Today we are joined by two guests to chat about the latest book they have co-written, An Unexpected Grace Book 3 in the Jewels of Kalispell series. We've visited with both of them individually before, and we're so excited to have them on together today. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Tracie Peterson is the bestselling author of more than 100 novels, both historical and contemporary, with more than 6 million copies sold. She has won the ACFW Lifetime Achievement Award and the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her avid research resonates in her many bestselling series. Tracie and her family make their home in Montana. Kimberley Woodhouse is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than forty fiction and nonfiction books. She has won The Carol Award, The Reader's Choice Award, The Holt Medallion, and has finaled in the Selah Awards and the Spur Awards. She is passionate about Bible study, reading, music, cooking, and pretty-much-all-things-crafty. Kim and her incredible husband of thirty-plus years live in Colorado, where they play golf together, spend time with their kids and grandbaby, and research all the history around them. Co-Writers and Friends It's fascinating what makes a good co-writing team, and Tracie and Kim are no exception. They start the interview by sharing about their process, and how they each contribute to research and writing; but, more than that, they share how their friendship supports them in all areas of their lives. Kalispell, Montana As we discuss the third book in this series, Tracie and Kim share about their time in the northern Montana town of Kalispell. Each of the books features a particular landmark of the historic town -- in this case, the opera house. We learn more about the settling of Montana, what kept Kalispell on the map, and all about their research trip to the opera house. When Callings Clash An Unexpected Grace explores what it means to be called by God to a particular path in life -- and how those callings sometimes clash with those closest to us. Tracie and Kim never neglect the faith thread in their stories, even diving into complex aspects of our faith. A Show-Stealing Side Character When we asked Tracie and Kim if they had a favorite side character in this story, they both immediately came up with the same name. Learn which character stole their hearts (and readers'), and why they've come to love her so much. Connect with Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse at their websites, where you can find their newsletters, blogs, and social media links. About the Book Can unexpected grace lay the foundation for a second chance at love? After a decade away, Parker Bennett returns home with a traveling troupe to perform a play based on Uncle Tom's Cabin at the Kalispell Opera House. Parker has relished his life on the road, but being home awakens long-buried emotions when he encounters his first love, Johanna St. John. He can't help but wonder if there might still be a place for him in her heart. Widowed for three years, Johanna devotes all her time to a demanding toddler, an injured father, and a successful millinery business. After the loss of her husband, she desires to move on, but reconnecting with her past love leaves her unsure of what lies ahead. Both committed to God's distinct calling on their lives, Johanna and Parker struggle to see how their futures can unite, and when strange things start happening around town, their second chance at a life together seems more unlikely than ever. The book tells the story of her sister Becky - born with brain damage at birth - whose life was marked by both difficulty and transformation, humor and resilience. Kathleen shares what it was like to grow up alongside Becky, how storytelling became a way of honoring her full humanity, and why persistence was necessary to bring this book into the world. Along the way, she reflects on grief, community, the role of faith, and the ways we learn to see people not through labels or limitations, but in the fullness of who they are. This is a conversation about love, loss, and the surprising grace that emerges when we pay attention to every story - even the ones we're tempted to overlook.Kathleen Norris is the award-winning poet, writer, and author of the New York Times bestselling books The Cloister Walk, Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Virgin of Bennington, and several volumes of poetry. Exploring the spiritual life, her work is at once intimate and historical, rich in poetry and meditations, brimming with exasperation and reverence, deeply grounded in both nature and spirit, sometimes funny, and often provocative.Widowed in 2003, Kathleen Norris now divides her time between South Dakota and Honolulu, Hawaii, where she is a member of an Episcopal church. She travels to the mainland regularly to speak to students, medical professionals, social workers, and chaplains at colleges and universities, as well as churches and teaching hospitals. For many years she was the poetry editor of Spirituality & Health magazine. She serves as an editorial advisor for the monthly Give Us This Day from Liturgical Press, and writes for a weekly e-newsletter, Soul Telegram: Movies & Meaning with her friend Irish storyteller Gareth Higgins.Kathleen's Book:Rebecca SueSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Widowed people may or may not find love again. If they do, often they face judgment, saying they are being disrespectful to the memory of their loved one. On the other hand, some can't understand why they may decide to never love another person. The bottom line is that it's really nobody's business. In my case, I did choose to love again, and this is why...

In this week's episode, I'm joined by Phillipa and Hazel, the brilliant duo behind Music to Die For, a beautiful project exploring how music connects us to those we've lost. Phillipa lost her husband Rob suddenly four and a half years ago. What's fascinating is that music - which had been her whole life as a musician and teacher - completely disappeared after Rob died. But it came back in the most powerful ways. Hazel, a clinical psychologist with a deep love of music, met Phillipa at a grief and music think tank. Their instant connection sparked Music to Die For, where people share stories about pieces of music that connect them to someone they've lost. This is such a beautiful conversation about how music supports us through grief and helps us stay connected to our loved ones. In this episode we explore: Why music either becomes our greatest comfort or completely disappears after loss How grief is our brain learning to rewire without our person - and why it takes so much longer than society expects The beautiful reframe: "grief has taught me how to live" rather than learning to live with grief How Music to Die For creates a safe space for sharing stories and feeling less alone Their plans for retreats, walking weekends, and a book of 365 musical stories Why music helps us "time travel" to precious memories whilst building new ones Resources mentioned: Music to Die For: https://www.musictodiefor.co.uk/ (free to share your story) Widowed and Walking UK Facebook group "The Grieving Brain" by Mary Frances O'Connor For More Support: The Widows Membership: karensutton.co.uk/the-widow-membership Coaching and retreats: karensutton.co.uk

Women's History, Episode #1 of 4. In 1987, the last reported instance of sati threw India into a maelstrom of furious debate and conflict following the ritual suicide of Roop Kanwar after her young husband's death. Nearly 150 years earlier, British colonial officer Lord William Bentinck passed a prohibition on sati in British India. As Roop Kanwar's death suggests, British colonial rule did not end the practice of sati in India - not at the time of that prohibition, not in the 30 years that followed as the British East India Company tried to expand their influence into the subcontinent Rajputs that were nominally autonomous, and not before, during, or after Indian independence. Widowed girls and women (and yes, we'll come back to the specificity of girls and women later) continued to climb onto their dead husband's funeral pyres and burn alive, whether because they believed it was their duty, because they felt they had no other choice, because they couldn't face a future where their widowhood would be socially and culturally enforced until they died anyway, or because their religious fervor and/or grief moved them to suicide by fire. The history - and experience - of sati in India is complicated, made more so by the ham-fisted intervention of British colonialism, the rise of Hindu nationalism in the late nineteenth century, and the growth of a feminist movement - involving both European and Indian women - in the twentieth century. In this episode, Rosie speaks to guest host Orla Blackburn—a self-proclaimed “feckless” adult whose life veered sharply off course after losing her partner, Andy, to cancer. What follows is a no-holds-barred conversation packed with bruising honesty, dry humour, and the kind of emotional realness that defines Widowed AF.Orla doesn't sugar-coat a thing—from cheap wine in foreign campsites to the relentless slog of diagnoses, impossible medical decisions, and the numbing admin of death. She lays bare the daily grind of solo parenting a neurodivergent son, the silence that follows undelivered casseroles, and the deep loneliness that creeps in once the world moves on.Together, Rosie and Orla navigate the mess of grief: a care system that fumbles the dying, the emotional landmines of funerals and family rifts, and the jaw-clenching terror of financial freefall. But amid the chaos, there's also resilience—and even absurdity. Orla shares how tear-streaked yoga classes became her unlikely sanctuary, and how new routines, messy reinvention, and a raw, unfiltered widowed community helped her start to rebuild. There's hope in here too—fierce, practical optimism for anyone parenting through loss.If this episode resonates, you're not alone. Subscribe, share it with someone in the trenches, or just take a breath. We're all muddling through—one step, one form, one funeral at a time.
