Send us a text by clicking this link!Deep within our Catholic tradition lies the often-forgotten treasure of Embertide – those sacred days of intensified prayer and fasting that punctuate our liturgical year. Today's reflection brings us to Ember Wednesday of the first week in Lent, where we're reminded of the profound spiritual significance these ancient observances hold. The Gospel places before us the sign of Jonah – three days in the whale's belly prefiguring Christ's three days in the heart of the earth. Like the Pharisees who constantly demanded signs despite witnessing countless miracles, we too often seek tangible proofs rather than embracing the mystery of faith. True faith means adhering to divine truths without constant reassurance, trusting even when we cannot see or feel.Perhaps nowhere is this faith more beautifully expressed than in our baptism – that transformative moment when we became adopted children of God. As King Saint Louis IX of France profoundly noted, "I think more of the place of my baptism than of Reims Cathedral where I was crowned King of France, for the dignity of a child of God bestowed upon me at baptism is greater than ruler of the kingdom." How striking that a medieval monarch saw his divine adoption as more significant than his earthly crown! This challenges us to examine our own priorities and appreciate the treasure we received at the baptismal font. While we meticulously plan birthday celebrations marking our physical birth, how often do we commemorate the anniversary of our spiritual rebirth? This Lenten season offers the perfect opportunity to renew our appreciation for baptismal grace through simple practices: singing a Magnificat or Salve Regina in thanksgiving, attending an extra Mass, or establishing family traditions that honor baptismal anniversaries. Through these observances, we keep alive the ember of faith that first ignited in our souls when we became temples of the Holy Spirit.Looking to deepen your Lenten journey? 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying: Master we would see a sign from thee.Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisaeis, dicentes : Magister, volumus a te signum videre. 39 Who answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 40 For as Jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.Sicut enim fuit Jonas in ventre ceti tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terrae tribus diebus et tribus noctibus. 41 The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold a greater than Jonas here.Viri Ninivitae surgent in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabunt eam : quia poenitentiam egerunt in praedicatione Jonae. Et ecce plus quam Jonas hic. 42 The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than Solomon here. 43 And when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith: I will return into my house from whence I came out. And coming he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.Tunc dicit : Revertar in domum meam, unde exivi. Et veniens invenit eam vacantem, scopis mundatam, et ornatam. 45 Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is made worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation. 46 As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him.Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas, ecce mater ejus et fratres stabant foras, quaerentes loqui ei. 47 And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee.Dixit autem ei quidam : Ecce mater tua, et fratres tui foris stant quaerentes te. 48 But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? 49 And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren.Et extendens manum in discipulos suos, dixit : Ecce mater mea, et fratres mei. 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Our second sermon on the Psalms of Ascent is on Psalm 131. Psalm 131 tells us to be calmed and at rest in soul like a weaned child with his mother. This comes from the soul being in a state of humility before God. God Himself grants that this may come to us by His grace.

At the beginning of the four seasons in the Ecclesiastical Year, the Ember Days have been instituted by the Church to thank God for blessings obtained in the past year and to implore further graces for the new season. Their importance in the Church was formerly very great. They are fixed on the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday: after the First Sunday of Lent for Spring, after Whit-sunday for Summer, after the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross (14th September) for Autumn, and after the Third Sunday of Advent for Winter. They are intended also to consecrate to God the various seasons in nature, and to prepare by penance those who are about to be ordained. Ordinations generally take place on the Ember Days. The faithful ought to pray on these days for good Priests. The Ember Days were once fast days of obligation.

16 And one of the multitude, answering, said: Master, I have brought my son to thee, having a dumb spirit.Et respondens unus de turba, dixit : Magister, attuli filium meum ad te habentem spiritum mutum : 17 Who, wheresoever he taketh him, dasheth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with the teeth, and pineth away; and I spoke to thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.qui ubicumque eum apprehenderit, allidit illum, et spumat, et stridet dentibus, et arescit : et dixi discipulis tuis ut ejicerent illum, et non potuerunt. 18 Who answering them, said: O incredulous generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.Qui respondens eis, dixit : O generatio incredula, quamdiu apud vos ero? quamdiu vos patiar? afferte illum ad me. 19 And they brought him. And when he had seen him, immediately the spirit troubled him; and being thrown down upon the ground, he rolled about foaming. 20 And he asked his father: How long time is it since this hath happened unto him? But he said: From his infancy:Et interrogavit patrem ejus : Quantum temporis est ex quo ei hoc accidit? At ille ait : Ab infantia : 21 And oftentimes hath he cast him into the fire and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, help us, having compassion on us.et frequenter eum in ignem, et in aquas misit ut eum perderet : sed si quid potes, adjuva nos, misertus nostri. 22 And Jesus saith to him: If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 23 And immediately the father of the boy crying out, with tears said: I do believe, Lord: help my unbelief. 24 And when Jesus saw the multitude running together, he threatened the unclean spirit, saying to him: Deaf and dumb spirit, I command thee, go out of him; and enter not any more into him. 25 And crying out, and greatly tearing him, he went out of him, and he became as dead, so that many said: He is dead. 26 But Jesus taking him by the hand, lifted him up; and he arose. 27 And when he was come into the house, his disciples secretly asked him: Why could not we cast him out? 28 And he said to them: This kind can go out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.Et dixit illis : Hoc genus in nullo potest exire, nisi in oratione et jejunio.

44 No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up in the last day.nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die. 45 It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me.Est scriptum in prophetis : Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei. Omnis qui audivit a Patre, et didicit, venit ad me. 46 Not that any man hath seen the Father; but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father.Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem. 47 Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life.Amen, amen dico vobis : qui credit in me, habet vitam aeternam. 48 I am the bread of life.Ego sum panis vitae. 49 Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. 52 If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world.

No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up in the last day.nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying: Master we would see a sign from thee. 39 Who answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 40 For as Jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.[38] "A sign": That is, a miracle from heaven. St. Luke 11. 16. [40] "Three days": Not complete days and nights; but part of three days, and three nights taken according to the way that the Hebrews counted their days and nights, viz., from evening to evening. 41 The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold a greater than Jonas here. And coming he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is made worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation. 46 As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him. 47 And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee. 48 But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? 49 And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren. 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother. [48] "Who is my mother?": This was not spoken by way of slighting his mother, but to shew that we are never to suffer ourselves to be taken from the service of God, by any inordinate affection to our earthly parents: and that which our Lord chiefly regarded in his mother, was her doing the will of his Father in heaven. It may also further allude to the reprobation of the Jews, his carnal kindred, and the election of the Gentiles. Music Laudate pueri. Mendelssohn.
When Jesus is talking many times in this gospel lesson about a this “wicked and adulterous generation” he is not speaking about generations in this way, as if he is looking down on those born with his parents or the next generation coming up. Generation means those born at a certain time, but it also means a kind, a class, a group – those who flock together with certain similarities. And the group of the Jews which confront Jesus looking for a sign are acting as a wicked and adulterous generation.

[26]And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth, [27] To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David : et nomen virginis Maria. [28] And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit : Ave gratia plena : Dominus tecum : benedicta tu in mulieribus. [29] Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be. [30] And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. [31] Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium, et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : [32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus : et regnabit in domo Jacob in aeternum, [33] And of his kingdom there shall be no end. et regni ejus non erit finis. [34] And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? [35] And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. [36] And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren: Et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua, et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua : et hic mensis sextus est illi, quae vocatur sterilis : [37] Because no word shall be impossible with God. quia non erit impossibile apud Deum omne verbum. [38] And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. Dixit autem Maria : Ecce ancilla Domini : fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. Et discessit ab illa angelus.
The angel Gabriel comes to Mary with an important message. Very few times does God send an angelic messenger to deliver his message. Usually God works through the words of men, through the prophets. However, when the message is especially important and needs to be confirmed he sends an angel. An angel had come to women only twice before, to Hagar, the servant of Abraham and Sarah, and mother of Ishmael, and to the wife of Manoah, the mother of Samson.

[9]And when Jesus passed on from hence, he saw a man sitting in the custom house, named Matthew; and he saith to him: Follow me. And he rose up and followed him. Et ait illi : Sequere me. Et surgens, secutus est eum. [10] And it came to pass as he was sitting at meat in the house, behold many publicans and sinners came, and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. [11] And the Pharisees seeing it, said to his disciples: Why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners? [12] But Jesus hearing it, said: They that are in health need not a physician, but they that are ill. At Jesus audiens, ait : Non est opus valentibus medicus, sed male habentibus. [13] Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.

Quatuor tempora Today is the Ember Wednesday of September, the Wednesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14).
The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you” ( Mt 12:38 ). That seems like a reasonable request. It sounds like they are saying, “Jesus, we want to believe. Show us a miracle and we will believe that you are the Messiah.” But look back a few verses in this chapter…
It is the custom at Silverstream Priory, as it is in many Benedictine monasteries, to gather in Chapter on the Ember Wednesday of Advent to hear the solemn proclamation of the Gospel of the Annunciation, the Missus Est, so called from the first words of the text: Missus est angelus Gabriel, “The Angel Gabriel was sent from God” (Luke 1:26). Following the Gospel, the abbot delivers a sermon Super Missus Est, that is, on the Gospel of the Annunciation.
