Three major commemorations converged last week: the birth of the Anabaptist movement, the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. (and the broader movement of which he was part, including our Anabaptist ancestors, Rosemarie and Vincent Harding), and the anniversary of the first national collective action of Mennonite Action. Thanks to the Pastoral Team for Mennonite Action, we notice a thread through these significant commemorations: “the willingness of ordinary people to take actions that simultaneously speak a no and a yes.” Another story for today: fisherfolk in Luke's gospel who leave everything (including a mountain of fish, representing a mountain of wealth) to follow Jesus. God, grant us wisdom and courage as we join these many ancestors of ours in walking a path that says NO to security and status quo and YES to the risky, uncertain, and liberating Way of Jesus.Sermon begins at 6:14Scripture: Luke 5:1–11ResourcesThis sermon was taken whole cloth (with some of my own riffs added) from “Prayers for a significant week” from the Mennonite Action Pastoral Team, January 20, 2025.Anabaptist Community BibleEpiscopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde imploring President Trump to “have mercy” on immigrants and LGBTQ people targeted by his policies, at the end of her inaugural prayer service sermon in the National Cathedral, Washington D.C.: video clip linked here. The Movement Makes Us Human: An Interview with Dr. Vincent Harding on Mennonites, Vietnam, and MLK, Joanna Shenk, Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2018Remnants: A Memoir of Spirit, Activism, and Mothering, Rosemarie Freeney Harding, with Rachel Elizabeth Harding, Duke University Press, 2015.BibleWorm podcast: Episode 623 - The Call of Simon, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, Jrothers?Image: covers of the two Harding books noted aboveHymn 57 Holy Spirit, Come with Power. The Divine Missions How do you envision a triune God carrying out the divine missions? Do you picture the Son and Spirit departing the throne room—lunchboxes in hand—only to return to Heaven in the evening and report to the Father? If so, how might we understand our communion with God or the presence of Jesus in the heart of a believer? To approach this level of contemplation, Jonathan and James welcome Dr. Adonis Vidu. The author and associate professor of theology at Gordon-Conwell Seminary builds on the content of his recent book on inseparable operations to help readers comprehend the divine missions as the presence of God united with a created being, which provides a foretaste of the banquet that is one day to come. Wipf and Stock Publishers have provided for giveaway several copies of The Divine Missions: An Introduction. Register here for the opportunity to receive one.

Simon Constam is a Toronto poet and aphorist. His first book of poetry, BROUGHT DOWN, was published in January 2022, by Wipf and Stock Publishers. Its early reviews have been exceptional! Kevin John Hart, Anglo-Australian theologian, philosopher, and poet, “Some of the poems remind me, in the best way, of poems by Yehuda Amichai and Nelly Sachs. . . . From time to time, I also was reminded of some of the later poems of R. S. Thomas.” He has published poetry in a number of magazines, among them The Jewish Literary Journal, long con magazine, the Dark Poets Club, and Poetica Magazine. Since late 2018, he has been publishing, under the moniker Daily Ferocity, an original aphorism every day on Instagram and for an email subscriber base. In early 2023, Simon's first two books of aphorisms, The Love Aphorisms and The Book of Dark Ideas, will be published. This week we discuss the case that was the inspiration for the movies The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Requiem, and Anneliese the Exorcist Tapes.Anneliese Michel was a devout Roman Catholic from Bavaria that began experiencing seizures, and hallucinations. After seeing several specialists and being diagnosed with epilepsy, her symptoms worsened in 1975. Anneliese began refusing to eat or drink, ate bugs, and developed an intense aversion to any religious items.Between 1975 to 1976, Anneliese underwent 67 exorcisms conducted by Father Alt and Father Renz, who believed she was possessed. Anneliese and her family believed the same, and Anneliese began praying rigorously to save herself. On July 1st, 1976, Anneliese died from dehydration, starvation, and physical exertion, leading to four individuals getting charged with negligent homicide. If you liked what you heard today, share our podcast with someone you hate... Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 484: Brent Peterson - The Back Side of the Cross Amazon Affiliate Buy Link: https://amzn.to/3BSV9tT The Back Side of the Cross: An Atonement Theology for the Abused and Abandoned Leclerc, Diane; Peterson, Brent Citation (Chicago Style): Leclerc, Diane, and Peterson, Brent. The Back Side of the Cross: An Atonement Theology for the Abused and Abandoned. Cascade Books, an imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2022. Kindle edition. Book Description The cross has always been portrayed as the means of salvation and forgiveness for sinners, but does it have anything to say to those who have been sinned against? This book shows that the atonement of Christ has powerful potential to speak to those who have been wronged, especially those who have been abused and abandoned in countless ways—those who cower at the back side of the cross wondering if they are included. As victims of various kinds of abuse are beginning to come out of the shadows in cultural conversation and in the context of the church, The Back Side of the Cross is a timely book for several audiences. It is thoroughly rigorous and will interest theologians and their students; it also offers a very practical section for pastors and those who want to care for the wounded; and it can even reach survivors themselves as it offers true hope in the urgency of such real pain. About the Co-Author Brent Peterson is Dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries and Professor of Theology at Northwest Nazarene University. He is a leading voice in the Wesleyan tradition on the sacraments, and founded the Wesleyan Liturgical Society. Jeremiah discusses the book he co-authored with Wesley M. Pinkham, entitled "Relational Christianity: A Remarkable Vision of God," recently published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This brief introduction discusses the relationality of the Trinity, and how that translates into the foundational relationality of Christianity and human existence.

Hey friends! It's time for another grad school/Conversations mash up! I will be chatting about the impact of the Kinsey Report (first of its kind report on human sexuality, late 1940s/early 1950s) on Christian thought, particularly in American contexts. Because this is a research paper, I share all of my citations in the video, and below in this description. If you want the TL:DR, the Kinsey Reports galvanized two distinct and opposing theological interpretations of the Biblical view of sexuality, particularly in regard to queerness. I assert that the Kinsey reports inspired a virulent and boisterous anti LGBTQ strain of Christianity that is interconnected to themes of Christian Nationalism, Patriarchy, and Patriotism. At the same time, the Kinsey Report empowered liberal protestants to engage their theology in conversation with the developing understanding of humanity. By contrast, conservatives coalesced around staunch opposition to progress in any form. I propose that, as a result of comprehensive and ongoing research, it is evident that queerness is not condemned by Christianity in antiquity.Anti LGBTQ religious rhetoric is a result of anachronistic readings of the scripture. The freedom and diversity of queerness is opposed by the American Evangelical constellation of churches because it frees individuals from peonage to the church. I look forward to hearing your thoughts after you have listened to this video! - Leo Works Cited (in order of reference in video) 1) Johnson, Robert C. “Kinsey vs. Christianity: A Clash of ‘Paradigms' on Human Nature.” Quarterly Journal of Speech, vol. 61, no. 1, 1975, pp. 59–70., https://doi.org/10.1080/00335637509383269. 2) Griffith, R., 2008.
