North Andover's Glen Johnson has truly had a “Window Seat on the World,” witnessing alongside former Secretary of State John F. Kerry, the unfolding of history.Four years ago, Johnson, who now serves as chief of communications and external affairs to Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker, committed his adventures—from the Vatican to the Kremlin and London to Baghdad—to his book, “Window Seat on the World: My Travels with the Secretary of State.” The book remains topical and fascinating, as Johnson explained during a recent appearance on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast.”He explained after graduating from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc., he initially observed newsmakers as a reporter in Salem and Lowell and the Associated Press. That all changed when he was working as a political reporter for the Boston Globe and “got the call.”“It was a very familiar voice at the other end of my cell phone, and he asked if we could have an ‘off the record' conversation. He made his pitch, and offer, and I went home that night and talked with my wife and two sons about it and the consensus was it would be an impossible thing to turn down,” Johnson recalled.During his time on the job, he and Secretary Kerry visited all seven continents, 91 countries, and traveled 1.5 million miles.“As we traveled around the world, I jotted down bits of color about different things I saw, or different things he said, or what it was like to be in some of these meetings that we were in. When I got home, I spent the next 18 months writing a book about it,” he said.During the course of his travels, he met many world leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin.“Shook his hand! It's not one of those things you really contemplate. You're there, he comes in the room and goes down line. It was fascinating to go into the Kremlin, to be there, and it's his fashion, he made the secretary of state wait. We waited hours for him to come in. That's just his form of passive aggressiveness. He puts you on defense by making you wait, to meet with him on his terms. But he came in finally and had the meeting. Famously, had this icy stare, a man of few words, but despite all the evidence to the contrary spoke English and understood everything that was said to him. It was a really fascinating experience to be part of and really interesting to be in that hallowed ground, the Kremlin and Red Square and all that, and see it firsthand,” he explained.Among the negotiations Kerry undertook over those four years were dealing with Iran over its nuclear weapons program and brokering climate change accords, including the 2015 Paris Agreement.Support the show

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea authors Mark Meehan and Mark Worrall to look back at Chelsea's 2003-04 season. On July 1st 2003, Chelsea and English football changed for ever. Roman Abramovich bought debt ridden Chelsea for £60m and then embarked on the biggest spending spree ever seen; £111m on 11 players including Glen Johnson; Wayne Bridge; Damien Duff; Geremi; Juan Sebastien Veron; Joe Cole; Adrian Mutu; Hernan Crespo and Claude Makalele. Surely this woudl mean a serious tilt at Chelsea's first league title since 1955?Claudio Ranieri remained manager and he must have felt like a kid in a sweet shop. The new look Chelsea started well with their first surprise defeat at home to Besiktas in the Champions' League and a less surprising but routinely disappointing defeat away to Arsenal in October. Nevertheless, Chelsea were top of the league in October and November with some impressive wins against Newcastle and Man Utd in the league and a 4-0 drubbing away to Lazio in the Champions League. However, December brought a couple of blips with the 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton and 4-2 defeat at Charlton which left Chelsea in 3rd at the end of the year. We had also been knocked out of the Carling Cup by Aston Villa who were third from bottom at the time. This was not what Roman Abramovich expected having spent a fortune on players, even though Chelsea had accrued their biggest points total ever for that stage of the season. Rumours abounded that Abramovich, aided by new Chief Executive Peter Kenyon were on the look out for a new manager, not helped with Sven Goran Erikson spotted next to Abramovich in the director's box. Maybe Ranieri had too many good players to choose from and as ever, could not resist the urge to tinker? All this while the best performing players were all players who were at the Club before Abramovich arrived, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Lampard and John Terry all prominent. So, all to play for in the second half of the season, but could Chelsea hunt down Arsenal, who, ominously had yet to be beaten in the season thus far. Sunday the 26th of February 2012, and the man whose goal had led Liverpool to their first League Cup win 31 years earlier now lead the side out in the Final as manager. Kenny Dalglish, who had returned the Anfield dugout a year earlier, faced off against Malkay Mackay's Cardiff City. Joe Mason fired Cardiff into a early lead before Liverpool's eventual player of the season Martin Skrtel scrambled the ball home to level things up. Despite pressure from Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, Liverpool couldn't find the decisive goal, and the game headed to extra time. Substitute Dirk Kuyt found his shot from distance blocked back into his path, and at full stretch managed to power it back at goal, rifling it into the bottom corner. The drama did not end there though, and after a melee in the box, a Cardiff corner was turned past Pepe Reina by Ben Turner in the 118th minute to send the game to penalties. Kuyt, man of the match Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all converted, and with a final miss from Anthony Gerrard, cousin of the Liverpool skipper, the Reds lifted the trophy for a record extending 8th time. As Steven Gerrard lifted the trophy in Cardiff, few knew that it would be their last silverware for seven years… Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/redmentv.
