"You have to believe in yourself. And you can say it a million times, but before this, I didn’t actually believe I could run with these girls. And now I absolutely know that I can run with these girls, and I know that I can be competitive."   Nell Rojas finished ninth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in February. And that in its own is impressive — but it's especially impressive when you consider that it was only Nell's third ever marathon. Nell is a triathlete and obstacle course racer turned marathoner, and on this episode, she talks about running the Olympic A standard at her first marathon, winning her second marathon (a 2:28 at Grandma's Marathon in 2019), and running the Trials as her third marathon. She talks about her recovery from the Trials and what's next, and talks about the time she beat Des Linden at the Falmouth Road Race — and then immediately asked for her autograph. Plus: What Nell is like as a coach, why she decided to rescue a dog right before the Trials, and the advice she has for anyone who's ever been told they "don't look like a runner."   What you’ll get on this episode: Nell breaks down her post-Trials recovery, and explains what her training looks like right now (3:50) Nell recaps her race at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (6:20) Nell’s road to becoming a marathoner (24:50) On winning Boulder Bolder 40 years after her dad won the race, and winning Grandma’s Marathon in 2019 (32:00) What is Nell like as a coach? Kellyn Taylor is a 2:24 marathoner and ranked #7 on the US all-time list, but her story is so much more interesting than a time on the clock. She's also training to be a firefighter, has a passion for fostering children, and is working to instill her trademark mental toughness in her own daughter. In this interview led by Kara and Shanna, we cover it all. Kellyn tells us about her Wisconsin roots where she grew up doing gymnastics and playing soccer before running became her primary sport. She talks about her transition into pro running with MacMillan Elite before she made the shift to work with Ben Rosario at NAZ Elite. She gives us the details behind her running highs and lows including two narrow misses for making the Olympic team in 2016 in both the marathon and 10K, her DNF at Boston in 2018 in nor'easter conditions, and her big PR in 2:24 at the Grandma's Marathon just 8 short weeks after the Boston disappointment. In addition, she shares personal stories about returning from pregnancy to run again and the roller-coaster ride it can be as a foster parent. Finally, we discuss the clean sport culture within NAZ Elite and Kellyn's perspective on the great shoe debate, including why she believes that all carbon fiber plates should be banned. Like her teammates from this interview series Steph Bruce and Scott Fauble, Kellyn is an open book who isn't afraid to tell it like it is, and we appreciate her so much for that. We are excited to cheer her on from the sidelines in Atlanta next weekend! As mentioned in the closing to the interview, you can meet the Clean Sport Collective podcast co-hosts in Atlanta on Saturday (Feb 29). We will be offering a 3-mile shake-out run with Kara, Shanna, and Chris at 8:30 am from the Olympic Rings in Centennial Olympic Park near the Trials finish line. Come for the run, meet the hosts, and get your CSC temporary tattoo to rep as you cheer for the Trials!

It actually refers to a hill on the Grandma's Marathon course, from Two Harbors to Duluth.  Also, the 10-Mile t-shirt doesn't have a leaf on it like we thought. The medal does have a leaf.

Distance Running Legend, Dick Beardsley, is an America hero, having won a string of marathons in the early 1980s, including the London Marathon in 1981 and Grandma's Marathon in both 1981 and 1982. He's most famous ironically, though, for losing a marathon: The infamous "Duel in the Sun" 1982 Boston Marathon, where he and Alberto Salazar went step for step for 26.2 Miles. It was a colossal race finish that left an indelible imprint on the minds and hearts of running fans forever, truly illustrating the depths of competition and racing with all your heart until the very last step.    A Hero's Journey is never complete, however, without adversity and tragedy. Dick speaks openly about multiple accidents that left him physically broken and addicted to pain killers for many years. He also talks about the recent loss of his son and the strong faith that he credits for his abounding positive attitude in the face of despair. His days of competitive running may be over, but these days, he and his wife, Jill, run their own daily marathon as owners of Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast and the Dick Beardsley Fishing Guide Service in Bemidji, Minnesota.  Together, they have found purpose, happiness and tranquility. This is a conversation about believing in yourself, following your dreams, holding your loved ones close, and never giving up hope.  Thank you, Dick and Jill Links: Dick Beardsley Website Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast Dick Beardsley Fishing Guide Service Video of 1982 "Duel in the Sun" Finish Theme Music: "Aitech" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
