Alpine skiing is one of the core sports on today's Winter Olympic program, but it wasn't even an event at the very first Winter Olympics at Chamonix in 1924. Instead, the only skiing that mattered was cross-country, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. Was there drama? Of course! And it started in qualifications. We've got the full story here, including Mother Nature's revenge, an incorrect podium, and the man who created technology that would forever change the sport of skiing. Alison's got the full details in this episode! For a transcript of this episode and full source list, please visit http://flamealivepod.com. No matter at what age you enter a sport, your attitude is what cements your success. Today's guest and the first woman to join the Saudi Arabia Alpine Skiing Team, Sharifa Al-Sudairi, epitomises courage in competition. The 36-year-old athlete only took up professional ski racing in 2020 and admits that she has a long way to go. But Sharifa has already become a trailblazer among Arab women for her “never give up” mindset, which she has consciously been training since becoming an athlete. From growing up tackling the slopes of Switzerland as a child to enduring crashes as a forerunner, Sharifa has kept picking herself back up to push on in the sport and competed in her first official competition at Ski Dubai last November, which we get into in the show.We also discuss the huge potential in winter sports that is building in the Kingdom, now that Saudi Arabia has won the bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games and the reception that women from the region have been receiving world over for making a mark in a range of sports. Sharifa's perspective and lessons through skiing resonate with us, and we hope they do with you too!Enjoy! "If I set my mind to something, I won't stop until I achieve it. I'm willing to sacrifice and continue to work long past what everyone else is willing to do in order to achieve my goals.”Over an inspiring 18-year career Lindsey Vonn transcended the sport of alpine skiing. 82 World Cup race wins, Olympic gold and World Championship titles in both the Downhill and Super G disciplines made Lindsey one of the greatest racers of all time, but her career wasn't without setbacks, and she is also known for an unrelenting grit that allowed her to bounce back from failure and injury alike. In this episode of Mind Set Win, Lindsey shares with host Cédric Dumont just how crucial grit was in helping her achieve her goals, and Cédric then discusses two powerful equations from Lindsey's favourite book that we can incorporate into our own daily lives. In July 2009, Kevin Mather was on a training ride in the foothills of Los Angeles with a group of friends when he was hit by a truck. His athletic pursuits continued on. Like a story in a book, his athletic career went through various chapters. Early on, he focused on competing in marathons, triathlons, and even Ironman competitions. He would finish first in his category at the L.A. Marathon in 2012 and then finished second that year at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Afterwards, he would pursue alpine skiing and was a member of the U.S. Paralympic ski team. In 2017, he got serious about archery and would win the gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
David Kiley, aka DK, began his love affair with basketball straight out of the womb. Raised in Costa Mesa in SoCal, DK played the sport from morning to evening on the hoop his dad hung from the garage roof or on any outdoor court that he could walk or ride his bike to. Playing and practicing solo and alone was a habit he enjoyed and while dreaming of the time he'd possibly be playing at UCLA or being a pro with the Lakers. However, spinal cord injury rocked his world at this time while he was inner tubing in Southern California mountains at Big Bear. Devastated, DK entered rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, in Downey, CA. What would follow over the years would be playing for the USA in four different decades winning 9 Paralympic Gold Medals, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze in three different sports i.e. Basketball, Track and Alpine Skiing. 8 NWBA National Championships and 6 MVPs (the most won by a player) World Championships and much more that will be left unsaid. David Kiley was also the first wheelchair athlete to appear in Sports Illustrated and to his joy, he was pictured with his two children Justin and Danielle. Married to a loving and supportive wife, Sandy, DK is now a grandfather, a role he embraces like no other and feels "life couldn't get any better."

How did a Junior World Slalom Champion become a 3x Olympian, 3x World Cup Winner and 11x podium finisher in Downhill? It all started with a $10 pair of stretch pants from the ‘90's. At forty years old, through the injuries and the disappointment, Steven still prepares so that he can ski with conviction on the razor's edge, speeds approaching 100 mph and jumps approaching 300 feet, that is Downhill skiing.
Outside of technology, Lars Grønnegaard is an avid cyclist. He stats that if you've been to Copenhagen, where his from, you would know that a lot of people do cycling. He is into road or mountain biking, along with Alpine Skiing - but he does the latter outside of Denmark, in Norway or South Austria. He is a family man, with 3 kids, and he takes his kids cycling with him. Along side of this, he likes to cook for his family. He claims he has a full life, between a startup, family, children and hobbies - and he needs no more.Prior to his current venture, Lars was primarily a product guy. And in running product, he cared deeply about the impact that strategic business moves made on the business. He also saw that claiming revenue was less empirical, creating human error and bias. Fascinated by sports, and growing up near Turin, Italy, within easy reach of mountains, it wouldn't have been an unrealistic goal. But Giampiero, known as Gipi, would follow a related, but different, tact. After completing his Computer Science studies at the University of Turin, he took his career dream as a starting point and supercharged it. Setting up Deltatre with two partners in 1986, he combined his interests in technology and sport to produce better fan experiences across the world – an ambition which began with creating ways to record times and other sports data more accurately. “I was a lover of computers and data and I loved sports, so I thought ‘what better than setting up Deltatre?' Computers and sports were my passions,” he says. When he set up the company aged just 27, Deltatre was unsurprisingly a very different place to today. An early project involved developing software to provide more accurate timekeeping for Formula 1, with the company installing transponders within cars to ensure lap times could be measured accurately – a tactic still used to this day. Personal computers were in their infancy, meaning heavy equipment would often be carted to games. “They did the tasks we were doing at that time like record timings and inform about results,” he says. “Now we've moved in a completely different direction.” Gipi could never have foreseen the incredible growth that Deltatre would encounter. From its humble beginnings as a team of just three, to more than 1,000 technologists, designers, and thought-leaders today in 19 offices across the globe. Now a silent partner powering many of the world's most-watched events, including FIFA World Cups, UEFA Champions Leagues, ATP Tennis Tournaments, and NFL Super Bowls – to name just a few. Disruption has remained constant over the past three decades – and Gipi and employees have evolved with it rather than fervently clung on to techniques of the past. With the recent acquisition of software company Massive Interactive, which specialises in the entertainment OTT space, this has never been more true. “When I look back every year, the company is never the same as the year before; it's a constant transformation,” he says. As well as the continued growth of the company, he believes one of his biggest achievements is the culture fostered at Deltatre. “It's a very informal environment and my door is always open,” he says. And how does he want others in the company to view him? “Honest and loyal,” he says, “which I believe are also important sport values.” Outside of work, he enjoys alpine skiing, swimming, and hiking.
