Once upon a time, there was a heroic knight, the greatest of Charlamagne's famed paladins, and his name was Orlando (or Roland, depending on whom you ask.)  Among his many heroic deeds and great journeys was this: a quest to a magical isle to abduct the headstrong princess Angelica and steal the ashes of Melin (yes, that Merlin).  As his failure to win Angelica's heart leads him down the path to madness, we must ask: is there hope for this broken hero after all? Antonio Vivaldi, famed composer of The Four Seasons, is not widely known for his operas, however, he composed between 70 and 100 in his lifetime.  Join us for a discussion of this treasure of Baroque opera. Classical music is rooted in rich history, formality, and tradition - but does the musicians' concert attire still have to be? Blackstrad founder and professional flutist Mercedes Smith thinks it is time for a change of pace in performance wardrobes. In episode 110, hear how she is designing new concert black attire that resonates with the individuality of modern musicians while keeping the harmony of a unified ensemble. Mercedes Smith has served as the Principal Flutist of the Utah Symphony since 2012, having previously held the same position with the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet Orchestras. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, throughout Europe and Asia, and at renowned music festivals including the Grand Teton Music Festival, Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Verbier Festival Orchestra, and Marlboro. Never one to idle, Mercedes turned the pandemic into an opportunity, obtaining a real estate license and earning an M.B.A. from the University of Utah. Her latest endeavor is the creation of Blackstrad, a line of concert attire designed for the modern musician. She resides in Salt Lake City with her husband and three very silly dogs. In this episode, you'll learn: The role fashion plays in music performance The challenges musicians face in finding concert attire The gender inequality of concert dress codes (it's not what you think) How Mercedes got started on her brand How to know when a design is done and get over perfectionism What surprised Mercedes by how difficult it was  Why Mercedes wishes she had trusted her patternmaker more Why Mercedes doesn't like the term “sustainability” The unique business model of Blackstrad Mercedes' plans for Blackstrad and her own future People and resources mentioned in this episode: Blackstrad website Blackstrad Instagram Blackstrad email Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? In this episode, we talk to a very special guest - Serena's former flute teacher Bart Feller! Serena shares the lessons she learned from Bart in high school, and how some of them have changed meaning or truly begun to click over time. We also discuss what it means to be a compassionate teacher and mentor at various stages of a young person's development. Bart Feller is Principal Flute of the New Jersey Symphony, New York City Opera and Santa Fe Opera Orchestras. He has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Bargemusic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In this special episode, my brother explains the difference between tone, pitch, and inflection to help you improve your voice. In 2017, Yale did a study that confirmed that your voice can change your life. They found that what makes you believe someone, like someone, and trust someone is the sound of their voice. Last episode we talked about the 7-38-55 rule (listen here): only 7% of all communication is done through verbal communication (the words), whereas the nonverbal component, such as tonality of our voice and body language, comprise 38% and 55% respectively.Three tips to improve your voice:Speak on the exhale, not the inhaleFind your maximum resonance point (Vanessa Van Edwards video here)Speak at a moderately fast pace (195 words per minute) - slow talkers are perceived as less intelligent and credible (around 100 WPM)About the guest:David Binder joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Second Trombone in September 2015 and also regularly performs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, and Music of the Baroque (Chicago). He previously served as Co-Principal Trombone of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Finland for three seasons. Since 2020, David is the founder and chief audio engineer Prestige Recording Services, a professional audio and video recording production company. (Lander, WY) – Did you know 1330 KOVE AM / 107.7 FM's Coffee Time has switched times and is now an hour long? Coffee Time officially switched from it's half hour time slot at 9:30 AM, to a full hour beginning at 8:00 AM, which means Fremont County can now get their cup of joe a little bit earlier than normal! In addition to the normal Coffee Time interviews, the one hour block will now include more Fremont County news, a daily sports update with Wyatt Burichka, the National Native News segment, and much more. As a part of the new hour-long format, Coffee Time host Vince Tropea recently chatted with Lander Art Center (LAC) Outreach Coordinator Oakley Boycott, who filled us in on all the happenings at the LAC. Boycott is performing on stage on the other side of the country in New York, so she phoned in to Coffee Time to let us know about some upcoming classes and events at the LAC. (To see Oakley perform R. Strauss's Elektra this Saturday, click here; Donald Runnicles, the show's director, is also the Music Director for the Grand Teton Music Festival!) Boycott also turned the tables on host Vince Tropea, and asked questions about his upcoming Improv Comedy class starting tomorrow, April 14th, at the LAC. (Click here to register for the Improv class, there's still time!) Check out the full Coffee Time interview with Boycott below to learn more about what the Improv Comedy class will entail, what she's been up to with her own performances, and what the LAC has in store for folks this summer event season. The interview begins around the 11 minute 40 second mark. Be sure to tune in to Coffee Time every morning at 8:00 AM on 1330 KOVE AM / 107.7 FM, or stream it live right here.
