Why would a good and powerful God allow evil and suffering? Todd welcomes Gerry Breshears to the podcast to talk about the problem of evil. Gerry summarizes the most common Christian responses to the problem of evil and explains how focusing on the incarnation can be a helpful place to start. Gerry has been a professor of theology at Western Seminary since 1980. He considers himself a "pastor's pastor" and loves to mentor men and women doing work for the Kingdom.
This week we're thrilled to revisit an important conversation with one of our longest-running and most cherished guests, Dr. Gerry Breshears. Gerry, a beloved Seminary Professor and mentor to many, joins us again to wrestle with the difficult but essential topic of God's judgment and wrath. Our listeners know this is a subject close to Aaron and Brian's hearts, and Gerry provides his gracious yet challenging insights. We examine how God's wrath in the Old Testament fits with His love in the New. We also look at Greg Boyd's cruciform hermeneutic, and Gerry helps us consider whether this is a helpful interpretive framework or if it raises concerns. As always, Gerry's wisdom, humility and grace permeate the discussion as he guides our GoodLion community through these complex issues. Whether you're wrestling with these hard questions for the first time or looking for a fresh perspective, this classic conversation with one of our longtime favorites is bound to stretch, encourage and inform. Join us for another profound and provocative episode that aims to renew and reshape the way we see God. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goodlion/message

In part 2 of our short series on theology, Dr. Gerry Breshears (Western Seminary) helps us understand the dangers of theology gone wrong. Gerry is an amazing theological mind and a fan favorite of the show. In part one, we defined theology and talked about why it's essential for discipleship. In this episode, we'll discuss how theology can at times become an idol. We'll start by asking a tough question: If all Christians have the Holy Spirit, why are there so many theological differences? We'll also explore how we can find unity in the midst of theological diversity and hear from Gerry about how God changed his heart to be more open to those who disagreed with him. Gerry will share his insights on how to approach theology with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from others. We'll also look at the dangers of theology gone wrong when it becomes a burden on the learner, leading to crises of faith, doubt, and deconstruction. Gerry will share his perspective on how we can help those who are struggling through doubt and deconstruction, and for those who want to study theology but feel overwhelmed, he'll provide some practical tips on how to approach theology with care and discernment. So, join us as we deep dive into these tough questions and explore the dangers of theology gone wrong. If you haven't heard the previous episode, make sure to go back and listen to part one. Let's dive back in and pick up the conversation where it left off last time with Dr. Gerry Breshears.
In today's episode of The GoodLion Podcast, we're chatting about something super close to our hearts: what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how theology shapes that journey. With the launch of our humble little ministry, the GoodLion School of Discipleship in Yukon, Oklahoma, we're passionate about fusing hands-on discipleship with some deep, thought-provoking theology. To that end, we've happy to have the amazing Professor Gerry Breshears from Western Seminary joining us for the first of two episodes to explore this fascinating topic! We'll kick things off by getting down to the basics: like, what even is discipleship, and how does theology fit into the picture? Why should we even care about theology as disciples? Why is theology essential for a disciple's growth and understanding? We'll also tackle the potential pitfalls when theology is neglected in the discipleship process and discuss ways to prevent our own theological biases from hindering the way we disciple others. One of the most challenging aspects of discipleship is working and serving alongside people with whom we have theological disagreements. Gerry shares his valuable insights on navigating this tricky terrain while maintaining unity and love for one another. Join us for an enlightening conversation that will encourage listeners to reflect on their own discipleship journeys and appreciate the importance of integrating theology into their practical walk with Jesus. Don't miss this opportunity to grow in your understanding of what it means to be a disciple, embracing both the heart and the mind in your pursuit of Christ.
Why do Christians prescribe to a book as their guide? Is the Bible even accurate or trustworthy? Is it possible for God to speak through words on a page? What do we do with parts of Scripture that are hard to understand? Why are so many issues where the Bible does not tell us what to do? This week we learn from Dr. Gerry Breshears about What We Believe about the Bible. Listen in to rekindle a love for the Word of God or to go deeper in your understanding of how God speaks through His Word.
Here we go! We're fascinated by the supernatural. Ghost stories, shows like Stranger Things, super hero movies with villains of cosmic proportions all intrigue us. But when it comes to the spiritual realm that the Bible describes we tend to either ignore that reality completely or have an unhealthy obsession with it. While we need not spend much time thinking about Satan and the demonic (far better to fixate on Jesus than the devil), it is important to have a biblical understanding of Satan, demons, and spiritual warfare. So Matt gets Dr. Gerry Breshears on the line to fill us in. Dr. Gerry Breshears, professor of theology at Western Seminary in Portland, OR, drops by to drop some knowledge about what the Bible says about the spiritual realm. Dr. Breshears dives into the tough questions about angels, Satan and demons and tackles some perplexing passages of Scriptures that seem particularly strange to our modern ears.
Gerry holds to a view of women in leaders that's sometimes considered “soft complementarian.” He believes women can serve in any position of leadership and teaching in the church, except for elders, since one of the criteria for being an elder (or overseer) is “a husband of one wife.” Gerry explains his view in this podcast episode. Gerry has an MDiv from Denver Seminary and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Fuller Seminary. He's been teaching at Western Seminary since 1980 where he currently serves as a professor of theology. This week we present to you an old episode from season 2! We are hoping it will bless some of you listeners who may have missed it the first time it aired. Aaron & Brian get the amazing Dr. Gerry Breshears on the show to discuss all our burning questions about Salvation. What does it mean to be saved? Can you lose your salvation? How do you know someone is saved? All this and more on today's GoodLion Podcast!
Prof Gerry Breshears is back for his record breaking 3rd time on the show! In this episode we dive into the debate swirling around PSA (Penal Substitutionary Atonement) and ask Gerry all the hard questions! In this episode we cover: What exactly is PSA, and why do so many Christians disagree about it? Can you defend PSA Biblically? What exactly happened on the Cross? What was the Trinity doing? Are the classic song lyrics correct? Did the Father turn his face away from Jesus on the Cross? Was Jesus forsaken on the Cross? Bonus: Which atonement theory does Gerry prefer? And: How can our understanding of the atonement impact our preaching to young people / postmoderns / deconstructionists? Note from Aaron: The idea for this episode has been sitting in my brain for almost 7 years... back when I read a post from my friend and pastor Evan Wickham about his convo with Gerry about the atonement. The insights blew my mind then, and I hope they blow your mind now!
Dr. Gerry Breshears of Western Seminary shares on marriage for father's day 2021.
Worldly leadership seems to be all about commanding. In contrast, Biblical leaders lead by equipping, inspiring, empowering, unifying, exemplifying, caring, and overseeing. They teach, shepherd, correct, rebuke, encourage with great patience. Listen as Reach elder, Dr. Gerry Breshears, joins us to share about our vision to see leaders trained.
In this episode, we dive into some dangerous territory: questions about God's sovereignty. The sovereignty of God can be an extremely challenging topic for Christians. A lot of the debate centers on the phrase "God is in control." What do we mean when we say God is in control? For many, this question leads to an even bigger one: if God is in control, does that mean he causes evil and suffering? Brian and Aaron contrast two theological views of the issue, one framed by renowned reformed pastor John Piper and the other by seminary professor Dr. Gerry Breshears. They discuss why they prefer one view over the other. The guys also get into the Biblical story of Joseph, the phrase "what you meant for evil God meant for good," and what this passage implies (and does not imply) about God's sovereignty. Then we take some hard looks at what extreme positions have to be adopted if we embrace Piper's view of God being the author behind human sins. Finally, we end with a look at prof. Gerry Breshears's framework for what it means to be "Calminian", or rather, a Christian who holds the sovereignty of God and the free will God affords to man in a healthy tension. To read more about his views, you can check out this document: https://www.dropbox.com/s/725jk999gbk6vnw/Calminian.doc?dl=0 On the next episode, we will dive into the question: "isn't God allowing suffering just as bad as causing it?" All this and more on the GoodLion Podcast!
Why does God seem violent in the Old Testament and loving in the New Testament? Why did Uzzah, Annias, and Saphira have to die? Is Greg Boyd's cruciform hermeneutic a good way to read scripture, or does it cause some troubling issues? We ask Prof. Gerry Breshears of Western Seminary these hard question and more on today's GoodLion Podcast!
