Kellyn Acosta was a key member of the US Men's National Team that qualified for and then played in the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar. His journey to that tournament, and significance of his participation, is unique to the story of soccer in America. Acosta was born in Dallas, Texas and joined he FC Dallas youth system in 2009. He worked his way through the Development Academy, then onto the senior team in 2013. He emerged as a regular on the FC Dallas team and became recognized as a rising star in the US Soccer ecosystem. He finally broke through  with the US Men's National Team in 2016, at a time of transition. The team was unsuccessful in its efforts to qualify for the World Cup; then a legendary group of veterans was transitioning out of the program and a young group introduced rapidly into the first team. Kellyn was part of that group and experienced the ebbs and flows of the transition before ultimately being a key contributor in the Qualifying cycle.  He is the son of a Japanese father and an African American Mother. When he earned a roster spot for the 2022 World Cup, Kellyn became the first Asian American man to appear for the United States in a World Cup. He has played 11 seasons in the MLS and is an MLS Cup winner with LAFC. Kellyn currently is a member of Chicago Fire FC. Caden is the third of four children, diagnosed shortly after his 11th birthday with high risk acute myeloid leukemia. He received a bone marrow transplant (his oldest brother was his donor) in April 2023, and he spent 18 months in remission before relapsing in October 2024. He is currently undergoing treatment with Seattle Children's Hospital. Caden is kind, thoughtful, the best brother to his little sister, he loves to read, put puzzles together, and of course, play video games (scary ones are his favorite). He loves Jesus, and enjoys volunteering in children's ministry at his church. He dreams of one day becoming a firefighter. Despite everything he has been through, he has the most amazing smile, and is a light to everyone who knows him. The name Caden means Warrior or fighter; companion or friend, which is the perfect way to describe him, and his nickname in the hospital was Warrior Caden. Kellyn Simonson was raised in Washington state. She received a Bachelor's degree in Professional Communication from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana before returning to the Pacific Northwest and starting a family of her own. Professionally, Kellyn works as a Family Resources Coordinator at a birth to three early intervention agency. She has navigated personal challenges including divorce, having a young son diagnosed with autism, and supporting another son through a high-risk leukemia battle. Her personal experiences have fueled her passion for writing, editing, and harnessing the power of storytelling to heal and inspire. Full transcript When CMO Kellyn Smith Kenny joined AT&T in 2020, she led an ambitious overhaul of the company's purpose; as is the case in many companies, this required a huge amount of customer research, and countless workshops and conversations with employees from across the company. But after landing on a stronger brand — to connect people to greater possibility through expertise, simplicity, and inspiration — Kellyn realized the new identity couldn't be launched to the public yet. Internally, AT&T's staff would have to "live it" first. "We needed to get our employees excited about it, our employees inspired by it," she says. "We needed for every single employee of the company to have their own connection story, to be able to tell a story that showcased how AT&T was bringing greater possibility either to communities or customers or even members of their own family so it felt real and personal, and it felt like a purpose that they could sign up for." On June 12, the lawsuit Held v. State of Montana will go to trial in Helena's district court. In the lawsuit, brought by 16 youth plaintiffs from across Montana, allege that Montana, through its executive agencies, has knowingly approved projects and implemented policies that support a fossil-fuel based energy system that adds dangerous levels of greenhouse gas pollution to the atmosphere, contributing to climate change, damaging Montana's environment and harming the state's youth. The lawsuit is predicated on the Montana Constitution, written in 1972, which enshrines the right to a clean and healthful environment for present and future generations. Just one episode away from a nice milestone, Filly and Scarf chat about one of our better performances of the season, a 3-0 pummeling of RSL in Sandy, Utah. It's Episode 249, and on this episode, we break down the match, and touch on all the LAFC news and notes of the past week. LAFC started out hot, with an early goal, as Filly predicted. Mahala's 9th minute banger gave the Black and Gold a lead they would never relinquish. In the 15', however, some consternation for LAFC, as Kellyn goes down hurt and has to come off. Both LAFC's defense and Carlos Vela's ankle bent a bit over the next 30 minutes, but nothing too severe on either side. And in the 35', a rocket from Bouanga off the easiest assist Carlos will ever have doubles the lead and puts the boys up 2-0 at the half, just as Scarf predicted!The second half was... boring. With LAFC content to possess and RSL doing little to counter or press for the first 15-20 minutes, the match slogged through syrup. A goal-saving clearance by Timothy Tillman on an Olimpico attempt was about all there was to talk about other than the insertion of Anderson Julio. But Julio would make his presence felt, literally and figuratively, colliding cleanly with John McCarthy in the 68'. McCarthy would stay down for a bit, holding his shoulder, but the stalwart keeper would remain in the match. LAFC closed things out late, as Denis earned a penalty and allowed Mateusz Bogusz to open his account with a boomer of a kick low and hard to the right and past Zac MacMath. LAFC would lead, 3-0, and, albeit slightly battered, would come away with a comfortable win amidst a dominating second half. We'll have to see how Kellyn, McCarthy, Hollingshead, and Carlos are feeling, as a match with lowly-but-finding form SKC looms in just 4 days, but for now, it's three tough points on the road! Episode 250 is also looming, but, for now, enjoy the win, and the new episode!

It's Episode 244, and it's the first half of the rematch everyone has been waiting for: Leg 1 of the Semifinals of the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League tilt between LAFC and the Philadelphia Union. Thanks to a pair of superb saves by John McCarthy, LAFC and Philly left the first half level. A Kellyn Acosta handball gifted a PK to the Union with just 4 minutes left in regulation, and Daniel Gazdag hammered it home to give the hosts a late lead. However, Kellyn would go from goat to hero, getting on the end of a Timothy Tillman cross even as the ball dipped behind him. Despite a touch from Andre Blake, the visitors leveled the match and broke the hearts of the Philly fans. LAFC heads home to BMO with all kinds of options available to them as they look to advance to the CCL Finals for the second time. Also on this episode, Filly offends the good people of Pigs Knuckle, Arkansas, rendering Scarf utterly speechless. Enjoy Episode 244!

LAFC has knocked Carson out of the playoffs (again) behind a spectacular performance by #99 (again), and you can hear all about it here on Episode 221! Though we still have two more wins to go, tonight we celebrate LAFC's 3-2 triumph over the Galaxy!Somehow, after 17 matches in the Clasico Angelino, this rivalry still gives us magic every. single. time! LAFC went up early, something we thought we must do in order to win, behind a beautiful ball from Carlos Vela and an even better box out by Denis Bouanga to create enough space to finish. Right before the half, Samuel Grandsir draws the visitors back level with a strike from relative distance off a bad clearance. Both sides escape to the locker rooms level at 1. And the fireworks had just begun!With Captain Carlos coming off after about 75 minutes for Mahala, nervous time had clearly started. But this season's Ghanian game changer made a beautiful run into the box as Ryan Hollingshead's cross came through. Upon getting a small touch on it, the ball found Denis on the back post, and just like that, it's a brace for Bouanga! All LAFC had to do was hold on. Oops.Super sub Dejan Joveljic's rocket in the 84' drew us back level, but the man who has been our most consistent scorer for the last two seasons, Chicho Arango, would pull a rabbit out of a hat in stoppage! After a perfect Kellyn corner, the ball pinballed to Chicho's feet, and he simply doesn't miss from there! After a couple of near misses by Jeremy Ebobisse and Chicho Arango, we head to half down, but not out, 1-0. Surprisingly, no halftime changes were made, but that wouldn't stop LAFC from leveling the match. After some much-needed heroics by Crepeau, it was time for more Mahala magic! A cheeky chip of Marcinkowski in the 54' was all LAFC needed to grab a point back on the road. Or at least we thought.After subbing in Carlos Vela, Jose Cifuentes, Ilie Sanchez, and Gareth Bale, the momentum immediately swung our way, but double yellows on Ilie and Kellyn, coupled with the wunderkind, Cade Cowell, entering the match, spelled trouble for the Black and Gold. In the 77', Cade Cowell fired a one-timer with authority to put the home side on top for good and send PayPal Park into a frenzy. San Jose had just won their MLS Cup. Ilie Sanchez all but sealed the victory for SJ, picking up his second yellow in just 15 minutes, assuring he will miss the match in Austin, but a game LAFC squad wouldn't relent. The front line of Bale, Chicho, and Vela were clicking as LAFC had a few chances to pull one back, but it was too little, too late, and just like that, the win streak was over. This episode definitely meanders through the first few bits! Will Cifu, Mamadou Fall, and/or Brian Rodriguez be on their way out? Are more players coming in? Why is Filly calling out Tony Robbins (again)? Did we really just talk about the return of Shaft Brewer, Jr. to American soccer? And did the boys really get to bring back “Name That Perez”?! What an episode!

We ended up doing our Saturday-scheduled mondo Swimrun practice on Friday afternoon so Chris could prepare for his son's 3rd birthday party. We have one more biggish week of training and then we're two weeks away from ÖTILLÖ.ShoutoutsWe've got a mondo shouting out to give this week to the awesome crew at Traverse Fitness in Denver Colorado: Rob, Sara, Kellyn, Jane, Kate, Timmy, Sarah and Ben, Josh, Chris, Avery and Vivian. Rob Dm'd us a few months back and told us that he was bringing a big crew of people to Ödyssey Swimrun Orcas Island to do their first Swimrun. All in all, 22 athletes are making their way to Orcas Island. Awesome…we know! Anyway, we offered to do a Zoom call with them to answer any questions that they might have and we had that call this past weekend. We had a ton of fun chatting with them and we are so stoked for their adventure.
