Episode 78 of Messy Jesus Business podcast, with Sister Julia Walsh. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Email | RSS | More Forgiveness is a process, not a product." -Kaya Oakes IN THIS EPISODE In this episode of Messy Jesus Business podcast, Sister Julia Walsh FSPA chats with Kaya Oakes. Their conversation goes into the issues and ideas about forgiveness that Kaya explores in her new book, Not So Sorry. To her, forgiveness is often an expected act that doesn't include avenues for processing. Kaya discusses "restorative justice as a model for a collaborative kind of forgiveness that I think is closer to what Jesus was talking about." Later in the podcast she adds, "it's like him saying give yourself time and space to decide what God's calling you to do." Sister Julia and Kaya also talk about Kaya's breast cancer. She talks about the frustrations of the process of diagnosis and treatment, as well as how dealing with a serious medical need requires more than just individual action. As Kaya says, "you don't survive cancer without a community." But sometimes it just doesn't feel like forgiveness may be warranted or deserved, such as in cases of abuse or when someone commits murder or mass evil. Calling for forgiveness can feel like a way to excuse problematic behavior and center the perpetrator rather than the victim. In addition to being an accomplished writer, frequent Commonweal contributor Clifford Thompson is also a self-taught painter. On this episode, Thompson speaks with associate editor Griffin Oleynick about his first solo gallery show in New York City. Using Thompson's art as a jumping-off point, they touch on a range of topics, including music, film, race, and the madness of American politics. Then, in a special segment, Kaya Oakes speaks briefly with special projects editor Miles Doyle about Doris Grumbach's memorable portrait of Dorothy Day. When told by older women that she would one day settle into her age and things would get easier, author Kaya Oakes thought, “Apparently at some point I would reach a magical age when I had ‘no fucks left to give.' But no one had warned me that before I hit that magical age, I'd have to survive my forties.” If it's not your face falling down, your bladder starting a coup, your hair falling out, or needing waaaaay too much sleep (I mean, this is unreasonable, isn't it?), then it's dealing with feeling invisible, grappling with your identity shifts, and wondering if it's only going to get worse. Now don't get me wrong, I know I have it easy. I know being in my forties is far from the end of the world. But something is for sure changing and I don't hear a bunch of folks talking about it. In fact, when I look at social media, television, or other media, middle-age women seem to be visible only when advertising fiber supplements. Try searching any stock photo site for middle-age women and you'll get a ton of women in their nineties… almost like we've been erased. In this candid and very non-expert discussion, I chat with my very best friend, Andrea Owen, on what we've been processing as we process changes of mid-life. This episode is an inside look into two 40-somethings discussing what it feels like to constantly advocate for your health, reckon with physical changes, and what we actually love most about aging. If you've been wandering around like, “What is this body!? What is this life!?” then pull up an ear, my friend. You are not alone. This pod explores: Understanding the “ambiguous grief” of navigating changes in your forties The currency of beauty and youth in our culture and how that affects you as you age How we each approach feminism as we find botox and fillers more appealing The connection between the personal growth industry and being transparent about middle age ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! For every woman, from the young to those in midlife and beyond, who has ever been told, You can't and thought, Oh, I definitely will!--this book is for you. Women are expected to be many things. They should be young enough, but not too young; old enough, but not too old; creative, but not crazy; passionate, but not angry. They should be fertile and feminine and self-reliant, not barren or butch or solitary. Women, in other words, are caught between social expectations and a much more complicated reality. Women who don't fit in, whether during life transitions or because of changes in their body, mind, or gender identity, are carving out new ways of being in and remaking the world. But this is nothing new: they have been doing so for thousands of years, often at the margins of the same religious traditions and cultures that created these limited ways of being for women in the first place. In The Defiant Middle: How Women Claim Life's In-Betweens to Remake the World (Broadleaf Books, 2021), Kaya Oakes draws on the wisdom of women mystics and explores how transitional eras or living in marginalized female identities can be both spiritually challenging and wonderfully freeing, ultimately resulting in a reinvented way of seeing the world and changing it. Change, after all, Oakes writes, always comes from the margins. Learn more about your ad choices. With another year of the podcast, the pandemic, and American decline in the rearview, we turn to Know Your Enemy's absurdly brilliant listeners for guidance and intellectual stimulation. That's right, folks, it's a mailbag episode! And thanks to you, our cups runneth over with fascinating questions. Along the way, we discuss the intellectual legacy of one-time National Review wunderkind Garry Wills; why Bill Buckley never wrote a great book; right-wing half-wit propagandists like Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk; conservative feminism; Richard Nixon's role in conservative history; Vatican II; Bob Dylan's artful incoherence; our favorite books; and our favorite bourbons. We also take a few minutes to discuss listener feedback from our last episode with Nate Hochman. We are truly blessed with the most curious, sophisticated, and intellectually voracious listeners in the podcast game. We love you freaks so very much. So strap in! Like the year 2021, it's a wild ride, with many twists, turns, and digressions. Further Reading:Matthew Sitman, "There Will Be No Buckley Revival," Commonweal, Jul 28, 2015. Mary did you know we'd soften all your hard edges? Temper your anger? Moderate your radicalism? To be a woman has always meant being caught between expectation and reality — between all that society says you should be and all that you believe you are not. In this episode, Katelyn and Roxy ask themselves what they like about being women — and how embracing those qualities can be revolutionary. They are joined by author Kaya Oakes to talk about how women — past and present — are so often being shaped into the image men want. Including the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. The November issue of Commonweal featured a special package of stories on Catholic religious communities in the broadest sense of the term, including religious orders, secular institutes, lay ecclesial movements, pious houses, and houses of hospitality. Despite the variety of communities surveyed, some key themes emerged: the difficulty of adapting to new circumstances, the relationship of community to place, and a sense of hope in the face of precariousness and uncertainty. On this special podcast episode, we're joined by editors and writers—including Paul Elie and Kaya Oakes—who helped put that issue together.

Sister Julia Walsh and author Kaya Oakes discuss the importance of being humble and the value of vulnerability in discipleship, in this episode of Messy Jesus Business.
Decades in a room with no way out was a choice for anchoresses like Julian of Norwich during the Middle Ages, but it doesn’t mean it was easy. Writers Paul Dafydd Jones and Kaya Oakes explore what it means to be patient in the time of a pandemic and what mystics like Julian of Norwich have to teach us.

This week, we talk to Kaya Oakes, a contributing writer for America and a teacher at the University of California, Berkeley. Kaya is the author of The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Believers, Seekers, and Those in Between on the religiously unaffiliated or religious “nones.” Most recently, she wrote an article on spiritual direction and why so many non-Christians are seeking the practice. We talk to Kaya about Ignatian spiritual direction, her training to become a spiritual director and more. In Signs of the Times, we discuss the appointment of Cardinal Luis Tagle, a.k.a. “Chito,” as the prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples; Nancy Pelosi’s viral “As a Catholic” moment; the Nativity scene depicting Mary, Jesus and Joseph in cages; new research on how the gap between church attendance among the poorest and richest in America has grown since the 1970s; and how Blue Christmas services can help people struggling during the holidays. Native Californian (and Catholic writer) Kaya Oakes stopped by our offices a few weeks ago. She spoke with associate editor Matt Sitman about what it's like to live, think, and write from her perch at the other end of the country. Noting the utopian thrust of California culture, Oakes explains how religion and spirituality continue to lurk beneath the surface of her state's supposedly laid-back, secular ethos. Plus, Dominic talks with managing editor Kate Lucky about her new feature on the last living Shakers, now online (and forthcoming in the December issue).
Preaching for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Kaya Oakes, offers three insights from the passage about the woman “caught” in adultery: 1. “Jesus instead chooses not to condemn her. And that’s not the same thing as forgiveness, because, perhaps, in her case, there’s nothing for him to forgive;” 2. “What if she didn’t do it?... It’s entirely possible the ‘adultery’ this anonymous woman was caught in was really something else,” and 3. “the woman never asks for forgiveness. Unlike those who’ve been accused, who’ve been found guilty and who have publicly begged for forgiveness, she is silent, until Jesus asks who has really condemned her, and her answer is no one.” This leads Oakes to conclude, “It’s no coincidence that our other readings today are about new ways of doing things, new ways of seeing ourselves and the world around us.” She ends: “Our newness might look like this: that we might speak, and be believed, instead of being dismissed. That when we’re falsely condemned, judged, or criticized, we might stop condemning ourselves. That we might not be condemned for things we did not do, but instead be set free. That we might learn to atone rather than apologize when we have actually done real harm. That we might get, for the first time, to tell our own stories, instead of having them told.” Kaya Oakes teaches nonfiction writing at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of four books, including Slanted and Enchanted: The Evolution of Indie Culture (Henry Holt, 2009); Radical Reinvention: An Unlikely Return to the Catholic Church (Counterpoint Press, 2012); and The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Seekers, Believers, and Those In-Between (Orbis Books, 2015). Her writing has appeared in America, Commonweal, Slate, The New Republic, Foreign Policy, The Guardian, Narratively, Religion Dispatches, Religion News Service, National Catholic Reporter, and many other publications. Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/04072019 to view her preaching video or read her preaching text and for more preaching from Catholic women.
Kaya Oakes (journalist, author, professor) had a hunch that the Nones, those who don't associate with a religion, weren't awash in a sea of meaninglessness and immorality. A few years ago she sat down and recorded many of their stories, which became her book The Nones Are Alright. She came on to talk about what she found and the changing landscape of religion. You can find more from Kaya at http://www.oakestown.org/ and in America Magazine, The New Republic, Religion News Services and a host of other publications.

Amy shares her own experience as a Christian woman married to a culturally Jewish man, and raising their kids to be religiously Christian but culturally Jewish. We also discuss an article in BuzzFeed that highlights the desire to merge Jewish religious traditions with "wellness," a trendy movement happening amongst millennial and Gen-X practitioners. And Nish has a related interview with author, journalist and UC Berkeley professor Kaya Oakes, about the trends, spiritual lives, and politics of the fastest-growing religious demographic: "The Nones," or those who say that have no religious affiliation. HR Happy Hour 146 - 'Radical Reinvention' Thursday, August 30, 2012 - 8:00PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Follow the backchannel on Twitter - hashtag #HRHappyHour The HR Happy Hour Show returns from summer vacation and welcomes back to the show author Kaya Oakes, to talk about her most recent book, Radical Reinvention: An Unlikely Return to the Catholic Church. Ms. Oakes' book is about her journey back to the church after many years away, and how she attempts to come to terms as a progressive feminist in a church that at times seems to be clinging to its conservative past. What does 'Radical Reninvention' have to do with the world of work, or any of the 'normal' issues this show has been about the last three years? Probably nothing, but I loved the book, and I think the show will be fascinating for anyone interested in effecting change - whether in a religion, a corporation, a government, whatever. I think it will be a fun show and I hope you can join us!
HR Happy Hour - Episode 47 - 'HR and Indie Culture' Thursday May 27, 2010 - 8PM EDT - Call in 646-378-1086 Indie - the art, music, crafting, building, writing, designing and everything else that gets created independently, outside of the mainstream and continues to evolve and re-invent itself. Indie culture has its roots in the Beat poets of the 50s and stretches to the present day, as thousands of creators make, build, and showcase their ideas and themselves on and offline, and in a scores of constantly changing ways. Why is indie culture, and the indie ethos so enduring and what does it tell us about the modern workplace and the new skills needed to succeed in a global, fast-moving, and constantly changing business world? How does one stay indie once you start climbing up the corporate ladder? Or are big corporate interests always going to see indie creations and ideas as something to 'leverage' and use up? Joining us on the show this week will be Kaya Oakes, author of 'Slanted and Enhchanted: The Evolution of Indie Culture' to talk about the history, development, and current state of indie and help us to understand how the indie ethos is relevant to today's individual and organization. It should be a fun show!
