In this episode, I talk to Gregory B. Sadler. Through his public speaking, content production (including videos for a YouTube channel with over 150,000 subscribers), consulting, and philosophical counseling, Greg makes classical and contemporary philosophy accessible to non-philosophers.I really enjoyed this conversation, in which we mainly discussed the many misconceptions there are about what Stoicism really is. Greg did a great job of clearing these misunderstandings up, so I think this will be a really useful episode for those who want to learn more about Stoicism to listen to. I hope you enjoy.

Gregory B. Sadler has taught and designed Philosophy, Humanities, Religious Studies, Literature, and Critical Thinking courses for over 20 years. Jesper became interested in Greg's work when he searched for Self-Directed Learning and, by chance, found Greg's YouTube channel dedicated to self-directed learning in Philosophy.  Greg Sadler brings a fresh perspective to our lively discussion on how ancient wisdom parallels modern self-help and the ever-evolving education journey. We peel back the layers of philosophy's public image, addressing stereotypes and the ironic complexities of communication within the field. GregOur conversation takes a turn through the less-traveled paths of self-education in philosophy, guiding those embarking on their intellectual quests. We debunk the solitary philosopher's myth, revealing the discipline's communal nature and its relevance to contemporary life. Whether you're a seasoned philosopher or a curious newcomer, Greg offers insights into navigating the works of Plato and Nietzsche and the approachability of online resources like his 'Half Hour Hegel' series, which offers companionship in the sometimes lonely pursuit of knowledge. As we wrap up our philosophical exploration, literature's profound impact on us stands out. Together with Greg, we reflect on how our understanding of texts like 'The Great Gatsby' or Nietzsche's works evolves.

This lecture discusses Plato's work, The Apology. In that work, Socrates is on trial, defending himself against charges of impiety and corrupting the young of Athens. He refutes those charges, and also narrates the story of how he ended up doing philosophy. In this particular lecture we discuss the refutation Socrates makes against Meletus' charge that he has corrupted the young people of Athens. Sadler on YouTube: www.youtube.com/gbisadler. Born in Rocken, in Prussia in 1844, Nietzsche set out his career in philology but later turned to writing idiosyncratic philosophical treatise and collections of aphorisms. He directed these against the pious dogmas of Christianity and traditional philosophy. He saw both as self-serving veils drawn over the harsher realities of life. He felt we needed not a high moral or theological ideals but a deeply critical form of cultural genealogy that would uncover the reasons why we humans are as we are and how we have come to be this way. He believed that every great philosopher actually a kind of involuntary and unconscious memoir rather than conducting an impersonal search for knowledge. Studying our own moral genealogy cannot help us escape or transcend ourselves but it can enable us to see our illusions more clearly and lead a more vital, assertive existence. There is no God in this picture. The human beings who created God have also killed him. It is now up to us alone. The way to live is not to throw ourselves into faith but into our own lives, conducting them in affirmation of every moment, exactly as it without wishing anything was different and without harbouring resentment for others or our fate (Sarah Bakewell, The Existentialist Cafe, p.19-20). Part I. What is the philosophical underpinning of Nietzsche? (36:40 in Part I), Part II. An Introduction to Nietzsche’s Thought (50:00 in Part I), Part III. What can Nietzsche teach us? (00:05 in Part II), Part IV. Further Analysis and Discussion. (28:15 in Part II).

Gregory Sadler joins me for a conversation about Stoicism and anger. We talk about the negative consequences of anger; how to reduce anger and stress; how to better handle testing situations; benefits of a more content mindset; and much more. Gregory B. Sadler is a philosopher, consultant, speaker, and online content producer. He served as a Combat Engineer in the US Army, then attended and graduated from Lakeland College with a degree in Philosophy and Mathematics. He went on to earn a Masters and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. After his graduate work, for six years, he taught Philosophy and Religious Studies for Ball State University's extended education 4-year degree program, at Indiana State Prison. He then moved down to Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, where in addition to teaching Critical Thinking and Philosophy classes, he coordinated university-wide assessment, wrote portions of the 10 year Quality Enhancement plan, and began designing and facilitating workshops for educators.  In 2011, he left FSU and moved up to the Hudson Valley in New York, in order to marry a woman he first met back in high school, whose paths had crossed with his several times during the intervening years. With her, he founded an educational consulting company, ReasonIO (bringing philosophy into practice) at https://reasonio.wordpress.com/ My Stoic Philosophy series explores the tradition of Stoicism with goals to inform, empower, and help others benefit from practical wisdom of Ancient Greek, Roman, and modern thinkers including Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca. For the Stoics, a main focus is pursuing virtue to attain a well-examined life through practical applications of Philosophy – acting with good character, using reason to form accurate careful judgments about the world, and achieving contentment. Stoic writers focus on many perennial human concerns and urge people to take action applying what they learn to everyday life. Self-improvement is central to Stoic thought – strengthening and improving one's mindset.
