Dr. Laura offers a reassuring perspective in this solo episode, exploring how to stay grounded when the world and work feel uncertain and overwhelming. Drawing on her experience as a psychologist, she explains how fear can push us into fight, flight, or freeze responses, which ultimately drain energy and disrupt relationships. Dr. Laura brings the focus back to the present moment, encouraging us to reconnect with what's in our control today instead of getting swept up in global uncertainty and negative news cycles. Dr. Laura shares practical ways to restore calm and clarity through simple yet powerful practices, including the three W's of walk, window, and water, which she learned from her friends at CALM. She urges us to reconnect with activities that recharge our personal energy. The importance of setting boundaries with media and social platforms, while cultivating gratitude and self-awareness in daily life, is part of achieving this recharge. With warmth and insight, Dr. Laura reminds us that even in difficult times, small intentional actions help build resilience, restore perspective, and create a sense of peace. “Staying grounded means what can you control today and this week?” - Dr. Laura About Dr. Laura: Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett is a work and career psychologist and thought leader on the evolution of work. Let us know what you think about the podcast!Episode 218: How to Focus on What You Can Control When Family Relationships Are HardWhen a relationship is strained, it's so tempting to think: If I say it the right way… if I do enough… if I stay kind enough… then they'll finally respond the way I need them to. But the truth is, you can't control what someone else thinks, feels, or does. What you can control is how you show up, and that's where change begins. In this episode, you'll learn:How Stephen R. Covey's “Circles” framework helps you sort what you're worried about (concern) from what you can impact (influence) and what you can actually choose (control). The difference between control and influence and why confusing the two often leads to frustration, resentment, and burnout. Why blame, of yourself or others, quietly steals your power and what to do instead when you feel stuck. What “your inputs” really are in a struggling relationship and how to check whether you're expecting something different than what you're planting.A simple journaling question to help you reclaim steadiness and integrity: “Who am I being in the relationship, and how is that in my control?”When you focus on your circle of control, your thoughts, feelings, actions, and relational inputs, you stop chasing the impossible job of managing someone else's inner world. You may not be able to control outcomes, but you can keep planting what aligns with who you want to be. Over time, that steadiness changes you, and it often shifts the relationship more than force ever could. Tina Gosney is the Family Conflict Coach. In today's episode, Gina discusses radical acceptance and how we can use this practice to reduce the severity and adverse consequences of anxiety. Drawing inspiration from Tara Brach's insightful work, I explore the idea that we often spend too much of our energy defending our lives instead of living them fully. By acknowledging our feelings and experiences without judgment, we can begin to cultivate a more peaceful existence.I discuss the principles I've learned from Marsha Linehan's dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), highlighting the importance of embracing both acceptance and change in our lives. I emphasize that anxiety often prevents us from seeing the possibility of these dual approaches, leading us to resist the present moment. Radical acceptance empowers us to understand that every moment is part of a larger continuum, allowing us to move away from judgment and toward acceptance. The episode clarifies that practicing radical acceptance does not equate to resignation. Instead, it is about recognizing reality and finding effective ways to cope with it. By learning to accept our circumstances—like getting stuck in traffic or facing unexpected challenges—we can reduce our stress and shift our perspective toward more constructive actions, such as listening to uplifting content or practicing mindfulness. I share practical strategies to help listeners integrate radical acceptance into their daily lives, starting with acknowledging our resistance to reality, which often leads to self-imposed suffering.#RadicalAcceptance #AnxietyManagement #TaraBrach #DBT #Mindfulness #SelfCompassion #MentalHealthMatters #Resilience #InnerPeace #StressRelief #AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan #MarshaLinehan #EmotionalIntelligence #PresentMoment #NonJudgment #MentalWellness #SelfCare #CopingMechanisms #OvercomingAnxiety #MindfulLiving #Psychology #PersonalDevelopment #SerenityPrayer #HolisticHealing #EmotionalRegulation #GrowthMindset #AnxietyRelief #BePresent #SelfLove #MentalHealthAwareness #CalmAndCollected #Neuroplasticity #AcceptanceAndCommitment #WellnessJourney #PeaceOfMind #MindfulnessPractice #Reframing #StayCalm #InnerStrength #LifeSkills #HealingJourney #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Does your brain go straight to worst-case scenarios when you think about someone you love, and make you feel like it's your job to prevent them all? In this Coaching Hotline episode, I coach someone through intense anxiety about their child's future and explain why believing you are responsible for everything that could happen is what's actually creating the panic. Then I answer a question about staying motivated during a job search, and why trying to force motivation when you don't know what you want is never going to work. If you struggle with anxiety about others or feel unmotivated when pursuing your goals, this episode will show you how to question the beliefs creating pressure and fear, and how to move forward from a place of clarity instead of self-judgment.Submit your own question here and it might get answered on a future episode: unfuckyourbrain.com/coachinghotlineGet full show notes, transcript, and more information here: schoolofnewfeministthought.com/485Follow along on Instagram: instagram.com/karaloewentheil/

What is the difference between a "gut feeling" and a fear-based reaction? In this episode, former crisis negotiator Lance Burdett joins the podcast to bridge the gap between high-stakes tactical experience and modern neuroscience. Lance spent over two decades with the New Zealand Police, including 13 years as a lead crisis negotiator. Han joins me to reflect on the legacy of his fellow Dutchman, GM Jan Timman, who recently passed away. We also explore a fascinating recent project: Han built a custom chess database with the help of the LLM Claude, which handled all of the coding. He explains how players can use LLMs effectively for chess study and recommends other powerful digital tools. Finally, Han offers evergreen advice on rest, mindset, and accurately assessing your own chess performance. In this episode of Do Good to Lead Well, I welcome Dr. Jacqueline Sperling, a clinical psychologist, assistant professor in psychology at Harvard Medical School, and the co-founder and co-program director of the McLean Anxiety Mastery Program at McLean Hospital to discuss her latest book, “Find Your Fierce: How to Put Social Anxiety in Its Place.”Motivated by long waitlists at treatment centers and the slow path many face toward accessing help for social anxiety, Jacqueline Sperling shares her mission: to offer practical, evidence-based tools that anyone can use, regardless of clinical diagnosis or age. She grounds her message in empowerment, emphasizing that anxiety is a universal emotion—sometimes adaptive, sometimes disruptive—but always manageable with the right approach.Major themes include: • Understanding Anxiety: Dr. Sperling defines anxiety as a forward-looking form of fear and reframes it as a resource that can help us prepare for life's challenges, provided we don't let it dominate our decision-making. • The Thoughts-Feelings-Behaviors Model: Our discussion breaks down how our internal dialogue, emotions, and actions interconnect. Techniques like “stop, drop, and roll” and identification of unhelpful thought categories (catastrophizing, shoulds, overgeneralizing) are brought to life through questions from the live audience. • Leadership and Team Dynamics: We explore how leaders can compassionately address anxiety in their teams, foster psychological safety, and model healthy boundaries, which are especially during disruptive times and organizational uncertainty.Check out this episode for an honest, caring invitation for how we can create lasting mental health hygiene: a daily, mindful practice to care for ourselves, as we pursue meaningful work and lead with compassion. What You'll Learn- How to flip the script when you always expect the worst.- How leaders can compassionately support team members stuck in negative thought cycles.- Strategies for dealing with imposter syndrome and perfectionism.- Practical tips for receiving feedback without defensiveness.- Ways to maintain resilience in uncertain, disruptive times.- The power of mental health hygiene.Podcast Timestamps02:15 Dr. Jacqueline Sperling's background04:07 Origin story of "Find Your Fierce" book05:48 Understanding anxiety vs. fear07:49 The three-component model (thoughts, feelings, behaviors)10:04 Stop, drop, and roll technique14:23 Managing catastrophizing in team members18:54 Addressing imposter syndrome23:01 Overcoming fear of speaking up in meetings28:08 Values-based anxiety management31:53 The "shoulds" and "musts" trap33:51 Receiving feedback effectively38:03 Managing team anxiety during disruption40:06 Addressing perfectionism44:40 Delegation and leadership anxiety48:33 Overgeneralizing dangers52:07 Mental health hygiene practicesKEYWORDSPositive Leadership, Managing Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Thought-Feeling-Behavior Model, Catastrophizing, Mindfulness, Imposter Syndrome, Perfectionism, Exposure Therapy, Behavioral Experiments, Self-insight, Mental Health Hygiene, Resilience, Stress Management, Reframing, Team Dynamics, Sleep Hygiene, Self-care, CEO Success

In today's Q&A episode, I am answering two powerful parenting questions about teens who are anxious, withdrawn, or pushing parents away.Exploring how to support a 14-year-old who feels intense anxiety entering stores or public places, and why this “spotlight stage” is such a normal part of teen development. Listen in to hear me share how tools like the CALM Technique, predictability, rehearsal, and sensory anchors can reduce anticipatory fear and help anxious teens feel more regulated. We then look at how to communicate with a 15-year-old who shuts down or becomes easily irritated, and why teens often push away the feeling of being small rather than the parent themselves. I offer practical strategies like side-door conversations, low-pressure moments of connection, a warm neutral tone, and the 5:2 ratio to keep communication open and relationship-focused.This episode is a reassuring guide for any parent navigating anxious teens, withdrawn teens, or the normal developmental challenges of adolescence reminding you that connection and co-regulation are the bridge back to closeness.Jennifer's Takeaways:Q&A on Helping a 14-Year-Old with Anxiety (00:01)Strategies for Managing Anxiety in Public Places (04:46)Connecting with Teenagers: Side Door Conversations (09:05)Building Connection Through Proximity and Moments (15:13)Resources and Final Thoughts (18:12)Meet Jennifer KolariJennifer Kolari is the host of the “Connected Parenting” weekly podcast and the co-host of “The Mental Health Comedy” podcast. "It's now obvious to me that it's harder to maintain that sense of community unless you've got things like parkrun that are driving that connection." Our kids are living in an anxiety-promoting world. There is so much stimulation out there thanks to modern technology, which gives their brains a lot to process. Some even say that anxiety is a normal and rational reaction to the modern world.Anxiety is the second most common mental health disorder among children in Australia. Mindfulness stops being a buzzword when kids learn to use it in real time to calm their bodies, name their feelings, and stay connected to their breath when life gets loud. Leslie sits down with Julie Freeman, Executive Director of KNOWTICE, to talk about how mindfulness for kids can shape the kind of self-awareness that leads to genuine self-confidence. Julie shares how small, repeatable moments, like pausing to notice a feeling or grounding the body before reacting, help children manage stress, stay present, and access their best thinking. When mindfulness starts early, kids learn they have control over their reactions, which builds emotional strength that grows with them through adolescence and adulthood. The conversation goes beyond quiet moments and breathing exercises to reveal how these early lessons create confident teens who trust themselves and understand their emotions. Leslie and Julie also reflect on how this work ripples forward into adulthood, showing up in the way confident women lead, parent, and care for themselves. By teaching kids mindfulness now, we give them tools to feel steady in uncertainty and connected to who they are - a foundation every confident person stands on. Can Christians and anxiety go hand in hand? The answer is a resounding yes. Christians and anxiety often go hand in hand. Not because of a lack of faith, but because we live in a broken world in which many things can impact mental, physical, and spiritual health. 400th Episode Friends, I cannot believe this is the 400th episode. When I set out to start the podcast five and a half years ago, I thought I'd share stories of women and men reinventing themselves as entrepreneurs and starting their second phase. My idea quickly morphed into something more. Not only did I want to inspire others to follow their values, visions, and passions and discover a purpose greater than themselves, but I also wanted to help guide them in this pursuit. Because so much of my focus was on building a business, naturally, the content we created became more about business growth advice and stories of success. We added small doses of faith, mental health, mindset, and wellness to round out the content. As I was thinking about what to do in celebration of this episode, because I think it is a big deal to make it this far, someone sent me an email. The email was in response to an email I sent about using journaling as a tool to navigate anxiety. It read: I don't get anxiety, period, if one is of faith in Jesus Christ! Goodbye. The old me would have quickly hit return and tried to convince him that having faith doesn't mean you will never have anxiety. But instead, I thought, 'No, he said goodbye, which made me chuckle; let him go.' People like him cannot be convinced, and it isn't my job to change his perspective. Instead, I decided to take advantage of his lack of understanding to create content that could help many. The combination of Christians and anxiety does not have to cause shame. A perspective like his can cause a person who loves Jesus to feel shame over experiencing anxiety. No one needs an additional reason to feel shame. Living life as a human can result in enough shame, especially when experiencing brain health challenges. I wonder, as I'm writing this, what your thoughts are? Can one be a Christian and have anxiety? My thoughts are that as humans, we are not perfect. We are subject to human dysfunctions mentally, physically, and spiritually. Christians get diabetes. They get cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and neurological diseases. And yes, Christians experience mental health challenges too. We are not divine; therefore, we can be afflicted by ailments, illnesses, and diseases. To judge a Christian because they have a disease or ailment is simply unkind and results in shame. The key, for Christians and everyone, is to lean into Christ and our faith to navigate anxiety. When we put all of our trust in earthly solutions, we risk idolatry and anxiety rising. Proverbs 17:3 reminds us, "The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tries hearts." As heat refines gold and silver, God purifies us through challenging experiences such as anxiety and emotional chaos in our lives and relationships. Having anxiety isn't a punishment. If we choose, we can use it as a way to grow closer to God and allow Him to sanctify and purify us. Read the full show notes and access all links. Have you ever asked yourself? Do I show my children, through my actions, how to maintain a healthy marriage and set high standards for future relationships? How do I intentionally teach my kids lessons about money, relationships, and mental health that they aren't learning in school? How do I respond when my kids come to me with emotional struggles? If you ever thought parenting was just about getting your kids to do their homework and behave, think again. The real curriculum happens at home, in the conversations we have with our children. Today, Larry and Ethan dive into the essential life lessons that high school just doesn't teach—think managing money, building real relationships, navigating mental health, and mastering communication beyond the digital world. Along the way, you'll hear personal stories about fatherhood, learning how to treat women with respect, and the power of leading by example at home. Larry and Ethan also shine a spotlight on the importance of old-school manners, effective boundary-setting, and even the art of saving and investing early. Plus, they get candid about handling rejection, repairing relationships, and the sometimes tough but necessary skill of saying “no.” As always, they keep things light and relatable, weaving in fun anecdotes and a dash of family banter Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: Relationship Skills Aren't Taught in School: Ethan shares how Larry modeled (not just talked about!) the importance of treating women with respect—from a proper handshake to introducing himself to his girlfriend's parents, and how these “old school manners” set him apart in today's world. Larry and Ethan agree: the best lessons are caught, not taught. Money Management Early On Makes a Difference: Larry reminisces about starting Ethan and his brothers on the envelope savings system and quarterly meetings with a financial advisor from a young age. It pays off: Ethan feels more confident with money than most of his peers, recognizing the power of starting early, setting goals, and understanding critical concepts like compound interest. Create a Safe Space for Mental Health: Ethan reflects on how being able to talk openly about tough situations—whether it's heartbreak, anxiety, or just a hard day—has helped him develop emotional resilience. Larry encourages parents to model vulnerability, listen, and share stories from their own journey (even the awkward ones). Saying “No” and People Pleasing: Larry and Ethan get honest about people pleasing, time management, and learning to filter commitments. Larry's golden rule: “If it's not a hell yes, it's a no.” They discuss real-life examples, from turning down extra work projects to standing strong against peer pressure. Repairing Relationships & Healthy Conflict: Ethan shares what works in his relationship: addressing conflict calmly, not going to bed angry if possible, but also not being afraid to sleep on things when emotions run high—with the agreement to circle back and resolve it the next day. Whether you're a dad, a son, or just someone looking to live more intentionally, this conversation is packed with relatable humor, honest reflections, and practical takeaways to help you. Here's what research and observation highlight about family communication: Research shows that 86% of adolescents identify parents as their primary model for relationship skills and values. Studies found that 49% of Americans say they frequently agree to things they don't want to do to avoid disappointing others. Studies found that over 80% of teens say the way their parents communicate with each other directly affects how they approach their own romantic relationships.
