Admit it: if you're a fan of classical music—or even just a regular concertgoer—you might have glanced at the title of this episode and done a double take. The Dvořák Violin Concerto? Not the Cello Concerto? One of the things I love about my job as a conductor—and my side gig as a podcast host—is bringing audiences and listeners like you pieces you may never have heard before, even if they're by extremely well-known composers. Don't get me wrong, I love the blockbusters. But there's a special thrill in introducing someone to something new. Now, some of you might already be big fans of the Dvořák Violin Concerto. But in my experience, it's relatively unknown compared to Dvořák's more famous works. I've never performed it myself, and I've only heard it live once. It's not part of most touring soloists' repertoire, and it's just one of those pieces that rarely comes up—especially compared to the Cello Concerto, which I think I've conducted at least once every season since becoming a conductor. This concerto came about much like the Brahms Violin Concerto, the Brahms Double Concerto we talked about a couple of weeks ago, and so many other great 19th-century works: inspired by the sound of Joseph Joachim's violin. Joachim was the great violinist of the 19th century and had been a friend and supporter of Dvořák for many years. Dvořák ended up dedicating the concerto to Joachim, writing: "I dedicate this work to the great Maestro Jos. Joachim, with the deepest respect, Ant. Dvořák." Sadly—and for reasons that remain somewhat unclear—Joachim never performed the piece. That may be one of the reasons it's never achieved the popularity it deserves. Today, in this Patreon-sponsored episode, we'll dive into the concerto, exploring its unusual form, the myriad challenges it poses for the violinist, and perhaps some reasons why it's not part of the so-called “Big Five” violin concertos—even though it probably deserves to be.

In the first of four programmes across 2025 marking the 300th anniversary of the publication of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Hannah French explores the Violin Concerto in F minor, RV297 - better known as Winter.From the trembling, teeth-chattering cold of the first movement to the fireside warmth of the second and the slippery ice and chill winds of the last, in this concerto Vivaldi vividly depicts the harsh brutality of the Venetian winter. Hannah considers the context and inspirations for the music, and shares other early music influenced by the season of frost and darkness. She talks to violinist Daniel Pioro, whose new recording of The Four Seasons couples Vivaldi's music with new poetry by Michael Morpurgo, about what Vivaldi's Winter means to him. A poluição sonora dos oceanos é algo real. Muitos acham que o fundo do mar é completamente silencioso. Quem mergulha no oceano a poucos metros de profundidade ou até mesmo quem assiste a alguns documentários na televisão tem a impressão de que se trata de um ambiente muito calmo. No entanto, há muito barulho no mar, como a crepitação de corais e os sons emitidos por cachalotes (uma espécie de baleia), golfinhos e muitos outros animais. Os sons no oceano são naturais, mas hoje estão dez vezes mais altos do que em meados do século XX. E é claro que a humanidade está envolvida nisso. Surgiram, com o passar das décadas, novas tecnologias de navegação e de pesquisas sísmicas (que usam extensas ondas de som a fim de explorar o fundo do oceano e seus recursos naturais) que estão afetando a vida marinha e causando poluição sonora. Um estudo publicado em 2015 analisou a poluição sonora dos oceanos e seus efeitos na biota marinha. Para se ter uma ideia, pesquisas sísmicas intensas atingem uma média de 230 decibéis (dB) – um show de rock atinge entre 105 dB e 120 dB. Esse nível de som afeta a audição dos animais de acordo com a exposição, coloca em risco a comunicação entre espécies e submete o animal a um estresse de longo prazo, o que provoca problemas psicológicos e reprodutivos. [...] Animais marinhos como as baleias usam o som para fazer de tudo, desde comunicar-se e viajar até procurar alimento e encontrar ambientes seguros. O som viaja mais rápido e mais longe na água que no ar e os animais marinhos se aproveitam disso. Mas isso também significa que o zumbido quase constante da poluição sonora subaquática, como o causado pelo tráfego dos navios, pode prejudicar muito o seu modo de vida. Nos últimos 50 anos, o aumento da navegação fez crescer em 30 vezes o ruído de baixa frequência existente ao longo das principais rotas marítimas. Imagine seu vizinho no andar de cima reformando seu apartamento e você em uma importante apresentação profissional em uma chamada de vídeo. Você terá muita dificuldade para ouvir e comunicar-se com seus colegas para fazer um trabalho adequado. É isso que os animais marinhos que vivem ou migram perto dos ruídos humanos precisam suportar na maior parte do tempo. David Owen Norris chooses his favourite version of Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Op.77.

In the early 1930s, at the height of the atonal and twelve tone movement in music, the American violinist Louis Krasner commissioned a concerto from the Viennese Composer Alban Berg. Berg declined at first, saying that his idiom was not appropriate to a concerto and that he did not belong in the world of Wienawski and Vieuxtemps, two relatively obscure composers nowadays who wrote virtuoso showpieces for the violin that are very exciting but not particularly deep on a musical level. Krasner countered with the Beethoven and Brahms' violin concertos, which, frankly, is a pretty great argument! Krasner was convinced that Berg was the vessel through which 12 tone/serial music could reach, as the great writer Michael Sternberg called it, “it's expressive potential.” The 12 tone/serial technique of writing music was still controversial at the time(and it remains that way now), with many composers and performers embracing atonal music, with others, especially audiences, turning away. Berg finally accepted the commission, and despite his normal slow pace of composing, wrote the concerto in just a few months. The piece fulfilled Krasner's expectations, and more, and it has become almost a standard repertoire piece for violinists. It is in the twelve tone style, but it is also in many ways a fundamentally tonal piece, and the way that Berg passes through atonality to tonality and back again makes this concerto accessible in a way that many other atonal works are not at first hearing. In 2021, she founded a sound healing studio in partnership with the Awareness & Wellness Center, helping clients access deep relaxation and healing through music. Monique's work also includes leading the Rancho La Puerta Chamber Music Festival and, in 2019, performing Beethoven's Violin Concerto 50 times in 250 days for communities facing adversity. En 1924, Leopoldo Lugones recibe el Premio Nacional de Literatura. En la década de los 30, decepcionado por su frustrada militancia política tras apoyar el golpe de Estado y deprimido por una profunda crisis sentimental, el ganador del Premio Nacional de Literatura (1926) y presidente, desde 1928, de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores, decidió suicidarse. Nimrod Borenstein is a brilliant composer, who was a child prodigy as both a composer and performer. His often complex music is beloved by performers and audiences alike, and has been widely recorded and performed internationally. He is also a renowned conductor, and he spoke to me about his difficult decision to cut short his career as a violin soloist in order to find alternate career options as he developed his career as a composer. Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active champion of Nimrod's music, and you'll hear the charming story of their first meeting.  Ashkenazy first conducted Borenstein's orchestral work The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe op. 52 to great acclaim, and the Chandos label released a very successful album devoted to Borenstein's music conducted by Ashkenazy featuring his Violin Concerto and orchestral works.   Nimrod shares his insights about interpreting music for performers and conductors, the development of his compositional style and his views on creativity in general. Forbidden love is in the air as Andrés Orozco-Estrada takes listeners from the streets of Bernstein's New York to Tchaikovsky's fantasy on Shakespearean Verona. The Argentine Pampas region is the setting of Ginastera's vibrant ballet about a city boy who wins the heart of a rancher's daughter. Barber's lush and virtuosic Violin Concerto features Benjamin Beilman, whose “rich sound conveys both dreamy lyricism and heated intensity” (The New York Times). Please note: Hilary Hahn must regrettably withdraw from her planned September 19 and 20 performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Earlier this summer, Hahn suffered from a double pinched nerve; as part of her treatment, her medical team advised her to abstain from performing. While Hahn is expected to recover in time for the majority of her fall engagements and is improving steadily, she is not yet cleared to perform. Bach proves his mastery of the Baroque concerto here, as in the Brandenburgs -- except this time, we don't have the original music!  We do have a harpsichord concerto as well as an organ concerto version of the first movement (which is actually from a cantata)... but we do not have the violin concerto version, which scholars assume must exist.  The reason for this assumption is that this music is suited exceptionally well for the violin, and so, this reconstruction was made.   The first six bars of this piece are some of the most dynamic in Baroque music -- if you ever hear someone complain that classical music is "boring", hand them some good headphones and turn this one on!   Violin Concerto in D minor - the main recording we talk about on this episode: Netherlands Bach Society, led by Shunske Sato Another recording of the same piece by Netherlands Bach Society, led by Shunske Sato Cantata "Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal" (BWV 146) (featuring the source music for this concerto)

Donald Macleod & Dr Jennifer Martyn explore the remarkable, tragic story of gifted violinist and composer, Amanda Maier Amanda Maier was one of the 19th century's most brilliant musicians, yet whose story was almost lost to history. Born in the small Swedish town of Landskrona, her virtuoso talent at the violin saw her rise to become one of Europe's most in-demand performers: giving private and public concerts of major works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Bruch, as well as her own dazzling compositions. Maier was a friend of Grieg, Brahms, Clara Schumann and Ethel Smyth and her music was reviewed in newspapers across Europe. Tragically, ill health would see her pass away at the age of just 41 and her musical legacy slowly forgotten. Philippe Quint, violinist, was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg today) and trained in the United States at the The Juilliard School, earning both a Bachelor's and Master's degree.  He made his solo debut at age nine while studying at Moscow's Special Music school for the Gifted.  He earned top prizes in music competitions around the world, and his recording of Korngold's Violin Concerto ranked in the top 20 on Billboard's Classical Chart in its first week of sales. He benefited from coaching sessions over time by the famed violin teacher, Dorothy Delay and Itzhak Perlman.  His recordings range from the works of Charlie Chaplan to Felix Mendelssohn.
