pWotD Episode 2881: George Foreman Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 1,670,137 views on Saturday, 22 March 2025 our article of the day is George Foreman.George Edward Foreman (January 10, 1949 – March 21, 2025) was an American professional boxer, businessman, minister, and author. In boxing, he competed between 1967 and 1997, and was nicknamed "Big George". He was a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist. He is the namesake of the George Foreman Grill. After a troubled childhood, Foreman took up amateur boxing and won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Having turned professional the next year, he won the world heavyweight title with a stunning second-round knockout of the then-undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973. He defended the belt twice before suffering his first professional loss to Muhammad Ali in the Rumble in the Jungle in 1974. Unable to secure another title opportunity, Foreman retired after a loss to Jimmy Young in 1977.Following what he referred to as a born again experience, Foreman became an ordained Christian minister. Ten years later he announced a comeback, and in 1994 at age 45 won the unified WBA, IBF, and lineal heavyweight championship titles by knocking out 26-year-old Michael Moorer. He dropped the WBA belt rather than face his mandatory title defense soon after, and following a single successful title defense against Axel Schulz, Foreman relinquished his IBF title as well on June 28, 1995. At 46 years and 169 days old, he was the oldest world heavyweight champion in history. Foreman was the oldest to ever win the world heavyweight boxing championship of major honors and the second-oldest in any weight class after Bernard Hopkins (at light heavyweight). He retired in 1997 at the age of 48, with a final record of 76 wins (68 knockouts) and 5 losses, one of the famous losses coming at the hands of Muhammad Ali who hit him with a lightning fast 1-2 combination which was “the fastest punch” Foreman had ever seen.Foreman was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame. The International Boxing Research Organization rates Foreman as the eighth-greatest heavyweight of all time. In 2002, he was named one of the 25 greatest fighters of the past 80 years by The Ring. The Ring ranked him as the ninth-greatest puncher of all time. He was a ringside analyst for HBO's boxing coverage for 12 years until 2004. Outside boxing, Foreman was a successful entrepreneur and known for his promotion of the George Foreman Grill, which has sold more than 100 million units worldwide by 2011. In 1999, he sold the commercial rights to the grill for $138 million. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:50 UTC on Sunday, 23 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see George Foreman on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Kajal.

Steve Bunce has spent 40 years writing and talking about boxing for just about every newspaper and magazine in Britain – and just about every TV and radio station as well. In his career he's reported at ringside in over 30 countries and rubbed shoulders with hustlers and hoodlums, kings and clowns, journeymen and Hall of Fame fighters. To use one of my favourite lines of his, that's boxing, as they say in the trade. Steve's new book, Around the World in 80 Fights, follows on from Bunce's Big Fat Short History of British Boxing. We go through it all here, charting the crazy journey women's boxing made in his time from the likes of Deirdre Gogarty and Jane Couch starting out to Katie Taylor headlining at Madison Square Garden against Amanda Serrano, a Kiko Martinez love-in in Belfast as he returned to reminisce ten years on from his world title fight with Carl Frampton, and a cheeky text from Kenneth Egan that ensured he got the armband on an all-Irish boxing football team. There's his legendary showdown with a raging Bernard Hopkins, a discussion of how the media landscape has shifted massively during his four decades in the business, memories of his dalliances with the hardmen of Russia and a poignant story about the late Gary Mason where there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Like his book, this interview has got a bit of everything. Here's to a few sequels. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

E68-Anthony Joshua should quit boxing

In this video I discuss Anthony Joshua's latest loss in the boxing ring. As an avid boxing fan, watching fights for the past forty years, I've witnessed multiple great decades of prize fighting, from Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson, to Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, alongside the all time greats such as Roy Jones Jr, Evander Holyfield, Floyyd Mayweather, James Tony, Bernard Hopkins, Manny Pacquiao, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Nigel Benn, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Nassem Hamed, Gennady Golovkin, Riddick Bowe, Oscar DeLaHoya, Canelo Alverez, Terence Crawford and most recently Dimitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, whom face of soon for the undisputed Light Heavyweight crown. Obviously there are numerous other fighters, not mentioned here, of which my list could go on for at least another twenty names or so. Over the past 12 years, the boxing world has witnessed one of the most hyped up fighters ever, being Anthony Joshua, or AJ to some. A clever strategy has been forged between AJ and his promoter Eddie Hearn to essentially gain money and fame from both boxing fans and casual fans alike, working with marketing / media outlets to borderline force AJ upon the public, with his personality and public image. Whilst the fight game is not for the faint hearted, it found it's poster man in AJ and subsequently the fame and riches followed, but to a keen boxing fan, the hype train was and still is thriving.....until now. Last week, upcoming heavyweight Daniel Dubois, a 27 year old Londoner, claimed victory over AJ at a sold out Wembley Stadium, with a devastating five round demolition, putting AJ to the canvas four times, the referee didn't count one knockdown, otherwise the records would show five in total. Watching the fight three times has finally proved to me, that Anthony Joshua is now a spent force, as far as elite boxing goes, with little to zero punch resistance, poor defensive skills, sub standard ring craft and more telling than anything else, a look of constant bewilderment, whilst vocalizing practiced lines of quasi wisdom and sketchy 'tough guy' statements. The boxing world has seen far too many fighters fall victim to greedy promoters, goading and persuading them to 'roll the dice' once more, with an eye on cashing in on the fighters dwindling popularity, in the knowledge the pugilist inn question could face varying degrees of brain damage, slurred speech, organ failure, impaired vision, depression or worse. History has shown us time and time again, the majority of boxers acquire chronic injuries and or physiological breakdown, as the training itself can give rise to a numerous unwanted disorders. With this in mind, AJ should walk away form the square circle of combat and enjoy the rewards bestowed upon him, whilst his health is intact, allowing for younger, hungrier athletes to join the gravy train, hoping for their slice of the pie. Ultimately, it's down to the fighter, weather he continues or not, doctors orders and boxing athletic commission's notwithstanding and as such, my fears are AJ will go 'once more into the fray' with delusions of grandeur orbiting his army of sycophants, hands outstretched. Good luck sir and stay well.....a boxing fan. Watch the full video here on YouTube or listen on Spotify, Amazon Music or Apple Podcasts. Joined today by the former Light Heavyweight Champion, Sergei "The Krusher" Kovalev. Sergei rants about his broken iPhone, what he was doing in NYC and the food he misses most from Russia. The Champ then talks about his love for hockey, starting his son playing at a young age, his son's talents and why he thinks his son is gravitating more towards soccer. We chat about why Sergei started boxing at the age of 11, what he loved about the sweet science, and what motivated him to turn pro after over 200 amateur fights. He tells us about his non-stop early boxing schedule, why he almost quit boxing after an opponent passed away after a fight with the Krusher, and that life-changing moment in Wales when he beat Nathan Cleverly to win the world title. We hear about the after party, how he made his fights look so easy and his training schedule. Sergei talks about unifying the titles in his epic fight with Bernard Hopkins, his rocket ship to stardom, being the Ring magazine fighter of the year and what drove him to stay hungry and motivated. Sergei opens up about his controversial loss to Andre Ward, how the second loss really opened his eyes to eating healthy and why he doesn't respect Ward for retiring instead of giving him what the fans wanted, a 3rd fight. We discuss him finally getting to fight in front of his home fans in Russia against Anthony Yarde, how emotional that fight was and the hurdles that went through booking it. I question the Champ about why he took the Canelo fight only TWO months after the Yarde fight and Sergei explains all the behind the scenes nonsense he had to deal with to get that fight. We talk about moving up to cruiserweight, beating the undefeated Pulev, and when we can expect to see him next in the ring. We hear why he doesnt watch TV, the last celebrity he took a photo with and when he is able to buy a new phone. All this with the former Champ!!
