“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail . . . ?” — Job 38:22 Have you ever noticed that things that looked really big when you were a child don't seem so big when you are older? I remember walking through my old elementary school after becoming an adult, and one of the first things I noticed was how much smaller everything looked and felt. But it's not just the size of things that seems different; our perception of time changes too. When I was a boy, a summer night seemed to last and last, and a school year seemed to go on forever. Life changes as we age. Congested calendars and stacked schedules abbreviate our lives. Deadlines, commitments, and requests beg, steal, and borrow our attention from the beauty of life and the creation God has given us to care for and enjoy. Maybe even more tragic is that we can lose our sense of God's grandeur as we grow older. As children, we tend to view God as huge and magnificent, someone with incredible power and ability, able to do even more than any superhero! As we age and live longer, though, we can tend to question God's actions, critique his plans, and challenge his authority. We might even believe we know what's best for us, thinking we know our situation better than God does. Instead, though, we need to turn to our Creator and ask for his mercy, for he holds us in his hands and truly loves and cares for us always. King of creation, thank you for your enduring mercy. Forgive us when we diminish you. Humble us to see you as you truly are. Amen.

Full-text: Metro is the regional government of the greater Portland region. It is tasked with managing regional issues like transportation, land use, and public parks. Metro's Regional Mobility Policy guides the region's transportation investments toward its goals—directing investments in roads, bridges, bike lanes, light rail, and more. One of Metro's proposed policies for 2023 is the use of congestion pricing, meaning imposing tolls on users of high-traffic roadways. Cascade Policy Institute has long supported the use of toll lanes and congestion pricing to alleviate traffic, but Metro's plans for implementing these policies leave much to be desired. Metro would use tolling revenues as if they were another form of general funding, financing unrelated projects like transit subsidization instead of reinvesting revenues back into the roadways that generated them. Using pricing in this way amounts to just another tax. Clearing up existing roadways by making driving more expensive does nothing to resolve the underlying problem. For pricing to be effective, revenues from busy roadways should be reinvested in additional lanes or alternative routes that allow everyone to get where they need to go quickly and efficiently. More taxes are not the solution to congested roads. Metro needs to seriously rethink its approach to pricing if it wants to make meaningful progress in reducing traffic in the greater Portland region. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithcascade/message

Space might be a big place but the United Nations regards it as ‘congested, contested and competitive'. This latest episode of Next Giant Leap, a podcast produced by GZERO Media in partnership with the space company MDA, explores the threats and tensions as space becomes busier and of greater strategic importance for an increasing number of countries. “We have to avoid, by all means, that it becomes a Wild West,” says Tanja Masson-Zwaan, a space law expert at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She adds, “We have regulations, laws and treaties that have been in place for the last fifty years, but we need more to govern this new frontier of space utilization, because the rules that we have are basic principles and do not go into the details.” Satellites are now being deployed to Low Earth Orbit at a rate of thousands every year. This zone of space is already littered with old defunct satellites and the remains of discarded sections of rockets which have accumulated over more than five decades. The risk of collisions is increasing, raising fears of a runaway cascade of space debris. Tests of anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons have showered still more debris into Low Earth Orbit. Since 2007, China, the United States, India and Russia have conducted ASAT tests. Last year the United States announced its own moratorium on ASAT tests and, through a United Nations resolution, it has called for other nations to follow suit. So far China, Russia and India have not signed up. So is space set to become a new theater for conflict and weapons proliferation? “Look at how satellites have become embedded in our way of life,” says Kevin Whale, senior director of defense strategy at MDA. “If we wreck space, it's almost one step down from nuclear catastrophe”. Within a few years, a new phase of the space race will begin. Both the United States and China will be competing to get people to the moon and exploit its resources, particularly water ice in craters at the lunar south pole. According to Scott Pace, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, “The Outer Space Treaty says space is the province of all mankind, meaning it's open to usage really by everybody. On the other hand, the principles say we should avoid harmful interference. And so the question is, how do we go about balancing those two imperatives: open to everybody but avoid harmful interference?” Host: Kevin Fong Guests: Tanja Masson-Zwaan, Scott Pace, Kevin Whale

Max and Vince are back after a short break. Like the team, the guys took the week off to rest up for the summer. While LAFC won't play again until June 18, Max and Vince have a great guest to help fans get a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes at the club. This week, LAFC Performance Director Gavin Benjafield joins the show. Gavin joined LAFC ahead of its first season, having spent time with Watford and Ajax before coming to MLS. After a grueling May in which LAFC played eight matches in 28 days, Max and Vince talk to Gavin about what it takes to keep a squad at its best when there are limited days for training and rest. Gavin shares some of his methodology for the players that are playing lots of matches in a short period but also how to work with the players that aren't seeing the pitch as much during that time and need extra work on the side. But, of course, injuries are part of the sport no matter how much you plan. Max and Vince ask Gavin about the approach to rehabbing an injured player and go into specifics about the recovery of Eddie Segura from a long-term injury. If you've ever been curious about how players recover and why a performance staff is vital to a professional club, this episode will tide you over until LAFC is back on the pitch in MLS. But that's not all. Before Max and Vince bring on their guest, the guys talk about LAFC players in international matches as their nations prepare for the World Cup. Plus, we talk about the rumors of Giorgio Chiellini's arrival in LA. All that and more on another episode of Inside LAFC: The Max + Vince Podcast.
