Automation holds immense potential for the product development process. Moving rote tasks from humans to artificial intelligence allows teams to focus their energy on the creative aspects of the job. It also streamlines the workflow, reducing samples and iterations, which in turn boosts efficiency and reduces waste. “You're… ultimately shifting teams from firefighting to adding value and helping businesses become more agile [and] creative while still being sustainable,” said Kristen Ohlsson, head of strategic solutions consulting at apparel design software firm Browzwear. To get the most out of AI, companies need to underpin the technology with digitalized systems and solid data management so that the machines are learning from the right information. Also critical is training so employees don't dread the technology. “AI is not there to replace your jobs,” said Lars Villumsen, strategic solutions architect consultant director at Browzwear. “It's to assist you on working smarter.” This conversation between Ohlsson, Villumsen and Sourcing Journal's senior editor, strategic content Sarah Jones covers what tasks should—and shouldn't—be automated and AI's future place in product creation.

Sheila Ohlsson Walker, Ph.D., who graduated from the Hoffman Process in 2019, shares her sense of what purpose is and how we can come to know it. Content warning: this episode does contain references to child sexual abuse and may not be suitable for all audiences. Sheila shares how purpose can change over time, meaning we can have many purposes in our lifetime. In this warm and uplifting conversation, Sheila gives tangible examples of what she means by this definition by sharing her own personal and professional life story with all of the twists and turns that a human lifetime contains. It is clear that Sheila is passionate about guiding children through the power of sports to find their YODA code (Your Own Decision Advisor) so they can grow into adulthood and live their lives with this 'personal GPS.' When we have our own YODA code, we can find our way back home when we get off track in life, something that happened to Sheila at a young age. In response to this event, through her own resilience and the help of caring adults, she found her way. Sheila lives a purposeful life of service, learning, and joy. Accordingly, her work is focused on parents, sports coaches, teachers, and other adults who impact youth during powerful developmental chapters when lifelong habits are most seamlessly embedded. Relatedly, she seeks to empower young people with mindsets, knowledge, and skills that support them in building self-narratives that catalyze holistic flourishing across life. More about Sheila Ohlsson Walker, CFA, Ph.D. : A competitive tennis player since childhood, Sheila Ohlsson Walker, CFA, Ph.D. knows first-hand the power of sport to embed life skills and mindsets that transfer into careers, relationships, and wellness habits that foster health and well-being across life. She knows that adults, through the relationships they form, can activate passion, possibility, and a sense of purpose in young people. Dr. Walker received a B.S. in Finance at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and after a career as a portfolio manager for a buy-side investment firm in Denver, she pivoted to academia. She earned a doctorate in Behavioral Genetics from the Social, Genetic, and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at Kings College London, where she learned that the headline of biosocial science was clear: nurture (the environment) shapes nature (DNA) across life. Dr. Walker is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She serves on the boards of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation and the Youth Performance Institute, is a trustee of the Kent Denver School, and is a member of the United States Tennis Association's Sport Science Committee. Sheila lives in Denver. Her greatest pride and joy is being a mother to her three sons, Jack, Charlie, and Wyatt. www.sheilaohlssonwalker.com As mentioned in this episode: Joan Borysenko Ph.D., Chair of Hoffman's Advisory Council The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk MD Quote: "Don't worry that your child isn't listening to you; worry that they are always watching you." Lauren Ohlsson is the lead of industry solutions for pharmaceutical and healthcare at VDX.tv, which partners with pharmaceutical marketing teams, healthcare advertisers, and media agencies to create video content that drives engagement with patients and healthcare personnel. They create custom interactive video ad units seen across Connected TVs, desktop computers, and mobile devices and targeted to the desired patients or providers. Using QR codes on CTV and OTT ads allows viewers to scan the code to get additional information quickly. Lauren explains, "One of the specific propositions we add is that we focus on CTV and then extend that reach to the household after that. It's a unique way to start these conversations around the household because often there are caretakers, family members, and a lot of people involved in medical decisions, so that's one of the facets of what VDX.tv can do." "We can do everything by targeting medical professionals by their NPI numbers. So if there's a specific chart list of doctors or medical professionals to reach, we can help do that. And then, we can target by conditions, so whether or not somebody has the probability of potentially having a medical condition, we can also reach them."   "The environment is unique because we can target potential and prospective patients and healthcare providers via CTV. And then, to have the conversation with the household, we're able to follow up on desktops. So if you're engaging in health content, we'll take health.com, for example, you can see our ads, our video ads, in that environment as well, and then the same on a mobile device."  "We know in pharma, the marketing teams are very focused on an omnichannel approach. We have an advantage in that we can reach people on their TVs, and then also on their mobile and desktop devices to make sure that we're distributing appropriate content to the right audiences." #VDXtv #DTCAds #HCPAds #HealthCarePersonnelAds #CTV #OTT #PharmaceuticalAds #HealthcareAds #MobileAds #PatientEngagement VDX.tv  Download the transcript here

In this episode, Drs. Jim Loehr and Sheila Ohlsson Walker join Bradley to talk about the concepts in their new book, "Wise Decisions." In WISE DECISIONS, the authors introduce the concept of Your Own Decision Advisor or Y.O.D.A. – the inner voice that guides people's choices. “When the stories crafted by your inner voice are faulty or ill-conceived, the advice or decisions that emanate from those faulty interpretations will likely be flawed as well,” say Loehr and Walker. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, hopelessness, and fatigue are all capable of sabotaging a person's Y.O.D.A. They also discussed decision-making when emotionally "hot" or not.Get Wise Decisions on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Wise-Decisions-Science-Based-Approach-Choices/dp/1119931401Dr. Jim Loehr holds a masters and doctorate in psychology, serves on several scientific boards, and is a full member of the American Psychological Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology, and has been inducted into three Halls of Fame. As protests, police brutality and the ongoing threat of COVID-19 upend notions of safety and unleash deep-seated fury and grief, stress and worry abound, particular for communities of color. Adults are understandably having difficulty managing their own stress, and they are worried about the effects of all this on their children. A few days before George Floyd suffocated under the weight of a Minneapolis police officer's knee, we spoke with Dr. Sheila Ohlsson Walker about the steps we can take during this unsettling time to be well and even thrive.  Sheila holds various science and teaching positions at Tufts University's Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development; Johns Hopkins School of Education; George Washington University and the University of California, Irvine. Among other roles, she also sits on Turnaround for Children's advisory board. Sheila has spent much of her career researching the intersection of biology and behavior. Most recently, she has written a series of articles for Turnaround called ”Back to Basics” that illuminates how and why a handful of synergistic, simple, and scientifically-grounded lifestyle choices offer protection and fortify mental and physical health for life. As she explains, our bodies and brains are integrated systems, and making self-care part of our daily routine – even during the most challenging of times – can provide the stabilizing sense of control that builds resilience.
