To true fans, baseball is so much more than a sport. Some call it the perfect game. Some see it as a field of dreams. A portal to another dimension. Some see it as a road to God. Others—”heathen” we might call them—find the game unutterably boring. Too confusing, too long, too nit-picky about rules. In this episode, Yankee fan John Sexton (President Emeritus of New York University and Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law) joins Red Sox fan Evan Rosa to discuss the philosophical and spiritual aspects of baseball. John is the author of the 2013 bestselling book Baseball as a Road to God, which is based on a course he has taught at NYU for over twenty years.Image Credit: “The American National Game of Base Ball: Grand Match for the Championship at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken, N. A legal scholar by training, he served as president of New York University from 2001 through 2015. He is now NYU's Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law and dean emeritus of the Law School, having served as dean from 1988 through 2002.He is author of Standing for Reason: The University in a Dogmatic Age (Yale University Press, 2019) and Baseball as a Road to God: Seeing Beyond the Game (Gotham Books, 2013) (with Thomas Oliphant and Peter J. Schwartz), among other books in legal studies.A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of 24 honorary degrees, President Emeritus Sexton is past chair of the American Council on Education, the Independent Colleges of NY, the New York Academy of Science, and the Federal Reserve Board of NY.In 2016, Commonweal Magazine honored Sexton as the Catholic in the Public Square. The previous year, the Arab-American League awarded him its Khalil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Award; and the Open University of Israel gave him it's Alon Prize for “inspired leadership in the field of education.” In 2013, Citizens Union designated him as “an outstanding leader who enhances the value of New York City.”He received a BA in history and a PhD in the history of American religion from Fordham University, and a JD magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Before coming to NYU in 1981, he clerked for Judges Harold Leventhal and David Bazelon of the DC Circuit and Chief Justice Warren Burger. He married Lisa Goldberg in 1976. Preaching for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Karen Sue Smith offers a reflection on our role - inspired by Mary - as bearers of God's promise: "We believe that the promise/fulfillment process continues. God lives among us and within us here and now. Like Mary, we are called to be God-bearers, to make God's compassion and justice real and present in our world. How? Answering that question requires discernment, as we discover what gifts God has given us and how best to use them. But all the basics--in the Sermon on the Mount or from Jesus' own works of mercy, justice, and community-building – are clear enough. We need to consent and persist…." Karen Sue Smith is a retired writer and editor with nearly 30 years of experience working in the Catholic press. She served in full time capacities as editorial director at America Magazine; editor of CHURCH Magazine from National Pastoral Life Center; and associate editor at Commonweal Magazine. She earned her Master of Divinity at Harvard University and a Master of Arts in Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Jake and Phil are joined live at Fairfield University by the great critic and essayist George Scialabba to discuss Last Men and Women At a time of war, impending ecological disaster, and partisan rage, our commitments to the modern, liberal order are being questioned like never before. Do we understand ourselves best as individuals or as members of a community? Must we renew our absolute commitment to political freedoms, or accept greater state control to deal with the dangers and allures of new technologies? Should the future be post-liberal, neo-liberal, or some other, perhaps more frightening and electrifying possibility? For the past forty-four years the critic George Scialabba has been engaging in arguments with both the critics and proponents of modernity, staking out a commitment to liberty and mass democracy even in light of powerful challenges. On December 4th at 4:30pm George Scialabba will join Phil Klay and Jacob Siegel for a live recording of Manifesto! A Podcast. The three will discuss the price we pay for modern liberalism, and George's commitment to it nonetheless (the essay “Last Men and Women,” originally for Commonweal Magazine and included in his latest book, Only A Voice, published by Verso Books, outlines the basics of his argument) https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/last-men-and-women George Scialabba is the quintessential critic's critic, an outrageously learned and subtle thinker whose stylish, witty and elegantly argued reviews have served as guides to the modern age for generations of writers and intellectuals. Christopher Hitchens, Norman Rush, James Wood, and Vivian Gornick have all declared themselves devotees—while Richard Rorty declared his essays “models of moral inquiry.” An award-winning essayist and critic, his writing has appeared in the Nation, Dissent, bookforum, Riritan, n+1, and the Boston Review among many others. He is a Contributing Editor at the Baffler and the author of six essay collections and a memoir, How to Be Depressed.
Episode 68 of Messy Jesus Business podcast, with Sister Julia Walsh. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Google Podcasts | Email | RSS | More IN THIS EPISODE In this episode of the Messy Jesus Business podcast, Sister Julia Walsh, FSPA, talks with Vincent J. Miller, the Gudorf Chair of Catholic Theology and Culture at the University of Dayton. Vincent shares how his studies awoke him to the harm technology and consumption can lead to; the impetus that, in order to explore deeper questions, changed his course from engineering to theology. Regarding consumer culture, Vincent says that although every material good has an origin story, “the world we live in makes us see certain things and hides other things from us.” Sister Julia and Vincent also explore how, even though awareness can be painful, global and relational consciousness is part of what it means to be Christian. They delve into the sorrow and horror of war, climate crises and environmental destruction, and how the spiritual response is to be centered in relationality, to respond to calls to love and hope. “We're called to be part of the community of creation, and we're called to realize the pain we're putting onto creation,” Vincent says, adding that because of the brokenness of our planet, people and systems, we are meant to “embrace the blemished world and learn to love there." ABOUT THE GUEST Vincent Miller is the Gudorf Chair in Catholic Theology and Culture at the University of Dayton in Ohio. He is the author of Consuming Religion: Christian Faith and Practice in a Consumer Culture and editor of The Theological and Ecological Vision of Laudato Si': Everything is Connected. He lives with his family in Dayton and is a regular contributor to America Magazine and Commonweal Magazine. Vincent has been featured in many publications as well as television and radio programs that include The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic Monthly, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Guardian, Il Foglio, CNN, NPR, BBC, the O'Reilly Factor and Mongabay.Vincent Miller's article on the Oregon fires in Commonweal: https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/tears-ashes MESSY JESUS BUSINESS is hosted by Sister Julia Walsh. There are so many theories about why young adults are leaving the Catholic Church today. Maybe our parishes aren't welcoming enough, or maybe they're watering down the faith. Maybe young people are being asked to do too much to be part of the community. Or maybe they're not being asked to do enough. Maybe they're angry at the church's positions on social issues. Or maybe they just drift away because they don't find anything relevant at church. It can be challenging to offer grand, sweeping theories about young adults and the church because we're talking about millions of people. Young adults aren't monolithic. But there is some good quantitative and qualitative data we can work with, and today's guest is uniquely equipped to offer some compelling arguments. Ellen Koneck is the executive director of Commonweal Magazine, the venerable Catholic journal of opinion that celebrates its 100th birthday next year. She's an incredibly insightful writer with experience in pastoral ministry, making her an astute observer of the reasons her fellow young adults slip out the church door. She also took over her role at Commonweal after working as head writer at the Springtide Research Institute, which does some of the best statistical work on young people and the church you can find anywhere. Ellen combined her wealth of experiences and observations into a talk she gave this past April for the Catholic Common Ground Initiative in Chicago. Ellen and host Mike Jordan Laskey recently had a wide-ranging conversation on why church membership is a bad metric for measuring youth involvement in faith, why the problem of polarization might not be as crucial to address as alienation, and how Commonweal is trying to reach a new generation of readers. At the intersections of the familial and the sacred, The Convert's Heart is Good to Eat reminds us that what is created is also consumed. Beautiful, sensory, and aching, this collection reminds us that not all hungers are mortal ones." – Traci Brimhall, author of Our Lady of the Ruins

Special Guest: Adrian Bonenberger In this FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ episode recorded specifically to coincide with Memorial Day, the Buzzards have a heavy full metal discussion with author and teacher Adrian Bonenberger, a Yale graduate with a B.A. in English, who then joined the U.S. Army for seven years. Adrian spent twenty-five months in Afghanistan in the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 10th Mountain Division and was awarded two bronze stars, three army commendation medals (one for valor in combat), and an army achievement medal. Post military career, Adrian wrote "Afghan Post: A Memoir" about his first hand experiences through a series of letters he writes to friends, family and others. He also was the co-editor and contributor of an anthology of fiction by and about veterans called "The Road Ahead." He has published essays for the New York Times, Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Commonweal Magazine, Forbes Magazine, Deadspin's Concourse, among others. He took his MS in Journalism from Columbia, and his MFA in Creative Writing at SUNY Stony Brook Southampton. George, Pete and Roger are joined by Buzzard-on-the-beat, Tom Taylor, who each get to give their two cents on Afghanistan, war movies, the treatment of soldiers coming home from battle, the military-industrial complex, major corporation influence, and so much more. It was difficult to fit everything we wanted to talk about into one episode. We see another one down the horizon (Veteran's Day, perhaps!). By all means, the Buzzards have different perspectives and opinions in regards to the military, war and the politics surrounding them. But that's what makes this a great country (as so pointed out by Adrian himself) in that we can each freely voice those differences. For that, we can all agree to salute those that have served this Memorial Day. It's what makes all podcasts from the U.S., let alone ours, possible. So, throw those vegan dogs on the grill, have an ice cold White Claw in hand, pluck in those wireless airpods and listen to another episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. If you have any questions or comments about this episode or others or have any great ideas for topics and guests please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@GMAIL.COM. We will surely get back to you, double-time, soldier!
Dr. Daniel Walden returns to Public Theologians Podcast, this time to discuss his recent article in Commonweal Magazine, titled Gender, Sex and Other Nonsense. In this episode we discuss how our various orthodox Catholic and Protestant Christian theologies can quite easily make space for the experience of our Transgender friends, family, fellow Christians and, well, fellow humans. We also discuss fun topics such as Lockian philosophy, why Protestants tend to favor noted war criminal Oliver North over the patron saint of children, Fred Rogers, and more! The College of the Holy Cross hired him in 1998. As a scholar, he began his career in the field of literary modernism and is widely recognized as an authority on the poet T. S. Eliot. Over the past decade, though, he has devoted considerable time to Shakespeare. He is the father of two daughters, Eleanor (HC '20) and Briana. He and his wife, Kate, have been married for thirty years. A committed Roman Catholic, he serves regularly as an extraordinary minister at Saint Paul's Cathedral, in downtown Worcester.

A conversation with George Dennis O'Brien (University of Rochester) and Mark Alznauer (Northwestern University). John F. Kennedy once quipped that a Catholic would be president of the United States before a Catholic would be president of Harvard. As the Catholic president of two secular universities, Dennis O'Brien was a trailblazer. In this interview, O'Brien discusses his long career in higher education as a Catholic, a philosopher, and an administrator, with reflections on the past, present, and future of American higher education. O'Brien was raised in a south-side Chicago parish in the 1930s and 1940s. Educated at Yale, he came to the University of Chicago to write a PhD on Hegel. He was appointed president of Bucknell in 1976 and the University of Rochester in 1984. O'Brien's varied career offers a fascinating window onto the history of American higher education in the twentieth century. Philosopher and fellow Hegelian Mark Alznauer will conduct this interview, focusing on higher education both Catholic and secular, as well as O'Brien's experiences growing up in Chicago and attending the University of Chicago. Cosponsored by Commonweal Magazine, and the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University. This event is presented by the Lumen Christi Institute Forum on the Church in Higher Education as part of its Liberal Arts Colloquium. This event was presented as a live webinar December 9, 2020.
