (Scott Brennan, Adam Richard, Toby Sullivan) present The Poofcast 50 (Season 3 Episode 5) guest-starring George McEncroe, Paul Horan and special guest star Wes Snelling as The Barbra Trap.Scott has a shocking revelation about his personal life that leaves Adam and Toby flabbergasted, and wondering if this is indeed the first horseman of the apocalypse. (If it is, the first horseman has some outrageous saddle sores). The Interrogaytion turns its beady eyes on George McEncroe (Can of Worms, The Circle) who has gotten in the Poofcast mood by getting rancid the night before, and it leads to a rather bizarre discussion about The Barbra Trap. You'll understand when you've heard it...The Grunt Report reveals that Grunty MacFarkring is running a foam party, and isn't he thrilled about that? Wes Snelling is channeling Grunty in his disaffected disdain for his own segment, Where's Wes? and Mother Horan gives us a schooling on the gays of ancient China, and their fondness for half-eaten stone fruit in Poofstory.WARNING The Poofcast contains coarse language, explicit discussion of sexual acts, sexual harassment of hapless busboys and The Barbra Trap.
