Boston Common has the distinction of being the first Public Park in America after Puritan colonists bought the land in 1634. Though it's beautiful today, this park has a deeply dark history. It quickly became the grounds for Puritan punishments (think: whipping posts, stocks, and executions). Grab a warm cup as we explore the lives of women who were put to death here and whether or not they still haunt the grounds today.Tea of the Day: DM & Co. «A lawyer has to be compliant. An advice from a lawyer should be fault free. Therefore it is so difficult to just do something. It is not in their DNA."Unlock the secrets to the legal sector's digital transformation with our latest guest, Peter van Dam, Chief Digital Officer at Simonsen Vogt and Wiig. We promise you a journey into the innovative realm where data management and artificial intelligence redefine the traditional practices of law. Peter offers us a glimpse into his professional trajectory from legal tech provider to digital pioneer, emphasizing how data and application integration are revolutionizing legal services.Discover the unique challenges and opportunities that come in a new era of digital sophistication in the law profession. Our conversation dives into the significance of roles like Chief Digital Officer in shaping a progressive future for a historically conservative field. We share stories of how to catalyze excitement for technology among legal eagles and clients alike, and we explore the strategic vision needed to navigate the balance between innovation, confidentiality, and compliance. The episode examines the expanding potential for automation within legal services. Here, the focus shifts to how digital tools enhance, rather than replace, the human expertise of lawyers. Rounding off the discussion, we shine a light on how law firms are upgrading their data access protocols, ensuring that sensitive information remains under lock and key.My key takeaways:LegalTechLegal might seem as a conservative section, but on the insight everyone, from lawyer, to staff to paralegal is working on continuous improvement and growing more and more efficient.Low code, citizen development, hackathons, etc. are ways to quickly iterate on ideas and applying them.Internal and external marketing of the importance of technology in law is important. You have to lift those first step barriers, an get first hand knowledge of using AI and tech, to really embrace it.Document & Content ManagementOptimizing interoperability and data exchange between different document management tools is an interesting journey. There is huge, untapped potential in unstructured data. The biggest challenge for document management is to find ways of cutting through the noise of redundant, obsolete, and trivial data. You need a certain quality of data sources to utilize LLMs and genAI.Methods of AI Governance need to work in concert with classical methods of data and Information Management.Data volumes are growing exponentially, and so does the cost. Records Management is important to structure data, create retention schedules and ensure that datahis available according to need and regulatory requirements.AI and trends in TechnologyFind a way to balance need and investment in a way that you have the relevant tools available when needed but are not exclusively reliant on those tools.Development in technology, data, AI, sustainability, etc. creates more demand for legal services - technological development accelerates legal demand. For the practice of law, human interaction is vital. There might be a more differentiated service offering going forward, but human interaction with a lawyer will still be at the core of the practice. The role of CDOThe role of CDO is challenged, because it can mean so many different things in different environments.A Chief Digital Officer is important to get enthusiasm about new technology and to actually get it implemented and used.Communication is the most important skill and tool.As a CDO or Digitalization department you need to think 6 month ahead, elicit trends and find out what can become relevant for your firm.

A consultant taught them how to design an Electronic Records Management system to organize, store, and secure their digital files while also protecting their operations from future digital disasters. Electronic Records Management is the third element in building business infrastructure. It involves organizing all your digital files based on the departments you identified in the Business Parts Analysis. It also includes assigning proper access rights according to the roles identified in your Business Design Blueprint. It's the perfect complement to disaster recovery and business continuity planning. Now you can discover how to create one for your organization! In this episode, host Alicia Butler Pierre offers a 9-step tutorial on creating an Electronic Records Management system. Erica Toelle is the Senior Product Marketing Manager on the Microsoft Purview product team. Her focus is on growing the Data Lifecycle and Records Management business and listening to customers and partners to make solutions better. She and Tom Fox discuss her podcast, her book, and the relationship between technology and humans. Relaunching the Uncovering Hidden Risks Podcast Tom asks Erica why she relaunched her podcast. Erica explains that she hopes to target chief security officers, and people in compliance leadership roles, and provide information on topics they are interested in learning about. In particular, the podcast explores how enterprises can reduce their risk by moving to a more holistic approach to data protection. The world of compliance is rapidly changing, with new regulations and privacy laws being implemented regularly, and the leaders want to know and understand how their peers successfully comply. Erica says that her podcast will bring these stories to life, “so that we can all learn from the best practices and success and hopefully apply them in our own situation.” Technology Requires Humans Tom comments that a common theme on Erica's podcast is the human element. Erica explains that technology cannot function without the human element. Technology takes care of collecting data and presenting it in a way that would help people make the best business decisions. However, no algorithm can replace the human ability to weigh, analyze and make a decision when it comes to identifying and managing risks, and driving compliance.  Microsoft 365 Compliance Erica wrote a book entitled Microsoft 365 Compliance; Tom asks what inspired her to write this book and who is her intended audience. When the pandemic hit, Erica responds, she was working as a consultant at Microsoft helping customers deploy compliance tools. She was one of the only Microsoft Teams compliance experts in the world. It was a stressful period as she was trying to keep governments and business afloat and online. This situation taught her that there was a need for more compliance experts who were familiar with Microsoft's compliance technology. Therefore, she decided to write a book to make the assimilation into the job and online compliance sphere easier for her successors.  Looking Ahead In the future, Erica would like to address more topics her listeners would like to hear about related to compliance. Additionally, she would like to interview more diverse guests to get a broader perspective on what is happening in the compliance space outside of Microsoft.
