Just a few hours after the conclusion of the elite races, Des and Kara jumped on the mics to recap all of the action at the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday. To call this episode "pure fire" would be a gross understatement AND STILL perhaps the best possible teaser words for it.  They spend the most time on the women's race, one that Kara calls "the best race of the year," breaking down the cat-and-mouse games that extended well into the race. This includes their perspectives on the strategies of Kellyn Taylor and Molly Huddle to take the lead at various points, knowing full well that Obiri and Gidey were going to stay patient until a final, blazing-fast push to the finish. As a bonus, you get some early predictions for the women's marathon in Paris.  Then, they cover the men's race too, but not before hearing about Des's death-defying trip to the marathon start line in Staten Island, where she and counterpart-on-the-lead-motos Galen Rupp, were the very last to cross the bridge before it closed. Des was in rare form on this episode - fresh off the marathon broadcast, still jet-lagged from Japan, hopped-up on champagne, beer, and coffee, and oh so ready to stoke any available fire. Kara just can't seem to contain her... or walk away. You have to stay all the way to the end for the biggest conflagration (and genuinely not a bad sponsorship idea for the US Marathon Trials). Enjoy!

“I think you can almost want something too bad. Because I just wanted it so bad. I wasn’t relaxed. It wasn’t fun anymore. It was just tunnel vision on winning — and I wasn’t winning! I wanted it so bad and it wasn’t happening. It was very draining.” What happens when you set big, dreamy, lofty goals — but when it counts the most, you fall short? That’s what this series, “Just Missed,” is about. These conversations are about dealing with disappointment. They are reminders that progress is never linear, and that it’s not always the big wins or the losses that define us, but the moments in between. So far on this series, we’ve heard from Julia Lucas and HOKA NAZ Elite athlete Kellyn Taylor. Today, Oregon Track Club’s Chanelle Price is here. Chanelle was a standout athlete in high school. She was named Gatorade’s Athlete of the Year, and became addicted to winning. But when she went away to college at the University of Tennessee, she was no longer “high school Chanelle.” She wasn’t winning. She wasn’t the fastest on the team. And she struggled. She had a goal of becoming an NCAA 800m champion, but missed that goal, finishing second at both indoors and outdoors. From there, Chanelle’s running career saw high highs and challenging lows. She decided to compete at the professional level, but struggled to find a sponsor early on. In 2014, Chanelle had a breakthrough: She won gold in the 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and became the only American woman to ever win a gold medal there. She signed with Nike. She won gold — three times — as a member of Team USA’s 4x800m relay at World Athletics Championships. She ran a personal best in the 800m: 1:59.10. Then, in 2017, it all came crashing down. The hits came in rapid succession: a foot fracture, a pulmonary embolism that led to blood clots in her lungs, and, ultimately, a bout with mononucleosis. All of that led to her losing her sponsor. It all could’ve been career-ending, but Chanelle wouldn’t let that happen. She mounted a comeback — and last year, dealt with another foot fracture. Today, Chanelle is up and running (up, literally, at altitude), gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. This is her story. “I think that in order to do special things, especially in running, you really have to put yourself out there. And a lot of times, it doesn’t go how you want it to. But you can learn a lot from the times that don’t go right. When things go right, you’re like yeah, that was fun, that was easy… But the ones where you really have to work for it, you really have to put your head down and grind it out, go to a dark place, get it done — you grow so much more in those situations, and you take so much more away from those times.” What happens when you set big, dreamy, lofty goals — but when it counts the most, you fall short? That’s what this series, “Just Missed,” is about. These conversations are about dealing with disappointment. They are reminders that progress is never linear, and that it’s not always the big wins or the losses that define us, but the moments in between. Last week, we heard from former professional runner Julia Lucas. This week, HOKA NAZ Elite athlete Kellyn Taylor is here. Throughout her professional career, Kellyn has seen some major breakthroughs and has celebrated plenty of exciting moments. There was her win at the 2018 Grandma’s Marathon, where she ran a 2:24 just eight weeks after dropping out of the Boston Marathon. In 2019, she ran a personal best in the 5K, finished third at USATF Outdoor Championships, and placed seventh at the New York City Marathon. But along the way, she’s dealt with some tough stuff, too. There was that DNF in Boston. Injuries. And a handful of near-misses in pursuit of becoming an Olympian — most notably, in 2016, when she finished sixth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and then finished fourth in the 10K at the Track & Field Trials a few months later. Then, last year, she hoped to make the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team — again — but finished eighth. Now, Kellyn, who is also a mom, a foster parent, and a trained firefighter, is gearing up for this summer’s Track & Field Trials, where she again hopes to make the 10K team. One way was to fulfill orders for her crocheted Allie Resiliency Beanies that took off following her victory at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in late February 2020. The other way, she and her long-time boyfriend Tim Gannon decided, was to start a family. So this month, the 31-year-old Tuliamuk will give birth in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Then when she is physically ready, Tuliamuk will resume training with Northern Arizona Elite in Flagstaff to prepare for the Olympic marathon Aug. 7 in Sapporo, site of the 1972 Winter Olympics selected for distance events due to excessive summer heat in Tokyo. For Tuliamuk and Gannon, engaged to be married, the birth of their daughter already named Zoe will be a joyous start to 2021 that her coach believes will carry over through the hard work necessary to prepare for the Olympics.  "Aliphine is as happy as she's ever been, and I just think there's something to be said for that," NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario said. "Any couple who's really wanted to have a baby then have one, sure there's stress that comes with that and sleepless nights. But overall there's joy. And Aliphine has always competed best when she's happy. Tuliamuk naturally was ecstatic after conquering the demanding trials course in Atlanta to win in 2:27.33 and become the first Olympic qualifier for NAZ Elite, going into its eighth year of operation. Her finish-line celebration with teammates Stephanie Bruce (sixth) and Kellyn Taylor (eighth) is one of the indelible 2020 Olympic sport memories before the Tokyo Games were postponed less than a month later. In early December, Tuliamuk made her pregnancy public via social media. "Tim and I always knew that we wanted to have a family," she said. "The goal was post 2020 Olympics. As it turned out this year had other plans. By mid-April we were convinced there will be no more races this season. The darkness ahead was too much, we created our own light at the end of the tunnel. "If anyone told me this would be the case 10 months ago, I would have called them crazy, but this is 2020. We planned this knowing that we would have six-plus months to get ready for Tokyo Olympics."   What's New in the 303:   BRAC a Year in Review and What’s Ahead with President Andy Johnson 303Endurance caught up with Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC) President, Andy Johnson to take a look back at 2020 and all the challenges and how they will help BRAC moving forward in 2021 and beyond to benefit not only bike racing community, but the cycling community in general.    303: You have mentioned a new name for BRAC, are you ready to reveal that at this time and if so what is it?   Andy: Years ago when BRAC was under different leadership, the organization was keen on creating a URL that speaks to the larger vision of BRAC’s role in the Colorado cycling community.  So, if approved at Club Council in February, the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (which is a mouthful) and BRAC (which is always awkward to say and explain) will be known as ColoradoCycling.Org.  The name change affords us the ability to talk about cycling and cycling events in the broader context of our Colorado community.   Castle Rock Fat Bike Snow Adventure and Cultural Hub Extraordinaire? When I say Castle Rock, Colorado…what comes to mind? Awesome backcountry adventure? A gritty and popular brew pub vibe from “the other side of the tracks”. Elevating American Distance Running: Ben Rosario  Ben Rosario is the head coach of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite. His athletes have been wildly successful in recent years, with the most notable being Aliphine Tuliamuk's win at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. His athletes Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor also finished in the top ten of that race, and on the men's side, Scott Fauble, a 2:09 marathoner, came in 12th.   In this episode, Coach Claire talks to Ben about the Olympic Marathon Trials, focusing on how well his female athletes did, how HOKA NAZ treats female athletes, especially in light of the Nike Oregon Project, and why he thinks so many female runners are still posting PRs well into their 30s.  Ben also shares some great coaching advice, his training philosophy, and his insight into why so many world records have been posted during COVID.    At the time of this recording, Ben was preparing for The Marathon Project held on December 20. Coach Claire asks Ben for his predictions and will post the results here in the show notes following the race. Like many coaches, Ben started out as an accomplished runner himself as a member of the Hansons Brooks team and he competed in the Olympic Trials twice before turning to coaching full time.  In his six+ years with Northern Arizona Elite, Ben’s athletes have won U.S. National Titles in cross country and on the roads at 10k, the half marathon and the 25k, as well as New Zealand National Titles on the track and the roads.  HOKA NAZ Elite athletes have recorded 8 top-10 finishes at World Marathon Majors. The team has been represented at the World Cross Country Championships, the World Half Marathon Championships, and at the World Track and Field Championships.  His athletes have also competed at the European Athletics Championships, the Great Edinburgh International XC Meet, the NACAC Cross Country Championships, the NACAC Track Championships, the Pan American Cup Cross Country Meet and the Pan American Games.  In 2016, the team produced two sixth-place finishes at the Olympic Trials Marathon and two fourth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, four HOKA NAZ Elite athletes posted top 20 finishes, including three in the top eight in the women’s race led by Aliphine Tuliamuk–the Trials Champion.    Questions Ben is asked: 4:19 2020 has been pretty crazy for everyone in the world but specifically for the team that you lead, Northern Arizona Elite. Let's go back in time to February when you were getting ready for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Can you take us back there and recap what you were thinking?   5:10 Atlanta is a pretty tough course with all the hills. Obviously that was not a problem for at least your female athletes.   5:28 Your athlete, Aliphine Tuliamuk, won the women's race and was planning to head to Tokyo when the world shut down. What was that like as her coach?   6:41 I would love to talk to you about Aliphine Tuliamuk’s recent announcement that she is pregnant and due in January. As her coach, I’m sure she came to you and said, “Hey, Ben, this is what I’m going to do.” What was that conversation like?    7:26 How tough was it keeping Aliphine’s pregnancy a secret?   8:33 You are quite experienced in elite mom runners. Several women on your team are moms and are still just killing it. I would love to talk about Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce. I would love to talk about Stephanie for a minute. She is almost 37 years old and still getting PRs in the 10K. How is that possible?   10:14 It didn’t used to be so long ago that mid-30s was old for a runner but now that’s not the case, and I think maybe it has something to do with belief, too, seeing all these new great examples.   11:06 I want to keep going back to the women because you have been coaching some really great ones obviously, and American women are seeing a resurgence in endurance running. American men maybe not so much. Would you want to talk about that?   12:32 I want to talk to you about how women are treated in this sport. We’ve all heard about the crazy things with the Nike Oregon Project and how Kara Goucher was treated when she was pregnant. I don’t think that it’s going to be the same story with Hoka. I would love to have you share what you could say about how Hoka supports its female athletes.   15:06 I think you’re right that when all that came out about the Oregon Project that we thought as fans, “Oh. This is the way they’re all treated.” But it’s great to hear that that’s not the case.   15:34 Whenever I get a coach on, I love to talk about coaching advice to hopefully help someone who’s listening become a better runner. Do you have different training approaches for the kids who come straight out of college than you do for your veteran elite runners?   17:03 Let’s talk in a little bit more detail about the training advice. Most runners get the advice hard days are hard; easy days are easy. But then you throw in some medium days. I think that’s where a lot of recreational runners trip up is those medium days. Can you talk about those and what they’re for and how you use them?   19:22 You don’t always have to run your hardest, right?   20:11 You're also a fan of high mileage and I want to know what that means to you because as runners we all want to run as much as possible but clearly there’s a point when high is too high. So what is that point? Obviously it’s individual, but how does somebody know what is high for them? Where’s that sweet spot?   22:51 Besides your athletes, this year we've seen so many world-record breaking performances in 2020, which seems counterintuitive since there have been so few races, the world is not normal, and people can’t train the way they usually do. What do you attribute that to?     24:14 I’m sure the cynics would say the number of world-record breaking performances in 2020 are because of the shoes or because there’s not enough drug tests in COVID. What do you say about those kinds of things?   25:25 So you think there should be regulations on running shoes like them being available to the public or there’s a stack height, that kind of stuff; is that what you mean?   27:00 What's next for you and your athletes?  How do you predict the running world will change in 2020?     28:29 This will probably air after the Marathon Project this weekend, but I would love to have you handicap it a little bit, tell us who’s all racing and what do you predict?   31:40 How many participants are there for the marathon? Questions I Ask Everyone:   32:17 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   33:31 What is the greatest gift running has given you?    33:56 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Ben: “I think what we’re learning is that women can run really well into their mid-to-late 30s, and we’re learning that not only from Steph but Shalane, Des, Kellyn, Molly Huddle; all kinds of women in the US and beyond are showing that in distance running, women keep getting better.”   “In general, my goal anyway is to keep people around here for a really long time. So we’re definitely taking a long-term approach and we’re not trying to necessarily throw everything at them right away. We’re trying to slowly add pieces over time, and you see that with the folks who have stayed with us for a long time just getting better and better and better and better, and that’s what we want.”    “I think uninterrupted training leads to great performances for anybody at any level.”   “The sport has a side to it now that is very technological. And so does golf. And so does swimming. And so does baseball, right? And every sport almost. And like all those other sports, we need to make sure that the playing field is fair.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run     Want more awesome interviews and advice? Over the course of the summer, as team sports figured out a way to safely get back playing games, NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario realized that the distance running community needed to become proactive. With mass participation races being cancelled across the world, Rosario's athletes needed a goal, particularly runners like Scott Fauble and Kellyn Taylor, who missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team, but wanted another shot at a marathon before the end of 2020. Another one of Rosario's athletes, Canadian Rory Linkletter, was also in an interesting situation — he needed an opportunity to run a high-quality, sanctioned marathon in the hope that he would qualify for his national Olympic team next summer. Rosario saw an opportunity to set up a special, elite-only race. It would give his athletes and others something to strive for at the end of one very bad year, and perhaps provide an opportunity for a few international elites to qualify for the Olympics. In a text to friend and agent Josh Cox, The Marathon Project concept was born. The XC's Michael Doyle talks with Rosario about how the race came together, how big a deal the event has become to both North American elite distance runners and the community as a whole, the importance of making a marathon entertaining, and why he thinks something special is going to happen on Sunday. In his mid-forties, Matt convinced Ben Rosario, head coach of Northern Arizona Elite, to let him train with a roster of national champions and Olympic hopefuls in the running mecca of Flagstaff, Arizona. These runners included Scott Fauble, Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie and Ben Bruce, Matt Llano, Tim Ritchie, and several others. Matt's mission: Run the race of his life at the Chicago Marathon by preparing exactly like a professional runner. Matt’s gripping account of his “fake pro runner” experience allows us to partake in his dream of fulfilling his potential. Matt also details this process through the eyes of the pro's who live that life year round, year after year. At the Trials, she and teammates Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor finished 1st, 6th, and 8th respectively to show the power of women working and training together. In this interview, Kara and Shanna chat with Aliphine and get to hear her story from her beginnings in Kenya all the way through the finishing tape in Atlanta as an American Champion. Aliphine discusses adapting to life in the US, her collegiate career, transitioning to pro running without a contract for the first several years, almost quitting a few times, and surviving several major injuries before finally finding her home at NAZ Elite. Yes, she is a fast runner, but she is so much more than that as a bright light in our sport. You will see what we mean when you listen to Aliphine talk about her desire to be a nurse or when she discusses clean sport and the young girls she wants to inspire at the finish line of the NYC Mini 10K. We couldn't be more proud to have Aliphine representing the US in the Tokyo Olympics this summer!

Warning: if you listen to this episode, you might be inspired to run all-out hill repeats with an uncontrollable smile on your face. Sara's love and passion for running is THAT contagious! Sara is a 2:22 marathoner (#6 all-time), but like many of our interviewees in this series, her marathon time only tells a small part of the story. She is a multi-dimensional athlete and person, and Shanna and Kara explore it all in this discussion. Sara talks about her running career including how it began exploring the woods as a kid alone in her home state of California. She discusses her time at Stanford and what she learned from the great coach Dena Evans. She gives details on how her relationship with Ryan Hall began and how it has evolved through his elite running career to the present day with him as her coach. She shares what led them to adopt 4 orphan girls from Ethiopia and what it's been like integrating them into their life here in the US. And of course, we get her perspective on shoes and clean sport and how she wishes we could all experience the purity of the sport she fell in love with in the woods as a kid. Sara is one of the nicest people we know, but don't let that fool you. She is also a fierce competitor and will no doubt be making waves on the course in Atlanta. We can't wait to cheer her on as she tries to make her Olympic dream come true. Go Sara!  This episode concludes our series interviewing 9 of the top contenders for the Olympic Marathon Trials this weekend. It all started with Desiree Linden in episode #27 and continued with episodes #30-37 including Molly Huddle, Shadrack Biwott, Emily Sisson, Scott Fauble, Stephanie Bruce, Jared Ward, Kellyn Taylor, and this final one with Sara Hall. Kellyn Taylor is a 2:24 marathoner and ranked #7 on the US all-time list, but her story is so much more interesting than a time on the clock. She's also training to be a firefighter, has a passion for fostering children, and is working to instill her trademark mental toughness in her own daughter. In this interview led by Kara and Shanna, we cover it all. Kellyn tells us about her Wisconsin roots where she grew up doing gymnastics and playing soccer before running became her primary sport. She talks about her transition into pro running with MacMillan Elite before she made the shift to work with Ben Rosario at NAZ Elite. She gives us the details behind her running highs and lows including two narrow misses for making the Olympic team in 2016 in both the marathon and 10K, her DNF at Boston in 2018 in nor'easter conditions, and her big PR in 2:24 at the Grandma's Marathon just 8 short weeks after the Boston disappointment. In addition, she shares personal stories about returning from pregnancy to run again and the roller-coaster ride it can be as a foster parent. Finally, we discuss the clean sport culture within NAZ Elite and Kellyn's perspective on the great shoe debate, including why she believes that all carbon fiber plates should be banned. Like her teammates from this interview series Steph Bruce and Scott Fauble, Kellyn is an open book who isn't afraid to tell it like it is, and we appreciate her so much for that. We are excited to cheer her on from the sidelines in Atlanta next weekend! As mentioned in the closing to the interview, you can meet the Clean Sport Collective podcast co-hosts in Atlanta on Saturday (Feb 29). We are SUPER EXCITED to have our first guest on the show- Lindsey Hein! You have definitely heard of her podcast, “I’ll Have Another With Lindsey Hein”; we loved her recent interview with Courtney Dawalter.  Lindsey says she likes conversations- and she is not kidding! As soon as we started chatting our conversation went ALL OVER the place, from the joy of 4 boys to skincare and back around to the original reason we wanted to talk to her in the first place- body shaming. Big thanks to Karen Schleuter for drawing our attention to that post, you made this all happen! We hope you enjoy this casual, fun, sprawling conversation with Lindsey Hein and hope you can join us in NYC next month for her live podcast session at New York Road Runner Headquarters the Friday before the marathon.   SHOW NOTES It was a PLEASURE and a privilege to speak with Lindsey Hein on the Running Life podcast this week! Lindsey is the host of the “I’ll Have Another” podcast AND, more recently, of the Illuminate podcast. She has interviewed, oh, a few people you may have heard of before (most recently Courtney Dauwalter, winner of the 2019 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France). Lindsey is a longtime runner, a mom of four boys under age 7, and a running coach. She and Coach MK and Coach Sarah had a LOT to talk about, and it began with a story that Lindsey told her audience on social media this past summer. After a tough workout at the track on a hot day (2x800, 1600, 2x800), she said good morning to an older man walking the outer lane, and he responded by telling her that she was getting a belly and recommending that she try doing some crunches. Lindsey, just over a year out from having her fourth baby and feeling QUITE GOOD THANK YOU VERY MUCH about her body, says “I laughed a big hearty laugh and said I have 4 kids, the youngest of which isn’t even one and I told him I am proud of my belly.⁣”    Lindsey’s response was to hand him her phone and ask him to take her photo, and she went home, got her 4 kids breakfasted and bandaided and ready to go to the pool, and then she posted that photo on Facebook.   Many people were horrified at the story that went along with it. The idea that someone had commented on her body like that, recommended she lose 20-25 pounds...it was infuriating. And, frankly, destabilizing. Someone as fit as Lindsey Hein is getting heckled at the track? What hope is there for the rest of us?   This was the moment that connected us with Lindsey for the first time (and thank you Karen Schlueter for making that happen!) and this is where the conversation really begins.   Coach MK and Coach Sarah have talked about body image through a number of different cultural artifacts over the past several months: Beyonce’s 22 Days video, the return of The Biggest Loser, the cultural response to Brittany Runs A Marathon. We were really inspired by Lindsey’s perspective on this moment and what she found in herself when confronted with the judgment of a total stranger, and we LOVED talking with her about her relationship to running and her body, as well as her podcast, her audience, and her image.   We also talked skin care and self care and apologizing less and running out of fucks to give - aging is amazing, y’all. And, finally, we all squeal with excitement about Lindsey and MK both getting ready to run the NYC marathon together - it will be Lindsey’s first New York, and both MK and Sarah take a second to wax poetic about their favorite parts of the course.   And speaking of marathons, don’t miss the moment early on when Lindsey mentions (offhandedly) that she did no speedwork when she was training for Boston this year.    If you are going to be in New York City for marathon weekend, do NOT miss Lindsey’s live episode of I’ll Have Another with Roberta Groner, Sara Hall and Kellyn Taylor!!   (totally non-affiliate) Skincare Links from Coach MK: I purchased this face wash, used it twice and it did make my skin glow, but it also broke me out. I've always had acne-prone skin so I wrote it off as not being able to have nice things. I mean, I run every day and wear sunscreen; more is not worth the effort if I'm just gonna head outside again, right? Recovering from surgery with no tv, I searched for JVN on Youtube, and got this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJAZkC9d43c Then this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zBkWRjc4RY THEN THIS VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys1r-14fP1Q and I was like OH MY GOD a double cleanse whaaaaat? and I went to my bathroom and started reading labels then was like, "I NEED A WATER-BASED CLEANSER!" and ended up on www.klog.com and bought this cleanser and this toner and this toner (because I couldn't decide, figured I'd try and return the other one) and they were like WOW so I kept both....within a week I had zero acne. The oil-based face wash is magic if you use it the way it was intended- by following it with a water-based cleanser. How I went from a double cleanse to a whole morning AND NIGHTTIME routine that consists of completely different products will be the subject of a future podcast!!!!!

JUCO star Kenny Bednarek pulled a sub 20/sub 45 double that is almost unheard of but Michael Norman may have had the best 200 of the weekend. What about 100/200/400 high schooler Matt Boling? We have sprint talk the first 20 minutes of the podcast. Then a little discussion of another World Marathon Major (21:48), before we turn to discussing whether Paul Chelimo is in trouble or just starting the season more slowly because Worlds are later in the year (26:45). In this Mother's Day episode, I start with shout-outs to mom runners out there including Kara Goucher, Alysia Montano, Sara Hall, Steph Bruce, and Kellyn Taylor who are making an impact on our sport in tangible and FAST ways. See below for the NY Times article featuring Kara and Alysia and the sacrifices they were forced to make when having kids: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/12/opinion/nike-maternity-leave.html Then, I turn to a discussion with Rogue Coach Brent Stein on his core training principles with examples from his athletes. While you have heard some of these principles many times on this show, it never hurts to hear them again. Plus, Brent brings tangible examples that I think many of you will relate to in order to apply them in your own running.

"I've never been a person to think that just because someone has a better PR than me that they're going to beat me. I think that it's important to have belief in yourself and your capabilities. You have to believe that you're going to do something great before it actually happens." Thrilled to have Kellyn Taylor join me on the podcast this week. The 31-year-old mom, who trains in Flagstaff, Ariz., as a member of coach Ben Rosario's HOKA Northern Arizona Elite squad, ran a 2:24 at Grandma's Marathon on June 16. It was a four-minute personal best, two-minute course record, and the seventh-fastest marathon ever run by an American woman. Taylor's breakthrough came just 61 days after being forced to drop out of April's Boston Marathon with hypothermia, an experience she described as a disappointment and a blown opportunity. The Wichita State alum, who finished sixth in the marathon and fourth in the 10,000m at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, was eighth at last fall's New York City Marathon (2:29:56). She's run personal bests in both the mile—4:33.4 indoors at Boston University in January—and marathon this year, and describes herself as a “jack of all trades.” Competitive running isn't Taylor's only pursuit, however; last fall, she successfully completed her coursework and training to be a firefighter, a topic we got into over the course of our conversation. “It's something that I can just see myself just doing and being happy with for the duration of my working life,” she explained to me. “For me, one of my biggest goals in life is to never have a job that I don't love. I'm 31 years old, almost 32, and so far, so good. If I can have that carry on for the next 30-35 years, I think that would be a special thing.” We covered quite a bit of ground in this episode, including: — Her breakthrough performance at Grandma's Marathon. — What her husband said to her after she broke the tape. — How much time she takes off after a marathon. — Where she now sees herself on the map of U.S. women's marathoning. — How she was feeling heading into the Boston Marathon (where she eventually dropped out due to hypothermia). — Her thoughts on why many of the elite women struggled so much at Boston this year. — When (and why) she decided to run Grandma's Marathon. — What her training looked like in the two months between Boston and Grandma's. — Where her self-confidence comes from and how she uses it to her advantage. — Reflections on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon, where she finished sixth, and what she would do differently if she were in that situation again. — How she's a different runner now versus when she joined NAZ Elite 4-1/2 years ago. — The importance of a longterm coach-athlete relationship and training in a group environment. — The appeal of firefighting and how she's been able to juggle that with her training as an elite-level athlete. “I think that I can do it all, don't get me wrong,” she told me. — Her aversion to foam rolling and strength-training. “I have like five foam rollers,” she admitted to me. “I don't use them. I don't know why I keep buying them, but I have them.” — The lessons she wants her daughter to take away from her athletic pursuits. — A whole lot more. I really enjoyed this conversation with Kellyn and letting her share some of the secrets behind her recent success. If you're looking for some insight on setting yourself up for a breakthrough or learning how to bounce back from a bad race, this episode is for you. “When I'm dealing with pressure from racing and stuff, I just tell myself, 'This is an opportunity of a lifetime.' When I was growing up, or I started running, I never thought that I would be the person that I am today. I never thought that I would be living in America, that I would be an independent woman doing my own thing. I have an opportunity that not a lot of people have—like not even my role models when I was in Kenya, they don't have the opportunities that I have here. And so when I have that pressure, I just tell myself that I am in a better place and I don't want to complain because this is not going to last forever and so I try to just enjoy the process.” All she does is win, win, win, no matter what. Super excited to welcome nine-time U.S. national champion Aliphine Tuliamuk to the podcast. Tuliamuk went wire-to-wire to win the U.S. half-marathon championship in Pittsburgh on May 6 and followed that up less than a week later with her third-straight U.S. 25K title in Grand Rapids on May 12. The 29-year-old Tuliamuk, a native of Kenya who became a U.S. citizen in 2016, lives in Flagstaff, Arizona and trains with coach Ben Rosario's HOKA Northern Arizona Elite squad. She's a graduate of Wichita State University, where she was 14-time All-American and earned a degree in public health. “Without running, I would never have these opportunities,” Tuliamuk told me. “I have met some really, really incredible people in my life. And things have changed for me through running. It's just amazing and running has changed so much for me. I think I get that drive from there. The things I'm able to do for my family—to be able to help my siblings pay their tuition—and if I wasn't running, if I wasn't here in America, I wouldn't be able to do that. So I get that drive just because I am in a position where I can do things, and if I stop being self-motivated, then I'm not going to be able to do anything. And I feel like I still have so much in me. And people see me and they're like, “Wow, you're so accomplished.” But when I think about it, I just feel like I haven't done much. I feel like I haven't hit the jackpot that I need to. And so I still have to have self-drive in order to get to that point.” In this episode, we dive into Tuliamuk's story and what it was like to grow up in a small village in Kenya with 31 siblings. We also discuss her origins in running, her earliest recollections of racing and competition, and what led her to attend college in the U.S. Finally, we talk about what it was like assimilating to life in a new country, the differences she sees between Kenyan runners and American runners, why she's excited to train alongside Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor in the lead-up to the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon, how she deals with pressure in competitive situations, the importance of national championship races to her as a new U.S. citizen, where she hopes to invest her time and energy when her running career is over, and much, much more. We even get Neely to predict the winners of both races. Neely uses the Final Surge platform in her coaching, if you are interested in getting coached by Neely head over to NeelyRuns.com.   You were the top American Women at Boston in 2016, you want to explain why you are not running this year? Pregnant  Due August 4th Boy How will the weather affect the race? It can change the morning of the race, so be prepared for it to change last minute If it is a little rainy like they are predicting, are those good conditions for a good fast race? Personally, I would like it The wind will be a bigger factor What should first-time runners know about the course? Look up Boston Marathon Preview video  Need to track pace and be ok with being off at times, take the average not the moment pace Easy to get caught up and go to fast in the first few miles Use first 3 miles as a warmup run Men's Elite Marathon Is there someone you think can knock off the defending champ Geoffrey Kirui? Anything can happen on marathon day Can never predict, but a good chance he won't win Last year Galen Rupp was runner-up and came back and won Chicago, what do you think the chance is of him winning and running a fast time? Galen is a racer, he will let others do the work early and take over late Kirui may push the pace early or he may be the one who waits for Rupp to make a move Don't count out Lelisa Desisa or 2016 winner Lemi Berhanu Who will win the men's race?  Lesisa Desisa On the women's side, this is a really deep field. How will this play out? This race is going to be exciting I think Molly Huddle will perform big Desi and Shalane have more experience One of the wild cards is Jordan Hasay, how do you see her playing a factor? She is back and knows what to expect She is used to the big spotlight She has had 2 really good marathons She is young and has been doing impressive things She is a wildcard We have some veterans with experience in Deena Kastor and Kellyn Taylor, can one of these vets step up and surprise people? Deena is back and you can never count her out Kellyn has been chipping away at her goals and making performance gains each year. She has stayed healthy the last year and coming off a good fall season Flanagan is coming off of NYC, can she repeat that at Boston? You always need to get a little lucky on race day She will be ready to race Edna Kiplagat is the defending champ, is she going to be hard to knock off? She knows what she needs to do to win and will make them work Who is someone we need to keep an eye on in the women's race? Serena Burla She races a lot overseas Running fast in the last year Her first big race since cancer surgery  Who will win the women's race? Welcome to episode 77 of the Final Surge Podcast where we welcome professional runner Kellyn Taylor and her coach Ben Rosario. Kellyn is coming off her top 10 finish at the New York City Marathon last November is one of the many amazing Americans in the Boston Marathon in April. We talk to Kellyn and her coach about the training to date and what to expect in Boston.  They share with us what the workouts look like, what Boston specific work they are doing and get into details about the hills and why they chose Boston for the spring marathon. Make sure you check out Ben's 10-weeks to Boston Blog and follow Kellyn online.   How did you get started in running? Ran in middle school High School moved to running all year and became state champion Went to a Jr College then Witchita State You ran a great race at NYC, at what point did you decide Boston was going to be your next race? After NYC decided was not going to do a spring marathon Changed mind shortly after How is your training going, where are you with it? December until a few weeks ago did base phase Now in the second week of specific marathon training Ben, you have been blogging about the training, can you tell us what the weeks are looking like right now? In the second week, bumping mileage up to peak mileage which will be 6-5-4 and three weeks out Long steady marathon efforts are the bread and butter Arnold on Twitter asked about the mental aspect of running when you decide you did not want to do a marathon right after NYC was it more for mental reasons or physical? Mental is part of it Ben, when you are coaching elite runners like this, how much do you talk about the mental aspect of racing? Try to focus one week at a time Want it to be that you are so fit when it comes time to race you are just confident They have been through it so many times they know what to expect Boston weather so unpredictable cannot plan and just get fit One thing Ben has been talking about on the blog is how different Boston is. What has been different about the Boston preparation? Hammering downhills Yesterday 22 miles and probably 19 of them were downhill Milage is higher than it has ever been Paces have been faster Listeners love to hear about mileage, what is your mileage at right now? 118 right now, will be 130 at peak This 118 is about what the peak was going into NYC Besides the training, is there anything different in your other preparation to get ready for Boston? Yes, told Ben I would do things right Usually don't eat right, core, prehab, rehab, naps, trying to focus on that stuff more When you were training for NYC you were training with Steph Bruce, she is doing London this time so are you still training with her or are you doing different workouts?  We do some stuff together, but we are doing a lot of different workouts Ben, is this something that was strategic or do you let them decide what marathons they are doing and just guide them? Kellyn handles downhills and miles well so Boston made sense Steph has run Boston once before and did not go great so she does not have great mojo there. She is more of a finding a good pace and locking in so London made more sense You and Scott Smith were up in Boston and run parts of the course, what were your thoughts? Valuable experience Didn't realize how downhill it was Got to do every mile of the course at least once, huge advantage Now know what to train for specifically You and Scott have done three of the same races so far, does it help having Scott Smith there to do the workouts with someone? Helps a lot Nice to have someone to talk to about the workouts What is a hard workout you have done recently? Recently had 3 races back to back and those were hard 30x400 with the wind in the face on hills was tough (Ben) Our long runs have spice which they don't often think of as workouts, the first day of 8-week we did a 22-mile hilly long run that was difficult up and down. First Boston specific run. Ran 6:20 pace for 22 miles at 4500 feet. Do you like running hills or would you rather have a flat course? Not as fast as some women, not a 2:19 marathoner yet Hills help even playing field Built to handle them well I do like them You have done quite a few marathons and have experience, Jonathan from Twitter asked what your diet is like leading into the race? Going into NYC for the last two weeks took dairy out and eats gluten-free Meat, veggie, and rice are staples.  Ben: Going back to the Boston question, seeing it helps the athlete to see it and helps me to sculpt the workouts better. We are doing these hills not to survive Boston but to thrive on the Boston course.  If you are doing 110 miles a week, how much of that is specifically downhill so you can get used to it? 4 easy runs a week Maybe 40-45 miles of the 110 would be downhill Another question we got was about easy runs, what does an easy run look like? 10 miles in the am and 4-6 in the afternoon More of a general feeling than a pace Pace on these runs do not make or break your training What are your goals for Boston? Always have specific goals I make big goals Going to Boston my A goal is to be top-3 and on the podium Ben, can you talk about what is going on with the 10-weeks to Boston blog at this time? Had written plans for public Each week I talk about what Scott and Kellyn are doing and what to expect in the next week All the tips I can think of to get you ready for the Boston Course Kellyn what Hoka's are you using for training and    Resources Kellyn on Twitter Ben on Twitter Final Surge on Twitter NAZ Elite Logs Coach Ben's 10-weeks to Boston

Welcome to episode 77 of the Final Surge podcast where we talk to coach Steve Palladino on Power meters for runners. Back in episode 61 we addressed power with Jim Vance, today we take another look at it and dive deeper into the numbers and success stories. If you want to get even more information make sure you check out Steve's power Facebook group which you can find in the show notes.    Can you tell us about your background and how you got involved in running Ran in middle/high school (4:27 mile) Ran in Jr College then U California David Post-collegiate ran 2:16 at Boston in 1979 and ran for Adidas Then became podiatrist  Started running again late 30's In 40's started competitive cycling and was an early adapter to power meters for bikes A lot of questions still on power for running, why are you such a fan of running with power? Power is an output, closest measure of what is going on metabolically to produce our movement Power will show similar effort on track, on roads or even on a dirt hilly trail Can take a workout easily off the track with power and will get same workout effects  You mentioned perceived exertion. Alex Hutchinson did a piece recently in Outside Magazine that I thought was very fair taking a look at some of the issues he has with power for running. I have been using a Stryd power meter myself recently and have become a fan, but he has some good points. So why do we need a power meter when we have RPE? Power calibrates RPE and RPE modulates power. There are days when your RPE are a little off and power will help you recalibrate RPE on those days.  They fine-tune each other If you look at Galen Rupp or Alan Webb or Kellyn Taylor these are professional runners who are having a lot of success in their sport and not needing power, so what does this really solve, what is missing? Coaches have had success and a lot is on the track so when on track pace works well Power you can take it off the track onto a trail or road and do similar workout Elites just have not identified it yet and it is starting to make some inroads Just like cycling started out as a fringe thing, now all elites use it With triathlons I can see coming off the bike your legs are tired and running with power may be able to inform how you are feeling. But for someone who is just running an open 10k on fresh legs is power that important? Triathletes will benefit from the data, but variable is what type of power can you produce after a bike ride Fresh 10k power can be very beneficial for pacing and to keep you where you need to be for a whole race Elites are racing athletes where age groupers are more racing for a time so different benefits We recently added your power Zones to our Final surge platform, Can you talk about how you use zones? Added more than Stryd has Looked at a lot of races so has been able to adjust and finer tune power zones Upper-end zones have more than other systems based on race ranges and information To get your zones you need FTP or your functional threshold power, how do you get that base number? There are several ways to estimate Critical Power Test - 3 minute and 9-minute test Recent 5k-10k race Comes out to about lactate threshold power  A key number is running that you like to focus on is running effectiveness, and I know this is something we are looking at adding to our system, what is running effectiveness? How effective you are at converting power to speed Important metric  Let’s give an example of how this can change. Let’s say you have a runner who’s running FTP is 350 at 8:00 pace and you train for a few weeks and now you get an FTP of 350 but at 7:45 pace, does that mean the running effectiveness has changed? Yes, getting more speed at same power Slow moving metric, but can get improvement What can I do to improve my running effectiveness? Somethings we know and some are still unknown Leg Spring Stiffness - by weight training/plyos/hills Form issues can be improved, horizontal power issues Improve running economy You mentioned running spring stiffness and vertical oscillation, and there are a lot of numbers that power looks at. So I finish a run and log in to look at my Stryd numbers? What should I be really tracking and looking at? Is it my Run Stress Score, or running effectiveness or leg stiffness or what do I need to focus on? Don't want paralysis by analysis  Look at power and power to weight Running effectiveness Leg Spring Stiffness Horizontal Power Those are the main ones, others are secondary and help break down the above primary numbers If someone is looking at this and wants to try it, most plans they are following on the internet are not power plans. How can they look at a workout and modify it for power? If you know your power zones and reference them can translate Turn distances into durations Easier to take those off track and onto other surfaces You mentioned coaching high school athletes and that you have been using power with your high school kids, can you talk about how that has been going with them? Not every kid, but one from each group of similar ability Training load can be monitored easier to make sure stays where it needs to be   You have trained some athletes to amazing big PR stories using power. Can you tell us about one or two of those as a demonstration of how power really helped? How can things like snow effect power? Power doesn't change but running effectiveness/pace changes Where do you think this goes from here? What needs to happen for it to make a big breakthrough like power for bikes have? Seeing success over and over So many metrics need to focus on simplification Success stories getting shared Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Lore of Running Current trainers you are wearing? - Hoka Stinson Favorite race? - Boston Marathon Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Burrito Your favorite workout - Long Run with spice Pallidino Power Project Facebook Group

Welcome to episode 74 of the Final Surge Podcast where we welcome back Hoka NAZ Elite Coach Ben Rosario who talks about what he has planned for the Boston Marathon. Ben has two elite runners, Kellyn Taylor and Scott Smith who will be competing in Boston. We are just over 10-weeks out from Boston and Ben is offering three new training plans that are specific to the Boston Marathon. These three plans are tailored to the level of runner you are. In addition to the training plans Ben will have a weekly blog post which talks about exactly how to execute the training plans for the upcoming week. Make sure you check out his plans on FinalSurge.com/10weekstoboston and follow along with his professional athletes as they prepare for the unique course that is Boston.  You have two runners joining the great American field at the 2018 Boston Marathon, want to talk about them? Kellyn Taylor off a top 10 finish in New York City Scott Smith coming off a 2:12 PR in Frankfurt With Boston you never know what the weather will be like, could be 40 and raining or 75 and sunny, but if the weather is not a factor Boston can be a fast course so is the intention to run a PR at Boston? Net elevation drop can be fast Course-specific work for the downhill Although it is about racing more than time If you look at the field, especially the women's side, it is an incredibly deep field. Was the goal for Kellyn to always run Boston?  At first, she wasn't sure if she wanted to do a spring marathon Once she decided she wanted to do a marathon, Boston was her choice She is ready to handle the course as well as the level of competition You make your logs available for all your athletes. But for Boston, you are going a step further with 10-weeks To Boston. This is a plan for the last 10-weeks heading into Boston Specifically prepared for being ready for that course Hills to match the up and down of Boston Train like the pros with three plans that are variations of what Kellyn and Scott are doing Super advanced (120 miles a week), Advanced (75-100 miles a week), Intermediate (50-75 miles a week plan) You have other plans available for the marathon too, how do these differ from those plans? We have 5 other marathon plans on Final Surge, but these are based on what our athletes are doing specifically for the Boston course  Can you tell us about the blogging you have planned for these 10 weeks? Will be doing a weekly blog talking about what Scott and Kellyn are doing and how their training is going and second will be talking about the upcoming week, how to execute the workouts on your plan for this week and it will be like you are training with the pros You have 10 weeks before Boston, what do some of the staple workouts look like during that time? Each week they get closer to specific  Start out mile and a half at marathon pace and gets long specific work as gets closer to race 6 weeks out gets harder with tempos and hills Weekends alternate long runs and longer marathon pace work You have a document you include with your plans that talk about your terminology. Can you explain how you use the CV workouts in your plan? This is 30-40 minute race pace Faster than marathon pace, but not going to really hammer you Because running so many miles in marathon training gives you some faster work without jeopardizing training When you get to your long runs are most of them steady or are you working quality into your long runs? Every other week Some carb depleted steady runs Some race pace specific work into your long runs   There is a lot of specific work to Boston so runners who have never run Boston can be prepared. This weekly blog is going to be able to help a lot of athletes. We want to get on again before Boston to talk about this training some more.
