DescriptionAlliteration is like a specialized tool that can unlock understanding and retention for the people who are listening to your talks. And those are two things that we want to make sure our talks are always aiming at.Are people picking up? We're laying down and are they walking away with something that can change their lives? Alliteration, I think, can help us do both of those things. And today I'm gonna cover the when, the why, and the how of using alliteration in your talks.LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach Podcast is now on YouTube.

In 15th and 16th century Scotland, in the highest courts of the land, you'd find esteemed poets hurling insults at each other. This was flyting, a sort of medieval equivalent of battle rap, and it was so popular at the time that the King himself wrote instructions for how to do it well. Writer and Scots language campaigner Ishbel McFarlane and historical linguist Joanna Kopaczyk explain the art of flyting, where an insult becomes slander, what's going on within the speech act of performative diss-trading, and what the legal consequences could be of being accused of witchcraft. Find out more about the episode and read the transcript at theallusionist.org/flyting. Content note: this episode contains brief references to historical capital and corporal punishments, and discussion of insults and slurs; there is also a derogatory term for sex workers, and category A and B swears. Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Do you enjoy the podcast? Please leave a review! Getting into content design is hard enough, but contracting roles are a different struggle altogether. While they can be lucrative (potentially depending where you live) they're also difficult to crack. But they're also a necessary struggle to understand - often the way to start a content design career is to begin with some contracting roles. Today's guest is a content design contracting queen. Alliteration! Slater Katz has worked as content designer for Netflix, Chime, Verizon, Fitbit, and more. Not only can I vouch for her content design skills (she's worked with us at UXCC for a bit) but she's unique in that she understands how business goals and design goals intersect - a rare skill. And she understands personal branding better than anyone in the biz, in my opinion. In this interview we discuss content design contracting, how to improve your personal brand, what makes a great contractor stand out, and why asking questions when you start isn't a sign of weakness - it's a strength. There is da Vinci quote used in Nick Kolenda's book on pricing psychology that sums up what I'm talking about in this video masterclass: “All our knowledge has its origin in our perceptions” Pricing is perception. How we each react to the same price can be different, depending on our perspectives. For this reason, price doesn't have an absolute meaning. And if we understand what shapes perception, we can influence how price is perceived. This video explores ten practical ways this applies to ecommerce stores. [01:10] Your building blocks for understanding price [02:40] 1. Price fluency [03:45] 2. Price structure and simplicity [03:45] 3. Anchor high prices with larger numbers [06:30] 4. Break pricing into smaller units [07:15] 5. Use words of a small magnitude [08:25] 6. Alliteration creates a pleasant sensation [09:20] 7. Put the larger WAS price on the left [10:25] 8. Break down product costs [11:50] 9. Encourage customers to spend early [13:10] 10. Emphasise the most popular pricing option

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Finnish epic poem that first appeared in print in 1835 in what was then the Grand Duchy of Finland, part of the Russian Empire and until recently part of Sweden. The compiler of this epic was a doctor, Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884), who had travelled the land to hear traditional poems about mythical heroes being sung in Finnish, the language of the peasantry, and writing them down in his own order to create this landmark work. In creating The Kalevala, Lönnrot helped the Finns realise they were a distinct people apart from Sweden and Russia, who deserved their own nation state and who came to demand independence, which they won in 1917.
