Get our special offer by visiting www.incogni.com/spacenutsIn this episode of Space Nuts, Andrew Dunkley and Professor Fred Watson discuss various topics in astronomy and space science. They talk about the James Webb Space Telescope capturing a direct photo of an exoplanet that is possibly the oldest and coldest one discovered so far. They also discuss the Perseverance Rover's discovery of leopard spots on rocks on Mars, which could potentially indicate signs of past microbial life. Additionally, they mention the shrinking of Jupiter's Great Red Spot and the challenges of bringing back rocks from Mars for further analysis. In this conversation, Fred and Andrew discuss the life and work of Tycho Brahe, a renowned astronomer from the 16th century. They explore his upbringing, his discovery of astronomy, and his contributions to the field. They also touch on his interest in alchemy and the fate of his castle. The conversation then shifts to the Europa Clipper mission, which aims to study Jupiter's moon Europa and search for signs of life. They discuss the mission's objectives and the instruments it will use. Finally, they address the question of why proto-planets do not become stars themselves and the gradual loss of Mars' primordial atmosphere. For more Space Nuts visit our website at www.spacenuts.iowww.bitesz.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/space-nuts--2631155/support.

Coming into her senior season, Lake Oswego's Mia Brahe-Pedersen already has the things many of her Oregon high school peers are seeking. She's already a 12-time state champion (three each in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay), a two-time Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year, an 11-time national champion and a 22-time All-American. She holds the Oregon high school record in the 100 (11.00 seconds), 200 (22.43), 4x400-meter relay (3:48.49) and the 4x200-meter relay (1:39.86), she's signed a name, image and likeness deal with Nike and she's already committed to run for USC. But Brahe-Pedersen doesn't have everything she came for. “Overall, my goals are pretty simple,” she said. “Break as many records as possible and make as much history as possible.” Read the full story written by high school sports coordinator Nik Streng at OregonLive.com/sports on Thursday, March 27. Galileo travels to Rome and puts all his cards on the table. It was time to make the argument Copernicus was right. The Jesuits don't buy and he leaves Rome, formally or perhaps informally, warned never to advocate for Copernicanism again.WebsitePatreon Free TrialWestern Civ 2.0 Free TrialThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5553835/advertisement
Today we get to the meat of our series on Galileo, the publication of The Starry Messenger. Galileo turns his much-improved telescope to the heavens and realizes: Jupiter has moons, Venus orbits the sun, and that same sun has spots. None of these discoveries are compatible with Ptolemy's never-changing universe. Today Galileo sets himself on a collision course with the Inquisition.WebsitePatreon Free TrialWestern Civ 2.0 Free TrialThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5553835/advertisement
In this episode, Galileo finally turns his attention firmly to the heavens. Quickly, Galileo recognizes that, with this new technology, the telescope, he can decisively prove that both Ptolemy and Tycho Brahe were wrong. Copernicus was right. Today Galileo sets himself on a collision course with the Inquisition and the Roman Catholic Church. Nicholas Copernicus and Galileo Galilei usually get all the credit for the breakthroughs in astronomy in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries and rightfully so to an extent. However, though his efforts were far from "sexy", Tycho Brahe was an essential innovator in his own right during the early Scientific Revolution. Without Brahe, we might not get many aspects of modern science that we, frankly, take for granted today. In today's episode, I tell the tale of the early modern astronomer who lost half his nose in a duel. Comet Nishimura gave us all a once in several lifetimes chance to experience the wonders of space, and for most earthlings it was a wondrous momentous occasion. But to those who may still believe in the Comet's mysteriously ominous place in the annals of doomsday prophesies and catastrophe, perhaps things looked a little different. Come with me this week as I explore the Comet's complicated history and relationship with mankind, then sit back and enjoy a different kind of brush with green tinted extra terrestrial terror as I read When The Moon Turned Green, by Hal K. Today we finish Copernicus and inch toward Tycho Brahe. On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres was a truly monumental achievement. Sadly, its release was marred by a poorly added preface by Andreas Osiander. In the end, no one involved with its publication was pleased by the final product. Still, in this history podcast, we evaluate the role the work played in the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. 55 Cancri is a busy star system. It consists of two stars and at least five planets. None of the planets is a good home for life, although there could be undiscovered planets that are more welcoming. The planets have a couple of sets of names. Their scientific designations are 55 Cancri b, c, d, e, and f. But a few years back, the IAU — the International Astronomical Union — gave them proper names: Galileo, Brahe, Lipperhey, Janssen, and Harriot. They're named for astronomers, or for lensmakers involved in creating early telescopes. Astronomers have discovered more than 5,000 planets in other star systems. And hundreds more are added to the list every year. That's a lot of worlds to name. The scientific designations take the name of the star — a proper name or a catalog name — and add a letter, starting with b. The letters are applied based on the order in which the planets were discovered. The IAU has held several contests to pick proper names, and it's adopted about 150 of the suggestions. They come from scores of countries and cultures — named for people, places, animals, and other sources. And if a system has more than one planet, a single theme is applied to all of the planets — like the planets of 55 Cancri. The system is in the constellation Cancer, which is in the east at first light. The crab is easy to pick out because it spreads to the upper left of Venus, the “morning star.” Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting with Ali Brahe-Daddo who exploded onto the Australian modelling scene at the age of 16 and became the cover girl of Dolly Magazine. Over the years Ali's life would take her in many different directions including moving to Hollywood with her husband of 30 years, motherhood, (she has 3 children), fitness and teaching. Her first book, QUEEN MENOPAUSE – a friendly, frank, compassionate and comprehensive companion for any woman experiencing menopause – was published in 2022 by Allen & Unwin. She also Co-hosts with her husband, actor Cameron Daddo, on their hit podcast “Separate Bathrooms”. Interviewing some of the most interesting couples in Australia, they take a look behind the closed doors of their relationships. With her gorgeous smile and all-Australian beach body, she lit up the covers of Australia's top fashion and pop magazines. Cleo, Dolly and Cosmopolitan, kept her face front and centre with fashion spreads and stories. It was rare that she was not on the cover every month of one of these publications, well into the 90's. Now Alison's daughter has just signed to a modelling agency, in her 20's. Alison talks opening and honestly today about her perimenopause journey, and why sharing this journey has been so important in helping other women to navigate perimanopause. She is also open about attending therapy and how a 30 year marriage requires genuine work! This is a brilliant conversation! You can follow Ali Daddo here:https://www.instagram.com/alidaddoQueen Menopause is available at all good book stores and is available on Audible.https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Queen-Menopause-Audiobook/B09TWX4Q37-The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the pioneering Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546 – 1601) whose charts offered an unprecedented level of accuracy. In 1572 Brahe's observations of a new star challenged the idea, inherited from Aristotle, that the heavens were unchanging. He went on to create his own observatory complex on the Danish island of Hven, and there, working before the invention of the telescope, he developed innovative instruments and gathered a team of assistants, taking a highly systematic approach to observation. A second, smaller source of renown was his metal prosthetic nose, which he needed after a serious injury sustained in a duel. The image above shows Brahe aged 40, from the Atlas Major by Johann Blaeu. In this episode, Cass is joined by Alison Brahe Daddo, a screenwriter, podcaster, teacher and former model who appeared regularly on the cover of Cosmopolitan, Dolly and Cleo magazines in the '90s. She's now written a book called 'Queen Menopause' which is a frank and compassionate companion to any woman experiencing menopause. Ali reflects on her career, her experience with sexual assault, and how mothering her daughters is a completely different ballgame to mothering her son.
Anyone of my vintage growing up in the 80s and 90s knows my guest today, Alison Brahe. As a teen who wanted a career in journalism, I consumed magazines like oxygen. Alison was the epitome a Dolly magazine cover girl everyone wanted to be. Even as I posted on my socials, I was speaking to Alison today childhood friends instantly messaged me in excitement and gushing recollections of how much they recall loving Alison Brahe. She was fresh faced and golden skinned with a naturally beautiful smile. Alison was as well-known as Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson and was on covers everywhere. Better still was that she fell in love with and married another Australian icon, former model, singer and actor Cameron Daddo in their early 20s and are together today. The recap on her story is this. Alison Brahe began working as a model at 16 years old. She was an instant hit in both the magazine and commercial worlds and soon found herself in demand in Australia, London and Tokyo. Big name clients like Coca Cola and Speedo came calling, as well titles like Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly. In 1992, she graced the cover of Dolly seven times and in Cleo was voted among the "Top Most Influential Women of the Century" by its readers. Alison was the face of Portmans through their most successful period and later became the face of the Jacqui E clothing label. In the 90's Alison became the host of one of Australia's most enduring and successful children's television programs, Here's Humphrey. She went on to host her own afternoon show for the NINE Network, Guess What? Then Alison and Cameron moved to Los Angeles in 1992. It came as a shock to Alison's management when one day she walked away from lucrative modeling and acting career to follow her heart. In 2013, she achieved her degree from UCLA in Early Childhood and embarked on a successful career in childcare. Alison returned with her family to Australia in 2016 to spend time with her parents and unite her children with her homeland. She still teaches and has created a popular podcast called "Separate Bathrooms" with her husband and produced by Nova Entertainment. Now in her 50s, Alison has experienced a lot of the changes every woman of a certain age does. Menopause. She wrote a book ‘Queen Menopause' in fact. For a very long-time menopause was treated like a deeply hidden secret – my own mother barely talked about it in the company although she suffered through symptoms for a long time while working, raising me, and just trying to navigate life. Hear from Alison on: Do you recall when you started to feel “the change” and how you managed it day to day? Communication is key when it comes to managing menopause – like all life matters really. You recommend choosing a time when you're in a good headspace to share with your partner what you're feeling. This can be hard for some of us independent types. Any examples of how you have done this successfully? Did you get help from a GP ad what did that look like in terms of treatment options? When was the turning point for you to want to make menopause a cause and even a book? A short story of how you wrote the book and what made you think it was something worthwhile? Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Menopause? On this ID the Future, host Andrew McDiarmid sits down with historian and philosopher of science Michael Keas to discuss a recent article at Times Higher Education, “My Precious! How Academia's Gollums Guard Their Research Fields.” The article looks at how scientific progress is being impeded by a culture in which scientists jealously guard their research instead of sharing it. Keas says the problem seems to have gotten worse in recent years but isn't a new one. He illustrates with the story of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler. Brahe, a sixteenth-century Danish astronomer, sat on his astronomical research for years, rather than sharing it with Johannes Kepler, his assistant. Kepler only got hold of it when Brahe died unexpectedly shortly Read More › Source

Ali Brahe Daddo was a household name in Australia in the 90s as a model regularly appearing on magazine covers. Life took her on adventures to LA where she started her family and built new identities as an early child educator, producer and screenwriter. Since returning to Australia in 2016 she has continued writing and has released 'Queen Menopause' offering a new conversation on the topic and sharing her own experience and those of a few other high-profile women. This is a quick episode but there is so much joy in it as we explore the topic of menopause and normalise it as an important topic - it affects so many of us. Body autonomy, busting taboos and generally the joy of growing up into self realised humans are three of my favourite themes in this Episode. Find Queen Menopause where all good books are sold, or contact me directly via @soulmamahub on socials with any questions or feedback or to share your experience of menopause. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
