The commission for a new Clarinet Concerto from the great American composer Aaron Copland came from a rather unlikely source: Benny Goodman, the man known as the King of Swing. Goodman was one of the most famous and important jazz musicians of all time, but in the late 1940s, swing music was on the decline, and bebop had taken over. Goodman experimented with bebop for a time but never fully took to it in the way that he had so mastered swing. Goodman then turned towards the classical repertoire, commissioning music from many of the great composers of the time, such as Bela Bartok, Darius Milhaud, Paul Hindemith, Francis Poulenc, and of course, Aaron Copland. Copland eagerly agreed to the commission, and spent the next year carefully crafting the concerto, which is full of influences from Jazz as well as from Latin American music, perhaps inspired by the four months Copland spent in Latin America while writing the piece. What resulted from all this was a short and compact piece in one continuous movement split into two parts. With an orchestra of only strings, piano, harp, and solo clarinet, Copland created one of the great solo masterpieces of the 20th century. It practically distills everything that makes Copland so great into just 18 minutes of music. Today on the show we'll talk about the difficulty of the piece, something that prevented Benny Goodman from performing the concerto for nearly 2 years, as well as the immense difficulty of the second movement for the orchestra. We'll also talk about all of those quintessentially Copland traits that make his music so wonderful to listen to, and the path this concerto takes from beautiful openness to jazzy fire. Today I present to you the extraordinarily versatile, even chameleon-like singer and actor Marni Nixon (22 February 1930 – 24 July 2016), who is no doubt best-known today as the so-called “Ghostess with the Mostest.” Born into a musical family in California, she became involved from an early age with the movies, and by a marvelous set of circumstances became The Voice for a number of Hollywood actresses not known for their singing voices. Her skill in matching the vocal and speech characteristics of each of these performers is exceptional, but she was so much more than that. She pioneered the work of many 20th century giants, including Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, and Anton Webern. She hosted a local Seattle children's television program called Boomerang that netted her four Emmy Awards. She performed on opera stages and concert platforms around the world. She recorded widely, everything from Mary Poppins to Pierrot Lunaire, and in the mid-1970s was the first singer to perform and record Schoenberg's cabaret songs, his so-called Brettl-Lieder, works that are now standard repertoire. Reminiscences of Marni are provided by my good friend Thomas Bagwell, currently a coach and conductor at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, who was a colleague and good friend of Marni Nixon's for the last 25 years of her life. This episode features a cross-section of this stunning artist's extensive recorded output, recorded over six decades, including repertoire from Webern to Rodgers and Hammerstein. In between we have examples of Nixon's performances of songs by Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ives, Fauré and her former husband Ernest Gold; concert and song repertoire by Villa-Lobos, Boulez, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Copland, and Gershwin; plus a few outliers, from a live performance of Korngold's Mariettas Lied to the jazzed-up exotica of Buddy Collette's Polynesia to Mr. Magoo's Mother Goose Suite, not to mention a spoonful of Mary Poppins. Overall, “It's a Jolly ‘Oliday with Marni!” Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Lucasfilm has about a dozen Star Wars movies in various stages of development. One of them is a prequel from James Mangold that will tell the origins of the Force, the mysterious energy field created by life that binds the Star Wars galaxy together. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Mangold opened up about what convinced him to make a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, sharing that "the really important aspects [were] the freedom to make something new." Mangold, who is co-writing the screenplay with Beau Willimon, explained that they wanted to find "a way on the page to say something original." With his movie set to take place 25,000 years before any other Star Wars project, Mangold will seemingly be freed from decades of lore. "I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody," the director added, suggesting that his Star Wars movie may drastically shake up the fandom's current understanding of the force.Announced in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration Europe IV, Mangold's Star Wars movie will be part of an era dubbed "Dawn of the Jedi" by Lucasfilm. "The Force has become a kind of religious legend that spans through all these movies. But where did it come from? How is it found? Who found it? Who was the first Jedi? And that's what I'm writing right now," teased Mangold at the time of its announcement. Mangold has since cited Cecil B. DeMille's 1923 silent religious epic The Ten Commandments as a major inspiration for the movie. However, it is unclear when exactly the "Dawn of the Jedi" movie will go into production, as there is a chance Mangold's next movie will instead be his DC Universe feature, Swamp Thing. The filmmaker became attached to Swamp Thing in February 2023 and has been juggling the screenplays for both movies ever since. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has repeatedly stated that no DC movie will get greenlit until there is a finished screenplay that is worth turning into a movie, so there's a good chance that Swamp Thing may also be a ways off.The next Star Wars movie to hit theaters will be The Mandalorian & Grogu in May 2026. When the movie is finally released, it will have been almost seven years since the last Star Wars movie, 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. The Mandalorian & Grogu is a feature-length continuation of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. While plot details remain under wraps, Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and the lovable alien Grogu will be joined on their first big-screen adventure by Star Wars Rebels character Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios, Sigourney Weaver (in a mystery role), and Jeremy Allen White, who will voice a grown-up Rotta the Hutt. Jon Favreau — who created The Mandalorian — co-wrote and directed The Mandalorian & Grogu, which was shot entirely in California between August and December 2024 and is currently in post-production&

The actor, comedian and writer Nick Mohammed hasn't followed an obvious career path. His youthful obsessions included performing magic and playing the violin, followed by a first-class degree in geophysics. He even began a PhD in seismology – before his love of comedy took him in a very different direction. He's ended up on the red carpet at the Emmys, thanks to his role as Nate the football coach in the much-acclaimed TV series Ted Lasso. He's starred with David Schwimmer in the sitcom Intelligence, which he wrote and co-produced. For his live shows he created the much-loved Mr Swallow, a peevish and pedantic magician – who has also attracted millions of views on social media. Nick's musical choices include Copland, Beethoven, Dvorak and Prokofiev.

Girl, Interrupted was the 70th-highest grossing movie of 1999, released in a very limited run just before Christmas to make it eligible for awards season. It would ultimately go on to earn $48 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. Directed and co-written by Copland director James Mangold from the memoir "Girl, Interrupted" by Susanna Kaysen, the film was a longtime dream project for star Winona Ryder, who fought hard for years to get it made. It was presented as obvious Oscar bait, but the film had a mixed response from audiences and critics, who found it uneven and lacking a narrative core. Still, Girl, Interrupted earned universal praise for its performances, including the breakthrough one from Angeline Jolie, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as the sociopathic Lisa. It was also praised for what at the time was an unusually nuanced and sensitive portrayal of mental health disorders. But how has Girl, Interrupted aged? Was it too ahead of its time, or is it too of its time to stand on its own today? John and Julia welcomed Film Twitter superstar Jane Altoids for her take. Jane is on Twitter @staticbluebat

Welcome to another episode of Hit Rewind! Today, we're diving into the films of 1997, a year often overlooked despite its cinematic gems. With John joining in place of Jacob, we explore the diverse range of movies that made 1997 unique. While blockbuster hits like "Men in Black" and "Face/Off" dominate the nostalgic conversation, we also shine a light on lesser-known yet thoroughly enjoyable films. In this episode, we discuss "Copland," a film that, despite its stellar cast and critical acclaim, seems to have lost some of its initial impact over time. We delve into the performances, particularly Sylvester Stallone's standout role, and the intricate character dynamics that make this movie a must-watch. Next, we analyze David Fincher's "The Game," a tightly wound thriller that keeps you in a constant state of paranoia. We reflect on Michael Douglas's compelling performance and the film's intricate plot twists that keep you guessing until the very end. We also examine "Conspiracy Theory," a film that blends intense psychological thriller elements with moments of levity. Mel Gibson's portrayal of a paranoid conspiracy theorist is both captivating and unsettling, reflecting the actor's unique ability to balance charm with vulnerability. Our journey continues with "Operation Condor," a Jackie Chan classic filled with breathtaking stunts and comedic action sequences. We discuss the film's place within Chan's filmography and its enduring appeal. Finally, we revisit "Alien Resurrection," the much-maligned entry in the Alien franchise. We explore the film's strengths and weaknesses, from its unique visual style to its controversial narrative choices. Join us as we celebrate the highs and lows of 1997's cinematic offerings and look forward to our next exploration of 1998's films.

I always knew she was an incredible actress, whether making me laugh or cry, but, what an amazing woman… mother, daughter, loyal friend, and pet rescuer. We talked the Bronx, where we both come from, Alexanders, our mothers, gratefully still with us, Cathy's pre-Pesci discovery acting days… high school drama, plays, dinner theatre, no agent, no professional training, but grabbing stage time wherever she could, auditioning and then a bathing suit contest to win a coveted pair of shoes that would change her stars. The trifecta at 17, the beforementioned Pesci, DeNiro, and Scorcese––Raging Bull. Her first film which led to that Oscar nod, on-the-job master classes, and a friendship with her character's namesake that would last the rest of Vikki LaMotta's lifetime. Neighbors. Belushi's last film. Ackroyd's kindness. All Cathy learned about comedy from them. Soapdish, how she almost didn't get it, who almost did, one of Cathy's favorite films for so many reasons. A horrible car accident, getting back to work… Kindergarten Cop, Forget Paris, Casper, Speilberg, Eric Idle, Copland, Stallone, more DeNiro, Analyze That, and how easy they are together. Despite all the work, Cathy's so un-Hollywood. Unfazed by celebrity and stardom, she dreamt of being a great actress not a movie star. A mother, who loves to cook, and thanks to Marty's mother (Scorcese) she prides herself on making the best sauce and meatballs around, she's also a savvy businesswoman who's owned a few restaurants and very successful pizzerias. We're regulars at the Encino location. There was so much more to talk about than we had time for - there's a slice of pizza in our future… I have witnesses! What started out as respect, and adoration… I adore, more! Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

There has always been a debate about “The Great American Symphony.” By the time most prominent American composers got around to writing large scale symphonic works, the symphony had very nearly gone out of fashion. To many musicians and thinkers, the symphony had passed on with the death of Mahler. With the advent of atonality, which essentially destroyed the developmental structure that symphonies rested on, there seemed to be nowhere for the symphonic genre to go. The traditional udnerstanding is that composers like Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Sibelius, among others, picked the symphony back up from its deathbed and resurrected it. But there was a generation of American composers also writing symphonies around this time, and many of them have never quite gotten the consideration they deserve. Ives wrote 4 brilliant symphonies, Bernstein wrote 3 ambitious symphonies, there are the symphonies by the first generation of Black American composers, namely William Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony, and then there are much less known symphonies by composers like Roy Harris, which were huge successes at the time of their premiers, but which have faded into obscurity. Despite many strong efforts, very few American symphonies have made their way into the standard “canon.” That is, except for one: Copland's 3rd Symphony, which is almost certainly the most played American symphony. It was written as World War II was coming to an end, and it is one of Copland's most ardent and life-affirming works. Naturally, connections were made to the Allied triumph in World War II, but Copland insisted that the symphony wasn't a reflection of the era, writing: "if I forced myself, I could invent an ideological basis for the Third Symphony. But if I did, I'd be bluffing—or at any rate, adding something ex post facto, something that might or might not be true but that played no role at the moment of creation." Whatever the inspiration, this symphony has become one of Copland's most enduring works, even though it is also in many ways one of his most complex. It is a massive work, nearly 40 minutes in length, and it requires a huge and virtuosic orchestra. It also features some of Copland's most recognizable tunes, including of course, the Fanfare for the Common Man, which permeates the symphony and is in many ways its central theme. So today, on this Patreon Sponsored episode, we'll dig deep into this symphony, mapping out its unusual form, and savoring the energy, optimism, and creativity with which Copland attacked the well-worn genre of the symphony. Join us!
