This week, we bring you two stories about little guys trying to do big big things. First, self-proclaimed animal grinch producer Becca Bressler introduces us to perhaps the one creature that has warmed her heart: a cricket. And more specifically, a male cricket. This is a tale about a tiny Romeo insect trying to find a mate, and the ingenious lengths he'll go to have his beckoning heard. And second, producer Annie McEwen journeys through perhaps the zaniest game of football that has ever been played. When a ragtag group of players take on the top team, will it be an underdog tale for the ages or an absolute disaster? Special thanks to Stephen Spann and Joshua Baxter at the Doris and Harry Vice University Library at Cumberland University as well as Alison Reynolds at Georgia Tech Library. Thanks also to Rick Bell, and to Scott Larson who wrote a book all about this game called Cumberland: The True Story of the Highest Scoring Football Game in History. And finally, thanks so much to our tape syncer Ambriehl Crutchfield for her help with this episode. If you're still interested in learning more about this epic football game, be sure to check out this brilliant and hilarious video by sportswriter Jon Bois. Fred Rascoe from the Georgia Tech Library returns to the show to talk about the changing roles of libraries and scholarly publishing in the 21st century. Fred and Mike discuss why scholarly publishing has been so resistant to, really insulated from, change in the Internet era. They bat around ideas for business models that do not involve universities, companies, or the public paying for expensive journal subscriptions. Mike also makes the argument that peer review is not all it’s cracked up to be and Fred puts him in the hot seat, asking about his own publishing practices.Show details: • Hosted by Michael Filler (@michaelfiller) • Edited by Andrew Cannon (@andrewhcannon) • Recorded on September 13, 2018 • Show notes are available at http://www.fillerlab.com/nanovation/archive/45• Submit feedback at http://www.fillerlab.com/nanovation/feedback

This week I’m joined by Johny Ho, friend to basically every show I’ve produced over the past several years and very active fan and organizer in the Brazilian Buffy fan community in the early 2000’s. Episode 215, “Phases” pushes my nitpicky werewolf fan buttons, does an admirable job of examining issues of what we now know as toxic masculinity, and a very questionable job of examining issues of queer sexual identity. In 216, “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” Spike and Angel discuss the poetry of lung removal and Xander’s got the love. And finally in 217, “Passion” we say hello to Angelus for really the first time, goodbye to Jenny for pretty much the last time, and I get my second-favorite “characters break down sobbing in each others arms in an alleyway” scene from across the two series. Next: I’m joined by Karen Viars, Humanities and Science Fiction Librarian at the Georgia Tech Library and author of various works on fan studies and gender. We’ll be discussing the whimsically-titled “Killed by Death,” the comedic and uplifting “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and the Shape of Water prequel episode, “Go Fish.” THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Guest (00:00:00 - 00:10:33) Main Topic (00:10:33 - 01:36:33) Outro / Next (01:36:33 - 01:39:27) THE LIBRARY Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. Wesley Mead)” by Azura (2017) “Got the Love” by Average White Band, AWB (1974) THE SCHOLARS Whedon Studies Association is a non-profit academic organization devoted to the study of the works of Joss Whedon and his associates. They put out Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies, and Watcher Junior: The Undergraduate Journal of Whedon Studies, both blind peer-reviewed twice-yearly online publications. They also host the biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses, which brings all these incredible scholars together to present papers, discuss ways of incorporating Whedon Studies in education, and basically just geek out together. http://www.whedonstudies.tv/
ATG Media is pleased to recognize the first ever recipients for the Up and Comers award with a series of interviews on the ATG Podcast. Who exactly is an “Up and Comer,” you ask? They are librarians, library staff, vendors, publishers, MLIS students, instructors, consultants, and researchers who are new to their field or are in the early years of the profession. Up and Comers are passionate about the future of libraries. They innovate, inspire, collaborate, and take risks. They are future library leaders and change makers, and we are excited to celebrate them with this award. There were 20 recipients of the award for 2017 that were announced just prior to the 2017 Charleston Conference. A link to the press release is available below. First up, Leah Hinds welcomes Tom Gilson, Associate Editor for Against the Grain, and Charlie Bennett, Public Engagement Librarian at Georgia Tech Library, to the podcast. Thanks very much to both of you for joining us today! Tom is going to conduct the interview so I’ll hand things over to him now. Being a Public Engagement Librarian sounds like a fun job. What does the job entail? What are your key responsibilities? You mentioned in your Against the Grain profile that a couple of years ago you were selected to deliver a TEDx talk on libraries at TEDx Telfair Street. Can you tell us more about that? Erin is Director of Collection Services at Reed College, and she’ll be interviewing Michael, who is Licensing/Acquisitions Librarian at the University of Connecticut. Michael mentions that in his spare time he enjoys hiking and biking, and has seen a lot of the U.S. this way. He tells us about his favorite experiences seeing America “from the saddle of the twelve-speed”. Michael's interview starts at 20:45 in the audio file. -------------------------------------------------- Finally, Leah Hinds speaks with Wendy Hagenmaier, Digital Collections Archivist at Georgia Institute of Technology. We get to hear from Wendy on what it takes to be a Digital Collections Archivist? Wendy's interview starts at 38:00 in the audio file. Fred Rascoe from the Georgia Tech Library joins the podcast to talk about the changing world of academic publishing. We discuss the existing paradigm, why it is under attack, and what we can expect going forward. Along the way, we somehow touch on vinyl records, mustaches, Mexican food, and Barbra Streisand. We round out the show with a potentially blasphemous question: can peer review (at the point of initial publication) be eliminated altogether?Show details: • Hosted and edited by Michael Filler (@michaelfiller) • Recorded on April 12, 2016 • Show notes are available at http://www.fillerlab.com/nanovation/archive/9 • Submit feedback at http://www.fillerlab.com/nanovation/feedback
The Peachtree Way Exhibit opens May 7th and runs through May 27th. This is the first fruit of a partnership between ADC the Georgia Tech Library, AIA Atlanta and AIA Georgia to promote Georgia's design heritage through expanding the efforts made to identify and preserve important archival documents. Nathan Koskovich, AIA speaks with Jody Thompson, the head of the Georgia Institute of Technology's Archive, and Jack Pyburn, FAIA, who has been instrumental in bringing this partnership together, to discuss why it's necessary to expand the existing archive and what we hope to archive. If you'd like to donate to support this effort please contact Nathan Koskovich at nathan@koskovicharchitecture.com
